| Weight Loss | Three pound gain in three days! | Feb 27 2008 15:15 (UTC) |
|
Three pounds is not that big a gain, and could be water. BUT, if you actually did "binge for three days straight," then its not water, honey, its calories. Everything you put in your mouth has calories and every binge has consequences. If you continue to binge for the rest of the week, you will gain more weight. Nothing mystical about it. That being said, I totally relate to binge-eating and I'm definitely not a perfect eater. Is something bothering you or gnawing at you? Maybe taking the time to figure out what the problem is and come up with a solution will help you to get the binge-eating under control. Just get back on the wagon, start fresh and do what you need to do (in a healthy way!) to feel good. And exercise! Not only will that make you feel better emotionally, it will burn some of those extra calories. Even a 30-minute walk will help. Good luck! |

I have a couple suggestions: 1. Start measuring yourself (bust, waist, hips, thighs, upper arms). That may give you a better sense of whether you're actually gaining weight in a bad way, or maybe just putting on muscle because of all the exercise! 2. Start a food diary. Write down everything you eat for a week. That will give you a better sense of how many calories you're actually consuming and where you can cut back. I really like the food log on this site -- you can find pretty much any food on there and it will keep track of your calories, fat, carbs, etc. for you. If you're not at a computer all day, just write it in a notebook. It could just be a matter of giving up that daily soda, using mustard on your sammies instead of mayo or oil, or having only 1 bowl of cereal a day. I don't eat dessert, don't drink soda, etc., but have about 15 pounds to lose. I was surprised when I started a food diary, because most of my extra calories were in really surprising places -- like my salad!! (Man, its crazy how many calories there are in different salad dressings and toppings!) Finally, don't beat yourself up too much! You are doing a lot of great exercise and it may be really easy to lose these 10 lbs. Good luck! |

Thanks . I guess its all about just working through each issue...... I'm sure my body will adjust to the increased exercise and I just have to be careful in the meantime about what I put in my mouth. |

google "marathon training." There are actually TONS of free websites that will give you a day-by-day training program. I had never run before, and used one of those programs to train for a 10K in three months. It was awesome!!!!!! I loved it, and had such a feeling of accomplishment after the race. Just one word of advice: incorporate running outside. Running on the treadmill is just not the same. I trained for a 5K before I ran the 10K. When I trained for the 5k, I ran only on a treadmill. I DIED on race day!!!!!!!! It was so much harder to run outside! Btw, your time is AWESOME!!!!!! You are going to kick butt on this marathon!! Good luck! |

I think its all about mind set. Your reply email was just full of excuses to bat away the suggestions other people made. (Sorry, that sounds really harsh, its not meant to be ....... read on........) I'm reading a book now that's all about changing the way you think. Its not a diet book, its not about counting calories or working out (all of which are necessary to lose weight), its about getting rid of those thoughts that allow you to keep doing the same thing over and over and over. Its called something like the Beck Diet Solution or Beck Diet Principle -- just google Beck and diet, I'm sure you'll find it. I am in my 30s and you are right about dealing with a slowing metabolism!!! I ate like a horse in my 20s and was able to burn it all off. In my 20s, I was a size 6/8. Now in my 30s, eating the same way, I went up to a size 10, and was heading towards a size 12. So this book has helped me to change the way I think about food. Its not about dieting, which is temporary. Its about getting control of habits that you think are uncontrollable. Anytime you think "I can't help it" or "that's just the way I am" - learn to call BS on yourself. Its hard. Good luck!!!!!!! |

Hi everyone, I had a tough last week - traveling four days and going from snow storm to snow storm across the country. Why does cold weather make me want to eat like a cow??? (Actually, most cows probably ate better than I did last week.......) But, I came home and got back on the wagon -- had a really great workout and ate really healthy. Its weird - when I got home on Thursday, I weighed myself at 175. By Sunday, I was down to 172!!!!!!!!!! Crazy, but I'll take it!!! Starting Weight: 178 lbs Starting Weight this week: 173 lbs Ending Weight this week: 172 lbs Total lbs Lost: 1 lb Goal for Next Weigh In: 2 lbs I would LOOOOOOOOOOVE to hit 170 or lower by next week..... I know that's a lot. Wish me luck!! |

My weigh-in for January 6: Reached my goal for this week! Starting weight: 178 Starting weight this week: 175.4 Ending weight this week: 173 Total lbs Lost: 2.4 lbs Goal for next weigh in: lose 2 lbs, so I'm at 171..... Work has been very hectic, and is only getting busier over the next two weeks. I have succumbed to the temptation to eat "comfort foods" to deal with stress and anxiety..... but will STOP doing that this week!!! Nothing is a better stress relief than exercise - I just have to make time on a daily basis to get that 30 minutes in. I can do it! I am GOING to do it. |

