Hi!  I want to continue the journey again this year!

What's your start weight?  305 lbs  (Aug/Sep 2007)
What's your current weight?  234.5 lbs  (Jan 1, 2009)
What's your goal weight?  185 lbs

185 is my goal right now.  I know that's still high, but one of my elementary school horrors (there were so many) was when my 6th grade Math teacher brought in a kilogram scale and weighed everyone in front of the classroom.  That day I weighed 86 kgs - 190 pounds - so my goal is to weigh less than that!  I've been heavy my whole life and when I saw 305 on the scale at the end of August 2007, I knew that it would never get easier to exercise and develop new better habits and a new self-image - so I started.  I would love to break 200 lbs in 2009, but aiming for improved health and balance is my lifelong journey.  Good luck to each of you on your own journey!

I'm doing it, too!  80 lbs lost from September 15, 2007 to June 13, 2008 and now am maintaining and ready to continue my journey to better health and more energy.  The long-term statistics are not good, but with consistent attention to eating nutritious foods and finding the calorie-burning activities that are easy to make part of one's lifestyle, it CAN be done.  Even my beloved told me he was proud of me for doing it the "hard" way!!!!  How great is that?????????  I struggle sometimes because I love to eat and I love to eat A LOT...  But when I do my part consistently my body responds!

Hey, Katie!  I got caught up in some house trouble drama and went crazy with the eating at dinner.  I ate around 3100 cals and am not wanting to live in DENIAL just because my man and I are all stressed out.  Down 13 lbs?  Excellent!!!!  Only 5'7"?  Hehe - I am 5'4" - petite clothes are too short and regularlengths are too long - we're all "awkward" when it comes to clothes.  If you are talking about dropping cals due to having a waist that goes with a smaller-sized person, again, I'd urge following the calorie target calculator - dropping too low CAN work against you - check out forum posts about this - you'll hear the same things from all sorts of different people.  It can mess up your calorie burn factor - but I'm no doctor or health professional!  Just a CC buddy who cares.  And hey, some women get mad b/c they lose in the chest area first!!!!  Luck is relative, huh???????  Hey, well have a great Friday!

You can wear that dress - I just know it!  Yes, I also feel crappy when I eat poorly.  I have been eating LOTS lately - 2200-2900/day and not feeling well, but I'm back on the wagon, sister!  Yesterday I did okay but today was great - less than 1600 cals eaten and more than 2600 burned!!!  I walked this morning and then cleaned our new house (I was off work today) so I am soooo very proud of myself!  After eating good foods, it makes me feel sick to eat "bad foods" and I think many folks will agree.  When I started I played with the calculators and figured out that 1750 was my ideal calorie goal - but that was quite a few lbs ago...  I had the fastest, best success in the periods when I was eating 1550-1650 a day including LOTS of veggies, some fruits, eggs & egg whites, edamame/legumes, salads with the dressing on the side and very limited refined starches.  I felt soooo good and am ready to jump back in.  I highly recommend the calculators - they work!  How tall are you?  It sounds like you're active, so I wouldn't recommend dropping that low - you can try it, but you might go into a kind of "starvation" mode and then your body will conserve what it has - NOOOOOO THANKS!   (LOL)  I calculated what I (statistically) burn in a day and how many cals I need to get to my goals.  I had been maintaining since mid-June, but now I'm seeing the scale go up a little and I'm ready for my next move DOWN the scale.  Totally binged, huh?  Well, tomorrow can be a makeup day if you're up for it - I too will be making up for eating everything I see for the past few weeks.  I will report in tomorrow!  Ciao!

Hey Katie, that's a great question - I would like to be at 185 by June 2009.  I'm at 221-225 right now due to exactly what you said: I start getting confident, then cocky, then downright lazy about following through on a healthy LIFE, not a temporary diet to reach a short-term goal!  I think my goal is totally attainable if I stick to counting calories for a 500/day deficit and eating whole, nutritious foods.  I'd love to check in and just say: this is the good thing I did for my health today and this is the exercise I did today.  I jokingly say that  life gets in the way of my health, but it's really about the moment-to-moment and day-to-day choices that all add up to the quality of life we have.  Don't you think?

I see recipe books as being for special treats I might not otherwise make, not everyday eating, and I have never owned a recipe book that I used more than a few recipes from anyway...  I  bought the Hungry Girl Recipe Book and enjoyed the humor and have even tried a couple of recipes out of it.  More than even enjoying the fun and the mini survival guides/tips/tricks, I appreciated that HG is presenting lower-calorie options for the way many people live already...  it's not THE solution, just a fun take on eating a little better and learning a little more.  Like she says, she's not a nutritionist.  The way some people (NOT EVERYONE!!!!) eat on a regular basis is much scarier than anything in the HG Recipe Book!  Just my opinion...   Wink

Hey, Katie!  I'd love to be/have an accountability buddy - it's easy to stray, but when we can all help each other, the journey is easier and more enjoyable.  I started my journey to better health after living in denial and yo-yoing with diets since I was six years old - my parents took me to Weight Watchers in fifth grade, etc. - I had dieting horrors on a regular basis.  About a year ago, I stepped on the scale, saw 305, and about had a heart attack.  I had just turned 35 in June and knew it would never get easier to achieve health as I got older - just harder and why wait 'til heart trouble or diabetes set in to start changing?  I have lost 80 lbs and feel great - except that lately I have gotten really relaxed about what I eat and have gotten really lazy about regular exercise, too.  I'd love to buddy-up and share accountability on a regular basis and success/struggles along the way!  Count me in!  (PS - My goal is to lose 120 lbs and then re-assess my health goals...)

