i'm not sure about brewers yeast, but nutritional yeast is not the stuff in packets that you use for cooking.  check this out:

i live for the potatoes and broccoli with cheese sauce.  i have it almost every day for lunch.  and i enjoy the lean cuisines because when you read the ingredients it's real food - sure it's real GMO food, but hey it's real food.  :-)

you can certainly just make it with milk, but i would recommend putting it in a blender - dissolves much MUCH better and you're not stuck with the clumps at the bottom.

i also make mine in my morning smoothie (1 banana, 1 c frozen mixed berries, 1 c frozen peaches, 1 scoop protein powder) and stir it into freshly made oatmeal.  and though it may not sound like a great idea, depending on how strongly flavored yours is (mine's pretty mild) you can cook it into almost anything that has its own, stronger flavor (i.e. spaghetti sauce, breads, etc.) without tasting it.

i would also recommend that you head to the library and just start flipping through cookbooks.  there are tons of 'basic' cookbooks out there that will explain everything in great detal.  keep an eye on the 'recipe' forum in CC too. 

one of my FAVORITE cookbooks is the low-fat moosewood cookbook.  some of the ingredients are a little hard to find, but as you flip through it you'll find many foods that are in your local store and some really great ideas on how to serve them.

i either have an egg-white omlet (with morningstar farms chick'n strips, spinach, and sun-dried tomatoes), kashi, or a smoothie.  right now i'm in the smoothie phase and i love it.  1c frozen berries, 1 med banana, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, and sometimes maybe 1/2 c of another type of frozen berries.  mmmmmm... smoothie. give it a try!  and the protein powder really keeps you full, too.

i recently got a low-price HRM (oregon scientific) and it works pretty well.  i like it, but if i were to do it again, i might go with one of the polar or higher-end brands for the simple reason that they're coded.

all this means is that there's a code between YOUR chest strap and YOUR watch/monitor so that other things don't interfere.  with mine, certain stop lights and other electronics mess with the readout (it'll suddenly jump to 202 bpm as i pass a police car or a hospital or a transformer).  it's not a big deal as it also has an 'average' feature and since these are momentary jumps or dips they get worked out at the end so that i get a fairly accurate reading. 

i guess, in short, if you don't mind the blips go with the less expensive ones.  i like that i have one regardless, and i'm not annoyed enough to go spend money on a better one.  but once this one dies i'll probably go for the coded ones.

i wish i had a pool available to swim regularly!  swimming is GREAT for you, and arguably better than running because not only are you doing cardio, but you're using all of your major muscle groups and adding resistance.  good for you.  whatever you can do - do it.  and switching up swimming and running is great too.  but i hear ya - i HATE to run in the heat/humidity.

that's the hardest thing to remember when you feel like you're about to fall off the bike and you look to your left and you see a spandex-clad person barely breaking a sweat.

i've not been spinning in a while (been running and playing volleyball) but you're inspiring me to get back over there.  thanks!

spinning definitely hurts the rear-end for the first few classes.  it's some combination of using the muscles and sitting on a pizza slice sized piece of concrete (or at least that's how it feels).  it will get better, and i usually find that it takes about 2 weeks (i go in and out of spinning phases and would go about 3x per week).

as far as standing goes, it may be that you're not very conditioned (jogging is less intensive than a high-paced spinning class - depending of course on how fast you jog, but generally a fast spinning class is going to be harder) or it could be that the muscles that you're using (thighs and glutes) aren't as trained.  give it time, do what feels right, and keep pushing.  you'll get better.  also watch your stance - you don't want to be overworking and overtiring muscles because you're standing wrong.  make sure that your hips are over your ankles and that you're not leaning too much in either direction.  you will lean with your upper body, but keep your legs in line and not too far forward or back. 

also keep in mind that you can turn down the resistance.  the only one in that class that matters is you, so certainly don't be embarrassed by going at your own pace.  as you get better you can crank it up a bit more, but keep it in line with your abilities.  just because the instructor says 'crank it' doesn't mean you have to.

finally, with the weight, i truly would not worry about two pounds.  some days you loose some some days you gain.  as long as you're moving down on the scale overall, that's what matters.  it could be that you've gained muscle or that you ate a bunch of salty foods yesterday so you're holding on to more water. 

