Fitness Elliptical trainer calories burned Jun 05 2009

175 sounds right for 30 minutes on an elliptical.  I quit using the elliptical after I got my bodybugg because of how few calories I was burning for the amount of time spent on it.  Jogging on the treadmill is more difficult than the elliptical and I burn approx. 200 calories in about 30 minutes of jogging with warm up and cool down.  I am a 190 lb 5'4 woman so most people would burn even less than me.  The elliptical just doesn't burn very many calories.  Even with a higher resistance level its still too easy compared to jogging.

I have a Bodybugg so I have a pretty accurate idea of what I burn for calories with about the same amount of effort on each machine.

For me the treadmill burns the most, Elliptical next, then stairclimber.  I didn't ride the bikes much, but I didn't burn all that many calories when I did.

Whoever said the Stairclimber isn't worth the few number of calories burned is right.  I couldn't believe how few calories I burned on that thing, probably because it's about impossible to do without hanging on to the handles.

I noticed that the calorie indicators on the machines were pretty accurate for the treadmill and pretty inaccuate for the other machines.  Basically I had to take the number on the elliptical machine and divide by 2 and that was the real number of calories I burned.  Same with the stairclimber.

Also, I learned that sweating is not a very good indicator of calories burned.

While I agree with everyone that your trainer's approach was pretty crappy and you should find a new one; she's probably right about most of what she said.  For your size, you are probably eating too few calories and too little protein so you probably are burning away more muscle than fat when you do cardio.  She's probably also right about the weights as people who have not been taught how to lift weights typically do them wrong (and women especially often lift too light of weights to see results).

I would find a new trainer as it sounds like you could probably use the one on one guidance, but don't be surprised if the new one tells you the same things, just in a nicer way.  By the way, congrats on your progress so far.

Depends on a lot of factors including but not limited to whether or not you hang on to the arm rests and how long you have been doing the ellipitical as a workout.  Considering how long you do it each time and the intensity, I would guess you hang on and your body is very used to it.  In this case, I would estimate maybe half or less of what the machine says.

Do you hang on to the bars of the treadmill at all while you are walking/jogging?  If you do, your calorie burn is probably significantly less than what the machine is telling you.

Also, just because you are eating more fruits and veggies doesn't mean you are automatically going to lose weight.  It's all about calories in vs. calories out.  Your lack of weight loss points to diet issues and not exercise issues.

Average calories/day:  1800-2000; a rare low day would be about 1600, I surplus over my calories burned by a couple hundred at least once a week.  I do use a Bodybugg to help me track calories in/calories burned as accurately as possible.

Starting weight 1/1/07: 225; current weight 177

Height 5'3"1/2; female, 32 years old; overweight my entire life.

I am living proof that you don't have to eat low calorie or even low-fat to lose weight.  I eat probably 70-100 grams of fat a day, 120+ grams of protein and 200ish grams of carbs a day.  I lift heavy weights 2 or 3 times a week, do hard cardio maybe 3 or 4 times a week for 30 minutes or so and that's it.  I have been losing weight at the rate of about 1 lb a week since last May.  I have lost about 8% body fat since starting.  My motto has been slow and steady with slow gradual lifestyle changes and my current eating plan is one I will be able to maintain for the rest of my life.

Most new folks on here seem to set themselves up for failure by either restricting calories too much, working out too much or both.  You have to live a lifestyle you can maintain and eat a diet you can maintain for the rest of your life.

You are working out way too much for your calorie intake.  You should have at least one or two rest days per week, especially with the weight training you are doing.  Your poor body is probably in shock from all the working out and is hanging on to everything it can.

You might want to recheck the personal stats you entered.  Highly unlikely you burned 3000 calories at your height and weight from burning only 400 calories during a workout and then laying around the house the rest of the day.  After burn does burn more calories, but not That many more calories.  I would guess your burn rate for this day is more like 2000 to 2400.

If she has gained that much weight lifting weights, then she is eating over her maintence calories.  If you lift and eat more than you burn, you get bigger and gain mass.  If you lift and eat less than you burn, you don't build much mass, instead you get a more toned appearance as the fat comes off.

