The rising body count of children alone makes this a no win situation no matter how you look at it. Children are not collateral damage, no matter how many times you want to use the term to dehumanize the victims.

Health & Support Topamax? Wellbutrin? Jan 12 2009

I can't help you with the Wellbutrin, but I'm taking Topamax now although a relatively small dose. I do have the tingling in the extremities, and I had the fuzzy head and trouble concentrating for a while, but luckily that subsided after a few weeks or I would have had a real problem at work. I still have the tingling in the fingers and toes, but my thinking doesn't seem so sketchy now. Also I did notice a loss of appetite and rapid weight decline when I first began taking it, so I'm not really restriciting my calories now because I don't want to lose weight too rapidly, and it seems to be the only way to balance it out. That and simply making sure I eat, even when I don't feel hungry.

Weight Loss Soda...weight loss hindrance? Oct 03 2008

Like shortcut2k said, it probably depends on the person. I have found that for me soda is first and almost exclusive on the DO NOT CONSUME list. It always seems to make me crave more sweets in the form of more soda and other junk food. Once I cut soda out of my diet I drink plenty of water and eat more fruits and veggies than artificial sweets, but once I add soda back in it all goes down hill again.

I am at my wits end, and have started forwarding their calls to voicemail. I am ecstatic about being this close to being debt free and feel a huge weight lifting off my shoulders, but at the same time, it's like they're trying to drive me into the ground with stress over money that they will have in a few weeks. I can't make time move any faster, if I could, just this once, I would.

But what do you do when they won't listen? I freelance and sometimes have more than a few weeks between projects, which I usually get paid at the end of. So recently I've been pulling in a lot of work and I know when I'm getting paid so when they called I told them I will pay in full in X weeks. They gave me the schpiel about late fees, and I told them I know, I've already factored those in, but I can't pay before then. I'm REALLY in a tight spot right now. If I pay before then, I can't get to work and if I can't get to work, I can't pay you. I had to repeat this to the same company 4 days in a row because they kept calling like we'd never had that conversation, even though every time we spoke they supposedly put it in their computer.

I hit 165 on the scale. I know, not that heavy, but it was the heaviest I'd ever been, and I know all of the women in my family were once slim and trim and now not only have trouble losing weight, but have health problems that would greatly benefit from the weight loss. I knew I had to stop before I hit 200 lbs, and educate myself on how to take better care of myself because I want to be the exception in my family and not have to take pills for my blood pressure or cholesterol when I'm older.

Ah the early stages. That 4 lbs in 3 weeks is a big first step. Don't underestimate the work you are doing. It may start off slow, but as long as it's steady and consistent it's a sign that you're doing good. Just imagine a few weeks from now when that number has doubled or even tripled!!!

The Lounge Offensive commercial? Am I being too sensitive? Mar 20 2008

Hey if he wants to dance around like a bushman fine but don't mock me. I'm extremely proud of my heritage and i see nothing wrong with having a sports team named after Native Americans (although Redskins is still a little offensive considering it was used as an insult) but I just can't stand the double standard.

Maybe I should make a commercial of my own and call myself Kunta Kinte.

Being a mix of African, Native American, and a healthy dose of Irish I sometimes fail to see what's funny or what the significance usually is of people's attempts to mimick any ethnic group in a commercial, but I've learned to ignore it. Stereotypical perceptions are not going away unfortunately, and it's rather hypocritical to complain about something that some people do and then stoop to the same level and insult people who might feel the same way you do about it.

yeah, I have to agree with the others here, your legs look great, not too muscular at all. They are just the right amount of toned and still feminine if you ask me. Like someone else said, if you really want to see huge muscular legs, go watch a gymnastics meet, or a track meet. Nicole's legs do look a little bit skinny but they look healthy and toned. It is possible to be skinny and look healthy, you just have to learn the difference between unhealthy skinny and healthy skinny and be able to see where your body falls between the two (without body distortion issues obviously), which I know is easier said than done. But you look perfectly healthy and great.

Then don't ask people for their opinion.

