I use antibacterial dish detergent. I fill a large plastic container with hot water and soap and then place the fruit/vegetables in. I agitate them in the water and then let them sit for a few minutes.

With objects like apples, cucumbers, oranges, peppers, etc. - I scrub them down after they are done soaking. The rough side of a sponge works pretty well to get off the wax film that is usually on them. Then I rinse them in clean water and let them drain in the drain board.

With more delicate fruits and veggies - grapes, berries, basil, lettuc, spinach etc. - I soak them in the soapy water then place them in a caulander and let hot water run over them with the spray nosel on the faucet. If you don't have this type of faucet, try not to use the faucet at full force because it can bruise them. Once I am done rinsing them in hot water, I repeat the process with cold water (lettuce and basil really perk up with cold water).

Hi everyone,

I agree - it sounds like we all got a little off track and need some support and encourage to get back on track.

Chattnoel- I am sorry to hear about the personal struggles facing you. I am glad you found the opportunity to turn them around and make your family and bond with your husband stronger!

As far as my weight loss/gain history goes... I have been relentlessly working out 3-4 (sometimes 6) days a week since the end of September. What has happened? Nothing! I have continued to gain weight (and no its not muscle because I am getting wider and chubbier in the mid-section/hips/thighs). So as of today I am up to 143lbs. This is 16lbs heavier than I was in May. Cry I am 5lbs away from where I was exactly 1 year ago and I hate it.

My boyfriend, who is amazing and loves me for who I am and even the chubbier person I have become, bought me some dresses for Christmas. He said he missed the confident me from back in May and wanted me to feel sexy like I did back then. Well I put them on and I looked in the mirror and I cried. I couldn't stop crying.

In his mind nothing has changed about me --- he knows I've gained weight but he keeps telling me every day how beautiful I am how much he loves my body. I wish I felt the same way. I look in the mirror and I get angry with myself... and I get frustrated because I am doing everything right but still getting heavier. I am eating the same calories as last year and possibly more cardio - except this year, I am gaining  weight and not losing.

I measured myself last night - I almost started crying again. Bust: 36" / Waist: 31" / Hips: 37". I miss the old me when this was 34"/29"/33" .... the me from May.

So  I really want to get back on track. If my weight loss isn't happening by the end of January I am going to my doctor and showing her everything from this site:  my logged food journals, my logged activities and my logged weight. I am worried I may be overlooking something and maybe she can figure it out.

Hi everyone,

I can't believe its November already! Come December, I will have been on the healthy weight loss journey (and a member of CC) for 1 year. It is pretty discouraging to think I am halfway between my starting weight last year and my goal I reached in May. Hence why I call this a journey - there will always be ups and downs and forks in the roads - and lessons learned.

Ashley - I am also dreading the holidays because of all the yummy foods and treats. I survived last year by taking a small taste of everything. I hate to forbid myself from food, I find that I overeat if I do that, so instead I sample everything and then have a little more of my favorite item. I usually never have room for dessert, so I end up eating that for breakfast the next day. Sweet tooth? Yea... a tad.

Since I last logged in my weight has pretty much stayed consistent - and my gym work outs just as intense.

I know the advice is to lift light weights and lots of reps combined with cardio... but it just isn't working for me. Last year, I lost all my weight without lifting weights --- it was all cardio. And I think this is why I am stuck at my current weight of 137.5lbs. I know the number on the scale isn't the only factor to consider - but  my pants aren't getting any looser! AHH.

Anyone else encounter similar challenges? My thoughts are to stop weight lifting for 1-2 months and see if I am able to lose weight. What do you think?

~ Amanda

Hey everyone! I am so happy to us all getting back on track. I think it says a lot about us - especially since we all came back - it shows how important each one of us to the other - and thats great!!

Chattynoel- I also have a  deficiency in B12 but I don't take the shot, I take the small vitamins. They have helped a lot. But yes, I know what you mean by having no energy and no wanting to move. My doctor said my deficiency was due to the fact that I wasn't getting enough B12 naturally through my diet... what can I say - salad just doen't cut it.

Lifeinkcals - I want to try some of the popcorn you mentioned! Where do you get it?

Apointe - I can't believe we came back on the same day. Congrats on the promotion btw! I know you deserve it! So yes, let's get motivated and stay motivated! We were both so close to our goals at the beginning of the summer. I can't believe you were down here for the game last night! You are truly a dedicated Phillies fan!

And fhstke - good for you, still losing weight and making wise decisions!

So for me, I've continued to workout 6 days a week. I am exhausted at night, passing out by 10pm usually. it is a miracle if I stay up later - and if I do, I feel dizzy and almost drunk. My new doctor said my resting heart rate is really good -- so that means the 2-3 days of 60min of cardio is working. I feel like my mid section is getting toned - but my legs are possibly getting worse.

Week 1 - 138

Week 2 - 137.5

My calorie deficit is usually between 400-1,000. I feels like I am not making enough progress, but I guess I shouldn't complain - at least I am losing. It seems like a long journey to reach my goal.....

Hi everyone...

