The bullet is excellent for Salsa I agree.  I grew my own salsa in the garden last year lol and I loved bringing in all the fresh ingredients that I picked and throwing them straight in there.  We lived on Salsa during the summer - yumm and very low cal and good for you so long as you go easy on the chips :) I can eat it on anything.

I also use the bullet to make our own baby food - we puree the food, put it in ice cube trays to freeze it then store the little baby food cubes in ziplocs.  In the morning I can just pop out what I need and let it thaw or microwave it a few seconds and it's fast, convenient, super healthy baby food for cheap :)

I believe to some extent this may be true, but I also think it has a lot to do with the confidence level of the person.  when I was very overweight I felt dumpy and like a wallflower so I projected that energy and what you put out you attract.  Once I lost the weight I felt confidence and that showed I think and therefore people were friendlier with me.  I never have worn a lot of makeup or anything like that and when I go out I wear average clothes I don't go all out trying to glam up or anything - neither heavy nor thin so I think a lot of how you are treated is how you project yourself.  I had an overweight friend in high school who was always being flirted with and people were friendly with her because she had an incredibly high level of self-confidence and she was very outgoing and beautiful (despite the weight issue).. I think part of the problem is we associate our weight as a direct link to how attractive we are and therefore when we are heavy we feel less attractive etc.

Not saying that beautiful people don't get some more attention or whatever, but I'd rather have positive attention for my brains than stares at my breasts etc any day.

So just because people believe in something that is alternative they should be banned?  Great way to learn from the experience of others.

Also not all of us are so stupid that we have the "placebo effect" taking place when we are on the cleanses.  Cleansing the body through fasting is done in MANY cultures - not just the master cleanse.  Fasting  gives the digestive system a break and  can be  good for you when done properly for a FEW days at a time - not weeks..

However this program and fasting in general i might add should NOT be done for weight loss - that's not what it is intended for.

I swear why do people have to be hostile about things they don't understand and try to shut people up?  I don't understand that - you can't learn if you censor those who don't think inside your little box.

I get migraines around the time of my period and I never did this until the last year.  I think the pill I'm on may be contributing to that but until I can afford an IUD the pill it is ...

Also I used to get them from aspartame and most recently baking blend splenda has started to trigger them :(  I was having them almost daily for two weeks last month and was thinking what the heck?? no period no normal triggers etc.  and then I looked over my food logs and I had been eating oatmeal for breakfast every single day and I always put splenda brown sugar in it to cut calories.... well apparently that was the culprit because I promptly removed it from my diet and voila no migraines..

hope you figure it out

Health & Support Another question about asthma May 03 2007

be very very very careful with Advair.  I had a severe reaction to it out of the blue when they put me on it.  Before that I had managed my asthma just fine without it and only an albuterol inhaler.  I had a "spring allergy attack" and so they decided it was a good idea to put me on Advair without really telling me all the potential pitfalls of it.   Silly me I trusted blindly without question and allowed them to put me on it.

Fast forward to last december and I almost died from it.   It turns out Advair has a black box warning on it from the FDA and should only be used as a drug of last resort if all other treatments for your asthma have failed.   It has "rare but serious" side effects that have been fatal in enough people to warrant the FDA's highest warning.  It cost me 6 days in the hospital, unreasonable medical bills, and about a 2 full month recovery.  Because they had to put me on massive massive amounts of steroids to save my life it has also caused me permanent memory loss and a lot of other fun side effects like arthritis from coming off the many thousands of milligrams of prednisone.

Unfortunately many doctors don't stay on top of these warnings and you need to do your own homework and not just trust what you are told.  If you asthma is not severe you may not need to be on Advair, do research and then share your research with your doctor.

Im not trying to scare you or anything but do read about the perils of Advair...

As for me, I do tend to use my albuterol inhaler about 20 minutes or so before any strenuous exercise and also drink a lot of water before and after :) It helps.

