Because of the misalignment of your spine, hips and neck, I would suggest seeing a physical therapist if possible for an exercise routine. This is the only way I can think of that doesn't risk doing more injury because they can develop a program centered around your specific problems. Be careful and take care.

I have a disabled child. As such, I have no idea if my child will be able to develop independence. If he fails at that, I will hope to be healthy enough to take care of him and out live him by a day so that he will be assured proper care and love. That is the real reason I am trying to stay fit.

If I were to become a liability...not being able to take care of myself...and also a financial drain on my family...I am not sure I'd want to live that way considering my child will need those resources for his own life.

I have no idea at what age I will start going down hill. My great grandparents lived to be in their late 90s/early 100s ...my grandparents all died in their 70s. I hope I make it to my 80s in good health. It'd be great to make it to the 90s with the same vitality. I think the journey will definitely be emotional - I need my husband by my side. He is my very best friend and therefore, he needs to live with the same vitality that I have as long as me Tongue out

Weight Loss The emotions of weight loss May 11 2009

I have many emotions about weight loss too...here are the negative ones that I am dealing with:

1. Anger - me234 you could not have said it better. I am so angry at myself for not realizing and for getting so big. I am angry that I didn't take action sooner.

2. sadness...Loss of innocence...I feel very sad about the loss of innocence in not knowing the amount of calories in my favorite restaurant meals. Now I rarely enjoy a meal knowing how many calories are involved make eating MUCH less pleasurable. I am angry about that loss of innocence as well.

3. Fear - that I may never be able to loose enough to make myself happy.

4. Frustration - my whole weight loss drama has been one big plateau after another it has been very frustrating. I am also frustrated about the amount of time that its taking to lose the weight.

5. obsession...I think about food all the time now. On Sunday it is plan meals for the week and cook. On every day of the rest of the week it is always being obsessed about not going over the calorie goal.

6. Embarrasment - enough said. I am embarrased by my side...I am disgusted by the way I looked when I saw my ..."ah ha"....Wow! I am that BIG picture.

Weight Loss Is this too much exercise? May 08 2009

Common recommendations are that to loose weight you have to exercise about 1 hour a day most days of the week. However, that advice also states that you start slow and work your way up to this. It looks like you are doing about 50 minutes 2 times a day 7 days a week. That may lead to an injury as you state you are just starting out. However, the very best person to ask is your doctor. I am not sure anyone who hasn't assessed your fittness would be qualified to say whether or not this is too much. Right now it seems you are able to endure this and you didn't mention any injuries so it could be fine for you. My gut says that you are doing too much because you aren't taking a rest day. The other part of me says ...WAHOOOO you are able to do 1 hour 40 mintues of exercise a day you go but seriously it could lead to an injury that could put you out of commission for 6 weeks ....yep I did the same thing when I first started out [like you I wanted to loose as quick as possible and figured more exercise=more weight loss] and ended up with a foot injury that was so painful that I couldn't hardly walk for 6 weeks. After 20 months of working out (minus the 6 weeks), I can do the longer workouts on most days of the week. So just be careful and consult your doctor to find out what is recommended for you.

Foods How do I get enough dairy when I dont like milk? May 07 2009
19:30 (UTC)

I drink at least one cup of orange juice a day and since that is how I am meeting my servings of fruit for the day, I buy the orange juice that is foritfied with Calcuim and vitamin D.

In addition, there are some cereal bars out there that help you meet your dietary requirement for fiber that also add calcium and some of those are pretty tasty.

Both of these options are high in calories. If you want the low cal versions I think you are stuck with green leafy veggies and broccoli, tofu, soy beans and calcuim supplements.  But I thought I would throw those out as additional options that are eaten in order to meet other dietary requirements that just so happen to also contain calcium.

Fitness Is this "Work Out Burnout"? May 07 2009
14:29 (UTC)
2

I completely understand. I have been doing 40 minutes of cardio during the day (my workplace has a gym so I take advantage of that at work) pretty much 5 days a week followed by fitness training sessions which involve circuit training 3 days a week and on the days I go to the trainer I also do an extra 30-35 minute cardio before my session. I forgot to mention,  we are clearing our property on Saturday and Sunday which involves rolling large chunks of tree (35-50 lbs per chunk) uphill and stacking them along with pulling vines out of trees and chopping undergrowth.

