| Weight Loss | I'm back with the same issues | Jun 27 2009 21:30 (UTC) |

Y'know I eat basically the same things day in and day out.
Salads and oatmeal with p.b. & yogourt make up my daily intake. I rarely vary from this. Would I have better luck if I were to change up my diet from time to time. Like exercise, if you do the same ones all the time their results get lessened. Is this the same with diet And in my salads I have my different lettuces, cucs' carrots, protein (chicken, tuna, or cottage cheese. Or sometimes I do the vegetarin one with almonds, and I count them out, raisins, and sunflower seeds. Any ideas ladies? |

there are 155 calories in 1/4 cup. AND that is plenty. It's very filling! I eat mine with a couple TBSP of fat-free yogurt, and once in a while I add 2 tsp. organic yogurt-for extra protein. |

I need to up my water intake-again. I tend to fall back on that.
Today, I'm going to pick up this stuff called WHOLY TEA, which detoxifies the liver and bowels. I used it before and it did work-for a while. I found I have to change up my products on a regular basis. I could tell I was bloated by my tummy and when I got on the scale at the gym I was up more than five pounds-in four days! Hopefully, things will change for the better starting today-or tomorrow. Would you like me to let you know? |

The calulator here subtracts the number of calories you would be burning even if you were at home just sitting around. So, for me, I use 400 calories at one of my workouts in an hour. From that my hourly rate is subracted, making it a grand total of 340 EXTRA calories i burned. I questioned this, too, a few months back. I couldn't understand how my activity level/calories burned did not equal to the amount said. Do remember that you calories burned during and after cardio are still burning. HOWEVER, if you really want to see results you MUST be weight training as that burns calories for hours and hours after you've actually finished your work out. I don't know HOW to calculate this, however. I don't know how long my own body metabolizes these calories, as everyone is different, and it depends on the intensity with which you burn. Eg. yesterday I did 75 minutes of weights, including stability ball routines. Then I ran on the track for 43 minutes at 10mph. HOW do I really figure all that out? I don't know. AND, to make things more confusing-sorry about this-a member wrote and said the calories stated here are not accurate, according to her heart rate monitor! OY! I say let's ban together and demand more precise calculations! I for one, will start. I'll be mailing this message to one of the moderators/owners of this site. Whose behind me here???

Thanks for answering, wallpaper. When I work out I do so pretty vigorously and I work out for a good two hours, at the very least one and a half hours. That's four or five times a week, which, I guess is why it was suggested to up my level. Not getting enough nurtients & calories can hinder the results I am looking for, which is to be a couple pounds less and definetly quite LEAN! That's why I upped my protein intake as well, and lowered my fat intake. Even though all my fats were healthy, from organic p.b. and sunflower seeds, flax seeds, etc. I still cut down on those. I'm 54 and am 5'3". So getting to where I want to be is a lot more difficult than it was even five or six years ago. Darn! Ego and vanity, whatever would we do without a little of these in our lives? LoL! |

| Weight Loss | protein question | Apr 02 2009 15:08 (UTC) |

Have you thought about using a protein powder to make a protein drink? Look for one high in protein, low in carbs and fats. A good powder would have at least 20 - 25 mg. of protein per serving. Then you can, if you like add some egg whites (the ones in the cartons are pasturized and you CAN eat them raw, like in your shake). The rest is really up to you. Add some fruit yogurt or if you're really watching and counting calories, just water or skim milk. I know I find it difficult to consume in foods enough protein as I work out about 4-5x a week and do weight training on all those days as well as cardio.' hope this helps out a bit. p.s. to anyone out there who says eating proper foods for protein is the best way to go. I know! I find it difficult to eat that much protein every day on a regular basis. |

time will tell. Do as much as you can since the benefits for cardio are much more than just weight control. Even taking a walk at lunch in addition to the cardio you can fit in is better than nothing, yes? Good luck~ |

what makes up 10,000 steps? On days I work out 4-5x a week, I am either on the elliptical for 40-50 minutes OR running/jogging on the track and sometimes the treadmill.
What would the mileage be for 10,000 steps. I know the stride has what to do with it. Just a general understanding would help. AND does anyone really count their steps, if they don't have a pedometer?

On days I am not working out it would be unhealthy for me to have a 500 cal. deficit. Would it be a good idea to have a >500 on days I do workout to even it out throughout the week. I do w/o 4 - 5x a week. Each time is at least 1 1/2 - 2 hours. As far as the 'sedentary' I put that since I days I don't go to the gym I am usually pretty sedentary, in as far as cardio goes.

On days I don't go to the gym I've been working with the stability ball at home. Nothing too stenuous. Come the summer I'll be doing some running outside, too. I have started to do yoga one day a week and pilates one day a week. Honestly? I don't know from balance. I go all out. I find if I take off more than one day in between my w/o days, I find it difficult to go back. Since I do a lot when I am working out, I DO need to remember I don't have to do more or better than the time before. Today I was on the elliptical for over an hour, working at a pretty good pace. And then close to an hour with weights and then some stretching and stability. Tomorrow I'll go a bit easier on myself. I like to change it up so my body doesn't really know what to expect from one time to the next. I also run on the track and will start treadmill tomorrow. I agree that I feel much better on days I do work out. And I do have less of an appetite. On days I don't work out I eat out of boredom. |

once I get to like a food, I eat it non-stop. Yes, most of them have been healthy, and yet to eat something every day, day in/day out is a bit weird. Now, I am on t his vanilla yogurt, organic p.b./sunflower seed/fax seed combo. Sounds healthy, right? Well, try counting how many calories and grams of fat are in that! I was eating this at least twice a day. And I'm not talking about small portions. I talkin' big heavy duty portions. Had convinced myself it was OK. That is until I really added up all those calories. Wow! I've been through bran muffins/yogurt AND p.b. on multi-grain toast, poached eggs with olives, tomatoes & Cucumber dressing. I eat unti I get sick of it, which can take anywhere from a couple of months to well over a year or two. I'm trying to cut down even more on my intake of my present foods. I'm working out and weight training and would like to see some MORE definition. I'm making it more difficult for t he muscles to pop. And yet, I feel pulled toward eat this stuff of late. I know the feeling of what you all speak of, for sure! |

