Motivation Wagon Jumpers - May 11 - 17, 2008 May 14 2008

where am i on the wagon??  i am hanging on by the tag of my shirt and letting the wheel run over my big toes.

my biggest issue is time.  i don't have time to exercise like i'd like to.  i work full-time during the day, my husband works full-time at night, we share a car, and i have a three year old.  we don't live in the suburbs, but more like....out in the boonies and on a main highway.  i got a bike for mother's day with a trailer on the back to pull my little tiny binky baby in....but i've had a few mishaps since sunday.

sunday--the wind was blowing SO hard here that while i was going DOWNHILL i could hardly pedal.  (the hill was steep enough that on a regular day, i wouldn't have had to pedal at all.)  monday--i'm pumping the pedals as hard as i can and i notice that my handlebars are wobbling from side to side...but just a little, so i keep going.  HA.  they almost came all the way off...and they flipped downward and i had to get off and walk.  tuesday--little tiny binky baby said she didn't want to go for a bike ride, but she wanted to go for a walk...so we ventured out onto the highway.  traffic wasn't heavy, but people are just rude.  i mean, here we are walking along the side of the road and these looney drivers won't even change lanes to get away from the outside lane...even when the other lane was completely empty.  as if they were saying, "oh well if i hit your ass...you shouldn't be out here trying to walk on the highway."  it's not an INTERSTATE.  it's just a main road...but it wasn't busy.  jerks.

i've been eating GREAT for the past year, but only because i LOVE healthy foods.  i don't like junk food, fried food, grease...etc.  so i'm good in this area.

my goal...is to exercise some EVERYDAY.

i did get to do 100 crunches last night, 100 front kicks on each leg, 100 donkey kicks on each leg, 20 side kicks on each leg, and leg lifts.  i rode my bike a little up and down the "road" we live on, but it was only for about 10 minutes.

i'm running a marathon on saturday...so i really need to get a good run in before then.  i have a softball game tonight, so i won't get to run.  possibly tomorrow and friday.

please put your foot in my butt and give me ideas of how to make time to exercise.  i already get up at 5:00 a.m. and work until 5:00 pm, my husband goes to work at 5:30 p.m. and i'm with my little tiny binky baby until morning with no car...out in the middle of nowhere....and i have no cable.

help, friends.

try eating BEFORE you leave the house.  i get up at 5:00 am on the days my daughter goes to preschool, and i eat before i start getting dressed.

if not, try mixed fruit in a bowl.  if you're going to be on a bus, you could eat then.  invest in a lunch box with a strap to carry it on your shoulder and pack it full of fruit, nuts, bagels (i like the aluminum foil idea to keep them warm).  the possibilities are endless.

i'm 5'6.5 and i weigh about 125.  i don't weigh but like twice a year, so i'm not really sure, but when i jumped on some scales in a store a few weeks ago, they said 125.

i generally wear about a size 3 or 5 in juniors.  hollister-3.  delia's-5.  hydraulic's...i can wear anything from a 3-7 depending on the actual cut.  in shirts, i wear a medium just because i don't like my shirts to be short and the smalls always are.  i did buy a tee shirt from delia's last weekend that was an XS.  i guess it just depends on how the clothes are made.

Young Calorie Counters do your parents eat like you? May 12 2008

yesterday, i made a homemade lasagna for mother's day and invited my family over to grub.

as the meat was cooking, my mom says, "what kind of meat is that?"  i said, "ground turkey."  she said, "i KNEW it."  (as if she was disgusted.)

it kills me.  first of all, ground turkey tastes JUST like ground beef when it's seasoned and it's a LOT healthier.  why would you want to eat something that you KNOW is unhealthy?

nobody i know eats like i do.  i rarely indulge in fats, sweets, cakes, etc.  most of the people i know eat all of those things on a daily basis.

people tell me "i'm crazy" because i eat fruit, veggies, multi-grains, and very little meat.  these same people are like 50-80 lbs overweight and leaving the drive-thru with a burger and fries, trying to figure out why they can't lose weight when they exercise for 30 minutes everyday.

it doesn't discourage me.  i just keep in mind that i'm going to be a lot healthier than most in my years to come...and we won't even address the state of my body vs. theirs.

