Foods Healthy foods that don't make you feel full? Nov 22 2008

peanut butter. seriously, one tablespoon isn't a lot of food at all, and at 100 calories a pop, it's also loaded with protein, so that should help you a LOT! same goes for snacking on nuts, cubes of cheese, glasses of milk, if you can stomach eating deli meat plain (sometimes this means a lot of salt and nitrates so be careful what you buy)... these are all things my boyfriend eats a lot of when he's lifting a lot and trying to build muscle and they've definitely worked for him! good luck :-)

Weight Loss Healthy foods on my senior trip? Jun 02 2008

thanks for the suggestions... all excellent ones I'll remember for the future. what I should have mentioned in the post is that whatever healthy choices I'm making need to be extremely subtle, since I'm in high school and my friends are absolutely RUTHLESS... you wouldn't believe how I've been mocked in the past for being on a "diet", much less a permanent life change to eat healthfully... so I try to make it as subtle as possible to avoid the comments. So I guess my REAL question is, how can I keep my diet relatively low-cal/healthy without it being so obvious that I get mocked for it?

Not worth it to try and help them accept that, btw... I'm starting college soon :-)

I just have to say... you are super lucky you have the lifestyle to accomodate that kind of intense planning. I always want to but I have too much else going on to plan everything quite so perfectly. I'm jealous ;-D

I dunno if you have this chain near you, but we have a Sun Tan City near me and you can get a basic unlimited tanning package for a little less than $19.00 per month. and they are having this huge sale thing right now so it's a good time to start up a membership. I just did like, two weeks ago for my prom tonight and I already have an amazing tan!

Weight Loss Need More Protein!!! May 23 2008

I had this problem too! my magic solution:

GNC Pro-Performance 100% Whey Protein

It's a chocolatey protein powder, I mix it with 1.5 cups milk and have that for breakfast, sometimes with a banana or a piece of toast if I'm really hungry (I'm one of the few wierdos who wakes up hungry) Anyway it's great because I don't have time to whip up eggs in the morning... This gives me 30+ grams of protein each morning with about two seconds of effort, keeps me full for a good 3-4 hours. It's been my savior :-)

Weight Loss Help me help my man......... May 22 2008
21:34 (UTC)

I have to tell you, a team effort is the best way to lose weight...

My boyfriend and I have been together also for 2+ years and weight loss/fitness has always been an issue with us... he was borderline obese when we met, now two years later he is doing some small scale modeling to help pay for college!

He's not a strict diet kind of guy either.... what he did (and he swears by this method, he lost 65 lbs and then gained 12 back in almost all muscle, looks AMAZING now) is super simple, really won't even change lifestyle all that much:

run 1 mile every day (this would take 15 minutes at most)

do some small weight training (he has some weights at home, a small bar and those round weights you can stack on, plus two dumbells etc.)

cut OUT whole sodas and desserts

cut BACK other junk food (fries/chips/candy etc.) to small portion sizes

eat more protein (keeps you full/men like meat, lol)

AND.... my boyfriend's magic trick that he claims helped more than anything else...

ARIZONA DIET GREEN TEA.

He says all he had to do was pull the jug out of the fridge after a quick run (10 minutes maybe?) and chug some down, or replace sodas with it.... he lost all that weight in 7-8 months and he swears this helped more than anything.

Tiny little changes add up fast, and once you get out of that "comfort" routine you'll see the weight come flying off :-)

Of course, now my boyfriend and I are really into it and we exchange diet/fitness tips with each other... when he's home from college we carpool to the gym and GNc together... make it a goal that you share and it becomes surprisingly fun!

Weight Loss Slim Fast! May 22 2008
18:43 (UTC)

I used to use slimfast (I likewise am 5'7", started at 159 lbs) and I decided they didn't keep me full for hour hours like they say... THEN I started mixing a scoop of GNC Pro-Performance 100% Whey Protein in with 1.5 cups of milk to replace those slimfasts... I find they keep me fuller longer and help me get the right amount of protein :-) you might try that!