I am back on CC - and will be here forever now! Smile It took me a while to face the truth and I had trouble convincing myself that I can do it again - meaning that even though I am almost right back to where I was when I first joined Cry ---  I can and will lose the weight I gained back.

I have missed you all and I know I need to do a lot of catching up (aka reading through this thread since I last signed in).

Like Lisseth83 - I gained weight this summer. For me it was approximately 15 lbs from May to October. It was a horrible cycle... the further away I got from my goal weight the easier it was to continue down the path of destroying all my hard work. Frown I consumed food like I had been starved for years --- I was always (and I mean ALWAYS) eating. My boyfriend was in shock... and even had said things to me a few times. But I was stressed, still having trouble adjusting to life on my own and turning to food.

Last month I joined a gym by me. It's halfway between where I live and where I work and one of my best friends goes there too. We try to have after work workout dates and when we do have them, I feel like I can exercise forever. The rate: $99 for a year. How awesome is that?!?!

I have become addicted to the elliptical and spend between 30-60 minutes on it a day working out and sweating like crazy. I swear, when I get off it looks like I just got out of a pool. Gross, I know.

Two nights ago I had a meeting with a trainer at the gym. I told him my weight loss goals of 25lbs (going from 140lbs to 115lbs). I told him how being  on CC and calorie counting and running 2-3 miles 4-5x a week worked like a charm for me. We made a weight lifting plan for me and incorporated plenty of cardio into it.

I am excited to start getting back on track! I am sorry I haven't been a part of this group for a long time.

Thank you all for giving me the support I needed to get myself back on track. You are all a big part of why  I am here today, writing my thoughts/feelings and goals.

Here we go round 2. This will be the last round because from here on in... this will be my lifestyle. As my trainer told me "you will work out almost every day of your life, you will come to love it and will not be able to go without it. your friends and family will know that any plans needs to be made after your workouts and they will learn (over time) to appreciate you new lifestyle and eating habits and will with time, support you. don't let anything get in the way of your goals."

Week 1 - 138lb

Hi everyone! I am sorry I haven't checked in--- but today marks my day of getting back on track - officially.

I am all moved into my new apartment --- since Wednesday I have been getting it organized. It is exciting. I don't have much food yet but once I can go food shopping, I will be sure to buy only healthy items.

Yesterday I unpacked the scale and stepped on it --- 133lbs. I am really not happy and I can feel those 5lbs I put on since mid-June. I can even tell that some of my clothes don't fit me very well.

Wednesday I start work... so today and tomorrow I hope to go outside and exercise. I am not very familiar with the area, so I don't want to go too far. I also had the movers pack my bike, so I can bike ride some days instead of just running every day.

It is time to get back on track. From here on in, my new life has started. I can get back on track. I will get back on track. And I want to lose these pesky 5lbs I gained. Then focus on getting to my goal weight of 125lbs.

Congrats Fhstke!

Welcome sueswan and hegreen! You are joining a great group of motivated losers!

Another tough week... the scale is up even higher --- 132.5lbs. AHHHHHHH. I have so much going on and can't even find the time to exercise. It is horrible and it frustrates me.Cry

I went running with a colleague along the West Side Highway in NYC - it was beautiful -- during sunset --- a slight breeze. We walked 1 mile to our starting point. Ran 2 miles down along the river and then walked all the way back to our office in Times Sq. All in all? About 5 miles. I now have a blister on my foot. UGH.

It felt good to run -- and I ran/walked 20 minutes on my treadmill Monday night. But that's it -only 2 times this week. I am so frustrated and stressed out ----

And I am ashamed to admit that my late-night sleep-eating has started again. I thought i nipped it in the butt - but no...... sure enough, when stress hits me, I end up waking up in the middle of the night, scarfing down food and barely remembering doing it. How horrible. Embarassed

Tuesday is the last day at my old job -- then I move Wednesday - into my apartment. Living on my own for the first time...

Scary thought.

I just hope that once I get settled into my new lifestyle I can lose these pounds I have recently gained. I am so angry with myself and hope the anger will just spur me to lose the weight and keep it off. I miss the 120's....

Hi everyone...

Things have been crazy recently... and I haven't weighed-in the past 2 weeks. Not a good idea. They were 128.5 and 129.5lbs. Well... today....

131.5lbs. Cry

I am up --- and I don't like it. But, I know why I am up. The past three weeks have been a whirlwind of events. Long story short, I am moving to Bucks County, PA to work for a branding communications agency. Between having to lie about being "sick" to go to my interviews, receiving the offer, keeping this knowledge from my wonderful manager, not having time to find an apartment, moving out of my house --- for the first time since college --- and starting a new job....

I have been extremely stressed out. I haven't been sleeping at night because of my nerves and my IBS kicked in pretty bad. Wine was my drink of the night, each and every night -- it helped me go to sleep. Carbs? Couldn't get enough of them. Exercise? No energy or time to commit to it.