It is possible that the particular ATM you went to was temporarily offline or the bank's system went down temporarily.  If it had been a balance issue, you would've gotten a different kind of message.  Did you press the correct type of account when requesting the balance?  Some people choose "savings" when they only have a "checking," or vice versa and they will get that "invalid acct" message.  I do work in a bank...  Is there an automated telephone banking system at your bank?  Or do you have online banking?  Both are good backup options.  Hope the mystery gets cleared up soon!

I actually gave a co-worker some vitiman D and told her that it was my diet pill.  Told her that they were illegal and that I could hook her up for a fee.  Lol  She fell for it.

OMG!!!!  That is so naughty - yet hilarious!  Some people will try anything short of hard work and commitment.  Serves her right for being lazy!

Motivation Anyone else afraid of the scale? Aug 11 2008

Get on the scale and out of the land of denial!  (LOL, but really!)  I ate horribly ALL weekend and was scared and embarrassed to face the scale, but I decided if I didn't, I might just get more scared and more depressed and discouraged and just keep eating.  So I got on the scale - EIGHT POUNDS UP FROM MY LOWEST WEIGHT - think movie scream here - and recorded the weight in my weight log and am about to go for a walk and plan out what I'm going to eat this week to drop both the water weight from all the salty foods and eat for a bigger deficit this week to at least get back where I was and move downward, not upward.  You have two days to eat well and if you don't like the numbers you see on Wed., you'll know what to do next week.  Moral:  Opportunity for strategy instead of setting yourself up for failure.  You can bluff anyone BUT yourself!  Be kind but be honest with yourself - you're okay!

PS - It just proves that b/c people see others as *whatever* (fit, happy, successful, motivated, committed) that it has always been that way or that there was no struggle/journey/strategy/effort to get there!  It's so much easier to lose health than gain it, or to not try than to keep plugging away.  Great thread!   Cool

YES.  Great for you, BTW - those kinds of comments are great and make it easier to keep going!  My significant other and I used to walk to a little ice cream shop nearby that is run by a father and son.  (I weighed 305 at my peak, but never turned down walking if we ended up at thatice cream place - LOL!)  We hadn't gone by there in a long time, but I started walking for health and weight loss and one evening I walked by the ice cream place and the son (who is totally cute and maybe in his early 20's?) yells out in front of all these people who are sitting outside eating ice cream:  "WHOA, HAVE YOU LOST LIKE A HUNDRED POUNDS???????"  In a way, I was mortified, as I never would've phrased a compliment that way, but yet I knew he was sincere and totally complimentary so I yelled back:  "NO, SEVENTY-NINE AND A HALF!!!!" and a couple of people said. "Great!" and "Good job!" and then I waved and kept walking.  I only meant to walk for half an hour, but ended up feeling so inspired that I walked a whole hour instead!  At times I feel like I don't look different, but I do!  I've lost 84 lbs now and have lots more to go, but that comment was really a nice surprise!

Foods Pizza W/O Cheese? Aug 10 2008

You can "build" a pizza with no cheese and get the nutritional value on Domino's website - I've done it!  I used to order pizza with no cheese due to being lactose intolerant.  The bad part was that I felt entitled to eat more slices since there were less calories with no cheese...  (LOL)  I make pita pizza sometimes and I'll either use no cheese, 1 tbsp parmesan, or one sliced Babybel or Babybel Light, depending on my mood.  Anyway, good luck!

I also don't count carbs, but I do try to maximize nutrition in the calories I ingest.  The only carbs I avoid are white sugar and white flour.  I eat lots of fruits and veggies and even seeds and nut butters.  I also have to be careful because too much of a good thing is still too much.  I try to manage by portioning out my snacks and that way when the container/bag/whatever is empty, I'm finished eating!  Don't feel guilty, just log your calories!  Cool

I'm no expert, but what about some nice, intense yoga sessions that don't involve pressure on your foot?  Maybe taking some time that would've been used for running to really stretch and take care of those muscles (and soothe your mind) while you're waiting to run again?  Just an idea.  Also, I'm glad baby is okay!

Fitness How can I break that mental barrier? Aug 08 2008
02:41 (UTC)

For me, the mental challenge is that I make it "more than what it actually is."  I know it sounds silly, but I build up a situation in my mind, sometimes unrealistically, especially when I have guilt for not doing my part to achieve better health.  Safina:  I officially release the hold that going to the gym has over you!   (waves magic wand over Safina...)  Seriously, I get over my mental hurdle when I say:  It's just a (fill-in-the-blank) - i.e., walk, trip to the gym, trip to the dentist, whatever, then I remove the overpowering hold that grips my brain!  (LOL)  Sometimes, even if I don't feel like it, I do what some people call "act as if..."  And I just go through the motions:  I put my workout pants on, put my t-shirt on, put my socks and shoes on, grab my mp3 player and just walk out the door - no overthinking, overprocessing, or beating myself up!  I just got back from a nice long walk after feeling awful for the last few days about not exercising.  I "acted as if" I wanted to go and just a few minutes into my walk I felt wonderful.  I hope this helps, and let me tell you, everyone has peaks and valleys.  But people who are successful over the long term keep trudging up that valley to the next peak.  Feel free to PM me if you want, and just keep putting one foot in front of the other.  You're TOTALLY normal and okay!!!!   Cool

PS:  Melkor is right - no one will judge you, they'll be glad for you - all the people at the gym are proactively seeking better health and fitness - you'll fit right in!