Well I did reach my goal weight, but for my height my goal weight or 120 still left me a little curvy and I prefer it.  I think the fact that I feel good and have worked out and gotten strong is what makes me sexy - not the number on the scale so much.

That being said when I was heavier I felt bad so I didn't have the beauty that comes from being healthy... I also had lower self-esteem then as well.

I think the confidence I gained as I dropped the pounds is what made me more attractive.  Before I didn't really walk with my head held high or have that energy I have now.  Healthy men and/or women have a certain "energy" about them a glow to the skin clear skin/eyes shiny hair all of those things that say "healthy"  I think there are women who are bigger who look much healthier and sexier than their skinny counterparts... and there are women who are very muscular and trim and you can tell they work hard for their health and they are also very attractive... I think its all in the health and the confidence.

If I got rail thin and down to 105 I don't personally think I'd feel as sexy because to me it's the curve of the hips and the womanly shape that feels sexy.  I also think my new muscles make me kinda hot :D My boyfriend agrees with me he teases me about getting stronger than him lol.

I like having some curves, now my main goal is to keep getting stronger and healthier :) and with that hopefully even hotter ;) .

Weight Loss Extreme Dieting and why it doesn't work Apr 25 2007

rj there are many reasons why eating a large amount once a day is not healthy.  First of all the metabolism works better when given a steady amount of nutrients over the course of the day.  Secondly eating only once a day can cause havoc with blood insulin levels and cause problems with bloodsugar.  Also the body only absorbs and properly uses so many calories at a time and meals over I believe it is 700 or 800 calories (I'll have to look it up) are not processed properly or fully by the body and that can lead to excess being stored as fat.

HK is passionate (as many of us are) about doing things in a healthy manner that is GOOD for the body and lends itself to long term health.  What you are doing may cause you to lose weight for awhile, but I am quite certain it is not good for your body.  Many other sources/studies will tell you that eating once a day is not recommended - look it up.

runnin - it seems to me and Im sorry if this sounds rude but a lack of maturity and accountability on your part.  You won't sit down and be honest with your wife because it isn't "easy" enough?

Marriage isn't easy - it's a lifetime commitment and if you can't be honest and communicate with each other then therein lies the real problem.  Sneaking things just because it's easier? that sounds like something we do when we are children - sneaking a cookie before dinner.

I think what your wife is doing is perfectly acceptable so long as she isn't trying to force it on you.  Just cooking healthy if she is the one responsible for the cooking isn't forcing it on you.  If you want to eat crap cook it yourself - don't expect her to give up her diet to make you what you want.

There's nothing wrong with eating healthy to please her just as she should let you get your mcburger or whatever if it truly pleases you.  Compromise, equality... you get the idea.

Im sorry but the posts you have made make me think that the challenges in this marriage are more about your comfort and insecurity than they are about her changing to healthier eating.

For some people there are just "nono" foods.  I cannot bring ice cream into my home - I will eat the whole pint.  Waht I do is go out for a bit of ice cream once in awhile.

Whatever your trigger food is keep it out of your house.  If you can't do moderation then you can't do it... at least maybe not for now.  I have some things I can do in moderation and others like the aforementioned ice cream are deal breakers and I know this so I don't buy them.. simple as that.

I used ephedra for YEARS as a very effective asthma treatment - which is what it was originally intended for.  When taken in correct doses it is not only effective but also safe.  Because people chose to abuse it for the wrong reasons, taking way much more than the recommended dosages,  it was yanked off the shelves, declared "dangerous" and deemed not appropriate to be sold for any purpose.

If I purposely overdosed on Cold medicine that would make it dangerous too... should the FDA come in and ban the sale of all cold medicine ?? Yes it should be enforced that it be marketed only for appropriate purposes and in a safe amount...I can get behind that, but I don't like FDA or any other form of "big brother" telling me what I can and cannot put in my body.  Obviously the pharmaceutical asthma drug that almost killed me hasn't been banned even though the FDA has issued black box warnings on it in recent years.  It does kill people using it in the correct dosages for the correct purpose.  Why is it still available?

