>>>"Olivia77 Do you have any advice for someone who doesn't really run (hurts my knees) but would like to try jogging? I would love to try but I would have to start very slowly, do you job in the morning or evening? Were you ever in a place that it was really tough?"<<< I'm in the same boat with knee pain and running, i started with walking fairly steadily a couple years ago (2 years after my most recent knee injury) and it helped build some endurance and the muscles which support the knee, so walking is a great way to start. But then i wanted to step it up and try running and found that i couldn't go very far at all w/o having to stop and catch my breath, then i found Cool runnings (a running site-google it) that has a great beginners training program: Couch to 5k, it starts by adding short intervals of running into your walking and increasing a little each week. i've found it extremely helpful in building strength and endurance. also, make sure you're doing some strength training for your legs to help support your knees and always listen to your body. if your knees say "no," listen! hope this helps! btw how chilly is it in B-town? I'm originally from NH and live in FL now, i get a little homesick sometimes, but not during this time of year, lol :-) |

| Weight Loss | So frustrated....! | Feb 19 2008 07:06 (UTC) |

Try taking measurements, those should be down by a lot,and you should already notice a difference in your clothes if you've replaced fat with muscle. It's hard when you only have a little to lose and if you focus on the pounds too much, you may become frustrated, I try to focus more on my measurements and the way my clothes fit. It's really rewarding when you see inches come off, more so than pounds (to me anyways). Give it a shot! Other than that just make sure that you're eating enough calories and try to mix up your workouts, confuse your muscles. Once your muscles get used to doing a particular exercise, it becomes easier for them and they burn less calories since they're not working as hard. Mixing it up will jumpstart your metabolism and help get you over that last hump. Good luck! |

LOVE EVERYTHING KASHI!!!!! my faves are the Go lean crunch, sweet and crunchy and really fills you up, and the oatmeal. Love the cookies, crackers, and granola bars for snacks. But the best, by far are the frozen meals/pizza. The frozen meals have more food than lean cuisine or WW smart ones, they taste better, and they fill you up more than those others! every time i make one at work everyone always asks me what i'm eating cause it smells so good. And everything tastes so fresh and yummy!! I buy so much Kashi stuff, I should be a share holder by now, lol :-) Best advice, try it all and find your faves! Enjoy! |

Wow, I really wish I had seen this thread a couple days ago. I could've used the motivation. I'm currently reeling from a 3 day long weekend which started with a nice dinner out for V-day followed by drinks at the bar and finished with pancakes and chips and dip and cheese and crackers and bbq on sunday, and a bunch of junk in between... All with no exercise!!!! unfortunately the weekend is only time I get to spend with my babe and he's all about relaxing and watching TV and drinking beer and going out to eat and I tend to catch his lazy, beer drinking, bad food eating attitude. I also "forget" to log calories on the weekend. I have to try harder to stay on track on the weekends!!!! I like the idea of limiting myself to just one "off" day. I'll give that a shot next weekend. I also need to try to exercise on the weekends because I usually end up catching up on sleep and watching tv. |

| Fitness | week 5 in Couch to 5k seems too hard | Feb 11 2008 06:33 (UTC) |

I'm working on the C25k also, my second attempt, i got off track during the holidays and now i'm starting week 2 tomorrow. The first time though, i got up to week 4 and had to do it a couple of times before advancing. Don't dispair, you'd be surprised what running intervals can do for your endurance! (and what taking time off and being lazy can do to it! i felt like i'd never ran a day in my life when i started again) It may seem like you're not running that much, but intervals are the best way to build endurance (and they're great for fat burning too If I can do it (never had endurance, even as a kid, i'm also a former smoker) you can do it!!!! Best of luck!!! |

I usually keep a small arsenal of aerobic/dance workouts recorded on my DVR for when it's raining and I can't go outside to run/bike or when I just want to switch things up a bit. I erase them after i use them a few times and record new ones so I don't get sick of them. If you're in the states, the cable station- fit TV plays all kinds of workouts like: strength, cardio, dance, yoga, pilates, etc. If you don't have access to these; tapes or dvds of at-home-workouts are generally pretty cheap and the best part is that you can use them whenever you have time, even in the middle of the night :-) |

| Recipes | Looking for quick suggestions for what do do with leftover roasted chicken | Jan 20 2008 08:48 (UTC) |

This is an idea I stole from some forum, can't remember where anymore, but I keep a tupperware in the freezer and toss my meat, veggie, and rice leftovers in it (I don't use pasta because it gets too mushy), then when it fills up, I make leftover stew. Not the best sounding name, I know, but it can be a really hearty, healthy and tasty soup depending on what you toss in there. Just defrost when you're ready to use it and toss it in a pot with some water and whatever spices you like, heat to boiling, then simmer. Not sure about exact times or water measurements, just go by taste. Experiment with it, I did and now it's a household favorite. just estimate for calorie amount, if you put healty stuff in it, it'll be healthy. |

| Weight Loss | When should I be worried and go to the doctor?? | Jan 20 2008 08:03 (UTC) |

You should never go below 1200 for a woman, anything lower than that will only slow down your metabolism and make your body store excess fat because it doesn't know when it's going to get enough nutrients to support your body's basic functioning. You may want to focus more on quality of food as long as you're within a healthy calorie range because nutrient deficits can have the same effect. Make sure you're eating all the right things, whole grains, lean protein, lots of fruits and veggies, and a little fat. Also, getting a check up with your doc is probably a good idea to check for any underlying conditions that may inhibit your weight loss. For example, they'll probably check your thyroid (among other things), because an underactive thyroid can cause weight gain and retention. Make sure you tell him/her about your history of eating disorder, you may have some lingering effects of the anorexia. Hope this helps |

There was a local middle school kid doing a science experiment in my area, that made headlines. She went around to fast food places and gathered samples of ice (from machines where you fill your own cup of soda) and toilet water. After testing the samples... the toilet water was cleaner!!!!! Gross, one of the few things you'd think to be safe at a fast food joint, the ice.... and no, not even close. |

| Games & Challenges | ~*~Designer Jean Challenge? Love my jeans by Valentine's Day!~*~ | Dec 10 2007 08:26 (UTC) |

Hi! I'll join your challenge. I'm new here too and it's always been an unofficial and unspoken goal to reward myself with a great, expensive pair of jeans that make my butt look great when I reach my goal. Think I'm gonna buy some seven jeans though, not sure how much they are but my friends wear them and they all look great in them (i'm not that into fashion or designers, I just buy the stuff that looks good and fits me well). I have way more to lose than you though, trying to get rid of 40, preferably 50lbs I can do it though, and so can you. You obviously have a great drive to impact your life for the better, or else you wouldn't be here ;-) |

Is jump roping as good an exercise as running?
In terms of calorie burning, moderate jumping is about equal to running a 10-minute mile, although calorie burning is always a function of time... Read more