After all this is said and done, I know things will only continue to get more crazy. I want to try to exercise at least 3 times next week and then... ill have to put that on the back burner until I am all moved and settled in to my very own one bedroom apartment with a balcony, lots of closets, washer and dryer in the unit and plenty of green grass and sidewalks for me to run on. Oh and it is a cat friendly place too! So my cat gets to come with me!

AHHHH. All of this is exciting and stressful! I hate that the scale really isn't happy with me - but its my own fault. Embarassed

Apointe - we are at the same exact weight! I know we can get to 125 - we just have to put our minds to it!

Glad you are feeling better chattynoel - and go you for maintaining.

I have come to realize that when I keep most meals and snacks consistent day-in and day-out, it is so much easier to stay on track. I let myself eat up to 1,000 calories during the day and leave 400 calories aside for dinner. This has been working out pretty well for me, especially since I never know what my mom is preparing for dinner.

And now, I can also ballpark estimate calories and keep a running mental tally of them for the day... so on the weekends, I have started to log less and less. As I get closer to maintenance, I hope this is a good way to wean me off the daily logging. We shall see!

I don't have the best before full-length images in there, so I used one from 2005 (which is basically the same way I looked full-length when I started CC in Dec. 2007).

My most recent pics are within the past month --- and I still 3ish pounds away from my goal. You know how pesky those last few are....

Weight Loss why do you want to lose weight? Jun 20 2008
21:39 (UTC)

Why did I want to lose weight?

To be healthy.

Skinny is not the right term. I am nowhere near skinny --- I still have meat on my bones and I am FINE with that.

Now I can run for a while and not feel like I am dying. I can bend over and tie my shoelaces. I can wrap a bath towel around me and cover all of myself.

I wanted to be healthy because I need to be able to care for myself before I can care for others (i.e., the family I would love to have one day).

I wanted to be healthy because I experienced first-hand what unhealthy can do to a family (my dad had a heart attack back in Oct. and it was the single scariest moment in my life) - it can tear them apart, instill a lifelong fear that they may wake up and find a loved one no longer with them.

I wanted to be healthy so I can be a role model for those around me who have given up on being healthy. Anything is possible. If you care enough about yourself and those who love you, you will make a difference and you will make the healthy choices and you will become a healthy person.

I wanted to be healthy because life is too short not to be. There is too much to see and too much to do - and to do it all and to live long enough and be able to enjoy it all - you must be healthy.

I wanted to be healthy because my body needs ME to take care of it.

Weight Loss How do skinny people sit? Jun 20 2008
21:20 (UTC)

I have the same problem too! I have only lost 20lbs, but boy-oh-boy am I uncomfortable sitting for long times (on hard chairs/surfaces) and even laying in bed. Don't get me wrong, I am happy at my weight (5'3" and 128.5lbs) but I agree - the extra padding was nice.

I don't like feeling my butt bones on the seat and when I lay in bed, I hate how my hips and shoulder bones dig into the mattress.

Maybe it is time for a down pillow-top mattress pad?!?! I have always wanted one... never thought it was worth the splurge... but heck, maybe it is!

When sitting on a harder surface, I fold one leg under me to kinda boost me up. When that leg starts to fall asleep, I shift my weight and switch legs.

At night time, I layer on the clothes, and sleep ontop of my blankets and sheets -- under the comforter. That helps a little, but not much.

A friend of mine who lost 25lbs and now weighs 100lbs (she is definitely very thin) - I asked her if she noticed that her butt bones hurt after sitting for a long time. She laughed at my comment, but said yes and that she tends to avoid sitting on hard surfaces.

What about an inflatable hemmoroid cushion?!! HAHAH. JK!

Another week has come and gone... phew.

Welcome newcomers! With the support of this group, you will be in good hands and will have a lot of caring people to help you through those "I give up" phases.

I had a rough week energy-wise. For whatever reason I couldn't muster of my strength to do much... I exercised twice. BLAH. I feel really weak and tired all the time. I wonder if it is because I stopped exercising for three weeks. It is so hard to get back on track from taking time off. Even though this is a lifetime adjustment and commitment, sometimes I really wish I didn't have to work so hard at being healthy.

My weight log is getting lengthy...

  • sw - 140
  • wk 1 - 139
  • wk 2 - 140.5
  • wk 3 - 138
  • wk 3.5 - 135.5
  • wk 4 - 138
  • wk 5 - 136
  • wk 6 - 135.5
  • wk 7 - 133.5
  • wk 8 - 132
  • wk 9 - 134
  • wk 9.5 - 132
  • wk 10 - 133
  • wk 11 - 130
  • wk 12 - 130
  • wk 13 - 131.5
  • wk 14 - 129
  • wk 15 - 129
  • wk 16 - 128
  • wk 17 - 129
  • wk 18 - 128.5

THESE LAST 3.5LBS are driving me crazy! Come on 125lbs.... I know I can do it - but how much longer will this take? Granted I haven't been trying that hard to lose them, I just can't get the scale to go down. And to think, I wanted to set a new goal of 120lbs.... who was I kidding? My body must be fighting me every ounce of the way.

With the nice weather, I hope I can get outside and enjoy it! Have a great weekend all!

