i just saw this group and i fit right into it.  i eat really healthy in general but can't stop eating when i'm satisfied, or even when i'm full... and then i feel so sick.  ugggh.  i already won't let myself buy a tub of icecream or a pie from the store...i'd eat it until it is gone.   i need to change my habits and i think that joining this group will help.  :)  i can't lose ANY weight because of my overeating.  the one night i had to stop eating at 7 pm (fasting for blood work the next morning) I went to bed a bit hungry and woke up lighter!  i wish i could do this everynight, but i always eat right up until i go to bed.    i actually dreamt about food that night too.  i think i'm obsessed.  'get in maaaa belly!' should be the quote that describes me with food.  :(

i was losing alot of my hair too. :(  it took a few months for it to stop falling out.  that's actually one of the main reasons why i started to eat normally again...i looove my hair.

i think biotin is very important, as well as eating enough and getting enough nutrients in general.  luna bars (180 cals, 10 g protein), have alot of biotin in them, as well as other essential nutrients.  oh also, faxseed oil or other things with omega-3's (like fish, which i don't eat) is great for your hair.   when it was happening to me i was so worried.  i'd say i lost at least 1/3 of my thick hair.  but don't worry...it'll stop falling out and it will grow back and one day you'll be like, hey...my hair is thick again!!

i think you are doing great.  i eat soysausage and/or a veggie burger once a day...

also, since you are gone all day, make your lunch the night before.  i get home at 9 pm. and make a big salad and pack two oranges or apples to bring to work the next day.  when i'm at the rock gym, if i'm really hungry i'll eat a luna bar (cliff and luna are vegan, luna is 180 cals with 10g of protein).  then dinner for me is some form of soy protein.  last night i had half a sweet potato (made fries with it), some soy sausage and one chopped up onion.    i think veggie meats are a great way to get protein.

one of my friends told me about carrot fries.  take carrots and cut them up, put seasonings on them (old bay is good), spray pan and carrots briefly with oil and stick in a 375 degree preheated oven for about 35 minutes until they are tender and don't taste too carroty.  they are amazing with ketchup, and i believe that 3 large carrots chopped up is about 90 calories.  very filling!

i run with a 'camel back'. its a lightweight pack that has straps like a back pack that only carries water and has a small tube that hangs over your shoulder so while you are running you bite/suck on the mouthpiece to get hydrated. It also has a zipper dept for keys and a cell. it really isn't heavy and it holds at least four cups of water. Sporting goods stores sell them. i can't run without water and carrying a water bottle throws me off balance.

i agree that the smell of meat makes me nausceous. In the summer i'll be jogging in my parents neighborhood and smell the sweet smells of meat being cooked in a bbq and think, "that is the smell of flesh being cooked..." I think about how the animal died, and the life it lived beforehand. i lessen my breathing while running bc the smell and my thoughts that go along with it are disgusting.

i broke up w/ my bf when i was out visiting him in Colorado. We were staying at his friends house, and i was stuck there for three more days with him before my plane left. it was too expensive to switch the flight, so i was stuck with three days of emotional hell. i lost my appetite, and there was nothing to eat except for like two cliff bars and a few brownies that i had brought with me for him. i lived off of that primarily... i was in survival mode...across the country in a different state and on my own (although we continued to stay in the friend's house and he said he would drop me off at the airport when the time came.) that was my trip from hell. it was meant to be a break from work and to visit him while he was on his roadtrip, and it turned out to be me stuck there, being told the most horrible things for the next three days and not being able to escape from it. :( i'll never forget it...and although i'm scarred from it, it has made me stronger.

this isn't new news.  Hormones are in the water from women taking birth control, peeing and flushing, and the sewage treatment plant unable to filter that out then it is released into rivers and streams.  same with any pills you put in your body.  it winds up in the water.  unfortunately, it's affecting the sex of frogs and fish and their abilities to reproduce.  :(

i jogged twice this week (9.5 miles total)on top of my normal workout schedule. even though the scale isn't reflecting the difference, i feel like i look a bit better, and my jeans are a bit looser. i can't wait for more fifty and sixty degree days! once the weather warms up i'll be able to jog and bike ride and i think then with getting out i won't have a problem losing some weight. :)

i know what you guys mean by the elitist label. being a vegan has status and it's own culture. i was strict vegan for 2.5 years but then when i started cheating and eating birthday cake and a bit of icecream, i felt immense guilt and after a few months i decided that i couldn't label myself as a vegan anymore, i was only being a hypocrite and calling myself something i wasn't. so i backed my label down to just vegetarian, even though i still don't eat eggs, or drink milk, and only consume them in trace amounts in baked goods at a party (i still bake and cook vegan). it was difficult to change my label. and yea i know labels are silly but it's sort of like a status, lol. after about a year and a half i'm working myself back to being a full vegan again. not for the label though, lol, but because i want to be healthier and it'd be nice to show some self control. it'd be great for my diet. no more doritos or creme puffs at a party for me!!
Foods Gelatin/ Kosher Gelatin. Mar 05 2008

that's what i figured.  and that will be my main motivating fact in giving up yogurt.  i like yogurt, but not what is in it.  the lower cal, fat free ones have high fructose corn syrup, gelatin, and vit. D3 (derived from animals).  maybe i'll switch over to the less tasty soy yogurts or soy kelfir (i think they make that vegan...)

thanks for your response, dm84  :)

Err... How can gelatin be kosher? If it is, I'll try it! : P

If there is a Jewish food section in your supermarket, look there.  You'll find kosher "gelatin" usually containing agar agar, a seaweed product, to make it gel.