don't be so down!  you're doing great, and as long as you're moving, having fun, and counting your calories you will loose weight.  move more, and up the intensity when it's right, but don't sweat it.

as bigtwinky mentioned, if you've gained weight around the middle you need to loose weight overall.  to do ab workouts will certainly increase the amount of calories you burn, but no more then leg workouts or arm workouts would.  and you're not necessarily going to see changes in your waist right away.  no matter how buff your abs are, if you still have excess weight over top they're not going to show.  in fact really overweight people tend to have incredibly strong abs and backs just because it takes increased muscle strength to move their weight around day to day - but again, with the excess weight you can't tell that their abs are great.

i certainly don't mean to dissuade you from working out - any and all excercise is better than none.  but you don't need to pay 'just 19.99 a month' for any particular machine.  if you feel that having such a machine will inspire you, and you have the disposable income to spend, then by all means do it up.  but you don't need the abdoer, absizer, abominator, abimanizator or anything in particular to make it happen.  if you want to get some great workout advice and free workout routines, i'd point you to http://www.intense-workout.com/ ; it's a bit sarcastic, but great great great info.  whatever you decide to do, just do it and i hope you have great success.

this is one of my very very favorite meals.  i'll write it as the recipe goes, but then in () to the cal cutting stuff.

marinate 4 mushrooms in a low-cal vinegarette

sautee garlic and onions - use a fair amout of each, maybe 3 cloves and 3/4 red onion - in olive oil (i use lots of olive oil spray - 0 cals), add 1 lb of spinach and keep stiring till it cooks down and quite a few sun-dried tomatoes (don't get the kind in the oil).  while that's happening broil the mushrooms just so that they start to wilt a bit - about 5-10 min.  go back to your spinach mixture, keep stirring (and spray it liberally with olive oil spray).  once it's all cooked down and the sun-dried tomatoes are soft, add 1/2 cup of bread crumbs.  at this point you might need some olive oil, or you could just spray again liberally.  add 1/2 cup low-fat light parm cheese.  stir this all together.  when it's all mixed up, pile the mixture on the mushrooms, sprinkle with cheese, and broil till the chees browns. 

it is amazing.  feel free to mess with the proportions so that it has what you want in it (personally, i love sun-dried tomatoes and garlic, so i always have lots of those).

this is great.  pretty lo-cal, very tasty, very filling, and lots of iron.  enjoy!

despite what people tell us (or me, anyway) when you look at it cheese is a much better source of fat than protein.  i include light soy milk with breakfast and dinner, have a couple of egg whites each day (i love hard-boiled eggs, so it's easy.  or i have some egg-white omlettes, or just cook them up and add them to whatever i'm eating), and try to eat tofu every now and again.  i also always check the label before i buy foods, and when i'm looking for a particular item (cereal, bread, etc.) get the one with the lowest possible cals for the highest amt of protein.  hope that helps!

this is really simple and really good.  just take your salmon and wrap it in tin foil with lemon and orange slices on top and bottom.  also put fresh dill on top (i put the dill on then the fruit), sprinkle with salt, wrap and cook (about 1/2 hr on 350 depending on the size of the fillets -- just keep checking every 5-10 min after 1/2 hr so it doesn't get all dry).

when it's done, peel off the fruit and dill (if you want to be fancy it's a pretty garnish) and serve.  i like it with steamed spinach and sometimes cous cous too.

yeah, coke is awful for many reasons.  those that i posted were just some of the most basic, and i didn't want to get off on a serious rant.  if you really want to talk about it, another big problem is that they're part of the group of companies trying to privitize or "own" water resources (for more info on this troubling topic goolge search "bolivia's water wars") with their dasani group (which, by the way is just tap water run through a brita, bottled, and sold to the unsuspecting for $1.50).

my favorite part is:

i use protein powder almost daily and its really helped me to meet my targets for protein (esp. since i'm vegetarian).  i guess the only result is that i'm getting the protein my body needs and as a result able to build more muscle, which helps to lower fat.  i'd recommend it to hit your goals, and it's good mixed into smoothies or yogurt or cottage cheese but i wouldn't advise you just mix it with water.  hope that helps!