Hey weight-losers!

First week back at work after my two vacations and I all can think about is when can I go back to the Outer Banks!

Wrap-up of vacations:

For about 5 days after I got back from Mexico I couldn't eat anything- not cool!

The Outer Banks was an awesome trip - I can't wait to go back there!! Staying with 15 other people was OK. I was worried about the food situation since everyone likes junk food and I was worried about the meals at night too -- not to mention the drinking.

I ate cereal/pancakes every morning, had a healthy sandwich for lunch and for dinner - we broke up into 2 teams of 8 people - and we ate in shifts. Our team all took turns making a meal in pairs. I offered to make a salad each night - trying to 1) encourage my friends to eat healthy and 2) give me a backup option to eat and fill up on incase dinner wasn't really what I eat.

I was surprised to see how many people don't eat vegetables- none at all! I couldn't believe it. It is so important to eat veggies and fruit and my friends would happily eat carbs and nothing but that for their meals, every day.

General post:

Like fhstke I caught up on all posts: hang in there those of us who are struggling to get those last few pesky pounds off. With the nicer (and sometimes a little too hot) weather, we should all be able to fit in some more outdoor activities. Remember, don't think of them as exercises, think of them as something you enjoy to do... gardening, walking around your neighborhood, hiking in the woods, strolling through the local park, ect.

Also, with this warmer weather, it is important to stay hydrated. We may also retain more water -- so please please do not panic if the scale is up.

From experience, I can tell you water weight does exist! Here is my weight from the past week...

  • Saturday: 136.5
  • Sunday: 133
  • Monday: 131
  • Tuesday: 130.5
  • Wednesday: 130
  • Thursday: 130.5

AND TODAY.... 129

Between being sick for the first half of OBX vacation and drinking every night, I didn't know what to think of my weight.

When I left for Mexico I was 127.5lbs, when I got back I was 128lbs. When I returned from the Outer Banks I was 136.5lbs and now I am down to 129lbs. That is a crazy amount of fluctuation, but after everything evened out - it appears I was able to maintain!

Exercise-wise I have been slacking... but I hope to get back on track next week. I really miss running!

Hi everyone,

Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a nice Memorial Day weekend!

I am back from Mexico - and sick. Undecided UGH. I haven't been able to keep anything in my system since I woke up Thursday morning. NOT FUN. The digestive problems started Tuesday afternoon and got increasingly worse. This morning I tried an applesauce cup - my stomach rejected it. I have felt so crappy (no pun intended) since waking up Thursday that I can only dream of sleeping the pain and bathroom runs away.

Saturday I left for Mexico weighing 127.5lbs. I returned Wednesday night weighing 128.5lbs. I ran two mornings on the beach and horseback rode one evening during sunset. For the most part I ate a granola bar and banana for breakfast, chips and guacamole for lunch or nachos and then ate a salad, taco or fish platter for dinner. I am thrilled that I maintained on vacation... but am so unhappy to be sick.

Tonight I leave for Delaware. Rich graduates with his Master's Degree in Computer Science/Artificial Intelligence from the University of Delaware tomorrow morning. After graduation we drive down to the Outer Banks, NC.

I am worried about this week long vacation for several reasons. First, I am can only consume vitamin water and saltines. And with my stomach and intestines reacting so violently and spontaneously to food, liquids, ect... I don't know how I will survive it. I plan on buying my "foods" - aka granola bars, nuts, carrot sticks and hummus. But I know there will be a lot of drinking - which I don't want to get sucked in to. And although I will be there with Rich, there are 14 other people.... yes 14... who are not aware of my new lifestyle and who do not know me very well. The last thing I want is people making comments about my eating habits. Frown

Sorry for the rant...

So for my weigh-in:

  • wk 2 - 140.5
  • wk 3 - 138

I knew I couldn't take a bunch of equipment with me and running is something you can do anywhere all you really need is some good shoes and shorts and those fit well in a suit case. Don't even think twice about exercising on vacation and the whole I should relax thing, some folks (like me) find that exercise is something that helps them relax and enjoy the world around them more.

Perfect explanation belladonna - that is how I feel.

For me, when I am anxious, upset, angry or stressed out --- a good run helps me relax. It helps me clear my mind and forces me to focus on me: my running, my breathing, my form.

Listening to my feet hit the ground helps me escape. And there is nothing more that I would love than waking up in the morning to run along the beach (Mexico or anywhere else in the world). That is the only way anyone will ever get me up early. Put me near a beach, hand me my sneakers and MP3 player and I will be gone for hours.

ratinhat88 - you are WONDERFUL! Smile Thank you again X a million!

Hi ladies -  hope everyone is well!

So two weeks in a row of weighing in at 129lbs. I actually thought I would be up today, but I am not complaining. Now all I have to do is survive my 5 day vacation in Acapulco Mexico with some of my girlfriends.... I have a feeling half of my suitcase is going to be portion controlled baggies of peanuts, granola bars, and trail mix. LOL. Oh well. Whatever it takes to stay on track... only 4lbs away from my goal weight. AHH. SO close! I just want to be there already! Sorry... yes, I am losing patience.