What are you getting out of continuing this thread?  I think your personal argument with your boyfriend has been pretty thoroughly hashed out.  Some people agree with you, others agree with your boyfriend, and others (possibly even the majority) have said or implied that you both acted badly.  It seems as though you've gotten what you wanted from this thread, which was a dissection of the argument, but for some reason, you just won't leave it alone.

So, what are you looking for?  Do you need to get the last word in?  Why are you prolonging this dreadful thread?

I know, enough already.

Foods Yet another frightening recipie from, guess who? (PAULA DEEN!) Mar 03 2008

I admit Paula can be heavy handed on the butter, but I've seen other food network hosts (read=Ina Garten) use 8 sticks of butter in one dessert, all to make little square pecan bars. They did look good but I wouldn't touch that recipe with a 10 foot pole as is. The same goes for Paula's food. Some of her recipes look great, some look a wreck, but with some modification I'd try the ones that look good to me.

I am so not a huge fan of the flavor of butter or margarine that it really doesn't matter which I eat, because I eat so little that it takes me forever to go through a single stick. Except for sweets, which I've cut down on, I don't think I eat nearly as much butter or margarine as most normal people.

If we all thought with our brains and never let our emotions get in the way there would never be any misunderstandings but nobody's perfect. I have on more than one occasion let my anxiety about certain situations override my common sense and even facts that I was already aware (i.e the fact that you aren't meeting at the airport), making absolutely no sense in the process and taking it out on others. It happens.

I like to travel, but that doesn't mean I don't have anxiety about traveling sometimes, especially when I've been with my boyfriend and have had a little kid point at us in a store and yell "Ill mommy look at that white man with that black lady" Not exactly welcoming, especially in your own country, so I can only imagine how much worse his anxiety might be. He's not being paranoid, he's projecting his anxieties and fears, and in the process he came up with the totally fictional situation of you meeting him in the airport and all hell breaking loose. He should apologize for over reacting the way he did, but with some situations it's more important to clear up any misunderstandings and hurt feelings on both sides than it is to point fingers and say who's wrong or right.

I agree that being super skinny doesnt change who you are- but it can change how you feel about yourself.

Since you had an eating disorder you should know that this is where the danger lies. People who die from eating disorders keep waiting to reach that magical point where they are "skinny enough" and happy with the way they look, the problem with that of course is that it's never enough.

Health & Support Rash on face food allergy? Feb 18 2008

You can develop food allergies at any age, so if you think it might be something you're eating see your doctor ASAP. A friend of mine developed peanut allergies when she was in her 20's and didn't find out what was causing her rashes until months later when she ate some peanuts and went into shock. Luckily she got to the hospital in time, but better safe than sorry.

Don't worry I don't think you're proportioned all wrong. If I'm correct you're probably just a little thicker in the hips, thighs, legs than most girls. I'm 5'6.5 currently about 142-3ish, and fitting back into my old size 9's, but I'm a curvy girl. I've slimmed down considerably from 165, but my legs have always been the thickest part of me, even though my weight distributes pretty evenly. At my largest I was a size 12.

Weight Loss Why do people insist on calling them "Cheat" days? Feb 18 2008

I agree, when my friends and others have asked me if I'm on a diet I say I'm not, I'm just trying to eat healthier or I AM eating healthier, and I always make a point of correcting them when they tell others I am on a diet. The term 'diet' as most people interpret it is a temporary dietary change to reach a goal. While restricting my calories is temporary, eating healthy is not, and I will continue that even after I reach my goal.
The Lounge Seasonale~ Ladies only, please Feb 04 2008

Can't help you there. I'm on seasonale, but don't really have any side effects except for the tiny bumps that seem to never go away on my forehead, but I don't think they're all that noticeable. My skin stays clear for the most part. I'd say gove it a few weeks, if it gets worse or your body doesn't seem to adjust then ask your doctor. I always give my body at least one cycle to adjust to new pills, but you might not want to wait the entire 3 months.
Fitness My Parents WON'T Let Me Go To The GYM!!!! Feb 04 2008