I think there is much Hypocricy when it comes to the FDA and regulations.  If its an herb ban it and fear monger it and make a big smear campaign about it but when a widely advertised asthma drug also kills people keep it on the market and just put a little text box on it .... ridiculous double standard IMO.   Proof also in my eyes that big business can get away with pretty much anything and unfortunately here in the US medicine and health has become about the bottom line more than it has been about helping people.

Does anyone ever wonder why we have so many symptom chasing drugs and never any new cures??? Take this pill for the rest of your life .... and line the pockets of the pharmaceutical companies.  It's not in their best financial interests to "cure" anyone, but to keep people chronically ill and on medications.  It would also be in their financial interests to gain control over the herbs/supplements through fear tactics - it's the easiest way to get people to give up their rights and not fight it.

Actually over in Europe they had some challenges when the EU put really tough restrictions in place something called "CODEX"  I have to look up the information again but yes, the pharmaceuticals would love nothing more than to see people only have them for options.  It is disheartening.  When I worked at the nutrition center there were always notices coming in about things of this nature and who to petition and what to say to your representatives.

Here are some other good resources to help you stay informed and protect your rights as a consumer to make your own choices.

I think there is a fine line and you can dress sexy without revealing so much flesh.  I agree with some other posters that the skimpiness of the outfit is more a distraction and detracts from your actual real physical beauty. Im sorry sweetie you're beautiful but that dress is a bit much... if it was a few inches longer though perhaps ;) it would be great on you.  I admire a girl who will wear white lol for me its a magnet for spilled drinks or other stains :) Hope you have fun regardless.

For a good multi-vitamin I suggest avoiding things like the one a day and centrums and going to a nutrition center for a good "whole foods vitamin" The reason being as that they tend to come from more natural sources and also are made to be better absorbed by the body.  They do cost a little more but are much more potent and effective than regular vitamins and are a good investment.  Of course a one a day or centrum etc are better than no vitamin at all

Omega 3's in the form of fish oil supplements or flax supplements are also highly recommended.  These are the "heart healthy" fats and their have been some studies that suggest that they also help the body release the stores of the bad fats around the heart.

There are others as well depending on your body type and any other issues you may have.  I take a b complex to help regulate my metabolism and help me deal with the ups/downs of hypoglycemia and it seems to work well for me.  It also gives you more sustained energy over time - not like a caffeine jolt

Um, if you have heart disease history in your family or just want to lower cholesterol things like that you can do garlic, vitamin e, co-q10, apple cider vinegar (which also helps with digestive issues like heartburn and reflux and stuff to)

There are lots of things really.  I recommend a book called the prescription for natural healing - it is a huge reference book that lists all sorts of conditions and the best vitamins/supplements to take for those conditions ranked by importance :)
Foods Anyone have certain food addictions...need help? Apr 13 2007

Recognize certain trigger foods and simply do not purchase them and have them in the home.  My weakness is ice cream therefore I do not allow any form of it to come into my house.... I eat it out once in awhile.  such a shame too because I adore ben and jerry's lol but if I bring home a pint it's 1200 calories! OUCH so I don't do it.

As for butter spray splenda and the like chances are you are craving "flavor" more than the butter spray etc. so try doing something like growing some herbs which you can clip fresh and add to your foods - very yummy and keeps things interesting and different.

Eat a little bit several times a day.  This reprograms your body/mind to want less food over time.

Binges can also tend to be emotionally triggered by boredom, stress, anger, and the like.  Take up other activities that help you manage this: meditation, journaling, exercise, knitting, anything that keeps your mind/hands occupied is a good start :)

I've followed a lot of this thread with the usual warriness.  I am an agnostic/spiritualist type living in the heart of bible land.  I find it offensive when my son comes home from a public school talking about Jesus and christianity which we do not follow.