Chattynoel - I am sorry to hear you are still not feeling better. If you have time, can you take a quiet and relaxing bubble bath and just light some candles and take a break from everything?! When things seem to be going wrong for me, I usually do this and it helps me relax and destress.

I know it seems empty in your house with Gidget gone, even with a lot of other pets and your two children. Try to take the time to play with the other pets more! Maybe that will help.

It was the same way for us after we had to put Bear (my rotti) asleep and we had a lot of animals too. So many times in the following months I would run downstairs to her bed totally forgetting she was no longer with us - or go out on the deck and just out of habit call her name and our other dog's name (Chloe). I am the same way with my cat Twiggy who I had since I was in 3rd grade. I came home from college break Senior year and she wasn't there... she had gotten sick and my parents had to put her asleep. I was devastated. To this day, 3 years later, I still slip up and call my new kitten "Twiggy." It is odd how this happens... I don't know if you will ever feel that the empty space is gone... but there may come a time when you may think about a new puppy to help fill that empty space.

Cantlose - OUCH! Bursitis is not fun... my mom had it for quite some time behind her right knee. It was horrible. It would swell up and fill with water. She was in so much pain she couldn't walk. Take care of yourself and do as the doctor says! Hopefully you will be back to your good ol self soon!

Good luck to everyone else - I hope you all have a wonderful sun-filled Memorial Day weekend! I'll let you know how I survived Mexico!

ratinhat88 - that's a great idea - thanks for the suggestion! Hopefully I will have the time to pull together a list. Though I am  worried I won't... Undecided At this point, I haven't packed yet, won't be able to tonight and have to work Friday/run last minute errands when I get home. I hope I still have the "all nighter" in me - because it seems that will be my Friday night - Saturday morning.

samesofam - good point. No,  I don't get to go often. The last time I was in Mexico was 7 years ago (Playa del Carmen, 1 hr. south of Cancun). I went with my family and stayed at an all-inclusive resort. We also rented a car, so it was much easier to get around.

The reason I am so concerned about getting off track in Mexico is because as soon as I get back from Mexico - within 2 days I will be going on another vacation!

For 1 week I will be staying at a beach house in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. There will be 16 of us staying there (all friends) and of the 16 - only 5 girls (we will be severely outnumbered). AHH! Which means: lots of beer, lots of junk food and of course - lots of fun. That is all fine and dandy - and I will be better able to control my meals and go food shopping for what I want to eat - but still.... 2 vacations back-to-back ----- its a recipe for disaster.

Also, I have been fighting these last 4 pesky pounds for what seems forever. I am the type of person that gets frustrated, discouraged and tends to give up after not seeing results or hitting a wall (aka plateau). I am right at that point now...

dinarly - glad you know the area!! My mom and I were looking at a map last night and trying to figure out where we could go to the markets, restaurants, bars, ect. (She and my dad went there for their honey moon 30 years ago... so doubtful things are the same.)

We are 5 minutes from the Acapulco airport... on the Pacific coast. Do you know if it will be easy to get around? Will we be able to get a taxi to the fresh fish markets? Or other places?

Here is the link to where we will be (letter B): http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en& ;geocode=&q=Mayan+Palace+Acapulco+Resort& amp;sll=16.774302,-99.787102&sspn=0.073468, 0.11673&ie=UTF8&filter=0&ll=16.79 8954,-99.814224&spn=0.073458,0.11673& z=13

(I take my own packets of light dressing on vacation, I'm picky about my dressing and want to make sure it isn't the full fat/cal stuff)

Where do you purchase packets of salad dressing from? I've seen them at Wawa... but no where else. And there is no Wawa near my house.

Thank you all for your responses!!!

I am going to Acapulco. My friend's parents have a timeshare so we are staying at this place called the Mayan Palace. Our room is a condo and comes with a full kitchen - which is great. I love to cook and apparently there is a local market that the resort has shuttle service to. So I should be able to go there and find plenty of fruits and veggies to eat.

After reading all your suggestions - it helped me realize that I can try to keep on track while there.

Foods ----

Cucumber slices with fresh lime and hot sauce - sounds delicious! I usually eat 1 sliced cucumber every other day - I just find them so refreshing and yummy. I eat them with laughing cow cheese or hummus. If this sliced cucumber and lime dish is common, I will be fine for snacking!

And I LOVE fruit - especially freshly sliced fruit. So eating that shouldn't be difficult at all. At buffets, that is usually the first thing I fill up on, then I look at my other options.

Shrimp cocktail and seafood - another one of my favorites! I have heard of ceviche... but I thought that was something made with eggs and baked in the oven.

Tequila - another one of my favorites. I definitely can enjoy it over ice and a squeeze of lemon.

Flyte - that is pretty smart of you to bring a calorie counter!! Unfortunately I don't have one - but I do plan on keeping a journal while there. Where did you get your calorie counter from?