I would say she is eating too much.  The lifting aspect is not what's hurting her, its the diet.  If she was in a calorie deficit, the scale might not be changing much at all, but she would be dropping fat and looking more toned.

If you can do the stairmaster for 45 minutes without touching the handles at all and if you can program in age/weight then the machine count will probably be much closer to reality.

I have a Bodybugg that calculates calories burned for me.  The stairclimber machines are the worst for accuracy, with me usually burning about half the calories the machine says I burn.  My guess would be because it is about impossible to do the stairclimber without hanging on to the handles, which significantly reduces your calories burned on any cardio equipment.

Since I discovered this, I now mostly do jogging/running on the treadmill for cardio.  Burns a lot more calories than the stairmaster.

I have a BodyBugg and love it.  It is the first tool I've ever used that has actually helped me to lose weight and losing weight has actually been easy.  It is great for people who can't figure out how to calculate their daily deficit (or people like me who don't want to enter every little daily activity into an online calculator to try and figure out what they have burned).  It seems to be pretty accurate on calculating my calories burned.  It also keeps track of your deficits over time, changes in weight and measurements, etc.

My cost was $250 for the bugg through 24 hour fitness and $100 per year for the subscription.  Not all that expensive in my book, especially considering a good heart rate monitor is probably $100 and the Bugg will be more accurate.

YMMV, but this tool was the answer I needed to my weight issues and finally helped me to understand calories in vs. calories out and why I have never been able to lose much weight or be able to keep it off.

How do you know your RMR was only 900 last weekend?  Your real RMR is probably at least 1200 calories.  The reason you are gaining weight is probably because you are exercising too much for your calorie intake and your body thinks it is starving and hanging onto everything it can.

You are eating almost all your calories as simple carbs.  As you have discovered, simple carbs do not leave you feeling full for very long.  You need to replace out most of these carbs with a lot more protein, healthy fats and complex carbs or you will always be starving.  Drop the pop tarts, tortillas and the honey comb cereal and replace them with high fiber, high protein foods.
Weight Loss Question about Body Fat Percentage? Feb 11 2008

A pretty good indication of whether your body fat percentage is too low is whether or not you still have regular monthly cycles.  If your cycle is fine, then your body fat is nothing to worry about.  Besides, those scales are very inaccurate and can be off by as much as 8 to 10 percentage points.

I think the information in the main article is good and I would say he is right about most of it.  Pretty much every picture I see of someone complaining about lose skin still has a bunch of fat under that skin, whether they believe it or not.

I think his Hollywood celebrity numbers are all about 5 to 10% too low.  If Terry Hatcher really had 5% body fat she would look like a concentration camp survivor.  Basically it is very hard for a woman to be under about 10% body fat and even still look like a woman.

Fitness 20% body fat but only 103 pounds. Jan 28 2008

As I mentioned before, there is nothing wrong with 20%  body fat for a woman.  In spite of what people are telling you here, it is not at all an unhealthy level of fat for a women, it is on the high range of athletic and is certainly not low enough to cause you any health problems.  You will know if your body fat percentage is too low because your period will stop.  Some women will lose it at 17-18%, some much lower than that.

The best way for you to get your body fat lower is as you have already mentioned, build more muscle.  You can do this by resistance training with as heavy of weights as you can lift for 3 x 12 sets and by eating a diet high in protein and healthy carbs.

I am a woman and I would never go to a women's only gym as I think they are overpriced and have subpar equipment.  I see all kinds of male and female body types in my gym, from very obese down to hot young things.  Unless you are wearing something very revealing or something VERY unflattering to your body type, no one is going to pay much attention to you.

I've never understood why women seem to have such a problem with co-ed gyms.  Women are way more critical of other women then men will ever be.  Men will not stare any more at you in the gym than they would on the street.  I use the weight room at my gym all the time and I think the men spend more time checking out what other men are lifting than than they spend looking at the women.

