You bring up a good point. For me, its about going as far towards vegetarian, (actually vegan being my final goal) as I possibly can. Vegan cooking takes lots of time and creativity and money-two of which I do not have. But being very drawn to animal rights and having a compassionate mind towards animals and their suffering I want to and am trying to move closer and closer to no meat at all. I do eat fish and rarely some chicken. I do not call myself a vegetarian though because that would be a lie. I call myself 'trying like hell to get there'. I do not believe that fish don't suffer. I do believe they suffer. I just am not able to get all the way to vegetarian yet. (I sound really guilty, don't I? I am) |

Never really told anyone about this but being it's to people I don't really know I guess I can let it out. Not funny at all. I went to a Catholic school first and second grade. Sister Mary Carroll, the nun from hell, used to beat us with a ruler on the back of our hands and knees. remember my knuckles bleeding severl times. Scared the piss out of me, literally-- quite often--which made school miserable as a whole for me. That was back when they wore the long black dresses and long veils. She filled my nightmares as a kid and no one would believe that this respected nun was smacking the holy crap out of us. Yeah, teachers don't get much worse than her. Wanted to get a hold of her as an adult and at least tell her what a monster she was to us but the school closed down and I never found her. Always hoped she went to an old nun's home where they treated her with the same good religion that she did us. |

I love all dogs...all animals for that matter! I have two super spoiled dogs. One black lab mix, one choc. lab mix. Both make me so happy to come home each day. It amazes me how much joy they can bring to a persons life. |

I have found it helps to eat often but eat the really low cal stuff--have it around in plenty. Fresh veggies, fruits or low cal snacks. Indulge a little with the low cal stuff that is not so much as healthy but will keep you on track like low fat or fat free ice cream (one serving). It does indeed take time to get used to eating smaller portions and you have to be determined about doing this so perseverence is the key. But one thing I know. It does help to have good stuff around and even stuff that is not health food that will get you through a craving or urge that is low in cals. It also helps to look at the cals as a budget like finances. You have so much to spend each day, count it out by buying 'afordable' foods and don't have the unaffordable ones around. |

I'm pretty busy but jane is right, the raw veggies and whole, uncooked foods are cheap and also healthy. I throw a bunch of cabbage, and other various veggies in my slow cooker on the weekends and have lots for the week. I make that cabbage soup often because it has become a comfort food for me. Just onion, cabbage, carrots, peas, ect. Once and awhile I throw a potato in there too. Or some rice. That ups the cals but it is still a nice healthy veg soup. Requires some chopping but otherwise it's all into the pot and thats it. Beans are very healthy but high cal. Stll, I mix some of them in with salads or other veggie dishes. Very cheap. Frozen veggies too are not expensive and not unhealthy. Most have no preservatives and provide the vitamins. Also rice cakes are cheap and a little peanut btter and low sugar jam goes a long way on one to ease a sweet craving. Fruit that is in harvest also. Frozen fruits are not terribly expensive and a bag can last a while if you toss a few berries in salads or cerea. Another thing I have recently come upon is oatmeal. I have learned to like it and it is very healthy, not too high on cals, and cheap as can be. A few berries...yeah, it's good too.

| Young Calorie Counters | 5'5-5'6 girls, what are your measurements..? | Sep 19 2009 20:49 (UTC) |

wouldn't the measurements depend on weight as well as frame, ect? I am a size 16/18 at 183 lbs. That does not seem to be normal from all I hear. I am a bigger size at my weight than anyone else. I am 42-38-46.-did not know that until just now measuring for this question. How freaking depressing! That sounds much bigger than it feels |

I don't-- and have to be honest, do not really understand it. Yes, I love my children--that is a very profound sort of love. I had a husband I loved very much. But the romantic/sexual side of it is not something I need or pine over not having. Maybe not everyone does need it. I understand enjoying it when it happens. But I do not understand looking for it, or not feeling whole without it. I've always thought maybe something is wrong with me.....But if you're happy, then isn't that the main thing. |

something happens to me when I hit the 195 mark. Like a panic sets in and this has happened twice. I lost it once and gained it back and went back up. It's the highest I have ever gone and the only help that works is cal. count. Now down to 183 and hoping to get to 145 |

I don't like disagreeing especially on these forums, but really I do think some of the symptoms you describe need to be addressed and treated. "Don't worry about it" is a non helpful and not completely honest reply to a really disturbing list of issues you put forth. The one that stands out the most is the never having fun no matter what you do. This speaks of a flatness, if not depression, a non feeling--numbness--and if it is constant then it is, indeed, a problem you should deal with. Not having empathy for others is not a small thing despite some of the replies. And no, it is not living at your best. Each issue you list, alone, seems to be common self obsession but put all together it does really sound like more than that. I hope you seek further input from a professional. |

| Weight Loss | Why is healthy eating so expensive? | Sep 07 2009 22:38 (UTC) |
37 |
I thought the same thing for a while and then I realized since I am not eating big quantities now spending a little more on healthy foods goes pretty far. Also there are actually some things that are not so expensive. Some examples are: Frozen fruits like blueberries and strawberries, peaches. Frozen fruit bars (real fruit). tuna (as already stated) Low sugar preserves (stuckers) tastes so good sara lee 45 cal per slice bread rice soups (light, low sodium) Selects are pretty healthy green tea, not much more than reg. All of the produce is healthy and priced ok when in season. Beans, good for you and cheap. Watch the cals though. I am vegetarian and buy morning star, not too bad if you consider you make a meal out of one or two patties. Fat free milk, same price as reg. Lovin spoonful ice cream, 100 cals of choc ice cream per serving -tastes great-low fat.

