Weight Loss my boss makes me fat... Nov 21 2009

I find that having control over certain things can help with stress in other situations you CANT control (aka- your crazy boss)

Try this mindset - food is something you DO have control over. You can't control your boss or her e-mails or her ranting and raving, but you can control what you put into your body! Take control, keep control, have control!!! It will make you feel better!

In my own defense, I in NO way was being attacking or malicious in my comment. I never suggested any disorder and I did not state anything about calorie intake. I simply stated that at 16 she is at a perfectly healthy weight.

Kankan- I definitely disagree.  Being stuck in a body you are insecure about is no way to spend the "best" years of life.

5'3" and 124 lbs is considered being stuck in a body you are insecure about? Wow. At the age of 16 your body is still developing and growing, heck I didn't even have my period yet at age 16. It is not a good idea to begin to diet at such a young (and underdeveloped) age.

Promoting low calorie diets to those under 18 is incredibly irresponsible.

pmorabit you are RIGHT!

You shouldn't just focus on being THIN. It is about being healthy, feeling GOOD, living well. If you can't tell the nutritional value difference between a cookie and an apple you definitely have some reading to do!!! Also, you must DESTROY this mindset; because you should be eating now the way you plan on eating for the rest of your life. :o)

Plus, who can eat just 100 calories worth of cookies?
I usually get started until I'm at about 1000 and wallowing in a sea of self-pity!

Try to eat every 3-4 hours light meals. After the 4th hour your body will go into starvation mode and everything you eat after that starvation mode will be stored as fat. Hope this helps.. Good luck.

That is ridiculous. So wouldn't that mean breakfast would be stored as fat, since most of us sleep for more than 4 hours?

Why would you resurrect a 2-year-old thread to say something that uneducated?

Breakfast=breaking the fast. Starvation mode does exist, however it is thrown around much more than it should be. Starvation mode takes more than 4 hours to get to, that is ridiculous- but there are studies that have shown that the body works more efficiently with smaller broken up meals throughout the day (some say it is like feeding a fire...) but it all comes down to what works for you and isn't going to send you to the cookie jar at night time...

I'm 18, currently weigh 132ish, and am 5'4. I want to get to 115 - I've been there before, so I know it's possible! I gained ten pounds from eating 1500 in two weeks...

I exercise when I can - I walk about 2 miles a day on average, do situps, sometimes run around.

I'm eating 1500; I was orignially eating 700-900.

I HIGHLY doubt you gained 10 lbs in two weeks.

1 lb of fat=3500 calories (this means cals OVER your BMR which is probably upwards 2000 cals because you are only 18 and probably move around a lot) That means that you ate 17,500 calories over your BMR for two weeks. For me that would mean eating almost 6 THOUSAND calories a day. Even if your body was maintaining on 700-900 calories a day you would have to eat around 4000 calories a day to have gained that (not 1500).... so something else must be off... or else your body was retaining water and it will/would have dropped in the matter of a day or two.

To sort of repeat what melkor said, the thing celebrities say about how they lose weight are HILARIOUS. "I do yoga to look like this" Yeah right. Most of them are lifting heavy weights and doing HIIT. The celebrities that DO crash diet usually end up ballooning again- (Ex: Janet Jackson )

I had an entire idea of what to say until I saw that your only 16.

Stop dieting and worry about your weight when your older!

Don't ruin the best years of your life thinking about weight (especially since you are at a HEALTHY weight, not overweight and you probably look FINE!)

Reading your posts, you seem to come across as having some issues.  Explain how you are less healthy at 112 than you would be at 110? You say you have excess fat and obviously think you need to lose weight considering this is what you said:

"I have a small frame though too. So I'll probably take it step by step and lose down to 110 and see how that is, then down to 107, then finally 105 if I think it is still needed. I can definitely tell that I could lose some weight and not be too thin because I have plenty of excess fat on my arms and legs mainly. I would like to tone, but I want to lose weight and inches as well."

So, again I say, you are already at the lower end of a healthy weight for you, you are not fat and don't need to lose weight, and perhaps you should talk to your doctor about all of this and get a medical check up and a medical opinion to see if there is any medical reason you should lose weight.

It just seems to me that you want people to say that you need to lose weight as confirmation of your belief that you think you need to lose weight....again, you're obviously already very slim and if you think you need to lose weight, perhaps you do have some body image issues.

I never said I was fat. Not once. There absolutely is no medical reason that I should lose weight. It is merely vanity weight. I mentioned the fat on my legs and arms just to assure people that I am not one of those stick figures that thinks they need to lose 15 pounds. You should be able to see in my picture that that is not the case (quick clarification-this statement does not mean I think I am fat, overweight, or anything along those lines. It merely means I wish I looked more toned). I already addressed the idea of my first goals of weight loss and changed my mind and decided to get to 110 and from there consistently work on exercise and toning my body. I have already said that it isn't even about the number on the scale for me. I want to look more fit! I want to be able to see muscle in my legs and to have slim toned arms. Also, if I wanted to lose to 105, I don't see how that would be a problem because that is still within my healthy weight (103-?? I don't know the upper end of it). I thought more about it and am not sure that 105 pounds would even look right on me. I don't want to look like a stick figure. I want feminine curves. I want to be slim and toned just like almost every other female wants to be. I will admit that I am very critical of my body but I don't think I have anymore body image issues than the next gal. I appreciate everyone's opinions I just wish everyone wouldn't jump to conclusions so fast.