Like everybody has pointed out, you are 20 years old. This doesn't mean you shouldn't still respect your parents wishes, but it does mean there is more wiggle room for you to make your own decisions. At some point they have to respect that you are an adult and trust you to make the right choices, that is what raising your kids is all about, teaching them to make the right choices on their own. Besides I feel like your dad's objections about the gym are weak. Men will look at you "that way" no matter what you are doing or wearing, whether you're half naked in the gym, wearing sweats and a sweater in the gym, or bundled up in snow gear outside. It doesn't matter if they look, as long as they don't touch.
Weight Loss Does everyone here count calories daily?? Feb 04 2008

I'm counting regularly until I reach my goal. When I do reach my goal I won't be restricting my calories anymore so I'll have some room for extra calories. The thing is, while restricting my calories I've learned to make healthier eating choices and I realized when I started paying attention to what I was eating and how much that I had been eating way too much. I wasn't listening to my body when I was full and I was consuming lots of empty calories. Now that I know how to eat much healthier, I don't think staying withing my calorie range once I reach my goal will be a problem for me, so I won't be counting as much, but I will be paying more attention to my weight to make sure it doesn't fluctuate out of a certain range.

I am 31 and have hypertension. I have a family history of diabetes. I weigh 216lbs, and have a BMI of 35. It is serious for me. I want to be here for my kids, I can not have any more children because of my blood pressure. My weight has seriously impacted my life. I do not like the way I look, or feel. So... I am a little obsessed. I will just have to work harder at it.

Thank you for the support.

It sounds as if you are really worried about your health problems, which is a good thing. As someone pointed out before wanting to lose weight and/or get healthier can often be translated by others as a vanity move, and your efforts to become the 'new you' can often be misinterpreted by the people around you as you trying to be better than them. Explain to your husband what you just explained here, how worried you are about your health and how serious of an issue it has become for you. For some people it takes a really serious scare like a heart attack or stroke for them to make those important changes, and it's great that you are making these changes before any of these things happen to you.

Weight Loss at least 1200/day is BULL!!!!..for most people Jan 29 2008

Original Post by lizshuler:

I followed CC's advice in sept 06 to eat 1200 a day and safely lose.  What bull! I started at 129lbs and in 4 months had gained 15lbs. I was excercising and eathing healthy, just not enough. Once I figured out what was going wrong I bumped up my cals.  In another 3months I was back down to 134 by eating more!  I wasn't able to work out during this period either because I was too busy.  That's 10lbs in 3 months by eating more and not working out!!!!

Still keep in mind that everybody's body is different. I've been eating 1200 calories for about 4 months now, before I even found CC, and I'm steadily losing weight. Occasionally it slows down for a week or two or I increase my calories for a week with junk food but I haven't gained any of the weight back at all. I've gone from 165 to 144 weighing in every few weeks and my average wight loss is always around a pound a week.

The Lounge Average bra size? Jan 14 2008
16:33 (UTC)
141

I'm not sure I believe this can be attributed to obesity alone, as much as breast augmentations. I wear a 34DD and it hasn't really changed since gaining the weight. Most of my friends that are at a healthy weight are smaller than me, and everyone I know who is obese fits into one of two categories. 1) large breasts run in their family, so they would have large breasts regardless or 2) they may be heavier than me but their breasts are still pretty small. They can wear those band bras, and their breasts really aren't that large. Besides if obesity was that much of an influence I would expect the band size to be larger. 34 seems a pretty small average for an obese nation.

Weight Loss How often do you weigh yourself Jan 11 2008
18:01 (UTC)

I didn't weigh myself every day because I didn't have a scale before, and now that I do have one I plan on weighing every two weeks or so like I was doing at my doctor's office. Your weight naturally fluctuates day to day and that would drive me crazy, so I didn't get a scale and only weighed myself every few weeks. I've been seeing a steady decrease that way so I don't drive myself crazy over every single pound and get especially excited when I lose more than I thought I did. Plus I find that the longer I don't know what my weight is, the better I take care of myself to make sure I'm not gaining any weight.
The Lounge Why is obesity associated with junk food when a calorie is a calorie Jan 06 2008

Here's an article to look at. Studies have shown that instances of obesity are highest among the poorest groups of people for reasons ranging from health related problems, to not being informed and simply not being able to afford the healthier choices and having easier access to cheaper unhealthy foods.
