I do this all the time. Its why I gained so much weight. What really helps me is water. If Im eating when I dont need to (say, right after a meal), I'll skull a few glasses of water. That fills me up pretty quick. Also (agreeing with above comments), get out of the kitchen! Its so hard to think clearly with good smelling food close by. Get out, and think about why you really do not want to eat it.
best of luck! |

Im starting week 5 this week as well. Im terrified of the 20 min jog as well. Im planning on just runnning the first 5 mins, then thinking "ok, we can make 8", then when I hit 8, Ill see how Im feeling. If I need a break, Ill walk for a minute, but I'll pause the music and NOT count it in the 20 mins. Either way, I will run a total of 20 mins. Im hoping to at least make 10-12 mins, and once I hit 15 mins I'll not want to give up, so I'll make it.
Good luck! Let me know how you go! |

| Health & Support | What We Hate About Being Skinny. | Nov 06 2008 03:31 (UTC) |

While I'm in now way 'skinny' (as in underweight skinny) any more, I remember allllll too well what I hated about it. 1. Being so cold that sitting in front of the heater, wearing 4 jumpers and holding the just boiled kettle didnt warm me up. 2. I couldnt make it to school without feeling like I was going to pass out 3. My best friends stopped asking me to go out with them coz they were sick of hearing "cant tonight, im too tired" 4. I was grumpy, and never ever smiled. I used to smile all the time. 5. I thought I was so pretty, so much better than every one else. WRONG. This is a good thread, maybe when people are having a rough time, we can come here are remember how much we DONT want to go back to being so thin. Good luck everyone! |

Im a gymnast, and on training days I'll eat about 600 extra cals, so I'll be at about 2000-2200. On non training (recovery) days Im at about 1500-1700 cals. I focus more on carbs and proteins rather than calories though. |

| Health & Support | Can stress ALONE cause weight gain? | Sep 11 2008 07:04 (UTC) |
|
Its good to know that stress can cause weight gain. Im doing my final year at school and with the massive exams looming ive been studying up to 10 hours a day and stressed beyond belief, and needless to say, ive gained about 15-20 pounds! Hopefully when this years over I'll be able to lose some of the extra weight, after the stress levels come back down! |

Thanks for your reply. I certainly can ask my coach about it, and he has a nutritionist coming in to talk to us at the end of the year, I just thought that some of the people on here could help me out. Thanks again for the reply! |

| Young Calorie Counters | whose an athlete and trying to lose weight? | Sep 04 2008 09:01 (UTC) |
|
Im an athlete, trying to slim down but not really lose weight. Im a gymnast, so I'm constantly exposed to the 'must be skinny to win' mindset, though Im much more conserned with gaining strength to safely attempt new skills and thus 'thin up' than loosing weight. While burning up to 1000 calories during sport, while restricting to lose weight, I've done serious damage to myself , and now am trying to avoid restrictly and just focusing on eating healthy and exercising. |

You didnt sound like a bitch, you sounded like someone who was telling the truth. I am focusing a lot on gymnastics and being healthy, its just sometimes i feel things at gym would be easier if i was light like my team mates. I understand Im not really 'big' in any way, just bigger than them. I guess once i get more strength behind me things will get easier. |

| Young Calorie Counters | are you overweight if your legs touch when you walk? | Jul 10 2008 01:13 (UTC) |

My thighs never used to touch when I had my eating disorder, but they do now. I feel overweight because of it, but I am in the middle of the healthy weight range, and Im fairly muscly everywhere else. I think its more rare to find someone whos thighs dont touch, in my opinion. |

Im trying really hard to keep my calories consistantly at 1600-1800, but I just cant do it, i keep slipping and restricting again, and as a result of this, Ive GAINED even more weight! I dont know whether I should just restrict again or up my cals and keep trying. I know everyone here has had successes, but (and I know this will sound stupid) I feel like IM different, like I cant eat that much without gaining. I know thats not logical, but then again, are eating disorders EVER logical? I think Im just looking for words of advice, anyone have any ideas on how to keep my cals up? |