Weight Loss Getting back on track.. but GAINING weight? May 19 2008
03:56 (UTC)

hey, the same thing happened to me... without boring you with details about my experience, I'll just say that when I got back on the wagon and took a new approach to weight loss after a few months at plateau-ing, I gained back about 4 pounds.

And then magically, a week or so ago, 5 pounds magically dropped off.

Our bodies are wierd... just do what you're doing now and know that as long as you are being healthy and burning more calories than you take in, you'll lose it eventually :-)

my boyfriend lost 65 lbs in about 7 months by running a mile a day and doing some weight training.... he bought a small bar and a few weights, did some light lifting every day in his living room, and got in fantastic shape, and lost all that weight (he was watching what he ate too, LOTS of protein and green tea, btw... he swears by it for guys). so don't lose hope yet! best of luck to you :-)

Weight Loss 5'6 goals? May 19 2008
03:49 (UTC)

140 is awesome! that was my original goal (I'm 5' 6.5", and I started at 159.5 lbs). Now that I'm kinda close to my goal (140) I've knocked my goal down another 5 lbs because I think I'd look fine with another 5 lbs gone... so my goal is now 135 but ORIGINALLY it WAS 140! SO best of luck to you :-)

Weight Loss Recovered Binge Eater Starting to Backslide... Help. May 15 2008
21:15 (UTC)
me too... You need to find out what you love doing that will REALLY distract you. For me, it's stupid trashy chick-lit novels (gossip girl, the A-list, bergdorf blondes, the eclipse series, you know the type!) which I can get totally absorbed in and then not eat.

Some people say taking a walk or breathing deeply makes cravings go away, have a small piece of fruit, blah blah.... in my opinion, that's a load of BS from people who've never experienced that kind of intensity of cravings (although they mean well!) people who truly have overwhelming binge-cravings won't be satisfied by those things. Find something you absolutely LOVE to do that you'll be totally immersed in to distract you! if nothing else... just drive to the gym/go wherever you go to work out and get FAAAR away from the food, take a shower, go try on clothes that are too small that you're trying to fit into, if you have a boyfriend or girlfriend or whatever, go hang out with them, even get on the phone and chat with somebody... do anything that's too all-consuming for you to be able to do that and eat at once. those are all things I've tried that work for me :-)

Good luck fighting those crazy urges! the longer you stay away, the easier it becomes :-D
Fitness I Hate My Butt!!!!! May 15 2008
02:52 (UTC)
12

despite the haters here ;-D I have to say.... pilates have done wonders for me, and they may for you, too, PROVIDED you're using an intense session/DVD. No wimpy stuff! and GOOD pilates DVDs use resistance training and stretching and a bit of cardio.... the 10-minute solutions videos with Lara Hudson worked wonders for me (and I'm a competitive high school cross country runner who previously did intense cardio workouts and weight training, SO THERE). they're DVD's made up of ten minute workout segments that target different muscle groups... now ten minutes a day won't do much for you, but if you combine all 5 into an hour workout or so, you'll see amazing results.... it helps your balance, posture, and general flexibility so you will look more slender, in addition to TONING instead of building up bulky muscle under fat... it definitely shrank my "muffin-top" considerably!

Good luck to you! and to the haters.... don't knock it until you try it, the RIGHT way :-D

Weight Loss How long have YOU been on a diet/watching your weight? May 13 2008
02:40 (UTC)

I've been doing it since I was about 8 years old and couldn't join my catholic elementary school's irish step-dancing team because I wasn't thin enough. that was scarring.

And I'm just now 18, but I've been on and off diets for a decade. That's so depressing but essentially unless I exercise super consistently and eat almost no junk food, REALLY watch my calories and all that... I am chubby. It sucks.

I know I weighed myself a lot when I was younger... I don't remember specific numbers but I know at 14 years old I was 5'7" and weighed around 149 maybe? and then in the second half of 8th grade I started watching what I eat REALLY carefully and then joined my high school's cross country team in 9th grade... got down to about 136 pounds then.... then had a really stressful first year of high school, went up to about 147.... then got sick and traveled to italy, met a new boyfriend in sophmore year, got down to around 140.... stayed with him, had a very stressful junior year of high school, skyrocketed to 159 (satill 5'7" the whole time, btw) and now, end of senior year, after 9 months of fighting, I'm down to 145... doing everything I can to just get to 135 and maintain.

