Just googled your topic and found some merit for their consumption. The info wasn't at the beginning of the article, though. Had to look w-a-y down to find it. Seems there is real value in their consumption, especially when made into a drink.

Keep us informed about your dog and get in touch with that vet if she's not absolutely ok. Peanut butter is our favorite for smearing on pills. Our dogs like it so much that they swallow it down and never separate it from the pill and then spit it out while they eat the cheese, weiner, bit of bread. or such. None of our dogs have ever refused peanut butter if it wasn't really sick.

Weight Loss 28 day Low Fat vegan challenge anyone? Aug 04 2009

Didn't post foods allowed because I didn't want to take up more space than I already did. Foods that were allowed included any that were not on the list with an emphasis on brown rice, oatmeal, and other grains with the exception of wheat and corn, white and sweet potatoes, beans, peas, all low calorie vegetables, and most fruits and melons.

Since finishing the 28 day regimen I have reintroduced bananas, apples, tomatoes, onions, corn, and nuts with no problems and plan to try wheat (bread) tomorrow followed by citrus on Friday. I will also test chocolate two days later although I have never eaten much of it anyway. At the present time I am highly inclined to stay vegetarian although it might be a good idea to test the meat, dairy, and egg groups to see if any of them are triggering any unwanted reactions.

Eliminating foods known to cause allergic reactions in some people and then reintroducing them one by one while watching to see if reactions occur is an accepted practice in medicine. My doctor knows what I am trying this and will be delighted if I can get rid of my arthritic pain by diet change rather than by taking pain killers. If i decide to not reintroduce meats and dairy products he will give me a prescription for Vitamin B 12, the only nutrient known to be lacking in a vegetarian diet.

I am not worried that being vegetarian is going to put me in any danger of not having a healthy diet and doing something that is going to harm my health. A doctor first urged me to go vegetarian 30 years ago. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventists, a group known as vegetarians and who happen to have the longest life span of any group of people in the United States (at least the last time I saw reports along this line). Also, Dr. Dean Ornish, a well-known vegetarian, proved that, with a vegetarian diet along with moderate exercise and stress reducing changes, heart disease can be reversed. Plaque blockages in the arteries can actually be dissolved without drugs or surgery and by diet and lifestyle changes!

Am I willing to make those changes? You bet I am! If I can use food that not only relieves my aches and pains but also helps to heal my body instead of just masking the symptoms as do pain killers, i am going to go with the foods. The program I am following is detailed in the book FOODS THAT FIGHT PAIN by Dr. Neal D. Barnard , one of the top nutritional experts in the country and is with the George Washington University School of Medicine. Thanks for all your comments and for those of you who were wondering. For the record I'm 76 years old, no diabetes, but a scrape with melanoma from living in high sun areas, and an injured knee that keeps me at the present a bit immobile. When the x-rays showed thinning cartilage and the doctor said arthritis was the cause of various pains I was feeling and prescribed pain medication, I decided to try another way.

All you younger people out there....find out all you can about anything out there and then don't be afraid to try a better way. If you decide to make major changes the first two to three weeks are the worst. After that habit kicks in and it's not so tough.

Just got off 28 days of a low fat vegan regimen that also eliminated bananas, apples, citrus, all corn and wheat products, onions, nuts, all dairy products, eggs, all meat and fish. I did this in an effort to eliminate pain by leaving off these foods as they are the most common foods known to trigger pain associated with migraines and arthritis. Now I am in the process of adding them back, one every other day to see which ones are safe for me. If I experience no pain, I am to keep that food as part of my diet. If pain occurs, I am to check it out a couple of weeks later before deciding to exclude it for good. The plan also strongly suggests leaving off all fish and meats, eggs, and dairy products because of the harm they do to the body.

I had little trouble following the diet in spite of having to cook regular meals (meats etc.) for my husband. All the pains I had been experiencing disappeared in the first few days and haven't come back. I also feel much better than I did before starting this diet. I plan to continue on the vegan plan and not reintroduce meats and fish, dairy products, and eggs and limit sugar and most fats. I still haven't reintroduced wheat, citrus, and chocolate and am hoping they will be OK. If wheat turns out to be a no go, I'll have to turn to my Vita Mix machine and grind other grains that test out as creating no problem (such as flax seed, rye, barley, etc.) and bake my own bread using my bread machine. I only wish I had switched to vegetarian when I started hearing about these things years ago.

Kieslings! way to go on your trip to Utah and the Grand C! Lived on the South Rim 3 years and loved it!

Not gaining in the weight department. Still not freely mobile but did manage a 10 minute stroll with the dogs last night so felt good about that. Also feel really great about NOT gaining any for this time of knee injury. Being responsible for posting on this site is highly motivating in keeping me on track.

Thank goodness I am maintaining and not gaining! Two more weeks of this elimination diet and I can start reintroducing foods to see what are allergy-pain triggers-----Have certainly missed tomatoes------they had been a mainstay in many of our favorite dishes------also citrus fruits, wheat, and other grain products, also even bananas! Thank goodness for oatmeal, brown rice, and low calorie vegetables, but I do feel at a loss with the limitations when cooking. Rehurt the knee so I can't rush its healing. Patience and limited activity have to be my focus for now.

Keep going, you other people. You can do it!

This morning the scales had me back down to just 0.7 above my maintenance number so maybe most of last week's "gain" was water and not that my scales are just being erratic. Sometimes Ihave suspected they vary with the humidity. Am i nuts for thinking that?

Weight UP 3 lbs this week. Would say that my metabolism has slowed to a crawl. However am now able to get through the house without a walker and that should help a bit. The 3 pounds? Am hoping part of that is water. If not, I'm in for a long haul.