Hey there, Im in the same boat as you. Ive heard that once your body realises youll be feeding it, not starving it, it stops holding onto food, and will start burning it again. I would suggest bumping up your cals (as scary as it is) to AT LEAST 1200, and while you will gain weight, once you can bump your cals up to a healthy amount, your body should start burning them again. I cant say how long it will take, Ive heard it ranges from 3-12 months depending on the length of starvation, but hey, it wont get better until you try! Keep going hun, you deserve so much more than a stupid disease, we all do. |

| Health & Support | What was the cause of your ED? | Mar 20 2008 10:56 (UTC) |

My mum always favoured my brother because he's been really sick most his life, and she didnt pay any attentions to my achievements (hense perfectionism). I learnt early on that her affection was best earnt through being sick, so I starved. Ballet was another factor, i put a lot of pressure on myself to be as thin as the other girls, and its making recovery difficult becuase Im still comparing myself. |

Hey, Im sorry your going through this as well, but it helps to know that someone else is going through the same thing. My water retention, if that is what it is, is from the knees up, not down though, but im pretty sure its not cellulite, i think its water, but i have no proof. Id be really interested to hear what your nutritionist has to say, and thanks for your advice, Ill give it a shot! |

Hey, For every day stuff I do sit ups, push ups, biscep (sp?) curls and tricep (sp?) dips. I do those every night before I go to bed. I also dance 3-4 times a week. Friday and saturday nights I take my dog for an hours walk, then go into my'workout room' and spend a few hours just mucking around, doing pilates, dancing, strength work etc. Im working really hard to gain muscle so I can slim down but not lose weight, and Im really hoping to get a six pack soon. =) |

| Maintaining | I just don't understand anymore | Feb 27 2008 10:23 (UTC) |

I know how you feel. Im gaining on 1200-1300 a day, up from 400 per day. I dont know why Im gaining (so fast too! 10 pounds in a week!) but its pretty scary ... and I hope it goes away soon, coz I dont want to gain any more weight, I'd even like to loose some the healthy way once things start leveling off. I think its got something to do with our metabolism still being asleep. I think of it as a sleeping lion .... if you just poke it gently with a stick, it wont fully wake up, but if you say ... drop a brick on its head, it not only wakes up, but it wakes up roaring. OK, that was lame lmao. But the way I understand it its the same with our metabolisms, if we just feed it a little, it wont really wake up, but if we feed it lots (not just 1200, I mean 1500 - 1600, scary I know!) then it should wake up 'roaring' so to speak. Sorry this wasnt much help, but just remember, your not alone! |

Hey, Im sorry I dont have any advice, but I just wanted to say that Im pretty much the same. Im gaining on 1200-1300, and Im sooo scared to up my calories. Ive gone from eating 400 a day up to 1200-1300 a day, and I know I should go higher, but its hard, since Im seeing the scale up as it is. So I guess we should both up our cals together =) Keep going hun, youve come so far. |

Hey! Congrats on getting all your cals in!! As far as I know (and Im no expert, so I may be wrong), weight loss is a sign of your metabolism speeding up, so you need to keep upping your cals until you find your maintance level, or if you need to gain, youll need more. If your worried, Id suggest talking to your GP, they can help you out more than I can. Good luck with recovery!! You can go it! |

| Health & Support | BUMPING CALS- right away? | Jan 31 2008 08:05 (UTC) |

| I bumbed pretty quickly from 400 a day to 1200 a day, but I went to 600 for a few days, then 800, then 100, now 1200, and Im working on upping from there. I would say depending on how badly you restricted, you'd retatin a lot of water and bloat a lot by jumping, but that will even out, and its best for you to get to 1200 ASAP. Good luck!! | |||

| Health & Support | Bloated! | Jan 27 2008 22:22 (UTC) |

| The only things I can suggest is a nice gentle walk when your feeling bloated. Im vloated all the time now that Ive entered recovery, and my 20 min walks are the only things that save me. Im sure there are plenty of other options though, if your not allowed exercise. A nice hot bath always makes me feel better. | |||

| Im in my final year of highschool now (yikes!) and I have so many different things I want to do! Id love to be a vet, but I dont have the math skills, so a vet nurse would be great. Id also love to get into dietition/sports medicine. Another option would be child care / primary school teaching. But the one thing Ive always wanted to do, no matter what, is write. Im 17 and have already written 3 novels, so Id love to get them published and work as a full time writer! | |||
| Health & Support | Why am I loosing weight? | Jan 26 2008 02:24 (UTC) |

| Its probably because your metabolism is waking up, its happy to be getting those extra 200 calories, so its burning more. I wouldnt have thought this possible though, eating only 500cals a day. As long as your being watched by your counciler / doctor, you should be ok. | |||