For the most part I know the calories in fruits and veggies pretty well, same with grilled or roasted chicken. So I am fine estimating those items... but it would be nice to have a calorie counter in-hand. (I am not bringing my laptop because I have a feeling internet prices will be high and I can't access CC from my cell phone.)

Ratinhat88 - you are right about having a good idea of calories, but still - I don't eat Mexican food or similar foods on a daily basis so for me, it is unknown. On the other hand - pasta, salad, stir frys, ect - I eat those more frequently and from looking them up - it is all ingrained in my mind.

Exercise ----

The resort also has a gym and a 1.5 mile beach - so #1 priority in packing: sneakers and workout clothes! I know, I know... its vacation so I should relax, but if I can get up and go running on the beach early in the morning, that would be fantastic.

If this vacation is like our vacation to Myrtle Beach - we didnt do a lot of walking at all. When I am with my girlfriends, we all tend to get super lazy and just lay around relaxing. It is nice - especially since I am usually the hyperactive one who wants to go here, do this and run over there to do that. So they manage to get me to relax - and I have a very strong feeling we will be laying by the pool/on the beach all day, every day.

Now for night time excursions - if there are places near us to go out - then I am sure we will be dancing at bars.... but there still isn't anything quite like going for a run on the beach.

Bring lots of fruit - apples, bananas, oranges, ect. Don't forget to pack some granola bars/protein bars that will fill you up.  You can have these for breakfast. Or, pack some apple sauce cups.

If you need something more filling - why not bring a loaf of high fiber multi-grain bread and have a smear of peanut butter. They don't need to be kept cool.

Also, pick up some bags/containers of nuts/trail mix and portion them out into single serving ziploc bags.

If you want to snack - corn chips and salsa will go over well with everyone. Or, have salsa with celery and carrot sticks.

For grilling - eat the hot dogs/hamburgers without the bun.

Drinking - lots of water.

If their is alcohol - instead of beer, mix flavored vodka or rum with diet soda (sprite or coke).

Good luck! And have fun!

I go camping every sumer with a bunch of friends from college - this will be our 5th year. And it is like a non-stop party for 4 days. I always pack my "survival foods" as I call them (most of which are listed above). Sure, in the beginning I get a few comments, but hey - I still manage to enjoy the trip and not feel guilty about what I am eating because the foods I pack are familiar to me and part of my usual diet anyways.

Young Calorie Counters What do you do when you're with friends? May 16 2008

First off, think of it as a new life - NOT a diet.

Dieting comes to an end - and that's where people get off track. Because they reached their goal, the diet it over. And since the diet is over, they go back to old ways. And the wicked process starts all over again. Gain weight, diet. Lose weight, stop dieting. Slowly gain weight, start dieting. Lose weight, stop dieting.

You see... its a cycle. Thinking of your weight loss goals as a diet is not the right way to go about life.

You need to make healthy choices for the rest of your life.

My motto: everything in moderation. Wink

You will forever be faced with social gatherings, vacations, unplanned dinners eating out, too little time to cook, ect.

Like others said: plan ahead.

I always (and I mean ALWAYS) have a few handy snacks around that I know will help curb my cravings. I tried to downsize my purse but I can't because I always carry:

  • 1 bottle of water that I can refill
  • 1 granola bar (Quakers - peanut butter chocolate chip or strawberry vanilla)
  • pack of gum
  • portioned snack bag of peanuts or almonds
  • carrot sticks

Now, don't get me wrong. I'll have a few fries and a bite of a cheese steak ... but that's it. Then I'll reach for my carrot sticks and peanuts and happily chew on them because I know exactly how many calories they are and that they will fit in my daily allowance.

Slow down. Sometimes you will notice that just tasting a food is enough --- you don't need to necessarily fill up on it.

And if you really want to have some of the junk food - then be willing to cope with the consequences: you may have to sacrifice something later in the day, you may have to exercise  a little more, or you may find it just isn't worth it for you.

Try not to impulsively eat - instead take a look at your options. Think ahead to the rest of your day and ask yourself: is this worth it now to eat a bag of tostitos plus chips ahoy and an ice cream sundea? or... would I rather feel good about my decision and eat a healthy well rounded meal later tonight and have room for my dessert then -- perhaps even an ice cream sundae.

At every moment in life you are faced with making a decision... this is just one of them.

Chattynoel -  I am sorry to hear about your dog, I know what it is like. Frown I had to put my rotti asleep after having her for 15 years and I cried for the entire day, locked myself up in my room and refused to eat --- and this was just last year.

I don't think it ever gets easy, especially if you are like me and consider your pet a family member/best friend. Just think of the good times and the friendship you had with your dog - and when the time comes, and if you decided to get a new dog, keep in mind that there will never be a replacement for her - just a new loving pet to warm a new spot in your heart.

Re: your back - can you try a stationary bike with the seat that has a back support? I think they are called recumbent bikes  - my mom has one and she biked forever on it after her knee replacement surgery. If you bike hard/fast enough, I am sure you can get a good cardio workout.

