Stir Fry is incredibly healthy for me unless I get it from a restaurant. In the later case, it's too fattening for me. Usually, I buy frozen stir fry at the grocery store and make my own stir fry sauce. It takes little oil when you make it yourself vs when you buy it at the store. 4.5 cups of stir fry = 350 calories when I make it myself.

Dumplings are bad if you eat a lot since it's just pasta and meat, but you could say that about almost everything.

No comment on Lo Mein. lol.

If you've been on this site since January, you should know by now, that unless you ate approximately 24,500 calories MORE than you burned, you didn't actually gain 7lbs.

Food and liquid (even water, which doesn't have any calories, and thus won't make you gain weight) has weight whether it's in your stomach, or in your hand. Don't you think you'd weigh more if you held all the food you binged on in your hand and then stepped on the scale?

Not to mention, if you were binging, you probably had a lot of sodium, which could make you retain water on top of the weight of what you ate. It'll go away on it's own as you digest your food and expel the waste, and drink enough water to negate the effects of the sodium.

If you're tempted to binge, your 'diet' probably is too restrictive. You might want to rethink your plan.

There needs to be a read me first board to common questions like this...

In RE: to struggs, drinking more water will make you retain more due to the sodium in you. The sodium that goes through your kidneys is 95% reabsorbed, and when sodium is reabsorbed, water gets reabsorbed due to the osmotic pressure you just created.

At any rate, you should really know that  you didnt gain 7lbs, especially if youve been dieting and have experienced fluctuations first hand.

Weight Loss Is it bad to eat majority of cals at dinner time? Mar 08 2008

From my neurobiology and endocrine classes, it can make a difference. When you eat, you increase insulin in your body which lets you absorb more glucose and then convert it to glucagon and then into your fat tissue. This happens any time you eat. However, if you eat late at night (and you arent going to do anything to burn it off, like say, sleep) you will have a lot of glucose in your blood and then most of it will go into your adipose tissue because you aren't doing anything to turn glucose into energy.

In other words, it's easier to burn the glucose that you just ate than to get glucose from your fat tissue. Therefore, you'd burn more calories. It's not something you should rely on though because if you have a net caloric input of -500 calories per day, I'm sure eating some of the calories later at night will not put you into a net gain of calories.

Either way, its practically insignificant to a diet plan/exercise!

studies were done in europe with white chocolate vs dark choc.

dark choc lowered cholesterol but not much because everyone had 1 bar/day for about a year.

then they repeated the experiment but with ~9g of dark choc vs a bar of dark choc.

9g was proven to help lower cholesterol by about 4pts.

So.. have a dark hershey kiss a day, i do that actually.

sorry for butchering the experiment.

It will tone your legs. Everything else wont really be worked out or relaxed either. Your shoulders might, since you will be leaning forward, and so will your back because of posture. I'm not an expert, but if you want to work out your upper body, you should do upper body workouts. You know? It's like a boxer doing upper body workouts, but he still needs strong legs. Just standing up moving side to side isn't a good enough workout, so he will do some leg workouts like sprinting or cycling or squats.

Sometimes, i work out so much i can eat what ever afterwards.

like wrestling practice for me, you burn a lot of calories (not correct on CC).

a 2.5 hour practice lets you burn nearly 2000 calories give or take 500 depending on how hard you practice, if coach holds you after prac, 5am practice included, etc. because it's basically 2.5 hours of conditioning which is more intense than a lot of the exercises listed here at CC.

Foods Count the calories in Fruits?? Jan 30 2008

Original Post by ainedb:

A medium banana is 110 calories each. If you eat two bananas and an apple a day, you can have 300 calories right there. You do need to count that!

There are things that are called "negative or zero" calorie foods according to some doctors. To digest food, it takes energy; however, if you eat something (lets say celery) which has almost no calories, you end up with a net or zero calorie food.

