Fitness Why do you love your treadmill? Sep 30 2009

Original Post by floggingsully:

My treadmill is by far the best becaue it's a sidewalk.

I beg to differ. :)  Mine is dirt/sand compacted trails in my county forest preserve, and it beats yours hands down, IMO.    MUCH easier on the joints ... and eyes.

I'm 40, and I feel like a grown up.  But that's only settled in the last five years or so.

Fitness Am I normal? Sep 23 2009

Very normal.  The basic concept is built into training schedules with one cutback week each month and tapering before races.  Not breaking (or cutting back) for more than a week isn't beneficial, and not more than one week per month.

Fitness Am I running or Jogging Sep 22 2009

Jogging is running.

But the difference between jogging and other subsets of running (sprinting, for example) vary too much from individual to individal--and for that matter, over time and fitness levels for the SAME individual--to define it by a speed measurement, as the OP inquired about.

That's not to say that a particular group, such as a track team, for example, may not establish that when they say "jog", they mean X min miles.  But as far as a generally accepted speed definition ... no.

I agree, there is no line.  People are too different.  I am short with stubby legs, and there are many people who can walk faster than I can jog. And at the gym, there's this tall, lanky guy whose easy, warm up jog is as fast as my 1/2 mile pace.

I've heard that, technically, if your front foot touches the ground before the back one lifts off the ground, it's walking.  If both are off the ground, it's running.  That leaves a very WIDE range of speed, from person to person.

Fitness Calling all runners!! Aug 27 2009

I wholeheartedly endorse the "run outside" suggestion, and simply changing it up like that may break the mental block, if that's all it is.  But it may be more than that.  I suspect you are probably running too fast.  If running a 12mm pace for 1.5 miles has you breathing hard, then you should probably slow down to a 13mm or slower -- however slow it takes so that you could talk in sentences to someone on the next treadmill.  Running farther, slower, will help you far more than trying to run farther, faster.  It should feel like you are running too slow.

Calorie Count Italian Hot sausages.. Aug 19 2009
15:01 (UTC)

If you really love sausage, and find that you miss it badly, then consider trying a leaner meat that's seasonsed like sausage, such as a turkey sausage, or even a non-meat, soy-based one.  Much less fat and fewer calories.  But if they aren't close enough to the same taste for you (like reduced fat, reduced sugar ice cream, for me) then make the "real stuff" a once a month treat.

Weight Loss Do you vacation from your diet on vacation? Aug 18 2009
16:02 (UTC)
13

I just came back from vacation.  My approach was to eat about 80% healthy and 20% "what I want" (which translated into several deserts and a few glasses of wine) but not to count calories, or even try to approximate them.  I had an active vacation (running and kayaking) which worked up a strong appetite, which I indulged with good quality food.

My initial increase the day after returning (8/17) was about 5 lb.  This morning (8/18), I'm down .8, or 4.2 above when I left.  I'll probably drop another pound or so in the next two days, and I'm guessing my "real" weight gain was 3 pounds in 9 days.  Not great, but very much "worth it".  I had a great vacation, had some wonderful restaurant dinners with dishes I'd never get at home, and which I'll remember fondly as part of the overall vacation.  Totally worth it.

Fitness How accurate are crosstrainer/elliptical calorie burners? Aug 18 2009
15:43 (UTC)

How accurate? Probably not very, unless you just happen to fall into the "average" profile upon which its formulas are based.  But regardless of accuracy, it's still quite helpful as a way of comparing how hard you are working during the workout and from one to another.

Just don't expect to use that number upon which to base your total calorie budget and calorie deficit to obtain the standard one pound loss per week.  If that works, then great, you probably do fall into the average and it's reasonably accurate for you.  If not, you'll have to experiment with different "deficits" for a while, until you find the one that actually produces that 1 pound.  From there, you can probably calculate approx how much the burn really is (assuming that your calorie intake measurements are reasonably accurate.)