Andip2u - schizophrenic scales - hahahhaha, I love it! Nice way to put it! Wink My scale is like that 1 week out of the month... hmmm.... wonder why? Lol.

Cantlose - just keep on plugging away! Wink You will reach your goal! Remember the longer it takes to lose it the longer it will take to ever put it back on - so its worth the battle. (Or so I keep telling myself - ha!)

fhtske - congrats on wrapping up the semester. I hope you will be able to find time for YOU now! And I so proud of you for having enough self control to throw away the fudge that was no longer good - you are incredibly strong willed! Laughing

lisseth83 - you are doing an awesome job!Smile And go you for taking the step to quit smoking, you deserve a gold star for that!!!

Since I wake up so early as it is... I prefer working out in the evening. I manage to eat atleast 1000 calories throughout the day, and typically have enough energy to get in a 20-40 minute jog/run on the treadmill. I tried working out in the mornings, but waking up at 5AM to get on a treadmill just didn't sit well with my body --- I felt sick to my stomach and was falling asleep by 3pm. I would try one week of morning exercising and one week of evening exercising and see which you prefer - everyone is different!

OK - and now for my weigh-in:

  • sw - 140
  • wk 1 - 139
  • wk 2 - 140.5
  • wk 3 - 138
  • wk 3.5 - 135.5
  • wk 4 - 138
  • wk 5 - 136
  • wk 6 - 135.5
  • wk 7 - 133.5
  • wk 8 - 132
  • wk 9 - 134
  • wk 9.5 - 132
  • wk 10 - 133
  • wk 11 - 130
  • wk 12 - 130
  • wk 13 - 131.5
  • wk 14 - 129

Now that's the number I wanted to see!!! PMS is over and I am 4lbs away from my goal. Once I reach it, I am strongly considering setting a new goal of 115. Surprised Do you think I can do it?

My weight loss seems to have slowed down a lot --- and thanks to my toe being infected AGAIN, I can't run for a week. UGH.

What do you think is happening? I know my daily deficit isn't much, around 300 calories.... but man o man... I just want to see 125lbs on the scale.

I'm trying really hard not to go over 1400 calories at all... and I am thinking of eating at 1300 for the next week since I can't run. Barefoot tae bo is not easy -- you slide all over the carpet.

And on a side note: I am addicted, or have the potential to be, to running races. Sunday's was so amazing. I have been searching the web like crazy for races anywhere in DE, PA, NJ and NY. Since I am in one of those states on any given weekend, I should be able to find time to race more!

I might even get my parents to walk a race on Father's Day while I run it -- hehe, round 2 of attempting to get them (more my mom than my dad) to be active.

OK -  sorry for the super long post ... have a great weekend everyone! Let's keep our fingers crossed for some REAL Spring weather!

Original Post by ser25:

Next weekend there is a race and I can't decide whether to sign up for the 5k or 10k. Do stragglers annoy other runners/event organisers?

Congrats risza!

I just ran my first race ever this weekend, it was the Susan G. Komen Philadelphia 5K Race for the Cure. I was expecting to run a 10 minute mile, so when I lined up in the starting line, I wasn't up front but not in the back either - somewhere right in the middle. I actually completed the 5k in 29:20 - a lot better than I had hoped for.

Ser25 -

I noticed that in the beginning right when the race starts, it takes time for the faster runners and slower runners to fall into place - especially if you weren't in the right starting area in the beginning.

To give you an idea how the first mile was - it took me 10:41 to complete it, but by the second mile, I was only at 19:18. So the beginning is a lot of dodging people as the crowd thins out: faster runners ahead slower runners dropping back.

As long as you can finish the 10k within the time frame given, I would say you should go for it! Also, if you think you will be slower, then when you line up, stay more towards the back of the pack - that way you won't be caught up in the initial mad dash that everyone tries to make. I think being too far forward is dangerous. And yes, it can also be difficult for faster runners to maneuver around people who are too far forward and at a slower speed.

Health & Support IBS? May 13 2008

I also have IBS and stress definitely triggers it - oddly enough, my reactions go both ways too.

One thing I recently noticed, I had to stop drinking caffeine due to antibiotics I was on. Well, I got used to not drinking coffee or tea and then last Friday, decided I needed to have a cup because I was literally falling asleep at work. All that week I had felt bloated and full and was all backed up - after drinking that one cup of coffee Friday afternoon, everything was cleaned out. Unfortunately though, for the next day my stomach/intestines were in overdrive - so everything I ate literally went right through me.

I have to say, it is a very careful balancing act with IBS - and it is difficult to pin point exactly what causes it and why some days you cant go and other days you cant stop. I hate the inconvience it is... not only to me, but the people I am with. It is horrible to have to constantly know where a bathroom is at all times - and even worse when there is a line.

I was tested for Chron's disease when I first started showing signs of it - unable to keep anything in me, drastic weight loss, fatigue, fainting, crippling stomach pains that landed me in the hospital. The test came back negative and the doctors concluded I had a severe case of IBS.

