Which is, essentially, exactly what I was getting at. No one on here IS a doctor, or knows anything about calories other than what they have personally experienced or read, so why everyone is so quick to jump to the conclusion that I am "majorly disorded" is beyond me. I mean, if someone came on here saying 'omg I've stopped eating mcdonalds every day and I've lose 10 pounds, I'm down to 2000 calories!' you'd all congratulate them. But then I simply say that I eat way less than that, and am perfectly fine and happy with myself, and am probably a lot closer to the goal that many of the people here are trying to get to, and it's completely different.

I mean, you all can make sure that the bigger people feel loved and supported, but skinnier people, who usually deal with just as much criticism as heavier people, are treated like idiots.

Self esteem, for chrissakes. you just can't win, eh?

Ironically, you have no idea how much I agree with parts of this.  I have a huge issue with the way we label people who are thin, or who have issues with food that are on the thin side.  We never do that with people who have issues with food that are on the not-so-thin side.

BUT - the problem is if you want us to say it's ok to eat less than 1200, or significantly more for a teen.  We just cannot.  I do not think anyone has the right to say you are 'majorly disordered'.  Or to treat you like you are an idiot.  But I also do not think you have the right to tell people it's ok to eat what amounts to a starvation diet.  :/

I promise I'm not trying to pick on you!  But we all have to come to terms at some point with the fact that there will be more support for people who are overweight and are trying to lose weight than there are for people who are not overweight and are trying to lose weight.  Also, you pretty much won't find any support at all here for people who are underweight and are trying to lose weight.  And that is a good thing.  It's not a good thing for people to make others feel bad just because they can - but it's a good thing to not support something unhealthy.

Supporting someone who is underweight and wants to lose is just like supporting someone who is overweight and wants to gain.  You won't find either on this board.

You will find support for those who are underweight and want to gain, however.  If you are naturally underweight and want to maintain, you'll get a mixed welcome.  If you are underweight because you dieted down to get underweight and you want to maintain, you'll probably be told you need to gain something back.

It's just the way it is.

But you are right - no one should say anything in a degrading, derogatory way regardless of what the situation is.

Well finally someone sees my POV. And yes, I understand what you're saying; I wouldn't suggest that anyone here try to recreate my diet, and thats certainly not what I was trying to do (sorry if it came off like that!). All I'm trying to point out is that things you read here need to be taken with a grain of salt, so to speak, whats true for some is not true for all.

And I know you weren't really picking on me, it just majorly pisses me off when people treat me a certain way because of my body type. It's so tiresome to be called "the skinny girl" or be told that I don't eat. It all comes down to other peoples self esteem issues, I guess, but god its annoying to lose a friend because they can't stand to eat when they're near you! People think they're handing you some big compliment to lament about themselves and then go on to say "well, it's not like you'd KNOW, or anything". And its especially bad when ignorant people around you really treat it like you're anorexic. Friends trying to shove food down your throat is never fun. :(

But thanks for hearing me out I guess. :)

Quote from nicowalls3

"healthy" is not only about how you look. "healthy" is about giving your body vitamins and nutrients and all of that stuff that keeps you alive. it's not only about the calories. i really doubt that at 300 calories your body is getting what it needs in terms of nutrients. i think that the longer you keep your body deprived of all that, the worse you're going to look.

Where in the world you got the impression that I only eat 300 calories per day is beyond me, nor did I ever say that "healthy" is purely derived from appearances. But thanks for reitterating what I've already stated. Undecided

Quote from revolution3

"Nothing you can do about it? Unless you have a serious mental disorder [e.g. anorexia nervosa] there IS something you can do about it, and that's eating more. And really, eating more doesn't necessarily mean gaining weight if you're already undereating."

My problem with this idea is quite large. First of all, why I would want to eat more when I'm happy now I'm not really sure. Secondly, why everyone here thinks that eating more translates into less is confusing to meat best. I mean (I am not supporting anorexia by saying this!) at some point you eat less, you LOSE, right? And thirdly, there IS nothing I can do about it, what else can I eat? Bigger portions, more frequent eating, or just more all around eating? I eat until I'm full, so none of those really work, unless you're suggesting I give myself a stomachache full of food everytime I eat.

