That's great! Yeah I only drink lactaid (fat free) or soy or rice milk. Soy is a little thick for me, I prefer the lightness of rice milk- it's more watery, and i was used to drinking skim milk before. I'm generally okay with yogurt--the live cultures digest some of the lactose for me. But ice cream, anything made with buttermilk or cream (most cakes, cookies, dessert stuff.... darn it lol)... none of that stuff works out for me. Hope things get better once you figure everything out :) |

Ahhh I HATE when that happens, it actually partially made my eating disorder worsen because I thought that eating ANYTHING would make my stomach look like i was pregnant... BUT eventually I figured out why it was happening. First of all, early into recovery my body wasn't used to the amount of food I was taking in, and my digestion slowed, I had more stomach acid (leading to bloat because it attracted a lot of water), and my body just sort of hung on to everything I put in it. Secondly, I found out I was severely lactose intolerant, much more so that I had been a few years before. So when I cut dairy out of my diet, the bloating after meals or snacks completely stopped! Now it only happens if I have something exceptionally spicy or full of fiber, like beans or celery or jalapenos... man I love my jalapenos. haha! So maybe try cutting some stuff out and see if it helps? Good luck! Drinking lots of water REALLY helps too. |

Hey, I'm glad if we helped you, and I hope you will up your calories beyond the 1000 level. That barrier was REAL hard for me to break so I know where you're coming from. But also it's worth noting that the no-period thing is bad. Real bad. As in, you already may have permanent bone loss that will manifest in calcium being leached from your teeth (I have that problem already :( and have for a few years now) and osteoporosis down the line. I'm not sure if you'll run into this issue later, but also, once you start getting periods again, you might start having these weird dairy cravings--I have them and my theory is that my body is missing so much calcium from not having periods for a while and suffering from bone loss that it wants all the calcium it can get. Also it could have something to do with the sudden growth spurt I got after I started eating normally again (a pretty sweet bonus of eating normally/gaining a little weight, I'd say!). I hope that things work out for you. All the best of luck. |

I can't give you the "anonymous help" you're asking for. It's sad, because I know where you're coming from about wanting to not ruin the image people have of you as the "healthy" one, the "in control" one, etc etc... I was the same way... but the fact of the matter is that you already ARE out of control and you may not be able to do this on your own. Basically, if you aren't willing to help yourself by going to a professional who knows what they're talking about, I don't know what to tell you. I'm sorry. |

I'm not sure I can help you because I was never a binge eater, but I have been anorexic for about 6 years and have been in recovery for a few months, so I'll try to offer the best advice I can. When I went into recovery I was terrified of gaining weight too, and I still am. But the best thing I found to help me get into eating a normal amount of calories every day (I eat between 1200 and 1400 now, and I'm 5'6"ish and about 120 lbs) was EXERCISE. It regulates my appetite which helps keep my calories normal, but also it calms me down about eating more on those days when I feel like restricting. Also, on the days when you normally binge, exercise can regulate your appetite to actually keep you from eating so much (at least, theoretically--this is only my thinking). However, I really don't think you should do this alone--especially not at 17. I didn't get help until I was 19, almost 20... and I regret it. I should have gone to a therapist and nutritionist much, much sooner. If you can do that, even just to your guidance counselor at school, it will be of SO much benefit to you. I guarantee it. You CANNOT do this without the support of others around you. In fact, the only thing that has kept me in recovery for this past year has been my boyfriend (we live together), who has been with me through hospitalizations, therapy, relapse, nights where I felt like falling apart... and I've stayed in recovery when I felt I couldn't do it because I wanted to honor his commitment to me, and his belief that I was worth not hurting my body. Maybe if you can confide in someone, a friend, a guidance counselor, a sibling, or a parent, they can help you by believing in you and giving you that support. If you can do it for them in the times when you feel weak, maybe it will give you that extra boost to stay on track. If you have any questions or if there's anything else I can do to help, please feel free to message me on here, or if I'm not on, IM me at damasknymph (AIM)... I know what it's like to not know who to turn to and I want to offer all the help I can. It's going to be alright, ok? You can do this. |