Or, just get a good heart rate monitor.  That's a far more accurate.

Indeed, they should.  And they shouldn't stop with fantasy literature, but should explore all genres.  The dumming down of today's writing (at ALL levels of publication, from newspapers to textbooks to pop fiction) is shameful.

Weight Loss Smaller portions not working? Jul 29 2009
15:07 (UTC)

The answer is probably larger portions of the lowest calorie foods--that is VEGGIES (non-starch veggies, to be more precise).

And I don't recommend dried fruits for just general consumption.  You get a LOT more calories for the volume (in otherwords, FULLNESS) compared to fresh fruits.  Dried fruits are great for when you need to reduce volume and have limited or no refridgeration -- ie, a hike.  A road trip.  But generally, fresh fruit will be more effective for comfortable weight management.

Health & Support Exercise and Period Jul 17 2009

I doubt it's your exercise.  Or rather, if it is, it's because you need to eat more, not exercise less.  If you give your height, weight, and frame size, that might help us assess that possibility, but my first guess is that you are still burning as much/more than you're consuming, and your weight and fat % are still insufficient.  Your diet quality sounds fine, it's not just about eating enough fat, but the amount of body fat you have.  If you don't have enough body fat for your body to sustain healthy pregnancy, then your body eliminates the possibility.

Ditto.

I've tried one or two other items, but those two are the only ones that seem as effective as advertisd.  Overpriced?  Perhaps, but if you actually USE them consistently, then worth every penny.

Weight Loss Is my body getting used to walking? Jul 15 2009
20:13 (UTC)

It seems a little early for that, but it will happen.  Inevitably.  I suggest adding some spurts of jogging throughout your walk.  Slow and easy, more a shuffle at first than a jog, and just a minute at a time, until you see how your body takes it.  And assuming it goes ok, gradually increase based on a run/walk program.  Running will burn a lot more calories than walking, even if your "running" is no faster than power walking.

Weight Loss Eating healthy causing one to feel sick when they eat unhealthily Jul 09 2009
17:07 (UTC)
3

It can happen.  That's largely why I've never gone totally off the "unhealthy" stuff.  I don't want to be in a situation where I'm starved, I NEED food, and my only choice is continue starving or eat and be sick.  So I continue to eat some "unhealthy" foods a couple times a month--usually eating out.  Maybe pizza (but rarely--months in between).  Pasta with cream sauce of some sort, another time.  A hamburger with just a handful of fries.  Not large portions, at all.  Just enough to maintain my "immunity", so to speak.  And another benefit being that I don't feel anything is "forbidden" and give it that allure.

The Lounge Your Boring Name--love it or hate it?? Jul 09 2009
16:53 (UTC)

My first name is highly unique: Sharla.  I love it. But unless I spell it out, it always gets written as Charla.  I guess as a combination of Carla and Charlotte.  I never minded it at all when I was single and my last name was the plain, can't be mis-spelled, Jackson.  Sharla Jackson.  Loved it.  And if people mis-spelled Charla, I didn't really care.  Same name.

But then I married.  Short and sweet: Utz.  Pronounced "Uhtz".  (Same as the potato chip company out east--very, very distant relatives, going back somewhere between 150-250 years, most likely).  When you say "Uhtz" it usually gets turned into "Lutz".  Or they can't process it at all, and just stare blankly, or dead silence, on the phone.  But the best is if you spell it out U-T-Z, then it gets prounces back like You-TEEZ-ey.  Cracks me up.

But now, put my two names together, Sharla Utz, and it comes out as first name Charlotte, no last name, every bloody time.  I don't like Charlotte.  At all.  Because of an old lady I knew as a small child, and because really didn't like Charlotte's web.  Hate spiders.  So now I'm doomed to spelling out both names.  Sometimes I wish I'd kept my maiden name.

Motivation Scale = God? Jul 08 2009

I weigh myself every day and record it.  I've been doing so for three years.  No, I've never harbored any suicidal thoughts over gains or fluctuations.  It's just a tool that provides more information the more you use it.  The scale's information gives YOU power, not the scale.

