This is the group for me! So happy to find you all! I have that ten to lose- 5'3 129 and a very petite frame. I have been active for years, but never reached my potential (In the process of being dx with Celiac, which sucks the life outta ya). I am ready to work towards that 118! DO I SMELL FUNNY? No one seems to reply to anything I ever post-- is there a strategy for meeting people on CC? |

| Foods | High Fructose Corn Syrup? | Feb 15 2008 11:08 (UTC) |

It's hard to publish research on something that has a lobbying group as powerful as corn does, behind it. So I think the science will be thin for the time being. From what I have read though, I think that it does mess with your metabolism, because fructose should go with fiber (ie fruit), and your system is looking for more food, leaving you hungry.
My mom gave it up and lost 20 pounds. |

| Wonderful! You are amazing.
Just an aside. Lots of food can make you sleepy-- but- if there are any auto immune disorders in your family, you should talk to your doc about things like Celiac and Hypothyroidism. Depression can be a sympton of both (not that you sound depressed- just fabulously in charge of your life) Best of luck on your continued journey. |

Eat portions like the Italians around you are, keep an eye on you waistband on you pants, and don't sweat it. When I was in Italy, there was no danger of packing on pounds. I was in Rome, so it was a hike to get to a bus stop or the subway, and anywhere beyond. Watch out for those crazy drivers-- and enjoy all of the eye candy.... |

Talk to your doc- I am very hypothyroid, and I tried a couple of meds, but have only had luck with Synthyroid (I am not the only one who has had this problem.) Whichever one works for you, DO NOT let the pharmacy sub a generic. They tell you it's all the same, but that is not the case with Thyroid meds. Also remember, calcium, soy and millet can interfere with the meds functions, so don't over do those within four hours of your Thyroid med. I have spent many many hours researching hypothyroidism-- and it seems that 10 pounds is "Thyroid weight". Anything other than that you will have to loose the old fashioned way-- but when you start feeling better, that is easier. Hypothyroidism has been a journey for me-- imagine being a runner who gradually gets to the point where you can barely get off the couch. I done very well on a "zone" type diet-- eventually that type of diet led me to discover that I am probably Celiac as well (changing insurance right now-- won't be able to be tested for a few more weeks). Be aware that if your hypo is auto-immune, you may have other underlying conditions as- they tend to cluster together. Probably waaaay more info than you want. Good Luck |

| Try adding a little protien to your day, and fewer refined carbs- it might help if you are having a sugar crash that's triggering your cravings. (Check out info on the "Zone Diet"- it seems to eliminate some of that.) | |||

Wow- you have a challenge, but not one you can't handle. Do you have a choice where you stay? Residence Inns have a good breakfast with things like oatmeal, eggs, and lots of fresh fruit. For dinner, you need to be a little more creative, but if it's restaurants, plan ahead the night before, but a salad with a chicken breast on top, dressing on the side is always a safe bet. Fresh fruit packs and travels well. Otherwise, there are all kinds of "just add water" whole grain breakfast options: A reasonable portion of whole grain cereal makes a good dinner, too. Just a guess, but are you having wine with dinner? If you cut that out, a 5 am meeting with the treadmill might be easier.
GOOD LUCK! |

I have a comment for loriklorik- I am a chef who teaches and works revising hospital and nursing homes menus- I spend a lot of time with Register Dietitians- by far and away they are happy with any diet that gets people eating reasonable portions of healthy food. Don't be such a grouch. |

I am having exactly the same problem- 32, small frame 5'2-5'3; 130-ish, with all of my weight in my butt- impossible to buy jeans- I have been trying to loose at 1400 with exercise, but I can see that I will have to drop to 1200. Hope you don't have a mother-in-law who sends baked goods home all the time, too. Thanks for the question.

| You have to look at the actual gym, but my vote is for the gym membership- especially if you have a YMCA handy- it gives you a chance to try out a lot of different things. | |||

| Cottage cheese is surprisingly high in protein. Sometimes I just eat leftover chicken or a piece of lowfat cheese and some fruit. I do better w/o grain at breakfast. | |||

Eat food that remembers it's mother. If it has more than 3-4 ingredients, you should rethink ingesting it. |

This might help- or not- but of my husband, myself, and both of our ex's, we are all four happier and healthier than we were previous to divorce. The last of us (my husbands ex) is remarring in two weeks. (We both divorced 6-8 years ago) He had three kids who have just done great- and we've added one of our own, as did my ex-husband and his new wife. There is a future-- keep your head up. Good luck however it turns out. |

Your fine. Depending on how strict your calories are, you may want to up your protein a little if you are feeling tired or hungry all the time. If you are eating fruit and veggie choices for your carbs, you feel fuller and the numbers stay in line. You didn't mention if you are a vegetarian, because that's about where a lot of vegetarians should be. |

good luck to you- I hope everything works out. |