Hey all...... here's my weigh-in for Dec. 30: Starting weight: 178 Starting weight this week: 173 Ending weight this week: 175.4 Total lbs Lost: GAINED 2.4 lbs Goal for next weigh in: LOSE the 2.4 I gained!! I'm giving myself some slack.... the holidays, craziness at work and family visits all drove up the caloric intake, mainly in the form of desserts and alcohol. Should be able to cut those out no problem and get back on the weight loss track! Good luck to everyone and Happy New Year! |

Nita, its so good to hear about your weight loss!!! I agree, counting calories is very eye-opening and gives you the freedom to eat what you want as long as you stay within certain limits. It also helps me make up for days when I slip... :) Good luck with your continued weight loss! You are an inspiration! |

Hi xzcandizx. I'm new to the forum but wanted to reply to your post bc I can identify. I'm an attorney and I remember how stressful it was applying to law school, picking a school, and then getting through it!!!! I just wanted to tell you to believe in yourself. If you want to go to law school, you will do it! Don't let the tests and all the hype psyche you out. (And, by the way, I'm a big advocate of NOT going to law school. A lot of people do it because they don't know what else to do -- but its a very demanding profession, and you should feel comfortable that you've thought through all the factors and decided its what you really want.) If you ever want to talk about law-school or career-related stuff, please feel free to email me. I'm sorry to hear about your mom, but so gald that she was cleared by her doctors!!! As for getting back on track, have you ever tried yoga? I find it to be one the greatest stress relievers ever, and it can be a really good workout, too. Most classes cost around $15 on a one-time basis, but believe me it is worth every penny! It will help you to unwind and feel more peaceful, and regain the energy to focus on your weightloss goals. Good luck with everything! |

Adrileigh, I had this same problem -- and it can be very dangerous. A couple years ago, I lost a lot of weight and got really thin. At first it was great - I was exercising, feeling great, enjoying myself. Then I started to get paranoid about food..... everything I saw seemed like it was bad and I shouldn't eat it. Eventually, my metabolism slowed so much I started GAINING weight even though I was barely eating and exercising all the time! Luckily, I was able to readjust and start eating better. I maintained a healthy weight for several years (until I quit smoking and gained more -- but that's a different story!) You should be eating AT LEAST 1200-1300 calories per day. Otherwise, you are going to slow down your metabolism and mess up your body. Think of your body as a fireplace ....... if you don't put enough fuel in there, its harder to get the fire burning. Your body needs calories to burn calories. If you don't eat enough, your body will start SAVING calories instead of burning them. To get rid of your fear, try adding healthy lowfat foods, like a lowfat whole grain cracker with some lowfat peanut butter or cheese. Or a half cup of pasta with marinara sauce, a boiled egg at breakfast...... just small steps so you don't feel freaked out. Good luck! Be good to your body! |

Hi Ashalee, Good job on increasing your running time! I have found that its total exercise time that really makes a difference -- so instead of running, you might try walking but for double the amount of time (26 minutes of walking instead of 13 minutes of running). THAT will bump up your calorie burn! Also, walking is less stressful to your joints. Us runners are asking a lot from our knees, shins, and hips, especially when we get tired and our form is less than perfect. In any case, congrats on your weight loss and your increased stamina! Keep going!!! |

First of all, your husband's family is lucky to have such a gracious hostess! Breakfast should be easy: you can replace milk and dairy products with soy milk, Tofutti cream cheese, or any of the soy-based butters (like Smart Balance). Then just serve toast, cereal, oatmeal, eggs, whatever. Lunch: Sandwiches are easy - hummus with slices of cucumber, tomato, carrots, and even avocado is delicious. Or try a regular sandwich, but buy fake meat. Most grocery stores carry a brand called "Yves" that makes good fake turkey, fake bologna, etc. Another great option is soup and salad - split pea, tomato, and lentil soups are all really filling. Serve a side salad and some fruit. Dinner - there are a lot of great posts already, so I'll just post one of my favorite winter dinner recipes: VEGETARIAN SHEPHERD'S PIE Melt 2 Tbsp soy butter and add 1-2 tsp dried basil and some crushed garlic. Let sit. Boil and mash 3-4 small potatoes. Add the garlic/basil butter to the mashed potatoes and set aside. Chop and sautee in olive oil: half an onion, some garlic, 2 large carrots, 1 can kidney beans. Add 1 can diced tomatoes and some frozen peas to the sautee. Season with oregano. Put the sautee into a square baking dish, cover with a layer of the mashed potatoes (and maybe sprinkle some soy cheese on it), and bake for 30 minutes at 350. Have fun! Hope you have a great holiday! |

Adrileigh - congrats on your weight loss so far! Re: exercise, try finding an activity that involves exercise, but has a different point. I walk in the mornings before work sometimes. The thought that gets me out of bed is not "I have to work out," but "I bet its gorgeous outside. It would be so nice to have some quiet time to myself before I get to the office this morning." Something about being out walking while the streets are quiet and the morning sky is rising - its awesome. It brings me a lot of tranquility. Other times, I need to work out stress or tension. So then I hit the weights or go running -- with LOUD, f-u music on my IPod. Again, I'm not thinking about calories or pounds -- I'm motivated by the satisfaction of burning off that tense energy so I can clear my head and feel good again. Hope that helps! |