| Young Calorie Counters | How to lose 3 pounds a week? | Aug 31 2009 00:17 (UTC) |

The only way it works for me is to count all the calories I take in and not let it go over a certain amount. I try to stay within 1600 or there abouts and treat it like that is my budget and I cannot go over it. I have tried other ways, of not counting but eating healthy and it does not work because unless I count I over do. At first it is uncomfortable, but soon you get into the pattern of it and find things that make it easier. Find foods that allow you to enjoy a meal or sweets without going over your budget of cals. The only way I know of to lose weight is to burn more cals than you take in. And you want to do that in a healthy way at a good, reasonable pace. |

| The Lounge | Inbreeding crippled dogs. | Aug 29 2009 08:09 (UTC) |

Wow, I see your dilemma. I also love dogs (animals) a great deal and so I can understand how you must be feeling. I think it comes down to what will be best for the dogs in the long run. Breeding unhealthy dogs and bringing more dogs into a household that cannot afford good medical care or to provide for them is not what is good for the animals. As stated above, affordable spaying is available if a person looks and cares to do the right thing. I do think it's more than these people not being able to pay for spaying. It is not difficult to understand why you should not let a dog inbreed with her own pups. A little bit of logic should have guided these people to not let it happen. So there is an element of neglect and ignorance there. Maybe they do love their dogs in their own way, however real love dictates responsibility for the animals well-being and that seems to be missing here. While it may be hard I think I would call someone or at the very least bring it up to them (if you feel you can) Them keeping the five dogs would be best because it is unlikely to find homes for them, but allowing the inbreeding to go on and no spaying to take place is abuse on their part, even if they do not understand that is what they are doing. This a difficult situation and you are between a rock and a hard place. I feel for you because the more you love animals the more you feel responsible when you see these sorts of things. Wish you luch and grace with the whole thing |

It's been really great for me too. I find it is the only thing that really has worked and I need to stick with it as a lifestyle, using the tools to keep up. After I lost nearly fifty lbs I stopped coming here and slowly put it all back on. Now I am back for good. I know now I have to keep up in order to maintain as well as lose. Glad you posted. 5'5, 188. Very active job. Lots of walking, lifting. I am shooting for 1400 to 1600 but have mostly been 1700 1800. So it sort of varies in that wide range. I eat a lot of little meals during the day which helps and am finding many good things that are low cal. One new discovery is fruit bars which are only 80 cals and really do curb a sweet urge. How about you? |

Well, I have a tub drain backing up with weird gook in it...everything I've tried seems to make it worse. Snaked it, draino, industrial strength cleaner with lye. The next step is a plumber, which I can't afford but will have to find a way to afford it anyway because I cannot go without a shower. Whew, that felt good! There you have it. Otherwise life is super good...so all things considered, I am a pretty stinking happy person. :) |

I am amazed at how much this varies form one person to the next. I am 188 now and still in a 16, 18. It seems most of you guys are in a 12 14 at my weight and height (5'5). That really bites for me! :) My goal is a 12 and that was when I was about 160 or so I wonder why it can be so different from one person to another. This was an interesting post. |

Original Post by jcl76: For me, like I said, it's about how I feel. Your original post was pretty uppity on the subject. How you can't understand how women do not want to 'put anything AT ALL into their appearance" and I think the replies you've gotten pretty much address the attitude in which the original post came off. Reread your post. It sounds pretty darn judgemental! Yes, I care about hygene. Of freaking course I shave me legs and pits! But there is a vast difference to me in basic hygene, being clean and smelling good, and putting stuff on your face. To me, it makes my face feel dirty, I feel stupid with it on and it HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH NOT CARING HOW I LOOK BECAUSE I DO CARE. I love simple, clean, quality fabric in my clothing and I love shampoos and rinses that make my hair shine. I love a white smile. Clean is lovely to me. I care very much how I look and yes, these are things I would indeed do at home myself. Make up, in any form, is not me. To me that does not enhance. That DOES NOT MEAN I AM NOT "PUTTING ANY EFFORT INTO MY APPEARANCE AT ALL". However, I am not very much focused on if someone is wearing eyeliner or lipstick either. |

Because not everyone is that into appearances. Not to say it's wrong or shallow, but not everyone wants to focus on that. I, for one, focus on how I feel and make up does nothing to make me feel good about myself. I love perfumes, lotions, being clean and smelling nice but putting stuff on my face makes me feel phony, unclean (especially with foundations and powders). I know i don't speak for everyone, but it is a matter of what makes me feel good. And if I were to use those cosmetics that I really hate, it would be for someone else (like those who might judge people who don't wear make up just like they do) and not for my own comfort or happiness. And that is just not ever going to happen. I am too old to give a crap who is judging me for something that silly |