It is true, however, that everything you eat has calories, but imagine eating something with some calories but it being made out of cellulose (you cant digest that. Since you can't digest it, you can't convert the energy into calories and you just poop it out. Stuff like celery is hard to digest which expends more energy. A banana is really sweet, so i doubt that is 'zero'. celery is most cellulose and water i believe (kinda like bark lol).

anyways, if you dont count them even if it's a banana, who cares. it's only 100 calories. if you ate a banana everyday, it would take you more than a month to have a net gain of a lb.

hope this helps.

Weight Loss calorie intake confusion Jan 29 2008

being 19 > curse.

The only way a girl like you can get 2500 is if you expend a lot of energy everyday (exercise). If you do, then your metabolism is high regardless of heredity matters. Anyways, maybe you input the data wrong. Maybe you have the male button clicked instead of the female or you overestimated your activity level since you say 1500 cal/day is what you need to maintained weight.

I've been a Calorie Count user for a while now  but have not made an account until recently and started a diet recently too. Initially, my goal was to lose 37lbs also, but it's now ~25lbs. I'm 5'4". You start by finding your minimum caloric intake to maintain weight under the tab "tools". After that, you  use the tool where you put your initial and final date of your goal as well as your goal weight, and it tells you how much calories you should eat per day to achieve your goal weight by your desired time. Then, just log in the food you eat under the my account tab and yeah.
Foods Cheesecake Factory - Trying to be sensible... Jan 27 2008

if you are as 'large' as you say you are and you are worried you will gain 3-5 lbs back, then you are going to need a heck of a lot of calories to do that. Say you need 3300 calories/day + ~4lbs*3500cal/lb, that means you would have to eat 17,300 calories at the cheesecake factory. That means, you would have to eat 17 slices of cheesecake to just come close to gaining that back. Basically, what I'm saying is don't worry about gaining back the 3-5 lbs, but also watch what you eat there, as in, try avoiding dessert and fried foods. Avoid seconds, empty calories... you know... just 'calorie pinch' while you are there. Someone said sharing a meal earlier, that's a great idea. I hope your family is supportive too, that helps a bunch. Remember 17K+ calories to gain back about what you lost. That's basically ~30 entrees there given that the avg entree is 800 cals. I go to the cheesecake factory and get myself a cheesecake like once a month. Mmmm, it's good. I know my ways of small splurging at bad places with bad food is bad, but my goods outweigh my bads which means I wont be losing weight as fast as i would without it, but i am still losing the weight. Plus, I get to eat bad foods and keep my mentality more 'free' and not so much in a 'prison' per say.
Foods Why doesn't my bread dough rise? Jan 27 2008

Original Post by jazzygal:

Okay, so the past few days I have been trying some new bread recipes. One for pizza dough and one for a loaf of whole wheat bread. Both of these require yeast and some time to rise before baking. So I follow the directions to a T, but my dough isn't rising hardly at all. The directions do say that you should put the dough in a 'warm' place to rise however.

Being that it's 35 degrees outside and not exactly 'warm' in my apartment, I don't know where they expect me to put the dough to rise. Is this my problem? Also, FYI I am using Bob's Red Mill Whole Wheat Flour...it says right on the front of the package 'Perfect for bread made with or without a bread machine' so I know I am using bread flour. I have been letting my bread rise in turned-off oven so far. I let it sit for the exact time that they say too.

Any body know why my bread won't rise?

A "warm" place just helps the yeast grow (the yeast eat the sugar you are adding into your bread- at least, i hope you are adding sugar because your bread wont rise). Therefore, if it is really cold where you are, the yeast will not grow as fast. I make my dough the day before and let it sit in the fridge for the next day.

Also, another factor could be that when you mix the yeast in water&sugar solution, the water is too hot and kills the yeast and therefore the yeast can not eat the sugar and bud.

Here's the deal. I need someone to motivate me to get up and go work out even though I'm tired. I never got to go to bed today, so have been up for 24 hours. (I work nights as a nurse) I am really feeling guilty for not going to the gym today. My goal is to go to the gym Friday thru Tuesday, take off Wed and Thurs. This is due to my work schedule. I work nights Tues, Wed, Thurs.