Like you I am exhausted, so I have cut out the cardio at work this week but plan to pick that back up next week. I think we all need a break from working out at some point.

Enjoy a day or 2 away from the gym that doesn't mean you have to quit moving...just walk for pleasure rather than for intensity ...actually look around the neighborhood as you walk for things you've never seen before.

Fitness Which excercise is the most intense calorie burner? May 06 2009

Calorie count has an activity browser which ESTIMATES the amount of calories you'd burn doing various different things. You can find that here: http://caloriecount.about.com/activities-spor ts-ac15.

According to this estimator here is what the activities you mention burn per hour: (please notice that I give 2 entries for each...one should be a much higher perceived exertion than the other). If you compare the same intensity exercises with each other you should get an idea of what burns more calories.

Hope this helps:

Biking:

Bicycling - 14-15.9 Mph, Racing or Leisure, Fast, Vigorous Effort 560 calories per hour

Bicycling - <10 Mph, Leisure, To Work or for Pleasure 224 calories per hour

Running:

Running - 8 mph (7.5 Min/mile) 756 calories per hour

Jogging - General 392 calories per hour

Swimming:

Swimming - Crawl, Fast (75 Yards/minute), Vigorous Effort 616 calories per hour

Swimming Laps - Freestyle, Slow, Moderate or Light Effort 392 calories per hour

Pregnancy & Parenting Weight Gain and Pregnancy????? May 05 2009
16:59 (UTC)

While it is true that fat cells mostly develop in utero as well as during adolescence, I think it is much to early to worry about "making this baby huge".  There are a lot of things your body does in order to prepare and support pregnancy. I'd say a lot of what you are seeing is hormonal ....just like the weight gain and bloating a lot of women (myself especially) get when it is close to that time of the month. I have only been pregnant one time and being short in stature and running out of room (doctor's words exactly) for my stomach...ending up throwing up on 1/2 glass of water and having to have IV for dehydration...I didn't gain much at all and it was NOT healthy AT ALL because I couldn't eat and the developing baby didn't get what he needed...now he's disabled. Sorry, I cannot supply a don't worry pregnancy story for you but I think it is safe to say you are going to gain weight! You need to think about what you are putting into your body though. Think about natural non-processed foods and divide up your food so you are scheduled to eat about every 2.5 hours. Get an idea of the caloric need you have from your OB-GYN or some other professional and find ways to eat within that caloric budget. In the end, you may have a few extra pounds to get rid of but I bet if you follow a daily calorie goal it won't take much to get back where you are now.

I'd wager a bet that if 1/3 of your snacks...or mini-meals were based on salads you'd not feel guilty and eating fresh, raw, leafy greens allows you to eat more volume so it takes longer to chew and you will hopefully feel a bit more satisfied and don't forget it gives developing baby a lot of natural folic acid for healthy brain development. Also think about eating homemade healthy soups like vegetable soup..again it is high in volume but low in calories and IF you make it at home you get to control how much salt goes into the pot. For snacks and that incurable sweet tooth, check out kasha granola or soft fruit bars. Kasha products as a general rule have fiber and protein both which keep you feeling a bit more full for a little longer. And by eating natural whole grain based sweets, maybe you can get rid of some of the guilt you are feeling.

In the end, being pregnant is hard work and your body needs energy to do it. Enjoy it and embrace it...be thankful you can eat and nourish your unborn with the things it needs and try to keep the things it doesn't need to a minimum....like salty/fatty quick meals from mcdonalds or from hamburger helper or nitrates from cold cuts.

Good luck.

You mention your diet but what you didn't tell us is if your carbohydrates are simple or complex. Are you eating natural whole grains? If so, and your diet is not your problem, then you need to develop a new routine. Instead of kickboxing try a dance class (latin swing --maybe), try swimming instead of running, pick up a one day a week physical trainer to help give your weight training a kick in the pants.

As for your problem with not going each day, you may want to add dried prunes to your diet as well as nice hot baths with epson salt (did the trick for my kiddo who had chronic and constant constipation during his first years). If these home remedies do not work, you can see a doctor about lactulose which is a very gentle ever day for as long as you need it laxative. It is just a sugar that doesn't absorb into the body and it does trap water which creates more bulk. My kid was on that for 2 years under the supervision of a GI specialist. You may need to see a GI specialist as well because you may have blockage that you aren't aware of that could become serious. And it does sound like it should be warranted considering you are getting 40 to 50 grams of fiber along with 2 gallons of water.

good luck...

