Foods Protein powder the way to go? Jan 04 2008

i am vegan and I think a lot about protein too. I went into a vitamin store and asked someone who worked there what would be the best for me. I was directed to a powder that I use for smoothies that is crammed full of protein(not whey protein though) and also full of vitamins. It wouldn't hurt you to try that. Also Peanut butter is awesome for protein but too much of that a day isn't good for  you. They say 2 TBSP a day is good. I don't know if you eat the veggie hot dogs but those are full of protein...one jumbo sized one has 17grams and a normal sized one is 9 or 11? Not sure on that one. If you eat a lot of the fake meat products you will notice that most of them have a pretty decent protein count. But the smoothie mix protein powder is not a bad idea. Actually I'll tell you the name of the one i have....ok i don't know what stores are around you but I got it at The Vitamin shoppe(maybe a website?) and it is nature's Plus Energy-the universal protein. It has no flavor you have to add fruit or juice and milk or water...it's only 70 calories and has 16 grams of protein. No fat, 2 carbs, 150mg sodium and potasium, and a big list of vitamins including b6 and b12 100% (those are other vitamins you need to watch...iron too) Well sorry for the long post hopefully this helps some!

To Pandajen19  I did not know that lack of sleep can actually make you feel hungry when you are notl I will definitely make sure to watch how I eat and stay at my normal calorie count. The past couple nights I have been counting from midnight to midnight(cause that is what this site does and i do log my food and activity) and I noticed that works out better for me. That way I can eat a little healthy snack or so through the night and then figure out how many calories are left for the day...and during the day I don't get too hungry and it has been working out a lot better. I can manage my calorie count and keep it where it should be this way. I can also eat at night when I feel hungry and during the day when I usually eat cause I know i need to I can do the "fast" thing then. I guess it is the same as a normal persons day except mine works backwards....thanks for the info!

No actually I haven't and I now plan on mentioning it to my doctor. I'm surprised I haven't. I have tried so many sleep meds it is crazy. I'm on the best combination I can find right now but my insomnia cycles from horrible no sleep to a few hours--which i can live on no problem. I will definitely talk to my doctor about it though and see what he thinks. It works alright for you?

Thanks for your input. I like your ideas. I plan on trying a combination of ideas from these replies. I am awake more than the average person. I truly sleep only 0-5 hours...some nights i don't sleep at all. It does make all this confusing. But I'm very happy you guys opened my eyes up to the fact that I am burning more calories and should consume more healthy ones...it may not solve my annoying sleeping problem but I won't starve or binge from trying not to eat. Now i just need to figure out how many calories I do burn being awake than if i was asleep...oh boy...a projectTongue out
Weight Loss How do I add my tagged foods to make a recipe from them? Dec 27 2007

I know how to tag it but since I use items that they can't find on their list my nutrition is incomplete. What I'd like to do is add already tagged items into my recipe because i added them in myself and they have the proper nutrition values.
Weight Loss Does cutting calories give anybody else insomnia and the jitters? Dec 27 2007

The "Jitters" is most likely a drop in blood sugar. I know you are eating enough and getting enough calories but everybody's body is different and you may burn up that sugar faster. This is why people get jittery when not eating for a long time or even in the mornings. I would try some whole grain bread or peanut butter when this happens because it helps keep your blood sugar up for a longer amount of time...maybe try adding more of these foods into your diet if you already haven't. That would also most likely contribute to your trouble sleeping. They also sell these glucose tablets in the diabetic section at drug stores. They are made to raise your blood sugar quickly and solve that problem. I am borderline hypoglycemic(opposite of diabetes) and that is when i notice i get jitters...when my blood sugar drops

Jesus, that's smart. I don't believe this. I didn't think of low blood sugar. How caloric are the glucose tablets, and do they cause a spike? Should I just eat some molasses? Well, the thing is, I've been up all night and desperate to sleep, so I've drunk a glass of whole milk or something, and it takes a lot more than that to get me to sleep. I'd go back to bed, wait an hour, after drinking the milk (which is 150 cals and has tons of sugar) and still be up. If I had a banana, I'd still have insomnia. But if I ate, like, 500 calories in carbs, only then would I be able to go to sleep. Not tasty carbs; just plain bread or something. (I wouldn't be able to handle tasty carbs without bingeing). Could this mean I'm hypoglycemic? Could this be a consequence of the period in my life where I ate 2 pints of ice cream and 3 big bakery-sweets per day? That lasted around 8 months.

It is possible you are hypoglycemic but i doubt from the times you ate all that sugar. You could always get tested but everyone has hypoglycemic attacks and there isnt a "cure" except to eat smaller meals every few hours instead of a couple big ones. That just helps maintain your blood sugar. the glucose tablets I believe only have 5-10 calories and they are made for this sort of thing so the jump in sugar is not going to cause a huge crash as if you just ate plain sugar. Although the plain tbs of sugar would fix the issue I would suggest the tablets which are made for this sort of thing and also if you are not already like I said....eating 5-6 snacks a day high in fiber and protein helps more than you would think. It took me a week or 2 to truly notice the huge change but you may be surprised

Lilsmiter and kajikit...both thanks I really appreciate it. I never really added up the numbers of how many calories I'm burning. It is true I burn more especially if I give up on trying to sleep I will either type, read, play computer games....sometimes start some crazy project I won't finish or even go out and just hang out with a friend who calls and has trouble sleeping one night. I just had it stuck in my head you are not supposed to eat at night. But you are right....I am burning more...just make it healthy and don't over do it

Yes Thank you for you reply. I do see a therapist also and am on meds for anxiety and depression. But I still have the same problem you did...the insomnia still persist even after the depression is gone and the anxiety is calmed. I will definetely try the working out in the morning. I usually work out around 3-5 and working out does give me energy. In fact I have had people tell me to work out before I slept and I had to convince them it made things worse...maybe working out a few hours earlier would help if even a little.

I'm 5'7 128 and I still wear size 10's, it really all depends on where you loose your weight.

I completely agree. It all depends on your natural shape and bone formation(which you unfortunately can't change. I am 5'10 and at the moment 145 and wear 11's but when I was 130 I still wore anywhere from 7's to 11's...all depends on brands too