It's so unfair to be young and have to care so much to look good, when other people our age can eat junk food all day and night and be pencil thin (yeah, yeah, they're not as healthy... I'm a superficial teenager, what do I care?)

yo-yoing weight can contribute to PCOS and other hormonal disorders that can mess up your cycle... my doctor had me go on the pill just to sync up my cycle and now I'm normal. you can go to planned parenthood and get the pill for like a $5 donation, they might even be able to give you a free exam if you want that. good luck :-)

Weight Loss Skinny Tea? May 13 2008
00:53 (UTC)
this is gross, but just a word of warning...

I've tried a couple different "skinny" teas, they're mostly diuretics or "metabolism boosters", etc... in any case, I don't mean to be preachy because they do help sometimes, just be careful because in my experience with one tea it made me very backed up, if you know what I mean... and it took a few weeks for my digestive system to right itself... just be careful :-)
Weight Loss I have a weird complaint... May 07 2008

my boyfriend has always been that way... at a certain point though, it was clear that I was actually gaining, looking worse, and we both knew it... even though I believe he thinks I am beautiful no matter what, there's room for improvement.

What I did is I got my boyfriend on board with me. I think he was feeling insecure because he lost 65 lbs when we started dating to "keep up with me" as he put it... silly boy, thinks I'm the better looking one... and when I wanted to try to look better, it made him nervous. anyway what we did is we decided that if I wanted to lose a few pounds, he could try to eat healthier and maintain his weight but replace fat with muscle, so we started eating healthy together, going grocery shopping together (we don't live together, btw, actually he goes to NYU and I'm in Maine) and we joined a gym together so we could encourage each other to go more often and sort of act like cheerleaders for each other during workouts... as a result, we actually got even closer, both started looking AND feeling better, and I was happy because I felt better about myself and he could be honest with me about how he felt about my appearance because we both knew how hard we were trying to improve ourselves. We've been at it since december and it's done wonders for our relationship, in MANY ways*wink wink*

Plus, in any scenario, there's nothing like a dedicated buddy to help you get in shape! best of luck :-)

Weight Loss so what the heck CAN I eat??? May 07 2008
21:13 (UTC)

haha I love green beans actually, probably more than grapes... but I can throw grapes in a bag and eat them when I'm driving to work or on break during a shift... see my dilemma? I need fast finger foods that I can grab and go because I'm never at home. I want veggies and protein that I don't have to cook, and I have to be careful with nuts because I love them so much that I usually eat waaaay more than I need.

p.s. I definitely exercise... I WAS a distance runner but now I mostly jog to cover my cardio for the day (like 30 minutes at like 11 minute mile? 12 maybe? that's a light jog for me since I used to race, even though I wasn't very fast then) and I do about an hour of pilates a day, I have a couple different dvd's I like to mix up :-) Also my daily deficit is usually between 500-1000 but never under 1200. I typically burn around 2600 with school and working at the Gap and then exercising, and I eat around 1600. so yeah... I think I'm pretty good on that front :-)

thanks for all your ideas so far.... more ideas are always appreciated!
Weight Loss 6 weeks and no results??!! May 07 2008

I don't have a solution for you, only all my sympathy... I've had the exact same problem... I lost 18 pounds between august and december last year... then I gained back 7 and I've been trying to get back on track for several weeks and I'm not seeing ANY positive results.... don't give up :-) I just keep telling myself that hopefully something will happen eventually, and if nothing else at least I'm staying healthy!

Granted, even that doesn't make me feel CLOSE to as good as seeing the numbers on the scale drop.....

Best of luck :-)

OMG YESSSS!!! I actually have more trouble in between school and when I leave for work (between 2-5 pm) because I always end up eating WAAAY more than I need to but I'm going to use this forum anyway since it will probably help... it's not like nighttime eating is all that easy to avoid either!