Fitness Considering Using a Personal Trainer Once a Week- Opinions Please? May 04 2009

My personal trainer graduated with a degree in sports medicine and is an ACE-Certified Personal Trainer. Actually all the trainers that I work with have a degree that is relavent to their job. A degree is one way to measure if a trainer is appropriate. It tells you that they have taken the time and are serious about physical fitness. Other industry certifications support their knowledge so I'd look for those too. These were the criteria that I originally used when I was looking at paying for a trainer. I refuse to pay $45/session for someone who has "always trained and has enjoyed physcial activity throughout their life". Just because somone has always trained doesn't mean they know the correct form ...likewise you have to put things into perspective...someone that has always trained may be more passionate about it than someone who went to college in order to make money from this field. And...through that passion they have perfected all the moves and all the forms. Ultimately, you will have to find someone that you can work with that motivates you that you can believe in. Ideally this person will help you believe in yourself as well.

I agree...this season is much better without Vicki, Brady, and Heba!!! I am hoping that Tara wins. She's come so far and won so many challenges and then she was the first woman to bet on herself by taking the money not the pound. I am proud of her. She's stepped up and won so many challenges---I would hate to see her not win the grand prize.

As for Ron, I don't like him at all. I think most of his whinning about knees and shoulders was game play. He's been a snake all along. Then to tell his son to vote for Kristin after telling her he'd talk to Mike leading her to believe that he'd convince Mike to keep her. I am a little amazed he didn't coerce Mike into voting for Helen since she tried to vote him off a few weeks back. Based on this, I do not want brown team to win anything! I am amazed at Mike's success though and I do feel sympathy for Mike's brother Max. I hope that Mike and Ron help Max get in shape and slim down.

Fitness Eating Before and after workouts.... Apr 29 2009

My dietitian recommends eating 1/2 to 1 piece of fruit (banana or apple) pre-workout this has worked wonderfully for me. Bananas and apples come prepackaged by nature.

I am sure energy bars are great but I have to admit that I have never tried them. I have heard they can be packed with refined sugar so be sure to read labels.

As for sticking to a complete breakfast, I think that is a great idea but I never manage to have time to get a complete breakfast everyday.  In our hectic society, it is just easier (for time's sake) to grab a piece of fruit and a container of yogurt for breakfast. If you have time to have a complete breakfast --that is great but if not, don't worry about it...there are 24 hours in a day so you have time to get in the servings of the food groups you missed at breakfast!

Weight Loss HELP! Sweets after dinner Apr 21 2009

I was just like you until I decided that I didn't want to be heavy anymore. I don't have dessert anymore and I am ok with it if I either brush my teeth or chew a piece of strong gum like extra spearmint. For my last snack of the day, I take cereal bars made by Kashi...the soft baked apple and strawberry and I half them and eat only 1 half. It really seems to do the trick for wanting sweets. I just came inside, my company is having a picnic today to celebrate its 40th anniversary, they had pecan pie which is my all time favorite dessert. I stood at the table where it along with brownies were lying and then I walked away without either. I cannot believe I walked away from pecan pie. But you know what, I want to be thinner worse than I wanted the piece of pie.

While I have always wanted to loose weight, I started making an effort 19 months ago and for 18 months I got almost no where...I was exercising every day...but not seeing any results. I finally gave up and saw a dietitican and after talking to her I realized how few calories I should be eating each day and I had to face up to what I was eating each day. After talking with her, I realize now that even though I was making an effort to exercise I was sabbatoging my efforts by eating sweets and drinking soda. I also learned it was just as important what you eat. Now that I have a good clean healthy diet and I am eating every 2.5 hours, I am not hungry and I don't have sweet cravings. It is so weird I have never been like this before...never before in my entire life have I ever walked away from pecan pie. It is just all in what your goals are and how fast you want to reach those goals.

You can still have sweets after each dinner and you can allow yourself cheat days...these are popular amongst dieters but just weigh that against the fact that a 130 lb woman can walk at 3.0 mph on a treadmill for 30 mintues and burn 120 calories while 1 snickers bar is around 240 calories. After I started weighing the costs of sweets, for me, I just decided that I wouldn't partake of the sweeties makes it easier for me.

I wish you luck---It is a hard journey!