Kirstin, just ignore their snarky remarks.

I understand what you were asking, I too was at the healthy end of my weight range and still unhappy with the way my body looked. What you might be dealing with is a little bit of "skinny fat." What I recommend you do is not focus on losing weight-meaning stop eating at a deficit- because your body cannot build muscle when it is on a deficit .
Try upping your calories and upping your weight-training and you will end up seeing a more firm version of yourself without actually dropping any lbs- they will simply convert to muscle. So instead of losing actual weight your fat lbs will become muscle lbs and muscle takes up less space so you will appear smaller and more firm without being any "lighter." :) Good luck!

And everyone else leave her alone already!

I just want to go ahead and throw out there the fact that I think 90% of the comments given to this poor girl were completely out of line and immature.

If any of you with sharp tongues knows anything about body perceptions and personal body distortion problems you would realize that sometimes those who are thin do not feel as though they are thin; I find it very understandable that she came to a weight-loss forum to ask for advice about weight. Get off your high horses and stop attacking others.

To be perfectly honest, when you begin to eat more you might put on weight at first. But you must keep going because with the active lifestyle you live you NEED to fuel your body.

For example: I work out as much as you and eat 1800-2000 calories a day and I weigh 123lbs at 5'8". It's all about trying to eat the amount of GOOD foods that can fuel your body and help you perform to your best ability. You can't drive a car on empty for very long before it dies.

Good luck :)

My question is, everyone preaches moderation. What if moderation isn't for everyone?? Doesn't it take about a month to change your "taste-buds" as they say?

Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying there, but moderation isn't about changing your taste buds, it's about incorporating those foods you enjoy into your diet in a reasonable manner.

I imagine moderation isn't for everyone. I'm one of the lucky ones that was so pig headed going into this that when I do indulge, I'm pretty anal about measuring out a serving and only eating that...

So far, I have only found one food that "moderation" doesn't work on for me, and that is one specific flavor of Frozen Yogurt. It is so tasty that I just can't keep it in the house! Everything else though, I've found that if I take a serving and take the time to enjoy it, instead of scarfing down twice as much w/o tasting it like I used to, it's actually all I need to satisfy my craving. :o)

Basically what I'm trying to say there is that I can't do moderation. BECAUSE I feel like I truly am addicted to the processed junk! So I am considering trying cold-turkey. But from the responses everyone has given (thank you!) I am hearing pretty much that moderation is do-able AFTER changing taste-buds.

So thats what I will do.

COLD TURKEY here i come! Dplatzer, lets do it!

Fitness You can't build muscle with a deficit, so why am I lifting weights? Jun 18 2009
01:28 (UTC)

Weight training is important for more than just building muscle. Runners who do a lot of cardio lose bone density. Lifting weights helps to reduce this.

Here is some evidence backing this up.

"Numerous studies demonstrate strength training's ability to increase bone mass, especially spinal bone mass. According to Keeton, a research study by Ontario's McMaster University found that a year-long strength training program increased the spinal bone mass of postmenopausal women by nine percent. Furthermore, women who do not participate in strength training actually experience a decrease in bone density."

http://www.naturalnews.com/010528.html

A decrease in bone density is especially bad for women as we are the ones who usually end up with osteoporosis (especially elderly women).

That is VERY understandable. I think a lot of people run into the same problem. Start small, maybe work in a 10 or 20 minute jog everyday. Do strength training at night before bed. Stuff like that. Eventually you will start to feel it, and it will make you want to fit it in!

There are a lot of ways to get around spending a lot of $ on food. Instead of mac n cheese- go for the peanut butter (which is also very cheap and full of great things!) Spend your money wisely and it is very easy to shop for healthy foods!

As for being tired- when you begin to exercise regularly your energy levels rise. So not only will you be exercising, but you will more than likely have higher levels of energy by default. Bonus? Yes!

Get your head in the game, girl! Anyone can do this! All it takes is motivation, and that is what we are here for! To motivate you!

I would just like to throw my two cents in here. I am a girl and I have been lifting HEAVY weights for over 2 years and I am still not "bulky."

If you have the magical genes to become bulky you should feel lucky rather than fear it. Because building muscle is not easy, especially for a woman.

I find it very interesting to see all of the different viewpoints on this subject!

Although, I believe it to be a person-to-person thing. There is no set way of thinking, everyone has their own relationship with food and therefore their own body/weight/issues/non-issues.

I was always a very self-disciplined person without ever knowing it. One day I decided to get "fit" and not only did I develop my relationship with food but I began to understand how people gain weight. If you are never told the things we learn on CC in your life, you may not understand why if you eat a gigantic bowl of granola 4 times a day, you will gain weight. Even though it is granola? Maybe this is not coming together very well, but I think the first step to going where you want to go is learning where you are, and being able to recognize these differences helps a lot.

We all have to put together our relationships with food and the relationship that has with our bodies. In all it comes down to what is more important to you.