While I respect anyones right to worship/believe in what they want, I wish the same respect and courtesy would be extended to those of us who don't.  It seems in my experience people believe that because the majority of said town or whatever is Christian that those of us who aren't should just suck it up and deal with it.

I believe profoundly in the separation of church and state.  I also believe people in general should spend more time focusing on our common humanity and building each other up.

I will believe in "one true god" and "one true religion" when I hear a church (or synagoge or temple or whatever) leader stand up and proclaim from on high that theirs is the wrong one lol

In other words to each their own.  No one should assume they have all the answers or know everything - it leads to narrow minds and closed hearts.

Peace to all of you no matter who/what you do or don't believe in :)

Welcome :)
Your goal sounds reasonable to me, do keep in mind that you may lose more at first and then level off some so that is more of an average than an exact two pounds a week :).

Eating several times a day is good for the metabolism and helps keep your blood sugar levels on an even keel so that you avoid insulin spikes/crashes (which trigger overeating)

Eat plenty of good carbohydrates and avoid refinded things like white flour, rice etc.  Whole grain breads, cereals etc. are better choices and help the weight come off (at least that did for me)

Increasing your fiber to 25g or more per day and drinking a lot of water also helps in weight loss and gives you good heart health and lower cholesterol to boot.

Welcome to CC and good luck :)
Weight Loss To Carb Or Not To Carb ... That Is The Question Apr 13 2007

the human body NEEDS carbohydrates - they are not evil.  Refined carbs are the "bad carbs" and you should avoid refined (ie white anything rice, bread, flour, sugar)

Good carbs are fruits, whole grains, certain veggies and are an important part of a healthy, low fat high fiber diet.... Eat your carbs! Just eat the right ones :)
Weight Loss anyone cleanse? Apr 12 2007

I forgot to add, I did my last cleanse/fast after having a galbladder attack over a year ago.  I had decided eating chinese food was a good idea lol ;) apparently not it put me on the floor.  I had had other similar periodic bouts with galbladder issues as well previously.

I didnt' want to have to elect for surgery unless absolutely necessary, and docs are pretty quick to do surgeries without exhausting all other options because they don't want to get sued...understandable, but still I wanted to try an alternative.

so I did some research and used a fast with organic apple juice, lemon juice, and olive oil and certain herbs I made teas out of  - it's a pretty major production I won't go into all of it here... but it did in fact help me soften then flush the stone out of the galbladder and after that I have eaten properly for my body and have not had a recurrence.  That's just one example of the proper use of a cleanse/fast... by getting proper nutrition through the juices/supplements and not adding more solid foods to an already taxed system I was better able to facilitate my body in ridding itself of the stone...

Did I lose weight? Yeah because I was sick as a dog with a galstone... cleanses are not and were never meant for weight loss! :)

Weight Loss anyone cleanse? Apr 12 2007

Cleansing and fasting is very popular in other cultures and can be used effectively as a healing tool for the body.  Master cleanse has been around since the 1970's. It is just now finding some popularity, but it isn't just a temporary "catch phrase" cleansing and giving the digestive system a break is practiced widely.  BUT it is NOT intended to be used for weight loss.

As for something being sold to cash in - my pharmaceutical inhaler costs 185 bucks a month... it's a cash cow too but it does help. Only pharmaceuticals and FDA  approved places are allowed to make money?  ...and everything the FDA  puts through is totally safe too... yeah right... sorry no disrespect but there  seems to be  an all out hostility on these forums regarding alternative health  issues/techniques  and I really don't get why that is.  We should all be able to make up our own mind without people bashing something they likely haven't tried for themselves.

I have done cleanses and fasts before safely and effectively - but you need to educate yourself on WHAT you are doing and why.  Most cleanses sold as pills are not that effective so its important to research it.  You can't just stop eating and drinking and such and start up again. It should be done with the proper mindset and expectations.