I have been the gf at the end of those comments...actually I was the wife at the end of those comments. What I found in my experience was that the fat jokes along with worse, are more about control. keeping you in line by keeping your self-esteem in the dumpster so that the small man can feel good about himself. After 9 years of marriage, I found out that I never need to be treated that way...and bad thing...I lost 9 years of my life I can never get back and I have a child to prove it. The absolute best thing you can do is drop his puny ass because enough will never ever be enough and it will always hurt. It is a form of mental abuse that you are so caught up in that you think you need him but let me tell you getting rid of mine was the best thing I've ever done for mysel and I think you need to follow suit. There will be NO common weight that will keep him and you happy because again, it isn't about the weight it is about control and keeping you small. My ex learned that from his dad....perhaps yours has a dad that keeps his mom small too. They don't want you finding their vulnerabilities so they keep you focused on yourself and if weight ever becomes a non-issue it will be something else about your character that he can get to you with like your intelligence or morals something that keeps you trying to be someone else. And after all my strife and all the times I wanted to be thinner or red-headed or make more money (and even wanting to die because I couldn't make him happy).....my ex finally admits to me that he never loved me the way he should have (talk about the ultimate hurt)....don't let yourself be the victim that I have been. Get out and let him find Ms perfect that will put up with his ass you need more for yourself than this scum no matter how much you love him and I know you do because it wouldn't hurt if you didn't.

It is so common in older marriages that the communication that sews the 2 of you together becomes frayed. It is a mine field loaded with crap from the experiences that you've shared together. You don't have to tell her you aren't attracted to her anymore...she knows...she sees it every time you are out together...those looks of lust for other women that pass you by scantly clad on a warm summer day in the wal-mart parking lot (you think she doesn't see that? it is rather sickening and a totally male thing to do). Actions speak so much louder than words! She's been with you long enough to read you like a book. It is rare though, that a man ever develops the ability to read a woman like a book.

Sex being a chore to her is more about the lack of closenss and communication that you have in your marriage. When is the last time you touched her in an passionate way where sex wasn't demanded? When is the last time you told her thank you for spending her time with you? When is the last time you looked into her eyes and felt the fire that brought you two together in the first place? Do you guys talk at all? If your goal is to have a more active sex life, then she needs to know that she is attractive to you. The only way she's going to know that is if you say so...but here is the downfall for that...women are very good at knowing when men are lying. You need to figure out what feature you are still in love with and tell her that is beautiful. Something like, "you know hun, you have the most beautiful eyes in the world and your smile is so wonderful, thank you for being with me." is nice to hear. And there was no mention of the stuff you don't like.

If weight is a problem, then start cooking and don't buy cookies, chips and other junk that contributes to the problem. Start asking her out for walks, "hey hun, what do you say, will you spend some quality time with me? lets spend 15 minutes together and see what we can find in our neighborhood" or "I would love to spend some time together, what do you say, just you and me? Lets leave the kids here and go for a nice stroll it is a beautiful day." If all goes well, you guys will start recalling wonderful experiences from the past and before she knows it 25 minutes has past and you guys would have walked a little over a mile.

I just ran my first 5K yesterday (April 18). It was much shorter than I expected! I just had a banana on the way to the race. I was fine during the race then after a group of us went out for brunch. I didn't do anything special the night before. I didn't feel sick (well the uphill run/jog got to me but that is more about me being out of shape than about what I ate---the proof of that was once my heart rate returned to semi-normal the nausea went away).

I have a friend that does 1/2 or full marathons and he has a special diet that he sticks to days before a run, but he is running a minimum of 13 miles and it takes much longer to complete! Trust me, the 3.1 mile 5K will be over in less than an hour...you will be fine!

Weight Loss Is it bad to eat most your calories early in the morning? Apr 17 2009

I recently met with a registered dietitian and she has put me on 6 very small meals with the calories sliced pretty much equal between the meals (except for dinner and the after dinner snack...dinner gets the lion's share of the calories and the after dinner snack is very small). This has helped me tremendously to gain control over my weight problem. When I get hungry, I know it is just about 2.5 hours between meals that helps me mentally to cope with a diet of just 1200 calories and because I have a snack before I workout and then when I am done I know it is slightly less than an hour before my next meal...I never feel famished. I never thought that I'd be able to schedule my day so that I can eat 6 times, but I've been able to make it work and I feel so much better by eating this way.