i almost never drink soda anymore, after having a hefty 2/day habit a few years ago.  the downsides of it are enormous.  here's some of my reasons (backed up by info found online):
-Colas contain phosphoric acid, which draws calcium from your bones. This can lead to an increased risk of osteoporosis and according to a recent Harvard study, bone fractures (http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/2000/06.1 5/soda.html).
- All types of soft drinks are very acidic, especially colas.  In order to neutralize a glass of cola, it takes 32 glasses of high pH alkaline water. It is clearly known by the medical profession that disease loves acid.
- Nutritionally, soft drinks are low in value. Their food energy comes solely from refined sugar. Every element of nutritional importance, except calories, is zero.
-The human body is about 60% water. Your muscles and your brain are about 75% water. Your blood is about 82% water. And your bones are about 25% water. The caffeine is a diuretic, which makes the body rid itself of water.

please don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to be holier-than-thou.  i still enjoy my rootbeer floats from time to time, but between the bone risks (osteoporosis is common in older ladies in my family) and the wasted calories and the insane amounts of sugar it's just not for me.

for the non-nutritional side of things, coca-cola's human rights abuses (including the killing of union organizers in columbia) are well documented (just do a google search for "coke" and "human rights").  here's a site explaining the abuses and containing the actual complaint: http://www.mindfully.org/Industry/Coca-Cola-H uman-Rights20jul01.htm

there aren't warning lables on tuna.  that's part of what the industry has been sucessfully lobbying against.  they're trying to pass warning lables into law in california, but it's a HUGE uphill battle (and most likely, the fed's will be able to trump them with weaker laws unfortunately - check out www.insidebayarea.com/sanmateocountytimes/loc alnews/ci_3730062 for a recent article on this fight). 

again with the shameless plug for action: call your congressman and tell him/her to oppose H.R. 4167 the "National Uniformity of food Act" which would make it so that individual states could NOT pass laws stricter than fed. law on food warnings (a pretty bad idea since it's states laws that have gotten us most of the protections we currently have).  see my earlier post to find out who represents you.

mercury is a HUGE probem, especially for "women of childbearing age" (read:  women aged 12-40) because mercury bioaccumulates - meaning it moves up the food chain and the higher up the animal the more mercury in its system (which is why tuna are so problematic - the biggest ones are the ones we eat, and they're the ones who've eaten all the smaller fish and acquired all of their mercury) - and it stays in your system for a long time. 

but it is NOT only a problem for women.  in addition to being a reproductive toxin (it acutally passes through the placenta to the fetus and even if the mother is not eating mercury-contaminated food at the time, the mercury in her system gets passed on), it is also an immunotoxin, a developmental toxin, a liver toxin, a kidney toxin, and a cardiovascular toxin.  so, the effects are worse for women (because they can pass mercury to an unborn child) but they still exist for men - though not as acute - and are DEFINITELY acute for children (like lead, mercury is a heavy metal that can slow development).

most scientists scoff at the FDA's recommendations, which are HIGHLY influenced by the fishing lobby (read:  the fishing lobby has tons of money and no problem throwing it around) who has a strong interest in the matter (as soon as it gets out that they're selling a tainted product, sales go down). 

most mercury comes from coal power plants and chlorine plants.  once it gets into the air (from the burning of coal or processing of chlorine), it gets rained down into the ocean.  that's where little bacteria break it down to methymercury, the very dangerous form that then works its way up through the food chain and winds up on our plates.  this is why clean air laws are SO important.  if we aren't controling what we put in the air, it ends up in our dinner.

for more info.  this is the type of thing i do for a living, so if anyone wants to email me for more sources, i have about a billion.  don't mean to rant here, but this is HUGELY important, and if we don't take care of it now, it will become much much much worse. 

and as a final plug, call your congressman/senator and tell them we need strong clean air regulations to protect us from this dangerous toxin.  if you don't know who represents you, visit www.projectvote-smart.org and enter your zip code.  they'll give you a list of your state and national representatives and their contact info (including an email address and a telephone number).

if you don't want to buy anything, just remember your route and check it at www.mapmyrun.com   it's fantastic!  just figure about how long it takes you to go how far you want to go, hit at least that while you're out there, and log it afterwards to be sure.  or if you're more of the planning type, just go to the site first, map out your route and head out the door.