That's some really good advice that I kind of can't believe I hadn't considered before. Maybe scales and calorie counting isn't working for me at all. Thanks for your help with seeing this issue in a new light. |

| Health & Support | I crave burnt foods? | Oct 31 2008 13:02 (UTC) |

Just to let you guys know, I read somewhere on nutritional deficiencies that if people crave burnt food, it means your body wants more carbon, which you can also get from eating fresh fruit. So if you eat more of that you may not crave the burnt stuff as much. Just a thought =) |

Oh man I hate ttom... I gained like three pounds in one night, which I had just managed to lose lol, but I know it's just water weight so I'm not too freaked out. Although it is weird how the night before I manage to eat like 500 calories more than I usually do somehow, and then the next day I'm not as hungry. Just a weird experience overall, I wish it didn't disrupt my routine the way it does. Oh well! |

Thanks Hannikate! :) It is great btw that you let yourself have treats. I am still working on that, lol. I do tend to fear those cookies a lil bit.. but every now and then I do let myself have a slice of pizza, so that's progress ;) |

Hi it's been soooo long!! I've been away over the summer working on an internship but now I'm back! I'm at school for my last semester of college and it's really annoying, I don't know what they put in the food, the calorie counts seem inaccurate, and I can never tell what hidden ingredients they add that I may not be able to eat.... (i.e. milk) But the good news is I lost 2 inches off my waist in the past few months AND, what's even more awesome is that although I had developed re-feeding syndrome from getting over my anorexia and upping my cals/carb intake (I was on acid inhibitors for like four months for it, bloated and in pain constantly, it was horrible), it is now GONE and i can eat WHATEVER I WANT OMGGGGG!!! it's so awesome! my cals are now consistently around 1400-1500 and I exercise three times a week with a friend, mostly spinning and a bit of pilates/toning exercise. I love it. This feels totally different from ana, the hours and hours of running I used to do, the feeling of starvation... I am SO glad that I'm healthy now and even though I still feel the nagging sensation that I want to lose about 5-8 lbs more (I weigh 125 i think? at 5'6"), I look in the mirror and am REALLY HAPPY with what I see. Warm fuzzy feelings! OH by the way guys, since I went into recovery, the addition of nutrients has caused me to kind of go thru the puberty I never got to go thru in terms of growth spurts, and I have grown 2 inches!!! I'm 5'6" and a half now and I can't believe it. I am SO happy I am finally taking care of my body. PS can i still be in the 5'5" club??? idk lol Love to all! J |

First of all, I'm sorry you're going through this. I've been through it too but I can say that although I had my ed, off and on, for around six years (age 12-19ish), once I started eating normally, my breasts and butt blew up like balloons lol, it was almost too much. I also grew 2 and a half inches in four months!!!! It was like I finally went through puberty at age 20! Crazy. Anyway, I'm still kinda in the tummy stage, but I don't think it's fat. I'm having a problem with acid indigestion actually because my GI tract isn't quite used to this much food yet, so I get bloated a lot. But I think it'll go away. I'm on prilosec right now and that's helping a LOT. So try not to think about it and stay strong ok? What I do when it gets too much for me is I just put a pillow over my stomach and do something else. Because it's not worth it, for me, to die young and suffer just to have a BMI below 18 (which was my eternal goal...). I don't want that for myself anymore. That's no way to live. Good luck!!! If you need anything I'd be happy to talk/help. |

Haha, fun fun fun yes. Yeah I don't USUALLY faint, although I have before. Usually my vision goes yellow and sparkly (like static kinda?) and then black. Most of the time since I know what's coming I just kinda sit myself down on the floor lol while I can still see. Did your doctor tell you what causes this annoying stuff?! I wish I knew. They ran a stress test on me once but there's nothing wrong with my heart. Maybe my blood pressure is just really naturally low. Hm. |

