| Weight Loss | Can anyone provide insight? I thought I was doing well... | Jun 28 2008 16:35 (UTC) |

I am at the same frustrating point of trying to lose the last three pounds to get to the magic number of 125 lbs, and I'm 5'7 and 30. I also averaged 1500 calories a day and run 4-5x a week burning over 500 calories per run (I have a heart rate monitor, so I know this is accurate). My body fat percentage is also about 21%. I finally decided to increase my daily average intake to 1800 calories and on days I do long runs (8+ miles) to eat at least 2000 calories. My body is reacting quite well to these changes and seems willing to let go of that extra weight instead of holding onto the calories. The hard part is figuring out how to add healthy calories instead of chowing on a cookie or brownie to fill the gap. I added a boiled egg to breakfast and started to drink a protein shake before or after my run. You might want to consider some of these changes too. |

mrsdagle, I don't want a protein shake because I prefer to get nutrients from real food. |

Try running. As crazy as it sounds, I've heard that it tends to break down muscle, which is why most running athletes have scrawny legs. Running has transformed me because I tend to gain in my butt and thighs, which is also the hardest area to lose weight from. Since I started running the inches have melted off and I feel spectacular. |

I believe part of the reason is related to the fact running is a weight bearing exercise - your entire body has to support the impact of your body being thrust into the air and landing over and over. Walking (or even speed walking) doesn't invlove this kind of impact or require as much balance. |

I'm the same way, I have a tiny waist but huge thighs. They say that belly fat is a lot easier to lose than weight bellow the waist . . . I've been running and that has helped a lot, I read somewhere that running actually breaks down the muscles in your legs. |

| Weight Loss | BMI: is under 20 BMI underweight or under 18.5? | Mar 30 2008 23:37 (UTC) |

I don't have any telling pictures to post, but I'm a small framed pear shape. All my extra weight is carried in my hips and thighs and they still have a long ways to go before they'll fit into a size s bikini bottom without bulging. If you transfered the weight to my breasts I would probably think I had a damn sexy body . . . Before I lost weight, I wore a size 4 dress shirt and size 6 pants (and should have worn a size 8). Now my size 6 pants just fit like they were made to. |

Hey that's really great! I started my MBA and gained 10 pounds and have been working my butt off (literally) since New Year's to get back down to my "normal" size. I've lost 9 pounds so far, one more to go for my first goal and about 5 more for my ultimate goal. I tell you what though, my period throws me off because I just want to eat everything! I really love eating and try to do the same - eat what I love in smaller portions. Great job! |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | Why do people think that holding their baby will make me want to keep the child I am carrying? | Mar 30 2008 02:14 (UTC) |

First of all - you are awesome for carrying the baby to term! I once thought I was pregnant and thought my life was going to end but the hardest decision I ever made was not to abort and go through the pain of informing my family and friends that I was single and pregnant. I cried for days too and was so depressed, but it takes a lot of courage and guts to face everyone and carry on to the end. Kudos!! I'll be praying for you ((((hugs)))) |

I am a pear shape - when I gain, it all goes to my butt and thighs to the point my thighs are the widest part of my body! I've recently discovered that running is a huge help and I feel like I finally have my legs under control. My upper body has always been skinny as a rail, even with humongo thighs. |

I didn't go to the gyn until I was 26 and was forced to if I wanted to join the Peace Corps and I didn't have any problems. In Japan, you are not required to visit the gyn until you are 30, want birth control, or get pregnant. I wouldn't worry about it too much at this time in your life. As for your period, it will probably be painful and unpredictable for the first several years. I used to cramp up so bad I just wanted to lay in a fetal position. Be sure to drink lots of water to help with the bloating and DON'T overdose on painkillers like tylenol or advil - try alternating them. Also try raspberry tea, it has been used since the ancient days to help with cramping. Traditional Medicinals is a really good brand for herbal teas (I use them for everything from the common cold to relieving constipation). If you still can't function, talk to your regular family doctor - he'll be able to give you a prescription for the pain that won't make your stomach bleed (I took advil with codeine for several years). The weight gain is normal and among us here at CC, the most hated aspect (aside from cramping). It will go away with your period unless you are like me and want to stuff your face with everything in sight during that time. I will usually stall in my weight loss during my period and the week before and as soon as it ends I drop a few pounds right away. |

You are tying your shoe laces too tight. I had the same problem for a while and loosened up my laces and that fixed the problem. |

| It depends on the type of protein shake. Slim fast will not curb your appetite (it doesn't mine), but there are protein shakes that have twice as much protein (and calories) that will defenitely fill you up. | |||
| Weight Loss | rather embarassing question here. | Mar 02 2008 01:58 (UTC) |

| When I started to eat healthier, I started going a lot less to the point I was having other issues and was taking stool softners or drinking smooth move on a regular basis. I was drinking a lot of water and increased my fiber take so I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong until my boyfriend came to town and I ate some pizza - everything kinda slid out after that. I would have to say not enough fats and oils in your diet can also cause constipation, because when I eat like I used to, I have no problems. | |||

| Foods | Diet Soda | Feb 07 2008 01:04 (UTC) |

| I had the same question a while ago and when I googled diet soda and dieting most of the research I saw said diet sodas actually make you want to eat more as your body looks for the calories diet soda doesn't have (thus craving ensues). Other studies show that you are more likely to be obese if you drink diet soda, but I have a feeling people are more likely to drink diet soda if they are overweight. I love diet coke but have cut way back to only once a week with a slice of pizza or something that goes perfect with coke. | |||

| Weight Loss | odd question about digestive health | Feb 07 2008 00:41 (UTC) |
1 |
| Ever since I was in the Peace Corps my digestive system has not been quite right so I've done some research and going less than 3 times a week constitutes as constipation and more than 3 times a day is diarrhea. Sounds to me like your body is in the right place. | |||
| Weight Loss | Do I wait until I feel hungry before I should eat? | Feb 02 2008 14:41 (UTC) |
|
| I don't wait until I'm hungry because if I did I would begin to crave things and/or eat too much. However, I have found that my body has adjusted and I can't eat as much as I used to in one sitting. Yesterday I was at a conference where boxed lunches were provided that had a healthy chicken sandwich, two salads and a dessert. I found I could only eat the sandwich and so I saved the salads and dessert for dinner and a snack later. | |||
| Weight Loss | are eating lean cuisine's and healthy choice meals bad? | Jan 27 2008 23:59 (UTC) |
1 |
I'm a MBA student that has no time to cook so Lean Cuisine is a life saver for me and I never have to guess how many calories are in the meal. As for common complaints: High in sodium: cut back on your salt intake in other meals and drink plenty of water. Cooking is better and healthier: true, but if you don't have time to cook you still have to eat something and LC is much better than taco bell. They don't fill you up: I thought so too, until I started eating 5-6 mini meals a day (only one is a lean cuisine) that keeps me full all the time. They have a lot of preservatives: if you are really worried about this, try Amy's frozen dishes instead. They're also delicious, albeit more expensive because of the all-natural ingredients.

| Foods | Want to like cottage cheese! | Jan 27 2008 00:19 (UTC) |

I have to agree with the people who said they had to find the right brand. I love cottage cheese and couldn't figure out why my boyfriend hated it - until I tried some really icky cottage cheese at a salad bar. Get the right brand for you and it might make all the difference. Other than that, I like to mix half a cup of cottage cheese with light activa yogurt - only 160 calories and full of protein. You'll be full for hours. |