Calories or not, it really all comes down to the person, their metabolism, and their genetics. Saying that 1800 is good for ALL teens is ridiculous, like I've stated before, I eat less than that, and get along perfectly fine. Other people eat upwards of 2000, and are likewise perfect.

Unfortunately, none of the rest of us can agree with you.  We aren't your physician, we have no idea whether you are healthy or not.  You are a relatively nameless, faceless person on the internet.  That's why, whether you will take what is being told to you as the truth or not, we have to advise that it's unhealthy to eat such a low amount of calories.  :(

Which is, essentially, exactly what I was getting at. i wouldn't say it's "mega disordered eating" but she does restrict too much.

twiggy_twangdoodles you're at a normal weight but you need to try to eat more calories. at 6 feet tall there is no way that 1200 is enough for you, even if you're trying to lose.

Ok, so I get what you're trying to say, however I have never, throughout my entire life (i'm 17), eaten anywhere near what is considered "healthy". I've always been naturally thin, and on top of that, I'm incredibly picky, so that puts foods like vegetables right out of my eating plan. And although I am not trying to lose currently (and have only thought about it briefly) 1200 is obviously enough, its what I exist on!

I must agree with musicismysavior5: 1800 is a ridiculous number of calories for me to be eating every day. I can't even imagine what else I could eat to put it up to that number, unless I planned on eating 3 bags of potato chips. lol.

Calories or not, it really all comes down to the person, their metabolism, and their genetics. Saying that 1800 is good for ALL teens is ridiculous, like I've stated before, I eat less than that, and get along perfectly fine. Other people eat upwards of 2000, and are likewise perfect.

I am perfectly aware of the health problems that can arrise from this type of thing, however there is nothing I can do about it. I do not have an eating disorder, I LOVE how I look, and would rather be skinny than "healthy" (as you so call it) any day.

Young Calorie Counters calories and weight loss question Dec 12 2007

Ok, the 130 wasn't completely accurate (sorry!) which is why I added that it was more likely for me to become 135. And I didn't mean that I wanted to drop from 1200 to 970, (I wouldn't even know how to do that lol) I meant that in general, before I even started wanting to lose a bit of weight, that 970 to probably around 1100 calories is normal for me, and I have never ever been someone who eats anywhere near 2000 a day (unless its a holiday or something :) ).

So, to clarify, the question I was trying to ask was: if the information here is telling me to consume about 1600, is that assuming that I eat MORE than 1600? and that I should go down in calories? b/c like I said, I don't even eat anywhere near that. So, the make my point: should I go down relative to my average?

or am I totally getting it wrong, and when they say 1600, does that mean go up?

*argh!*

sorry if I'm confusing anyone. and yes, I know that going down to that weight would make me quite skinny, however I want to get into modeling (I certainly have the height!) so that wouldn't be that bad. I just want to do it the healthiest way I can, I guess.

I'm 6'0" and around 143 lbs (not 100% sure)

I walk vigorously for at least 20 mins every night (with occasional exceptions, but few) and if I have time/patience I'll get around to doing anywhere from 50-75 sit ups, maybe a few leg exercises, and arm exercises. But the walking is the only thing I do consistantly as of now. I'll probably step it up as summer gets closer (bikini season, amirite? ;) )

As for calories, on a normal day, they're somewhere inbetween 950 and 1200.

I don't really like to think of being on a "diet" because it kinda gives you pressure. So I think of it more as eating only what is really necessary, with maybe one or two small treats thrown in so I don't go insane. Usually I just keep this idea in the back of my head whenever I eat, so I can make better decisions, plus, then I get to decide if I should allow myself a candy bar or not.

Bonjour to all the french speakers: My name's Shana, I live in california, I'm 17 and coincidentally (or not, I guess!) I just started learnng french this year.

Anyways, I weigh about 143 lbs (not really sure, I don't own a scale), but I'm 6 foot, so thats a normal weight I guess. I've always been skinnier than most people, but now I'm just looking for a way to lose some fat and tone up, and not as flabby (lol). So I joined the site out of curiosity, and maybe as a way to help myself out.

I watched the victoria's secret fashion show a couple days ago and was SO inspired/motivated to start working out; those girls have amazing bodies! Plus I'm interested in getting into modeling, so thats a good place to get inspiration from, I guess.

So that's pretty much it. :) Au revoir! ~Shana