Great idea :-)

hershey makes these little 100 calorie pack type things in their different candy flavors... I love the reeses one, it has PB chips, a few reeses pieces, sweetened oat squares, and some PB/chocolate cereal bits. you can eat it really slow and it makes me feel like I'm having candy! also don't forget dark chocolate... a hershey's special dark mini bar (you know the tiny ones, like an inch long) or one hershey kiss can be just enough to cure a craving, as long as you know you can stop!

Weight Loss Television = Evil? May 01 2008

I don't really watch tv.... except for movies (I am a film student, after all...) and political news on MSNBC. my treadmill is next to the TV in my basement and I watch hardball with chris matthews and countdown with keith olbermann while I'm jogging. to be honest, if I didn't have that to distract me when the weather is horrible (75% of the year, here in Maine) I could not deal with running at all. and I need my cardio! :-)

champion sportswear makes great, inexpensive, good quality women's workout clothing in all different shapes and sizes and fits... they have spandex outfits for those who are made of muscle and want to show it off.... and nice comfy loose things that make working out easy and comfortable for those of us who have a ways to go :-)

Fitness Has anyone done the 10 minute body dvds? Apr 29 2008
03:07 (UTC)

they are the BEST THING EVER!!!!! honestly, I use the pilates ones with Lara Hudson, they are perfect for making up an hour long workout or just 10 or 20 minutes if I am pressed for time... they are designed to be kind of high intensity so if you don't have a lot of time to work out, you can still reap SOME benefits instead of not exercising at all. I can't tell you what wonders these DVD's worked on my body, not even four years of cross country workouts made me look as slim and toned! my boyfriend was ecstatic, I felt wonderful, my clothes fit better than ever.... I can't say enough positive things about these DVD's, if you can stick to it and make up a routine for yourself, you will never regret it! best of luck!

Motivation Ways to avoid eating because you're stressed? Mar 13 2008
00:05 (UTC)
11

This is a tough question to answer!!! Different things work for different people, so what I do might not work for you, but you can try it anyway:

1) WALK. Just walking around inside, walking on a treadmill (if you have one at home) or outside (if you live where it's warm) for 5-10 minutes can clear out your head and help you get over a craving. Plus you'll burn a few extra calories, which is always nice :-)
2) Drink water. If you hate water, try tea. If you hate tea, try coffee with skim milk and as little sweetener as you can take. If you don't like that, you might try sparkling water, some kind of calorie free drink mix (crystal light or something) or even diet soda. Also, popping a piece of sugarfree chewing gum or a mint or a small hard candy might help. It all depends on what you like, but all those can help.
3) Breathe. This one never works for me, but apparently stopping to concentrate on taking a few deep breaths can really clear your head. I usually just end up thinking about what I want to eat and that doesn't help anything, but you can try it!
4) Find something to distract yourself. Read something, get online and post something here, read the news, turn on the TV, paint your nails, call a friend, play solitaire, whatever... just a quick quiet activity that takes your focus off whatever is stressing you out and whatever craving you are trying to ignore can help.
5) Step on a scale. If you have to look at your weight, you're going to remember why you don't want to munch for the wrong reasons. Seeing that number always guilts me out of ANY craving!

I hope this helps!!!  This is the single hardest thing I have to deal with in losing weight so GOOD LUCK! I know how hard it can be!

Foods What's SO bad about sugar? Mar 12 2008

wow lots of great answers!!! thanks everyone :-) I think all the milk I drink and all the fruit and cereal I eat are what's making my sugars seem so high. I don't think I really eat all that much added sugar so I'm going to assume I'm okay :-)

Thanks again!

Weight Loss "Negative Calories"? Mar 12 2008
23:50 (UTC)
6

Actually, I tried doing the negative-calorie diet in a sort of half-way fashion ealier this year and it worked wonderfully! the only thing is, I wouldn't suggest eating ONLY those foods or even just MOSTLY those foods... When I was eating mostly the foods on the list, I would feel full but I would get headaches/lightheadedness as if I weren't eating at all, which makes me think maybe the idea that they burn more calories when you digest them than they provide might actually be true. They're all really healthy low-cal foods anyway, but all I know is, it worked for me! just make sure you have some other stuff with it (cereal and milk, low fat dairy, some healthy fats here and there) to keep you from feeling like you're not eating enough!

Good luck! Let me know how things work out for you!
