In a year and a half I've gone from torn meniscus/ACL to running again and faster than before! I just hit and sustained 7mph :D For my 5'2 frame, I'm happy with that! |

I've been slowly loosing weight, mostly by being more active. I injured my knee early last year and went from a runner/biker to a couch potato with an icepack! I gained 10 lbs, but I am happy to report that I've officially lost (and kept off!) 20 lbs since July of last year!! Wooo. I only have 10 lbs to go before I reach my goal weight. I bike 20 min./day X 2 (to/from work), run 3X/wk, and swim on the weekends for at least half an hour, and do longer rides (2-3 hrs) on Friday, Sat, and Sun. Biking burns SO many calories, and is low-impact. I'm so happy I was able to resume cycling after my meniscus tear, it's helped me get stronger so I can run again! My knee is doing much better, and I'm back into training for Ironman Oceanside 70.3 in March next year, and Kona full Ironman before I graduate from law school in 2012. :D |

I have a box of stuff in my living room that I pull out every night for strength training and yoga. The contents are below: 1) yoga DVD 2) 15 lb kettleball 3) 3, 5, 10lb dumbell sets 5) yoga mat 6) jump rope I also use a gym, so I do my cardio stuff on the elliptical machine or bike, but I love doing my strength training at home while getting my daily youtube fix. I am a college student with limited space, so my lil' setup is small and practical. I really like the kettleball for core work too! I workout four "hard" days per week: 50 minutes cardio + 20 minutes lazy swimming (floating, some backstroke, mainly for fun). The rest of the time I either do yoga in hte morning for 20-30 minutes or take a walk around my neighborhood. I do strength training with my free weights every other day. Sometimes I go to the gym for the krav maga classes or yoga group workouts. |

Hi Kate, I workout on the elliptical trainer at my gym 3X/week for 45 min., I bike to/from school daily (20 min total), and swim once per week for about an hour. I do yoga for about 10 minutes before bed each night, and I try to take an early morning walk at least once a week before classes. I am not sticking to a plan, I just do what's fun and healthy. I used to run more but I have asthma that is still being managed and the elliptical trainer seems to aggravate it less. Good luck with your workouts, just make sure your having fun! If you think you might be prone to overdoing it, maybe you could find a workout buddy. |

Hi, I have severe asthma that is being managed on 250/50 Advair and Singulair. It's much worse if I excert myself, and that can be extremely frustrating. I don't have insurance either, but have been able to sign up for a "patient assistance" program through my student health center. Perhaps you would qualify for free medication? Check with your doctor! :) As a geology student I have to hike 10 - 16 mi/day in the field starting January, for 14 days straight. We're headed to the desert to map a mountain range. Anyway, I have been slowly building my resistance up to the point where I can run 2 - 3 miles without slowing down (doesn't sound like much, but is a HUGE improvement from just a couple of months ago). Allergies can make asthma much worse too. You might want to consult with your doctor or a dietician to make sure there's nothing in your daily diet that you're allergic to. I found out that I'm allergic to wheat, and for at least three years have been getting a rash and mouth sores after I'd eat a sandwich, etc. I stopped eating all wheat containing products (sucks!!!) and my asthma and allergies have improved. Good luck with your asthma and treatment! |

Original Post by meganr: Actually, super fresh fish doesn't smell bad at all (it's odorless). If you ever have the chance, buy a freshly caught fish and smell it...not bad! |

| Foods | Discussion - Which is actually cheaper? Eating healthy or eating less healthy? | Dec 14 2007 06:52 (UTC) |

I am a pseudo-vegetarian (no dairy, no beef/pork, will eat chicken and eggs if organic and free range)...I think eating healthier is WAY WAY WAY cheaper. I can go to the farmer's market and buy a week's worth of vegetables for under $10, most of it organic, all of it grown locally. The last time I ate fast food (chicken sandwich), it was over $7 for the sandwich and a salad, no drink or fries. However, in my town soy milk is about $2 more than organic milk. I don't buy meat very often, and I've never purchased beef or other kinds of meat, but organic free-range chicken is about $7/lb at the market. If I bought chicken on a regular basis, it would be fairly expensive...but that's because of the kind of chicken it is. |

| Motivation | Why is eating healthy so expensive?! | Dec 14 2007 06:44 (UTC) |

| Do you have a local farmer's market? It's fab! I can get organic green beans, apples, peppers, etc. for about $1/lb. It's all locally grown too, so there's less of a carbon footprint. Also try to get veggies that are in season in your area, that way there's less transportation distance = less expensive. Costco has a good selection of veggies/fruit for a reasonable price, sometimes less expensive than the supermarket. | |||

Hi there, I just wanted to add that if you live near a Costco, they have TONS of already pre-washed ready-to-eat veggies and fruit that you can toss over salad mix and voilla! a healthy yummy meal with VERY little effort. :) Good luck on your goals!! |