If we object to regular gelatin, then all we have to do is read our food labels and avoid those that contain this ingredient.  No need to have hysterics over it.

i wonder if the 'kosher geletin' found on the back of yogurt labels is made of agar agar?

what about trying morningstar chikin patties? you can make chicken parm that way...add some tomato sauce and cheese to the top. are you eating fake meats at all? i'm 25 and have been veg since 14...and i don't ever crave meat since i gave it up even though i used to love it and found it quite tasty.

lol, just watch meet your meat again and the craving just might go away. but if you do know a free range farm that raises chickens or are willing to buy organic free range chicken then at least you are eating an animal that had a good life... that's what i would do, so it makes it better morally, but personally, the idea of chewing up actual muscle tissue from a once living being disgusts me... lol. sorry about that - i phrased that rather grossly. :P

when i became vegan pasta was like all i ate.  i would make rotatini with tomato sauce, veggies, and tofu mixed in.  it was delicious but i would be hungry like 20 minutes later.  pasta doesn't really fill me up for long.  Now i avoid it, and i avoid bread and my cravings for all that stuff have disappeared.  i still eat pizza once in a while, and i'm working on my sweet tooth.  i think i might be hypoglycemic so i want to start eating even morrre veggies and avoid eating my darn delicious vegan baked goods.  i'm sure the craving will go away eventually.  lately i've been craving vegan cheesecake. oh yummm.  :P  luckily luna bars are low glycemic and taste like dessert.  :)

lol, speaking of high calorie dressing...my boss (who is weird to begin with) cuts up an apple and slathers on about half a cup of ranch dressing....that stuff is like 140 cals for two tbs!!!  i don't see how it would taste good.  i really like weird food combinations  and making up new combos...but ranch on top of an apple turns my stomach.  what a great way to turn a healthy snack into like 400 cals.  lol.

I'm going to get the book.  i've been a semi veg for 11 years, a full veg for 5, and i was a strict vegan for 2.5 years then i slowly started to eat a bit of dairy/eggs in birthday cakes and icecream.  when i bake or cook, i cook vegan except for the evil sugar free jello pudding that i make sometimes and the yogurt (tasty unfortunately) or cottage cheese (as a diet food - it grosses me out otherwise) that i buy.  i think this book will motivate me to give up splenda, yogurt, and cheese and become healthier and a real vegan again.

i saw that video as well as many others in college.  I cried alot and i went from semi vegetarian (ony eating chicken and fish- for about 6 years) to a full vegetararian, and then a strict vegan in about a month.  It's horrible how those animals are raised and treated.  They aren't treated like they can feel pain and are a living creature.  there are alot of good websites on the internet that can help you figure out what to eat.

when i first became a vegan, the first two weeks at the school caf i didn't know what to eat.  i finally discovered i could make a tasty salad topped with chickpeas and oil and vinegar dressing.  But going vegetarian is a bit easier than vegetarian.  you can still eat cheese and drink milk afterall.  it's easy to omit the meat from your diet and there are tons of recipes online.  just type in "vegetarian chilli" or whatever you want and many recipes will come up.  before becoming vegan, i never really ate fruits and veggies.  i just ate  mashed potatoes and dessert at college - it was horrible for my health.  then when i became vegan with no kitchen to make the recipes myself, it was tough.  i now eat apples and oranges everyday, sometimes strawberries, for snacks, for lunch a big salad (using romaine or green leaf lettuce, iceburg has no nutritional value).  on the salad i sometimes put raw tofu (it takes on the taste of the dressing), mushrooms, carrots...   dinner is a bunch of stuff.  last night i made carrot fries.  just preheat oven to 350, cut carrots into wedges and spray with a bit of oil, and put seasonings on top.  cook for at least half an hr, till they are soft.  really good in ketchup!!  i also made roasted red pepper by chopping up a pepper, spraying with a bit of oil, and sticking it in the oven for about 45 minutes.  it was really good, and normally i'm not that crazy about peppers.

anyways, major kudos to you for trying out the vegetarian thing.  vegetarians save 96 lives a year!!  :)   just take it one day at a time, continue to do research online, and you'll discover new recipes, more facts to keep you motivated, and develop more of a liking for vegetables (i know i did!).  you'll find the right aisles in the grocery stores and vegetarianism will become second nature eventually.

:)
