Weight Loss How exact calories to I need to consume a day to actually LOSE weight? Jun 10 2009

I can tell you, it is very easy to under or over estimate the number of calories you are consuming.  I weigh everything I eat with a digital kitchen scale.  Most foods on this website can be added to your daily food log and will calculate the exact calories based on the weight of the food.  Using volume as a measure or eyeballing does not give accurate enough results.  I agree that you should log all of your food and activity on this website, but go the extra and get yourself an accurate scale. Portion Control is the key.  Take your time and enjoy your food.  Eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and lean meats.

When I first started out, I found trouble food in my journal.  Things that were adding many calories.  I then started to substitute.  Some examples below:

Large multigrain or white bread = Low calorie wheat bread

Sour Cream = Fat Free Sour Cream or Fat Free Greek Yogurt.

Salami or Bologna = Turkey or Ham

Soda or Juice = Water or Seltzer

Peanut Butter = PB2

Eggs = Egg Beaters

Syrup = Sugar Free Syrup

Potato Chips = Rice Snacks or Pita Chips or Baked Doritos

Any Sugary Cereal = Kashi Go Lean or Fiber One or Oatmeal

Mac and Cheese = Brown Rice or Baked Potato

Butter = I can't Believe its not butter

Ranch Dressing = Lite Italian

  1. Quaker Weight Control Oatmeal
  2. Fiber One with Honey Clusters and Bananas or fresh berries
  3. Egg Beaters Southwest Omelet (1/2 C. Egg Beaters, some sliced onions, peppers, mushrooms, Turkey, or Ham, Non-Fat Mozzarella Cheese)  Top it off with some salsa and/or Greek Yogurt.  MMMMM good.  You can also add some reduced calorie whole wheat bread and some sugar free strawberry preserves on it.

I drink a big glass of water and then take the dog for a walk.  I go about 1.5 miles in 30 minutes.  When I get back to the house, I drink more water.  Later at night I have a piece of fruit or a couple of rice cakes (Cheddar or Caramel flavor).  Seems to be working well for me.  I used to binge from about 1/2 hour after dinner until I went to bed.
