The Lounge Does anyone (particularly females) like their mother? Nov 05 2008

I'm 23, a daughter. I love and respect my mom very much - I also think she's fun, funny, and smart. I am proud of the decisions she makes every day, the way she has raised me, and the career she has made for herself. I hope to be a mom like her...we are pretty close friends now (we still don't talk about sex or anything like that -ew!)
When I was 12-14ish, I was a big brat (I think those middle school transitional years are really tough for everyone), and we had lots of little fights, I slammed the door, I was embarassed of the way she dressed (which now I think is so cute!), but I outgrew that phase and realized that I really respected her.
She and my dad were never very strict (didn't really have a curfew, they didn't keep tabs on my grades or snoop through my things) - they really trusted me, but I was extremely well-behaved (an only child and a perfectionist).

I think that one of the most important things that she did was convey her trust in me every day from the time I was small, her leniency allowed me to be very independent but also to know that if I did something bad, I would be disappointing her. In my opinion a disappointed parent is way worse than an angry one!

The Lounge good city for singles?? Oct 10 2008

I strongly recommend Austin. It is a wonderful up and coming city with a great nightlife, culture, and climate. Because University of Texas is located there, there are a ton of young people, great minds, and a good singles scene. It's also a really pretty city with a nice downtown area but also close to Texas hill-country and a beautiful lake. And great weather, if you can handle a little extra heat in the summer!
I live in Houston, which I actually enjoy, too. It's one city where there are still a lot of jobs available, it's warm, it's big and bustling...I also think the singles scene is pretty good - there are lots of grad students and young, successful professionals. Sometimes the fact that I actually live in Texas still sends me for a loop (I grew up in DC), but I still recommend it!

The Lounge New Orleans Being Evacuated Aug 31 2008

i went to tulane and was there when katrina hit.

new orleans is a very special city filled with incredible people and very rich history - both regional and national. it's unfortunate that part of what makes the city so unique and wonderful is also what makes it vulnerable, but the spirit of new orleans will continue to thrive regardless of any adversity it may face.

new orleans is not without its problems - and everyone who lives there is aware of them, believe me, but it is still a little disheartening to see people making blanket statements that suggest that new orleans shouldn't be rebuilt or that the people who live there don't really matter - after all, they chose their circumstances (after katrina, this was a common argument - not saying it was perpetuated by anyone on this board).

the people that call new orleans home are truly passionate about its distinction and my thoughts and prayers are with every one of them, as well as everyone else affected by or in the path of this storm.