So hello,
First full day of spring...and thrilled I made it through another winter. OK, I know living in T.O. there is still at least one more month where we can see snow. I once bought the shower curtain from a hotel. It was just something that I wanted and I could afford. I do believe they'll sell anything-for the right price, of course. Perseverance, huh? That's #1 in my life in almost every, if not every aspect of my life these days, too. And patience, I'm learning to be more patient. Y'know when you ask your Higher Power for patience, He'll give you lots to endure to learn patience! Happy Spring! |

wow, I just started to read some of the posts I have missed after all these months, and I have to say, I'll never remember everything I have read and that was only a few pages. I am doing well today-this is a one day at a time disease, so I am vigilant to do the'do' things. I bought myself a stability ball yesterday and worked with it (or more to the point, against it!). Wow, w/o going to the gym for a few months my core strength has gone soft. I've never been good with balance, and now it seems to be worse. I have every intention to keep at it so I can get that strenght in my core even better than it was before I stopped going to the gym in October. I'm having some issues around keeping tabs on my calories in vs. calories out on my homepage. I tend to, since I've had an eating disorder, to get more obsessed than is healthy and definetly not helping my recovery. I am aware of most of the caloric content of most foods, give or take. When I was working out a few years ago, I was NOT counting every calorie, and just making sure I went to the gym on a regular basis and did my cardio and weight-training. I do believe I need to do that again. I can't afford to go off the deep end at this point in my life. Still, I'd love some support from the gals here. renee |

Well, it is October 10th, just over a week and the most I've done, occasionaly is some slow stretching and some lifting of very light weights, like 5 lbs., every couple days. My back and side still hurt so I'm think I'd better just leave it. I feel terrible though for not working out. Not only emotionally and guilt and all that, it's physically and my head space. I guess in the long run it's better to do it this way than to try and do more and really put myself out for longer periods of time. I do try and walk more, though. Ahh well. |

I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION...along the same lines.
On days I don't work out, I go very little below my burn meter. It's registers as 1470, so there is little wiggle room to go less. SO, what I do is on days I do work out -3-5 days a week I go for a greater deficit than 500 calories. I try to aim for about 750-1000. I figure over the week, it'll work out, more or less to the same. Does anyone else feel this way or do the same? |

I'm not sure what your definition of a binge is. However, if you mean that you'll be eating a lot more than usual, well, you might want to pick and choose what you'll 'pig-out' on. I know how hard it is to remember this: it is only one day, one meal. It will not and does not have to be the beginning of the end. Just go back to eating the way you usually do-it is healthy, isn't it? And, of course, go full force on the exercise. Push yourself a bit more over the next two or three days, or just go back to your usual routine. Do you binge/purge? Be careful about that. It's a cycle of life you do not want to enter if you haven't already. (I've been there, and it is hell on earth). IF YOU HAVE a date or something coming up in the near future you want to look fab for, just eat a bit of everything so your taste buds get satiated and you can still maintain your shape and most of all your sanity! Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving this Cannuck is from Toronto! |

Go to a health food store and see what they offer. You could always buy a 'plain' yogourt and add your own sweetner, if your search finds you nothing.

I agree a combo of exercises is important. I don't think the generalized statement of 'cardio machine crap' is very helpful. I live in an area which is cold and not outdoor friendly for at least six months out of a year. Change up your workouts. No 'one' workout is wrong. You'll, however, see much better results if you change things up. Even from the order in which you exercise. HOWEVER, as was said your diet is probably 80 - 85% responsible for how you look. A eating pattern which is higher in protein and lower in carbs and fat makes a huge difference. You can exercise from now until next week, and if you're not eating to support your workouts you won't see results you're looking for. It takes time before the weight-trainng benefits really lock into place. You won't be burning more fat by weights from day one. It takes time, and if you stay with it you WILL see results.
Good luck |

Good Autumn Morning to you all: I did watch as the clock as it hit the ll:44 am mark here in Toronto, thus officially say hello to Fall. Actually we're having a goreous day here. It's sunny, about 18C-which is about 66F. Just a bit of wind. I need to remember to stay in the day OR days such as this one will be missed by myself, thinking too much about the long cold winters. I also have to find some postive stuff about winter. It's does come every year and going through it with a bah humbugish attitude, which I often do, just makes the whole long season worse. SO, once again, this year I shall try to reach in deep, and find something nice about the short dark cold winter days! Do any of you ladies use protein supps? I can't remember if I have asked this of you already. I know I've been on other sites talking about it. I just can't remember if it was discussed here or not. I like to take the protein powder, since I do find it difficult to get sufficient protein in my daily diet. Especially since I do my weight training-and I go at it pretty seriously, I know I need even more than the average (bear),oops woman. *a joke for any of who remember yogi bear* I am not working out today. I've gone at it a lot the past few and really feel tired, achy. I'll get back on the horse tomorrow. Anyway my place needs a good vacuumming, and this old thing I use takes so much energy to push it around, it's like a mni workout in itself. Since I am not remembering names of the bat: to those who are or have family members struggling with health-I'll give out an extra prayer tonight. AND to the rest of us, including me, how does patience sound? OK? OK! renee |