Weight Loss Is it possible that my body is rejecting weight loss? Jan 25 2008

It sounds like what you need to do is build more muscle; that will help tone you up and help get rid of the fat causing the "jiggle".  Are you doing resistance training that is actually challenging your muscles?  You also likely have too low of calories.  What's your diet like?

You're not fat, but you're not quite slim yet either.  I can't comment on your friends because we all carry weight differently.  Very few women would look thin at 5'5" and 143.  It's not a bad weight, but the ideal for that height would be around 120.  You've made it most of the way there.  You look great and you must feel better, right?

is this guy on something? you look great, and you're at a healthy weight. 120 and you'd be slightly underweight. don't let his comments be the only ones that stick in your head. he's wrong, wrong, wrong!!!!!

People are often confused by weight and tend to way underestimate what people should weight at certain heights.  The only women that would look good at 120 and 5'5 are small boned.

It sounds like you lost an average of about 3 pounds a week.  With that fast of weight loss, you probably lost a lot of muscle in that 100 pounds.  With all that muscle loss, you probably still have a higher percentage of body fat than your friends of the same weight.  Eating a high protein diet combined with heavy weight training will help tone you up significantly and cut down your body fat percentage.

Your experience is why I would always advise people to lose only 1 to 2 pounds per week and always include resistance/weight training as a part of any weight loss plan.  It is much easier to try to keep muscle than to try to build it back later.  Losing weight more slowly also helps reduce loose skin issues.

140 pounds is a good weight for 5'5, you just need to add muscle and lower your body fat.

20% is a great body fat percentage for a woman if you really are 20%. To give you an idea of how to guage just by looking at yourself whether you really are 20% is if you have any jiggly or soft areas on your body. If you have much of any jiggle/fat you can grab on your stomach, hips, or thighs, you probably are higher than 20%.

Also, do you have any visible muscle tone? If you really are 20%, you will probably have some visible muscle tone in your upper arms and legs, but you would not be at all ripped at 20%.
Weight Loss Im so freaking sick of being hungry Jan 23 2008

eat more protein and fat and less of your calories from carbs.  I am betting all the people posting on this thread about being hungry are getting almost all their calories from carbs.  This does not work unless you enjoy constant being starving.

My calories are 30% protein, 30 to 40% fat and 30 to 40% carb.  Many people on this site will probably tell you that's too high of a fat percentage, but I am able to eat the number of calories per day that I need to eat and am almost never hungry except at mealtimes.  I am having no problems having the energy to work out and lose weight with these percentages.  Utimately, losing weight is all about calories in vs. calories out.

Weight Loss Breast Size and Weight Loss Jan 21 2008

From what I have read, whether you will lose breast size during weight loss and how much is determined by what type of tissue is in them.  If they are made mostly of fat, you will lose more of them; if they are made of more fiberous tissue, you will lose less of them.

For some people, the breast is the first place they lose, for others its the last place.  For me, for better or for worse, the breasts seem to be the last place I lose.  I have lost over 40 pounds in the last year and only went from a 44 DDD to a 42 DD so not much of it came from my chest.  I also have breasts made up of a lot of tissue and not as much fat.

Fitness Does the elliptical really burn so many calories? Jan 20 2008

I find that ellipticals tend to way overstate the number of calories burned.  I have a bodybugg so I have a good way to doublecheck machine numbers.  I find that ellipticals and stairmasters tend to overestimate calories burned, basically I have to multiply the machine number by .66 to get the numbers really burned.  Huge difference!  And I get the inaccurate numbers even when I am able to enter my age/weight/gender/etc. into the machine.

On the other hand, I find that treadmills for me tend to be either right on or slightly underestimate the calories burned.  Kind of weird, but that's one of the reasons I got a bodybugg, so I would know for sure.

Giajacobs,  you are eating way too few calories for your level of exercise.  Your metabolism is probably hardly working at all anymore.  If you are not able to up your calories any, you should at least quit cardio for awhile so you don't do more damage to your body then you already have.  If your period has stopped, you are doing serious possible permanent damage to your bones and other body organs.