Pregnancy & Parenting just a ques about potty training May 08 2008
14:48 (UTC)

when my daughter was 17 months old, i bought her last pack of diapers.  i told her when i bought them that this was the end of diaper road.

when the pack was gone, i took her to the store and had her pick out a pack of panties with whatever character she wanted.  i NEVER bought pull-ups.  NEVER even used them.

she went from diaper to panties.  it took about 3 days and she was completely potty-trained.  she's never wet the bed in the middle of the night, and she even gets up and goes to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

pull-ups only slow the process, because to kids, they're almost the same as diapers.  when they pee or poop in real underwear, it WILL NOT feel good, and after a few trials, they'll get the big idea.

i don't think yo-yoing is a good idea.  i say, either do it and do it all the way, or just leave it alone.

Fitness How do I get better at running when I don't ENJOY it? Or do I give up? May 08 2008

2

my boss asked me to do a 5 mile race with her about two months ago.  when she asked, i said yes, but i really wasn't sure if i was going to REALLY do it.

we started out running individually, and we'd just compare notes.  then we started running together.  in the beginning, we could hardly run for 2 minutes without stopping.  now, i can run for 45 minutes or more.  i ran 3 miles straight on monday.  tuesday, i ran about 1.5 miles.  yesterday, i took off from running because i have softball on wednesday nights.  i HOPE to be able to run today, but it looks like it's going to rain.

running isn't easy.  UNTIL you get used to it, but it doesn't happen overnight.  it takes a lot of time to work up to running consistently for long distances and long periods of time.  while i'm running, i set mini-goals.  i say to myself, "i'm going to keep running until i get to the fourth mailbox."  then i get to the mailbox and i say, "okay, now let's keep going until i get to the third road on the right."  i make it that far, and i make another goal until i actually get back to where i started when i began the run.

i run outside, in the hot sun, in the rain, before the sun comes up, on my lunch breaks, after work.  i switch it up so it doesn't get boring, and i NEVER run alone without my mp3 player.

if you really want to run, you will.  it won't always feel good.  you won't always WANT to EVERYDAY.  but if you want to run, you will.

i too, i have a love/hate relationship with running.  i HATE it while i'm doing it.  i feel guilty if i don't.  i love it when i'm finished.

I, too, want to be a runner, but my biggest obstacle is the dreaded side ache. If that damn pain didn't pop up 2 minutes into my run, I'm sure I"d love to do it, too.

I've tried so many different things and eating habits to prevent it from happening, but it always does.

I can do stairs, elipitcal, bike, walk uphill all fine, but the second my feet start picking up speed, my side starts to cramp.

For the love, someone tell me how to cure this!

when i first started running, i had the same problem.  the first time it happened, i'd eaten a grilled chicken sandwich from chick-fil-a two hours before my run.  i then found out from my running partner that protein is one of the hardest things to digest before a run.

if you keep going through the cramps, it will ease off.  try leaning into the cramp or kinda squeezing the muscle that is aching with your hand WHILE you run, but just don't stop.   you can slow down, but don't stop.  i promise if you keep going, it will ease off after a few minutes.

it may be sore the next day, but if you keep running, the cramps will subside.

Foods How much do you spend on groceries per week May 06 2008
16:55 (UTC)
10

for my husband, myself, and my 3 year old daughter, i usually spend about $160 every two weeks, and on the weeks in between, we spend about $25 dollars at the produce stand.

So, we spend about $370 a month, which averages out to about $92.50 a week.

i look for the yellow stickers with reduced prices on meat, and i only buy poultry which is probably the least expensive.  my husband and i both eat leftovers from dinner for lunches everyday, and $20 worth of produce from the produce stand lasts us a week and a half...and that's basically all i eat for lunch and snacks, just fresh fruit and veggies.

breakfast:  two slices of nature's own double fiber whole wheat toast, with a little margarine (less than a tbsp), and strawberry preserves.  a cup of yo plus digestive strawberry yogurt. [i am so freaking hungry, but i didn't have time to make more than that today.  ugh.]