I'm on the brink of being in the 160s..... I'm 5'9" and weigh 173 lbs..... and can't believe it!!!! In my head, I'm 20 pounds lighter - LOL!!! I have always been pretty active and used to be really trim -- a size 6. Six years ago I quit smoking (after 10 years of smoking a pack a day), which was one of the greatest and hardest things I've ever done. I gained 10-15 pounds and figured it would just come off as my body got used to being without nicotine. Then I finished law school and started spending 14 hours a day at my desk... and another 5-10 pounds crept on without my even knowing it. I just started replacing my size 10's with size 12's!!!!!!!!! So much for the "it'll just come off" theory!! :) So, I just passed 35 and I'm commited. I'm motivated. I walked/jogged a 10K in June - my first ever. That felt great. Now I'm trying to incorporate other kinds of exercise and get those 20 pounds off forever!!!!! I found the food log and analysis to be really helpful. I had no idea I was consuming so much fat!!!!!!! I mean, I love cheese and dairy, but I also eat a lot of veggies and try to cook healthy. But I forgot how much damage a couple slices of cheese or a couple pats of butter can do! Here's wishing you all good luck .... I'll be looking to you for hope and inspiration! |

| Vegetarian | Why? And Hello! | Dec 06 2007 16:23 (UTC) |

Right on, cats-eyes!! I had a similar experience..... always felt a little grossed out by the meat I prepared. It seems like there are a million reasons to commit to a vegetarian diet, even if only part-time, or if you still eat some dairy. I was motivated just as much by concern for the environment as I was by the disgusting amount of consumption and waste I see around me. The effect that cattle and pig farming has on the environment is profoundly negative. Where I live, our watersheds are being polluted primarily by feces from farms. Out west, they're destroying natural habitats so that cattle can graze; but if that land was used to raise wheat or soy or corn, we could feed 10 times as many people with wheat as we could with cow meat. Then there's the quality of the meat/ethical treatment of the animals issue. With cattle and chicken and pigs and fish, the animals don't get fat enough fast enough to be profitable for the companies that raise, slaughter and sell them, so most companies (a) feed them things teh animals were never supposed to eat (like feeding cows meal that contains ground-up pieces of other cows, a cause of mad cow disease) and (b) inject them with growth hormones. When we eat meat, we ingest everything the animal did during its life. Yuck. Then there's the waste. On a macro level, American fast food restaurants and grocery stores thrive on selling "more for less," including meat. (E.g., the double-burger with bacon for 99 cents or the fact that the SMALLEST serving of steak at most restaurants is TRIPLE the size of a recommended single serving.) The "more for less" philosophy adds to the amount of food that is consumed, that rots or is thrown away. It shows a complete lack of respect for the energy and life that went into creating that food. I'm not saying we should never eat meat, ever. But we do have a choice about how much we consume and how we treat the animals during the course of their lives.

| One more thing: do something other than watch TV, so that your hands and/or mind are active. Its a lot hard to eat a bag of chips when you're turning the pages of a book or magazine. Sometimes I spend an hour or two at night making healthy food for the next day - snacks and lunch to take to work. That occupies my mind and my hands, and keeps me focused on healthy food, instead of mindless snacking. | |||

I am totally a night-snacker. Also an ex-smoker, and cigarettes definitely fulfilled that oral fixation for me. But I'm much happier as an ex-smoker, it was worth it to quit! I've figured out a couple things that help: 1. Try adjusting your eating earlier in the day. I find that a big dinner reduces the snack urge at night. A big lunch or breakfast does nothing to reduce the night-snacking. 2. Figure out what it is that soothes the oral fixation: sweet? crunchy? salty? creamy? Then figure out a lower-calorie alternative to fix that jones. For example, when I want something sweet, I eat a bowl of frozen blueberries instead of ice cream (they're really low calorie, and it takes forever to eat them when they're frozen!) If I want something crunchy, a fresh salad or carrot sticks with a little bit of hummus is really satisfying. If I want something salty, some miso soup with seaweed is good. 3. Try hot liquids. Something about sipping a good cup of herb tea or hot cocoa is really satisfying. 4. This is something I've never done before, but I swear its been amazing: I got chinese herbs from an accupuncturist. They come in a brandy solution in a little bottle with a "jigger" spout on top, so you have to shake the bottle to get a single drop out. The formula is "Female Stress Remedy". 10-20 drops on the tongue at night not only kills the snacking urge, but sooths that boredom/stress response, too. I don't know if I'm allowed to post other websites on this board, but check out heavenly bodies clinic in Arlington, Virginia. Good luck! |

I personally find it pretty awful. HOWEVER, I've tried other Quorn products that were pretty good. The turkey roast was just really dry and tasted weird. I ended up cutting it into chunks, mixing it with wild rice and an apple/blueberry compote that I quickly made. Then it was pretty good, but only because I managed to hide its original flavor. Wouldn't buy it again. Veat is my favorite fake meat. 100% better tasting than Quorn, but harder to find. |