Vasovagal syncope... is that the same thing as orthostatic hypotension? Cause that's what I have... I do the same thing, get up (even just from sitting), get a few feet away, and black out. :-( I've always kinda wondered if it had anything to do with my hypoglycemia, or if that has anything to do with my low blood pressure in general. I thought I was the only one it happened to! |

It could be exercise induced asthma, or do you think you could be hypoglycemic? I have reactive hypoglycemia, and when I exercise or don't eat for 3-4 hours, I experience the same feelings, plus my extremities tingle, my speech is slurred, and if I don't get food (or sugar) I usually pass out. Anyway def see a doctor!!! Good luck!!! |

Thats funny since I've had the same problem lately. I recently gained around 5 pounds and I don't know why since I'm only eating ~1200 calories a day right now. I don't always have time to exercise, but I walk about 30 minutes a day, at lunch and stuff at work, so I do get a bit. It's weird..... though I am on the pill and that tends to make me unable to lose weight... |

I'm so excited, I just measured my height and since going into recovery 6 months ago, I've shot up almost two inches, bringing me to 5'6" 1/2!!!! SWEET! I'm so glad that I'm finally giving my body the nutrients it needs. It's been on semi-starvation diets since I was twelve :-/ so I guess I never really got that puberty growth spurt.... I'm so happy I'm not anorexic anymore. *happy moment*! |

Hi guys! I'm 5'5.5"-5'6". I'm 20 and I currently weigh about 125 but it depends on the day (I have food intolerances to wheat and casein so if I mess up I get bloated and gain like 5 lbs water weight!! awful I know). My measurements are 33-26?-34 (I think lol). I don't have much of a waist, boo. It's alright though. My goal weight is around 115-118 Do you think that's too low? I'm in recovery from an ED but I've gained back more weight than I wanted to, I just want to take it slow this time and stop when I need to stop. |

Hey :) I'd love to join. Not sure if I need to lose weight but I kinda want to, just a little bit, without things getting bad. I've been in recovery from anorexia for about 4 or 5 months now and I am up around 1200-1300 every day. (Proud of myself!) It was really, terribly, awfully hard but I'm glad I did it. I feel best about myself when I'm around 115-118 lbs; thats just how I look the best and I want to be back there so that I don't have to starve myself anymore. Hopefully if I do it gradually I won't feel the need to lose any more when I reach my goal weight. I only ever started starving myself to get there in the first place. anyway: Name: Jenny Age: 20 Height: 5'6" CW: 126? bloated lately GW: 115 Unfortunately I also seem to have food allergies, particularly to wheat. I'm getting tested for celiac in a few weeks. |

| Weight Loss | question about calorie intake | Jul 03 2008 19:42 (UTC) |

As a former anorexic, it is hard for me to say this, but you must MUST eat a minimum of 1200 calories per day or your body will go into starvation mode. I usually eat between 1250 and 1350, although that's actually lower than what I'm supposed to be eating, it's as much as I can manage right now. But at least my body can handle that you know? Good luck! |

that's funny, i lose weight really easily too up to about three days before, and then all of a sudden i gain around 3-4 lbs of water weight that just sticks around till around day two after TOM is gone (i too am on the pill). it's so funny how different everybody is! and here's a shout out to all the ladies who mentioned how pregnant they look while TOM is around lol... it's ridiculous and i hate it, but i figure it'll be over in a few days. why worry? ACTUALLY, i've noticed you can REALLY decrease the bloating (at least in appearance) by drinking a ton of water and exercising (although i know you don't feel much like exercising!). |

hey guys, btw, i'm confused too about how many calories i should be getting! any advice on the matter would be much appreciated! right now i'm getting around 1200-1500 a day, which cc recommends, but i feel like it's a lot... idk! i found out something interesting the other day about body fat percentage and stuff. i was thinking i would try to lose about 10 more pounds, but i took my measurements and estimated my body fat percentage to be around 14%, which for a woman is really low- it's supposed to be 22%-25% ideally- but might explain why although i feel pretty thin and good, the SCALE says i weigh more than i think i should. lol that rhymed! any thoughts? muscle does weigh significantly more than fat right? |
