If you are already quite fit and just want to speed up and/or last longer, try HIIT.

If you aren't fit or are just starting out, then what wesmckean said :)

Health & Support Does fat retain more water than muscle? Jan 11 2009

The answer is no - fat is hydrophbic, muscle is hydrophillic. This means that fat repels water, which would mean it doesn't retain it as well as muscle.

This is going to sound insane but...take 2 surgical gloves, put a generous amount of any moisturiser in and sleep with them on. You'll wake up with baby-soft hands - my hands look like they belong to a 15 year old (shame about the rest of me! haha)

Do what I did and get a 12-month contract for £50 a month - then for every day you don't go think about all the money you're wasting. Trust me, you will go from then on!

On a serious note though, just go after work. Straight away! Don't go home to change or you'll never end up leaving - take your gym bag with you. You will feel tired but once you get on that treadmill it will wake you right up. Then at the end of your work out, have a nice refreshing shower and go home to a nice dinner. You will feel so much more refreshed and what's more it will enable you to have a nice relaxed sleep (you will want to sleep at about 10-11ish).

Weight Loss 3 pounds makes the HUGEST difference Apr 04 2008

jrise:    I totally know what you mean. I'm 5'7 and 125lbs, and every TOTM i gain about 3 lbs. I instantly feel fatter, and I swear my clothes don't fit rightly. As a result I feel demotivated and ugly. Ugh. But it's just a matter of letting it go and realising that theyre just temporary.

chelseagirl:     I had the same goals as you and have *just* hit them. You can check out my pics if you want, although they arent the best!

At first I felt the same an could literally taste the aspartame every time I had Sweet n' Low or Sugar-Free anything. So in addition to avoiding the real deserts, I found I'd begun cutting down on the SF stuff too. Now whenever I have a SF jelly or sweet n Low in my tea (maybe once or twice a week, max) I find it's been so long since tasting real sugar (about 4-5 months?) that I've forgotten what it tastes like :) In sum, I can't remember what the real deal tastes like!

Yay!!! WTG  shewolffe! I had a similar experience this morning - after finding out I'd gained (?) about 3 lbs I got all upset and then decided to get dressed for the day. I got out some jeans that used to be waay too tight on me, thinking "here we go again.." and pulled them up. I didn't even need to undo the belt or buttons, they just slid up without me undoing them! I was estatic (but bummed because now I need some new jeans! hehe. Did you get that feeling too?). It feels great because it just goes to show, all your hard work is finally showing in a big way! Smile

Once again, way to go!! Just goes to show, never give up!

Weight Loss Carb cravings and binging - a never ending cycle? Feb 29 2008

Original Post by bjben:

Hi,

I've definitely experienced what you're talking about - and on occasion still do, just not to the same extreme. For me the key has been to allow those things on a regular basis in "normal" amounts. The more forbidden foods I have, the likelier it is I will binge. This is borne out in the binging research as well. Everyday I allow myself some REAL chocolate. Somedays it's one Ghiradelli Mint Bliss dark choc. (Heaven in a wrapper for 55 calories.) I really work on savoring it and enjoying it. When it's done and I want more, I get out of the kitchen (just being in the kitchen is a trigger for me.) I also tell myself that this urge to binge WILL pass, I'm not powerless, I can do something else until it passes.

I also allow myself some bread everyday because I so love it. I'm still a work in progress, but I know my binging and cravings have gotten better since I've given myself permission to have those things I crave on a regular basis and am not depriving myself so severely. Also, I've found that in the choc./carb category, I do the same thing you do - if I buy a low-carb, low-fat, low-whatever version, I just eat more of it. I now buy the "real" thing and enjoy it thoroughly. I hope this helps!! I know how frustrating it can be!!

See, I can't even allow myself a little. Because EVERY time I do this happens. Everytime without fail. If I allowed myself a bit of chocolate every day I would easily eat maybe 5 bars a day!

From the Granola one (150 cals, one serving):

  • 3/4 cup honey

  • Um...how is this 150 cals? 1/2 stick butter and 3/4 cup honey has got to be at least 500 cals?!

I used to get a Caramel Macchiato with all the trimmings, or an Eggnog latte (LOVE them). Now I get a black tea/coffee - no milk, no sugar. Or if I'm feeling daring, a skimmed milk hot chocolate (no cream). It's usually the black tea though. I don't even WANT to know how many calories were in the grande Eggnog lattes Embarassed

This is so me. I'm 5'7 and about 129 lbs (9st 2), which is perfect - apparently. But I still count calories and I really hate if I have to go over 1,700 (I workout a lot too). It's alright though, because I make sure I get about 1700-2000 now, but at first it was difficult. I couldn't bear the thought of eating anything but vegetables and lean meat ("clean" foods), couldn't bear the thought of not working out and couldn't bear the thought of not counting calories. I still count them now, but it's usually only mentally and not on the site. In the back of my mind I'm still aiming to be 110-115lbs, but everytime I start to diet/work out compulsively, I tell myself that I am perfect the way I am :)

Hi all! Late reply here. I live in Wales (was living in Cardiff with partner, now live in the valleys) but am off to London to live and work by June/July. Am currently 5ft 7.5 and 9st 2, and hope to maintain and tone up by then (maybe lose the odd 2lb too, but we'll see). Nice to see so many UK faces here :)

As a snack, beef jerky is HIGH in protein and low in fat - the bag I had today was 44% Protein (25g protein to a 57g bag) and only about 2% fat (no saturates!). But obviously don't try and live off it.

Motivation How to Avoid the Weekend Splurge... Dec 29 2007
    13:20 (UTC)
    1

Don't think of it as the weekend. Do what you would do on any other day (except work obviously!). So start out with your usual breakfast and lunch, hit the gym, walk the dog, read a book, have a sensible dinner, go to bed. If you think of it as a Tuesday (for example) minus the work rather than a day to let lose, you won't go nuts. As for your day to let lose, I suggest chosing a different one each week and stick to it! If it's earlier in the week (Tuesday-Thursday), do your thing and if you exceed your target don't stress - then throughout the week just remind yourself that you've had your fun (so no more!) and there's only so many days to go until the next "weekend" (which must fall on a different day). By varying them aswell, you don't let your body get used to excepting that pizza and cake at the same time every week. I've been doing this for years now and I don't even exceed on my "weekends" anymore!

     Hope that made sense :o)
