Foods Need help with food to take to school Jan 22 2009

I am also a student, and I have class from 5-8 in the evening.  It's a weird time because it's too early to eat before I leave, but I tend to get hungry for a real meal during that window.  Luckily, my professors encourage us to bring dinner, because it helps us stay awake.  Here are my favorite low-cal, portable options:

-Fiber One Bars (I like Oats and Chocolate) 140 Calories and VERY filling

-Protein Shakes (I buy Gold Standard Whey protein powder and put one scoop of the powder into a blender bottle, when it's time for the shake, I just go to the water fountain and add 6-8 oz. of water and shake to mix).  Blender bottles and protein powder available at Vitamin Shoppe, GNC, etc.

-Salsa Chicken:  Get 2-3 lbs of chicken (I used boneless, skinless breasts, but this would work with this bone in as well), a can of chicken broth, and a big jar of your favorite salsa.  Put the ingredients in a pot and simmer for 3 hours.  The chicken will be incredibly tender.  You can eat it plain or shred it and make tacos, put it in a salad...whatever you like.  I like to have one breast with some extra salsa on top.  I just pop it in the microwave at school, and it is so tender that I don't need to bother bringing a knife, just a fork!

100 Calorie Packs - There are so many of these to choose from, and they are a great option for times when you need to bring something non-perishable.  The options, such as cheez-its, ritz-mix, and chocolate covered pretzels keep you from giving in to that trip to the vending machine during the mid-lecture break.

-Campbell's Select Harvest Light Soups - My favorite is Savory Chicken and vegetable.  Usually not more then 160-200 calories for the whole can (2 servings), has protein, and fiber.  I find it to be very filling and easy when I'm in a rush.

-Quaker "Quakes" Mini Rice Cakes - Again, these are my way of avoiding the temptation to get chips.  They make them in favors like ranch, nacho and cheddar cheese, and bbq, as well as the regular rice cake flavors (caramel corn, etc)  70 calories for 10 cakes, not bad!  They also have a new product called "Tortillaz" which are air baked chips made from rice and corn, in flavors like guacamole and nacho cheese.  These are around 130 calories for 15 chips.  Also a much healthier substitute for the junk that you'll see many of your classmates munching on.

Health & Support colposcopy Dec 31 2008

Your doctor can tell which strains of HPV you have from your pap smear.  If you did not have one of the high risk strains, you would not need a colposcopy.  I have had a few of these over the years, before I stopped testing positive for HPV, and although it wasn't totally awesome, it didn't really bother me that much.  It doesn't really hurt if they take a biopsy, it's more like you just feel some pressure.  It's only a very small sample that they take, and it is really nothing to worry about if they do take one.  It is mostly just erring on the side of caution.  I sometimes felt like I had mild cramps for the rest of the day after the colp. but nothing more then that.  This procedure is to ensure that you and your cervix stay healthy and you'll get used to it, just like having a pap smear!

Health & Support has anyone ever heard of this? Aug 07 2008

I have heard of this and also have experienced it personally.  I used to very very mentally unhealthy and after taking many medications, became morbidly obese as well.  Now I am a graduate student studying to be a therapist.  One thing that my research focuses on is treatment programs that focus less on medications and more on helping patients to get their bodies to work for them naturally.

Basically, the psychotropic medications are a very crude substitute for the way your brain would naturally regulate itself.  When your brain is exposed to chronic stress is can cause actual shrinkage of the brain and other types of damage.  Additionally, depressed people typically are nutrient deficient, which causes all sorts of other physical problems including weight gain.  Diet and exercise may not be enough for everybody, but it really has been proven to go a long way in getting the body and brain back to normal functioning!

Health & Support antidepressants Aug 07 2008

I gained a lot of weight when I was on anti-depressants.  I never found anything that really helped me maintain or lose weight.  Wellbutrin did help me lose some weight, but I was so sped up on it that it was mentally unhealthy for me to continue taking it.  Topamax is also supposed to cause weight loss, but it is nick named "dope-amax" because it has the unpleasant side effect of causing decreased cognitive ability.

The bottom line is, if you are not mentally healthy, you will have a very hard time being physically healthy.  Talk with your psychiatrist about your concerns and see what he/she has to say about it.  In my opinion, if you need the antidepressants to function normally, going off of them may just make you gain more weight because depressed people typically lack motivation to exercise.