I have an anology for weighing only once a week or so.  A man decided to cross the Atlantic from US to Europe in his yacht.  He got the maps, the GPS, all the doodads, checked his position, and started out.  But then he put all that aside and just kept the boat headed in the general direction of the rising sun.  Every week, he'd check the GPS position and maps, and he was generally closer to Europe than before, but his latitude positions were all over the place, and he fell farther and farther off his schedule.

Let's see ...

Wasn't worth the calories? Pretty much any ordinary chain pizza (Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, Domino's, whatever. ) Seems like I indulge several times a year, and always end up saying "that was SOOOO not worth it".  I think I've finally learned however ... see next.

was indulgent but worth it? Giordano's Chicago style stuffed pizza. I don't even KNOW how many calories, but there's a LOT of cheese, so it's high.  But regardless of what it comes to, totally worth it.  Best pizza on earth.  If I'm going to spend calories on pizza, it won't be anything but Giordano's.

was so good you cant believe only had that many calories? Dove dark chocolate miniatures.

Fitness Obese or just really out of shape? My Couch to 1 mile personal challenge Jun 25 2009
20:21 (UTC)

I couldn't keep up with C25K, either.  I suspect that any overweight, truly sedentary person who was never an althete would have trouble with it.  I was also obese/overweight (right at the borderline) and could do 45 minutes on elliptical, no problem.  I started C25K, but within about 4 weeks, I couldn't keep up.  I started repeating weeks, and I probably could have stayed with that and finished the program, but I got bored, and ended up adapting it to suit me.  It was about 6 months from the time I first started C25K, to when I could actually run a full 5K.  (Pretty slow, but still running.)  Now, I love running.  I'm still about 5 pounds over "normal" weight, but I suspect that will be gone by the time I've finished bringing my weekly base mileage from 14 miles (where it is now) to 20 over the next six weeks.

Fitness Weak ankles? Jun 24 2009
22:26 (UTC)
7

I had "weak" ankles all my life until I started running.  A couple severe sprains as a child led to chronic ankle sprains (90% of the time, from rolling an ankle).  I'd sprain an ankle several times a year, usually once severe enough that I would have to take off work to stay completely off of it.  But I haven't sprained an ankle even ONCE since I started running 15 months ago.  I have rolled my right ankle a little, once or twice, but it didn't sprain.

I'm not saying to go out and run right away.  I was only about 30 pounds overweight when I started running, and I had been exercising with bike and elliptical for almost a year before that, which probably helped my ankles, too.  But I am saying, don't let weak ankles stop you from running.  Strengthen them, along with everything else, and then running will help even more, both in strengthening the muscles in your ankles, but also in strengthening your bones themselves.  Running decreases your risk of osteoporosis later in life, but biking, elliptical, etc do not--not enough impact.  To me, that's a HUGE plus for running, besides just that I LIKE it better.

Foods Question for those of you who are hitting your daily calorie target. Jun 24 2009
15:23 (UTC)
11

I do as someone above suggested – I aim for a range. The planning it would require to hit every macronutrient exactly, in conjunction with the overall calorie target, would border on obsessive-compulsive, I think.  My targets are 25 fat/30 protein/45 carb.  For any particulary day, I’m aiming for a range of 25-30 fat, 25-35 protein, and 40-50 carb.  As long as you’re logging as you eat, it’s not difficult to hit within a range, provided you have a general idea about the macronutrients of various foods and try to include some of each with every meal so that you aren’t too far out of balance at any point.  And then as you get to 75% of your daily calories, you need to eat whatever you are low in, and avoid anything you are high in.  I try to make my overall averages for a week hit closer to my ideal 25/25/50 target, because I don’t want to end up consistently high or low.  But to day, I have a 5-10% range, and that works well for me.  (When I stick to it, that is.)