They gave me these little white pills to take- they worked pretty well and I took them for a few months. My doctor also told me to stop eating high fiber foods since my digestive system was processing everything too quickly - instead she told me to stick with carbs. I also did that for 3 months - but then I started getting sicker again. It turned out I had acquired an intolerance to gluten so I had to cut that out of my diet.

It has been an up-and-down hill battle figuring out what exactly I can and can't eat - and it changes all the time. I can now eat gluten products - but can't have too  much in a day. Dairy (in large quantities) triggers me too - but I do make sure I have a yogurt every day.

When I get blocked up, the scale shows it.

My mom always said prunes would do the job - have you tried them?

Sexual harassment can happen guy to girl, girl to guy, guy to guy, and girl to girl. This particular situation could be sexual harassment, but it is definitely harassment in general. The harassment you are receiving is resulting in a hostile work environment.

Pulled from my workshop materials:

What constitutes harassment?

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) definitions include: unwelcome verbal or physical conduct based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or retaliation when:

  • the conduct is sufficiently severe or pervasive to create a hostile work environment or;
  • a supervisor's harassing conduct results in a tangible change in an employee's employment status or benefits (for example, demotion, termination, failure to promote, ect.)

The situation matches the first bullet - you feel uncomfortable. That is because the women are creating what you feel like is a hostile work environment. This is what you initially said in your post:

"They are like staring at me and looking at me up and down in a really uncomforatable way.  When i walk by them they woo at me, like as if i'm walking by those construction workers who holler at women walking by.  Its so weird!!!! I hate it and it makes me so mad when i'm at work and mind you very uncomfortable when i'm walking by them (they all work in the same area and I cant take a detour either).  Wherever I see them they are looking at me so strangely and making good comments, but in a way it makes me feel gross."

More info pulled from my workshop materials:

Consider this:

  • whether or not something constitutes harassment or not, it will be considered, in part, on the perspective of the person on the receiving end

(This would be you, your perspective, which you state, it makes you feel gross.)

Hostile work environment:

  • Unwelcome comments or conducts based on sex, race or other legally protected characteristics that interferes with an employee's work performance or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment

(You said you can't take a detour past them because they work in the same area - but if you could, you would avoid them -- you shouldn't have to feel like you need to avoid them - work is a public place, everyone needs to be respected.)

Examples of sexual harassment:

  • leering (i.e., staring in a sexually suggestive manner)
  • making offensive remarks about looks, clothing, body parts
  • touching in a way that makes an employee feel uncomfortable, such as patting, pinching, or intentionally brushing against another's body
  • telling sexual or lewd jokes
  • sending, forwarding or soliciting sexually suggestive letters, notes, emails or images

I would take a look through your company employee conduct handbook if you have one, and see if you can find information out on your company's policy.

First, approach the women, tell them that you do not appreciate their comments and that their behavior is unwelcomed. Ask them to please stop. If it continues, go to your manager/supervisor and contact HR.

You should, by no means, feel uncomfortable and gross at work. That is not fair to you!

If the ladies at your work are bothering you that much with their "wowows" then you need to say something. Even if it's going to cause a little awkwardness between you and them for a while, you still need to say something. The next time you're walking by them and after they make their comments you can say something like "hey, didn't you ladies get the sexual harassment memo,

Very very true... we just had a harassment workshop at work, learning about what harassment can be, hostile work environments, ect. What they are doing is not correct - and needs to be addressed. If you do approach them about it and nothing changes, I would discuss the situation with a manager and also bring it to the attention of HR. It may be a good time for your company to consider doing a harassment workshop --- there is so much stuff that people may not be aware of that constitutes sexual harassment.

Wow, go you losers! SO proud of everyone for keeping up the good work.

For me, I knew today wasn't going to be a nice day to me...

  • sw - 140
  • wk 1 - 139
  • wk 2 - 140.5
  • wk 3 - 138
  • wk 3.5 - 135.5

  • wk 10 - 133
  • wk 11 - 130
  • wk 12 - 130
  • wk 13 - 131.5

All this week the scale has been jumping all over the place. Over the past week, I have gone from 129lbs all the way up to 131.5lbs today.

It is TTOM and I am definitely PMS-ing. You name it - I am feeling it. Cramps? Moodiness? Fatigue? Check. Check. Check. I couldn't even bare to look in the mirror this morning. I felt like a big fat blob. ICK. Hopefully come Wednesday next week (when I actually get it) the scale will go back down to where it should be - 129!

I have tried to keep up with exercise, even last weekend - ran every day, even on my day off. I ran an 8:21 mile on Friday, ran 20 minutes at a moderate pace on Saturday, and ran 3.22 miles in 31:50 on Sunday. I ran a few times this week, but nothing too strenuous since I have the 5K race on Sunday. I would really like to complete it in under 30 minutes, but I just dont think I have it in me. I am such a slow runner.

It's looking like I won't reach my goal weight before Mexico in 15 days... not good. Especially since I am going from one 5 day vacation, to a 2 day break, and then onto another 7 day vacation in NC. I made my friend promise she will pack running shoes and run with me in Mexico - now I just have to keep that promise to myself too.