Therapy helped me a great deal, to the point where I no longer need any medications at all, not even for sleeping issues.  If you are not in therapy, you might want to try and see if you can work on some of your issues to the point where the medications become less necessary.  At this point, it might be safe to consider slowing going off of them.

Health & Support Can a laxative cause this? Aug 06 2008
13:23 (UTC)
6

It is possible that this was caused by the laxative.  You might try reading the box for some more information about the common side effects of the particular medicine you took or what to do in the event of an overdose.

In any case, diarrhea and vomiting both make you very dehydrated, so try to get water down if you can.  At this point, it seems like this is the third day you have been sick, so I would recommend going to a doctor or the emergency room to get checked out.  When you do see a physician, bring the laxatives you took with you so that the doctor can figure out what may have caused all of this.

I hope you feel better soon!

Weight Loss Heart rate and calorie burn? Jul 30 2008
13:29 (UTC)
1

You burn the most amount of calories when you get your heart rate up really high, like over 150.  Most people don't have the endurance to do an hour of exercise where their heart rate stays between 150-165 the whole time, so heavy (but safe and properly done) weight lifting is a good alternative.  It doesn't actually matter how heavy you lift, it just matters that you are close to the maximum amount that YOU can do.

I doubt you are burning as many calories as your heart rate monitor says.  30 minutes on the treadmill really should, at most, burn around 300-400 cals unless you are sprinting the whole time.

Motivation So far, so good Jul 30 2008
13:23 (UTC)

I have been on calorie count for 9 months.  I went to try on wedding dresses last October and I was so big that they couldn't get some of the dresses around me.  The sales girls just had to hold them up in front of me and tell me to imagine that's what it would look like.  I never want to feel that way again, especially not at my wedding, which is in 1 1/2 months!  I've lost 61 pounds since that horrible day in October and 82 pounds since my all time highest weight.  I plan to continue the diet after the wedding and lose another 23 pounds to get down to my goal of 125!

Knowing how far I have come and how physically strong I am now because of all of the hard exercise is what motivates me to keep going and reach my final goal.

Fitness Armpit flab! Jul 30 2008
12:09 (UTC)

Part of what can make this area look worse is also a badly fitted bra or corset.  Especially when you sit down, the garment that doesn't fit you properly pushed up your breasts in a very awkward way, and this also accentuates the arm pit flab.  I learned this when I was in a lingerie shop getting a garment to go underneath my wedding dress.

Whenever you buy new bras - or whatever you use for breast support, try on the bra, and then sit down in front of the mirror and check out the situation from that angle too.  Another safe way to go about this is to have an experienced sale girl measure you and assist you finding bras that really fit you.

Of course, my arm pit flab has also started to disappear over the time that I have lost 80 pounds....  Some of it is skin, but some of it is definitely fat!

It's really funny that you wrote that because abs are always difficult for me to get through as well.  I carry my excess fat almost solely in my abdomen, but since I know you can't "spot burn" fat just by working those muscles, there's not much motivation there for me to do it!

Motivation Longest Plateau? Jul 29 2008

Hi There,

My longest plateau was a horrible 2 months.  I mean, I would fluctuate by around 5 pounds, but just when it seemed like I was finally losing, it would come back again.  I have lost 80 pounds so far and I think I was just below my body's natural "set point".  Many people on this site gave me the advice of giving my body time to readjust to my new size.  The worst mistake you can make is to starve yourself.  In fact, I actually started eating higher fat foods, although no carbs (think roast chicken) and that's what finally got me losing again!

Fiber is definitely the way to go on this one, and the more natural the source is, the better.  Whole grains, especially bran, as well as prunes or prune juice usually get things moving for most people.  You can also try metamucil, which is gross, but pretty safe to use on a regular basis.

Since you are a teen, if this problem is persistent, it is probably wise that you go see your doctor, just to make sure everything is OK.

Motivation Unrealistic hopes Jul 29 2008

There is no easy way to solve this problem other then to tell yourself over and over again that rapid weight loss and healthy are NOT the same thing.  To be healthy and fit, you need to lose weight slowly and consistently and then maintain a healthy lifestyle for the rest of your life.  If you want to get healthy, you have to change your whole life, but none of that can start until you change your attitude.

Instead of getting frustrated that you haven't lost 10 pounds this week, set realistic goals that you can actually reach.  This will give you motivation to keep going and reach the next goal.  I also built rewards into my plan (started at 230, now 150).  I would buy pants that were a size too small and try them on once a week until they fit and I got to wear them.  Finally fitting into those pants was always a wonderful feeling!