A lot of them are skinny girls trying to get skinnier and that is not what CC is about.  Make sure if you read a topic with underweight people trying to lose more weight, that you point out that it is not a healthy lifestyle which is what CC is all about.

Also, for those that have lost weight, do you feel more motivated and less like a couch potato? I excercise but I still have a lot of "blah" days, and I feel if I lose a few pounds I will feel more refreshed and less tired all of the time.  Post your results. :)
Thanks.

honestly, friend....YOU look like one of those "skinny" girls that is still trying to lose weight.  from your pictures, your frame is VERY small, and you don't need to lose any weight.  if you lose your goal of 10 lbs, you'll look malnourished.

i can see maybe wanting to exercise and tone up, but losing ANY weight is unrealistic.

and for your "diet" or "food habits", they're not very healthy either.  you might try eating some fresh fruit and vegetables, and a lot more calories in general.

i'd check out the "teens: what did you eat today?" for some ideas of how much you SHOULD be eating.  especially if you plan on exercising for THREE hours a day.

i used to have the same problem.  breakfast was always my hardest obstacle, until i found so many different things that i like to eat FOR breakfast.  now the hardest part is choosing WHAT to eat every morning.

kellogg's nutri grain whole wheat waffles.  (2 waffles=1 serving)
i LOVE eggs cooked over easy with whole wheat toast.  (i get the nature's own double fiber whole wheat bread.  5 grams of fiber in one slice!!)
peanut butter and banana sandwiches on whole wheat bread
whole wheat bagels with cream cheese and strawberry preserves
yogurt
fruit
cereal with bananas
turkey bacon, eggs, plantains, and whole wheat toast

i hope this helps you.  i've even made it a habit to get up like an hour early so i can decide on breakfast and then MAKE breakfast.  it's often the last thing on my mind before i go to sleep!!

we don't have a costco here :( but we do have a sam's club...although i'm not a member.  (that is something i've been saying i'm going to join...so i guess i should get that done.)

i don't know if you guys have a publix grocery store, but their organic/vegetarian section is pretty stocked, so i'll check that out there.

breakfast: two kellogg's nutrigrain whole wheat waffles, a little squirt of syrup, two eggs cooked overeasy, a banana, and a cup of 1% milk.

lunch: whole wheat spaghetti, meatless spaghetti sauce with added mushrooms, onions, and fresh tomatoes, a side of steamed broccoli, and a piece of ghetto-mess garlic bread...(that is off tha chain.)

snack: granny smith apple, navel orange, and yo plus digestive strawberry yogurt.

dinner: we're hitting up "lamb's bread" (a vegan restaurant) tonight, so i'll probably have a veggie plate...and hopefully, i'll get to try some quinoa!

peace out, brown trouts.

i'm going to a vegan restaurant friday night...and i'm really really excited about it....

Lucky. We don't have any "all-vegetarian" restauants around here, although ethnic places and upscale diners often have a pretty good selection of veg foods. If you can find it on the menu, I reccommend quinoa. It's a small, round-shaped grain and tastes amazing - not to mention it contains all the essential amino proteins. If you're into that. ^^

i called yesterday for a menu, but they said they're menu changes everyday, so they don't have an "official" menu.  after doing some research, i read that it's like a blue plate diner where you pick a "meat" of course it's not real meat, but a protein choice, and three vegetable sides.

have you ever tried any type of mock?  i read they have some of that there in different varieties.  i'll look for the quinoa.  i was curious as to what that was when i saw it in another forum somewhere.

wow.  i was JUST about to post this exact same topic.  over the past month, i've been eating a diet plentiful in fruits and vegetables.  very little dairy, very little meat, and all whole wheat pastas and breads.

i feel like i am pregnant with a FOOD BABY 24/7.  i've taken TWO pregnancy tests because i felt so bloated and have been filled with gas.  even if i eat just a small piece of fruit, my stomach bulges out like i am 6 months pregnant.   i look like an ethiopian because the rest of my body is tiny.