There's a billion pieces of research on the internet to support any view of dieting you want to take. Since meeting with my dietician, I am siding with the view that it doesn't matter when you eat but it DOES matter WHAT you eat and that you keep your calories in line with your goals. Calories IN vs calories OUT...its working. My last snack is scheduled for 8:30 pm!!!! Who knew? I don't have to starve between 6 pm and my bed time of 11:30 pm. I don't go to bed famished and I don't wake up wanting more than a lion's share of breakfast.

But, for me....to myself...I do NOT like being over-weight. My husband says I am beautiful...but what I see in the mirror doesn't reflect that. I am tired of being the fat chick. I want to know how it feels to be thin....at least one time in my life. I am pissed that I let myself get this big. I am pissed because I didn't realize that I have every right to be normal size. No matter what you are really like, your post sounds very overly controlling. Perhaps you could change your tone and offer to do something you know he loves. Grab a basketball and when he gets home ask him to shoot some hoops with you. You'd be amazed how many calories you can actually burn this way (basketball adds a little resistenance, thowing things above your head takes extra calories, and running either full court or half court will definitely burn some calories). You might not like playing basketball but you could learn for hubby?

You and your hubby need to be team players and for motivation instead of telling him how fat and awful he is to be fat and to tell him you're not sleeping with him because he's fat ...well....I'd say that from his standpoint...motivation and depression couldn't get any worse. You should lift him up...we all go to work...we all get torn down at work...home should be a sanctuary not a hell. And...we all go through cycles in life...sometimes we are fat...other times we aren't. It is the ebb and flow of life. So, instead of asking him to the gym...start out gradual...ask him to go for a walk (outside after he's done with the treadmill)....let the walks progress to hilly areas, play basketball with him often, take some water with you on your walks...ask him to carry it (adding weight), if he eats what you fix...then don't buy cookies when you go to the store....add fruit and veggies to your menu...there are so many things you could do to help him fix his problem that would be fun for the both of you rather than your harping on him. Maybe right now he's gained weight so he is frightened of the gym...may sound weird but I am not motivated to go to the gym in my current condition so I have a private trainer in a private studio --if you have the money, perhaps you could do that for him if he doesn't want to shake his fat in front of lots of people at the gym. Once he looses some weight, he will most likely be more motivated to go to the gym since he has a past interest in working out every day. Other ways you can help is getting some weights at home and work out in front of him and after a few days ask him to join you. You can find used gym equipment pretty cheap at yard sales. Have a friend that has kids? Perfect...get together and you and hubby play hide and seek with the kids. If not, in the summer invite a few friends over buy a cheap slip and slide and watch the adults having a great time and burning lots of calories (add a little alcohol and it gets hilarious) ...yep adults still like to play...especially men who are around women dressed in bikinis! Think of other ways to just have fun and not harp on weight and the gym! As someone else said, having sex very frequently also helps....it lightens the mood, reduces stress and tension and burns calories....it creates a closer bond between husband and wife.

Lastly, if you cannot love him fat....then perhaps you cannot truly love him at all. Trophy marriages rarely make it to the 7 year mark. Marriages based on friendship and teamwork, intermingled with really good communications seem to have the best odds of surviving in our society. I'd ask you really think about your situation because if you ever plan to have kids things will change and you will need a friend...a partner....a companion...NOT a trophy.

I love skiing and I am just about the most non-athletic person I know....and I was 36 the first time I got on skiis. It is great fun. I would highly recommend taking lessons it will be well worth it.

In my opinion, the whole skiing experience is enhanced by having the right gear on. Look into microfleece shirt, synthetic under shirt and under pants, ski gloves, waterproof ski jacket and ski pants...and DO NOT forget nice merino wool socks. You will be so glad to make the investment in this gear and layer it up when you are on the mountain. You don't need any of this but I really don't like being wet and cold so for me....it was required.

One more thing: on the days when you have class, you should rent the short skis. It is SOOOOO much easier to ski with SHORT skis! I had made the bad choice of renting beginner skis in the town I live in and taking them with us because it was so much cheaper to do that and we were driving/had the space. When I got there, I did the first hour with these longer beginner skis and ended up ditching the rest of the class and getting a rental of really short skis. It was SOOOOOOOO much easier to learn with the little skis. After a couple of classes, I was able to ski and enjoy the longer skis.

I wish you luck and I hope you have tons of fun....Wish I were going to Lake Tahoe too!!!!