In terms of weight goals, set something really manageable like 1-2 pounds per week.  Easy goals equals more feelings of success.  More feelings of success equals more motivation.

I can really relate to your post.  What you wrote about just feeling like "this is your life" was exactly how I felt for my entire life up until recently.  I had tried every diet and had been overweight since childhood.  My all time high came a few years ago at 230lbs.  Now I am 150lbs.  Looking back on all of my diets, the one thing they all had in common was that I never really stuck with them.  I would eat healthy and exercise for a few months, get down to a better size, although still not healthy, and then quit.  This time I finally just stuck with the healthy foods (calorie counting very strictly) and exercise plan and over the past year or so, I have lost 80 pounds.  It didn't ever get easier for me and I am still trying to lose another 20 pounds.  It is hard every day to stay on the wagon, but I know I can get there eventually and that is what keeps me going.

If you are anything like me, you've fallen off of the wagon enough times to last you a lifetime.  Even when you have a crappy day or over eat, just get up the next day and start over.  No one is perfect and you have to forgive yourself for the bad days.  Just stick with it and you will see the results soon enough!

Fitness I need to tone my arms in 43 days...help! Jul 28 2008

I have also been getting in shape for my wedding and have a strapless dress and previously flabby arms.  As part of my work out routine, I started using the indoor rowing machine for 30 minutes, a few times per week.  My arms are no longer flabby and I have  lost a very significant amount of shoulder and back fat.  This exercise is low impact and great cardio as well.  I bet if you do it 5 times per week until your wedding, you'll be happy with the results.

Safina, this sounds like one of those questions you really need to answer for yourself.  Yes the guy is a hard worker and knows his stuff, but is he the right guy for YOU?  Sounds to me like you are already having some doubts, otherwise you would not have posted here.  I know it sucks to fire someone who does a good job, but if he's not the right fit for you, why waste your hard earned money?  So, think about what is best for you, and then go with that!!

Health & Support cervical cancer Jun 17 2008
16:40 (UTC)

Almost 95% of cervical cancer is caused by HPV (human papilloma virus) that is gone unnoticed and untreated.  HPV only causes genital warts in a small percentage of the people who have it, as there are over 100 strains of HPV and only a few of them cause warts.  If you are young and healthy, and have had an abnormal pap smear, chances are you might be in the 85% of people in their 20's who have HPV.

Here's the good news:  A young healthy person can fight off the virus, although it will lay dormant in your system forever, as it is a virus.  For most people, you just need to go back for a pap smear every 6 months for a few years and eventually your tests will start coming back normal.  If they do find abnormal cells, they have a very simple and relatively painless outpatient procedure that removes them.  You have it and just get up and can walk out and drive yourself home.

Even though HPV is a sexually transmitted disease, it really is not a big deal for most people and will not cause a lot of problems as long as you get regular pap smears.  Taking a folic acid supplement has also been known to help fight the virus.  It is also extremely contagious and you can get it even if you are using protection!  If you do indeed have HPV, you should disclose this to your partners before engaging in sexual contact with them.

I sincerely hope that your test was just wrong, and you are perfectly healthy.  Try not to stress yourself out too much until you hear back from the doctor.

Health & Support Sick Jun 17 2008
16:27 (UTC)

It sounds like some sort of food poisoning.  Different people react differently to things, so just because your husband didn't get sick, doesn't entirely rule out you getting sick from eating the same thing.  Did you eat or drink anything out of the ordinary?  Even water at your training or anything like that?

I don't know where you live, but there are a few weird contamination things going on around the U.S.  In Maryland a water main broke and many people have to boil their water right now.  I live in Florida and there has been a huge tomato recall because most of the tomatoes in the state have been contaminated with salmonella.

If you don't start to feel better pretty soon, call a doctor or head to the emergency room, just to be safe!

Health & Support Losing Weight Scares Me Jun 17 2008

The boards on this site can be a great place to get motivated or even just vent when you've had a rough day!

As far as your weight loss goes, since you have had a previous struggle with an eating disorder and still are dealing with a mental disorder, my best advice to you is to seek medical supervision for your diet.  Many bariatric clinics offer the support of a nutritionist, fitness expert, psychologist, as well as multiple physicians to attend to the health problems that are common with obese patients.  Since you are 100 pounds overweight, if you have health insurance, you may be able to get visits to a clinic of this kind covered, at least partially.  If this is not an option, I highly suggest you find some way to have your diet and exercise plan supervised by a professional.  This way, you can keep on track with what they tell you is healthy for where you are instead of just guessing on your own.  A professional will also know what the warning signs of an eating disorder are and will know when to tell you to seek treatment, especially if you tell them ahead of time that you had dealt with anorexia in the past.