I know this sounds silly. There is that part of me that knows I need to go, and then the other part is saying oh it's okay, you've worked hard, your tired, it won't hurt to skip a day. But if I skip am I heading down the path I always seem to go on, you know the one were you begin to make excuses for why you quit doing things. Or am I being anal retentive and need to relax and get over myself.

Anyone got any answers?

I don't think you are going down the wrong path. If you work nocs, you need sleep. Just relax. Don't be so hard on yourself if you miss a day of going to the gym. Just make going to the gym flow with you. If you really don't want to go to the gym today, but go, and do the same the following day and day after that, I think you attitude will just get worse. This reminds me of when people go "ahh, i will gain 23724lbs of weight if I have a splurge day/that brownie" In reality, most people wont eat 3600 calories over the total of what they burned that day(in my case, thats 6000+ calories). So, if I ate that brownie or splurged on chow mein, etc., there shouldn't be a drastic gain on the scale- especially over the long haul.

The info you guys are finding on your potato bags are all pretty close in nutritional values, but aren't quite what I need. clairelaine, I had actually done the search and turned up the same pages you did, but I took another look and decided my best bet is to use 2 of them, since I found no other possible comparisions. Calories in Potatoes, Baked, Skin ,Calories in Potatoes, Baked, Flesh

Here is the comparison:Baked, Skin Baked, FleshServing Size 1 skin (58.0 g) Serving Size 1/2 cup (61.0 g)Calories 115 Calories 57 total fat 0.1 g ---------------------------------0.1saturated fat 0.0 g --------------------------0.0 polyunsaturated fat 0.0g -------------------0.0cholesterol 0 mg -----------------------------0sodium 12 mg --------------------------------3total carbohydrates 26.7-------------------13.1dietary fiber 4.6 g ----------------------------0.9sugars 0.8 g ----------------------------------1.0protein 2.5 g -----------------------------------1.2vit. C13 % -------------------------------------13%calci um 2 % -----------------------------------0%iron 23 % -------------------------------------- 1 % My conclusion: drastic reduction of 50% or more in calories, sodium, fiber, calcium & iron, just by removing the skin from a potato. The calorie reduction was a great surprise to me.

Um, why do you need it to be exact? I'm sure if you are off by a few calories or what not it wont hurt you. If you are off by +/-100 calories everyday from your goal, it still wont hurt you drastically.

Correction: 1 kilocalorie = 1000 calories

So when you eat a piece of bread, it's actuall 100,000 calories (100 kilocalories).

However, when you burn calories, that is also in kcal.

You can tell your friends that you burn about 1 calorie by a single blink (but that's not in kcal eheh).

Foods Is There Such Thing As Eating TOO MUCH Fiber One Cereal? Dec 20 2007

that's nice you go regularly because usually what happens when you have too much fiber is that your bowels become hard and sometimes too compact that it either becomes difficult to come out of you or is just a.. hard poopy.. unless you match the high intake of fiber with plenty of fluids.

Fitness Gee, i shouldve started running earlier -- burned 300 calories in 20 minutes ??!! Dec 18 2007
22:23 (UTC)

Did you have a resistance on it? That's another factor in burning calories. Anyways, when I run on an elliptical machine after entering my stats, I burn 250 calories on 3 resistance and maybe 6mph on average with a 6 incline (doesn't mean much to me because incline on elliptical machines feel like nothing) in 20 minutes.

On a regular treadmill, you burn more with incline rather than speed, however, with the stats you give, it seems like it's unreasonable. You probably burned ~150 cals.

This is a hard question. It's kind of bland for the most part, but it really depends on your tastes and how you cook it. For me, I like it stewed meals and only stewed meals, and I enjoy them because they have a bland taste since they are not the centerpiece of my meal.

you need to know how many cups you made total.

e.g. if all that fit into 1 cup, you'd have ~1740 calories per cup.

if it were 2 cups, 870 per cup.

Moreover, if you split this meal up 10 ways, it would only be 174 calories per cup.

Veggies count though, unless you aren't putting in much.