Is your Dr. Cooper the same as the PhD Robert K. Cooper ? I'm almost certain they are the same. I have two or three of his and his wife's books, one of which - FLIP THE SWITCH - is absolutely fantastic! It's all about revving up your metabolism and is based on strategies that about everyone could use. It's great you two are there!

I am way over in left field but would like to join with an odd set of conditions.

At the present time because of an injury that is going to take a lengthly time to heal I cannot commit to any exercise program that would be necessary for losing a sustained amount of weight. Yet I do not want to gain weight during my time of immobility. For the motivation and commitment belonging to a group brings I would like to join with all of you in my effort to keep on track TO NOT GAIN ANY WEIGHT between now and Labor Day.

I would weight in each week and record any gains, OR LOSES, I might experience. Also iI pledge to you my best efforts to succeed in maintaining, and hopefully even losing, during the time of your challenge.

The best to all of you.
Foods How do YOU get fiber in your diet? May 24 2009

All the suggestions above are right on target, especially the dried beans which generally contain the largest amount of fiber of any food, averaging around 7-9 g. per half cup serving and can put your fiber grams up there which otherwise can sometimes be slow adding up.

This may not be helpful at all because I have no idea if ANY or NO restaurants post calorie counts but the original post stated the writer did not do WW and had no idea "how many calories = how many points". Several years ago when I was a member of WW I checked out literally dozens and dozens of recipes and found that in almost ALL instances about 50 calories equaled 1 point. Hope this helps.

We've been fortunate enough to have had 7 dogs to call our own during our lifetime: each was perfect, each was love, each occupied a very special place, truly a part of our family. Our lives are the richer, having shared their presence. I would choose no other.

I love to think of this one when interactions with family sometimes get a bit grating:

"Your friends are God's way of apologizing for your relatives."

And if things have truly gotten out of hand, this is what to always remember:

Do you want peace? Forgiveness offers it. Do you want happiness, a quiet mind, a certainty of purpose, and a sense of worth and beauty that transcends the world?

Do you want a quietness that cannot be disturbed, a gentleness that can never be hurt, a deep abiding comfort, and a rest so perfect it can never be upset?

All this forgiveness offers you.

Doesn't sound like he is following his own advice if he is eating goldfish and cheezits all day. But then it's very difficult to take advice from anyone when it is something you don't want to hear, especially your mate. I don't want to take advice EVEN FROM MYSELF, otherwise why do I continue to eat things I know I shouldn't and otherwise engage in harmful behaviors I would do better without.

My advice would be do what you know is best for youself, making as little an issue of it as possible. Buy and prepare what you know is best, keeping comments about nutritional value and what you both should be eating to yourself. After all, action speaks louder than words and when he sees you achieve your goals while he is falling behind he MIGHT wake up.

This hasn't worked for me....I HAVEN"T followed my own advice. I'm forever telling my family what would be good for us all to eat, and they continue to eat just as they please, usually what I, myself, bought and brought home!

Just posting this to say I'm sorry for your dog's injury and the vet bill and I suppose also to just get something off my chest. I don't trust that my dogs are ever absolutely safe from other dogs. Here is why.

We have two Shih Tzu puppies, house dogs for sure, and never outside when not on a leash-even to get in the car. I take them out and we are sauntering along toward our woodpile when a neighbor and his grandson come across the hill (our property) and head toward our garden (wintertime-so nothing is planted) accompanied by a pack of about 25 hunting dogs, yelping and running in all directions.

Our puppies ( so pampered and sheltered that they don't even know they are dogs) immediately go wild, barking and jerking on their leashes as one of the hunting dogs heads our way. I snatch up our little male to quiet him, but leave Susy down because I can't hold them both and I figure she is safe as I have heard male dogs won't atrtack females. WRONG!!! He jumped on her, attacking and biting as I stared in fear, afraid he would kill her and expecting the rest of the pack to join the fight at any time. I put my boy dog down so he could help Susy and me fight as I was by now kicking at the hunter dog with all my might and screaming at the neighbor man to get his dog away.

Soon the grandson ran up, yelling and calling at his dog, and thankfully after a bit his dog quit fighting and ran back to the man and the pack. I told the boy that my dogs didn't know how to behave around other dogs and to take his dogs and leave and we didn"t allow hunting on our land anyway. They left, crossing on over our garden to a DIFFERENT neighbor"s field with the boy not saying another word and the neighbor man not even looking around. They haven't been back and I haven't had occasion to talk to them since. I am glad because, although I have no hard feeling toward the grandson, I would have great difficulty even speaking to the man.

It's always hard to deal with your dog getting hurt. I hope things are resolved and your dog can play with other dogs in peace.

My thoughts are that we can't have a NATIONAL discussion about ANYTHING without BLAME.......It seems to me that any number of people, whether of a nation, a state, a family, even as few as just two persons, in contact with each other long enough, will soon find areas of disagreement, and , when faced with the real threat of losing something highly valued or not, almost always resort to BLAME.

In times of great national peril, as in during World War II, we, as Americans saw clearly beyond smaller, often petty differences and worked together for our nation's good. Are our present problems so big now that we can't solve them? Would we as citizens of numerous little independent states suddenly find ourselves living with no one who disagreed with us? Do we really want to chop our country apart and face as individual political units all the perils stronger powers would gladly heap upon us?

Is not unity of nation and the commitment from each of us to work to our utmost to solve our differences the better way? Should we not join with those who want to work to make our life, our country, and our world a better place to live? Is this not high enough purpose for all? Do we have to about lose what we have before we can value it?

AND, are we strengthening those with personal agendas who would destroy our nation by giving UNDUE audience to their rantings?