Good Luck to you!  Please post on the boards anytime you feel that you need support!  This website is WONDERFUL!

Hey Everyone, Thanks for all of the suggestions!

Sillybilly - I am almost positive it's not iron deficiency.  I had this before and was treated, now I take daily supplements and also eat a large spinach salad almost every night for dinner!

Undertherainbow - Thanks for the info!  I was not aware of that!  I will increase my calories to 1500 and see how that works.

Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to respond!

I moved across the country last year with my fiance for his job and even though I'm in graduate school, I still don't have very many friends!  Money is also tight since I am in school full time.  In the past 8 months (since I bought my wedding dress) I've lost 54 pounds.  Basically, I spent my days alone, waiting for him to come home and entertain me and doing mountains of homework.  I took all the "I don't have friends or anywhere to go" free time and put it into diet and exercise!  Don't worry if your boyfriend can't stick with you.  You CAN'T change him, he needs to change HIMSELF.  Just do what you know you need to do to change your life and your body for the better and eventually he'll catch up with you!

rmgarcia - My experience is similar to what you are describing.  Sometimes it will happen everyday, even multiple times per day, and then it won't happen at all for a while.  It happens more often when I am already really tired or not feeling well.

I did speak with a few doctors who are friends and family.  They all said the same thing...basically, if you want to get it checked out for peace of mind, you can, but it's probably nothing.

Foods Does my diet suck or is it OK? Jun 14 2008

It's great that you are concerned about this, because at your age, you are still growing and it's important that you get all the essential vitamins and nutrients.  One hole in your diet that I can see is whole grains.  White bread doesn't give you much in the way of vitamins or fiber, which is really important.  Try eating whole grain bread, oatmeal, things like that..

Also, essential fatty acids - actually promote a healthy metabolism and also make your hair shiny!  Some fish is higher in it then others, so look into the kinds of fish you like and eat those!  If that's not an option, you can buy fish oil capsules, eat avocado, products with flax seeds or flax seed oil (also available in capsules).

Dark leafy greens.  Very good for you as well!  Depending on how often you eat it, the yogurt may or may not be giving you enough calcium.  So more calcium for a variety of foods may be something to consider as well.

You don't have to eat all of these things all of the time, but it's good to get them fairly often.  Worst case scenario, you can also take a daily multivitamin, but since you're only 15, it's wise to consult a doctor before starting any dietary supplements - just to be on the safe side!

Sounds to me a little bit like your mother is not very confident about herself, and it makes her feel better to cut you down.  This does not mean that she doesn't love you.  It just means that people act in crazy ways when they feel insecure and threatened.  If you, her daughter, were able to lose weight, while she is not able to, it would mean that you are growing up and are now able to take care of yourself...and do a better job of it then she can!  Don't let your mom get you down!  I know it's hard because she's your mom, and also because you live with her, but it will be worth it for your health and peace of mind in the end!

That sounds horrible!  It's bad enough that your friend is dealing with ED, but now she's stuck in a treatment program where they don't even take her illness seriously?!

I have not had an ED, I am a graduate student training to be a therapist.  I have not met one single student, doctor, or professor who thinks that ED's are a choice.  Yes, you can make a choice to start adopting unhealthy behaviors, but once it gets out of control, it really is a disease.  ED's can also lead to other very serious mental problems (depression, self mutilation, substance abuse, body image issues, etc.).  Everyone I know takes ED's very seriously as they can quickly turn from an attempt at weight loss to a life threatening situation.

I really hope your friend gets out of that place and into a better program that takes her condition seriously!

I agree with the above poster, the point here is:  Life isn't going to stop just because you're on a diet.  You can have cake once in a while and it does not mean you will stay overweight.  I have been on a strict diet for the past 7 months and have lost 51.5 pounds.  I eat between 1200-1300 calories during the week and then on the weekend I go out with my fiance for a nice dinner.  Indulging once per week after being good for the whole work week has actually HELPED me stay on track.  If you deny yourself everything, you'll never be able to stay on track.  Eat what you love, in moderation, and learn to be happy with just a taste of chocolate instead of a whole bar....for me that has been the secret to weight loss long term.