When I worked at the nutrition center many people were successful in clearing up issues with the Master cleanse but most only did a couple of days to give the digestive system a break.  Some people with a lot of toxicity and health issues went longer and felt MUCH better afterwards.   We also talked to people doing it about healthy diets and supplementing based on their individual issues/needs for after their cleanse.  Detoxing is not going ot hurt you if you consult a nutritionist or someone who works in a healthfood store who knows what they are doing.  Like anything else, don't abuse the system use in moderation for the correct purposes.

Most importantly, talk to someone who has actually used them and get their opinion.

You must go to the doctor insurance or not.  It could be possibly taken care of early or it could end up being something benign like a cyst and you will have your fears relieved.

I know the pain of not having insurance believe me.  I went through it with a giant hospital bill this past december and I am still trying to get the state to help me out a bit as I am self-employed.  It's a struggle but I also know that medical debt is one of the easier ones to get out from under.  Most hospitals and such do work with you on payment plans and most have a system in place where they forgive so many bills a year as a tax write off and stuff like that.

Not sure what state you live in or what your circumstances are but there may be some help available to you.  Also most communities have medical clinics and stuff that are less expensive but if you fear it could be something as severe as cancer you need to go to the doctor not sit around and wait and hope it goes away.  Please go have this looked at.  An ER is not allowed to refuse you service regardless and I'm sure you can find a doctor who will take you self-pay as well.

Please read about the serious side-effects of prednisone.  I was given massive doses of it the hospital this past december to save me from an asthma attack I had as a result of another drug interaction.  Weight gain is the least of the problems associated with the use of Prednisone and it surprises me that doctors use it for arthritis when one of the sideeffects of coming off of it is arthritis.  Prednisone was never intended to be a drug you should stay on indefinitely and this baffles me.  Please do some research on it.

I have arthritis in my joints now because Im coming off that crap.  It is a necessary evil sometimes but if you can avoid taking it and use another alternative I would suggest you consult the doctor with your findings and do so.

As for weight gain, I did not gain weight on it because I continued to eat right through my recovery.

are you exercising? are you eating at regularly spaced intervals? You have to change your routine to keep your body guessing and get things moving again.  Trust me I was the queen of long plateaus there for awhile lol.

Find an activity or two that you love that makes you more active everyday.  Do not sit for extended periods without getting some movement in there... being more active raises the metabolism.  Also if you don't do it already consider a bit of strength training, more muscle also boosts the metabolism.  You can try increasing your calories to maintenance level for a couple of days (carefully monitoring the quality of food - don't eat junk) and then drop it back down that may help as well as getting some exercise while you are doing this.

for a long time I used food as an emotional crutch as well.  Food can be an addiction and unlike things like alcohol you can't just stop feeding yourself.  That's why its important to look for another tool to help you explore and deal with your emotions.  Food doesn't truly bury them, although eating to deal with pain is a form of avoidance.  I've found in life though that as hard as we work to avoid pain, our avoidance usually ends up hurting us more.  Sometimes its just best (and easier ultimately) to just deal with your actual feelings as you are having them.

Write in a journal, join a support group, draw/paint, there are other ways to outwardly express your emotions that are healthy and will start to change your love/hate relationship with food.

my bf is one of those naturally thin people too, but he does eat reasonably healthy and is active in martial arts, has a physically active job and stuff.  He can eat a LOT of calories though and not gain weight and it can be difficult at times because we go out to eat a lot and I get worried I'll gain and stuff.  He is very supportive of me though and the other day was joking and told me I'm getting so strong Im going to be able to beat him up soon lol :P  He is 5'9 and 130 He'd like to build up some more muscle himself.

It's rather funny to be in a relationship where one person is afraid of gaining and its hard to lose and the other person would do anything to be able to gain some more..... don't you wish you could just hand the extra over? lol
