Welcome ezziriah!

Just a tidbit - 8+ glasses of water a day isn't necessarily for everyone!  I read an article about this and asked my doctor, and she pretty much said as long as you are peeing 3-4 times a day, and your urine is a paler yellow instead of a dark, bright yellow color each time, then you're probably fine and your body isn't dehydrated.  (note - it will almost always be darker when you pee first thing in the morning)  Drinking 8 glasses a day for some people could flood their body and cause a rise in water weight, because our bodies typically get about 20% of our daily water from food.

Okay so I'm a bit miffed but happy.  The scale has been yo-yo-ing all over the place the last 3 weeks, but even though I admit I've been cheating more frequently than I should, I've been sticking to my workouts so at least I am helping myself in that respect.  Yesterday I went to the mall and bought a dress in a size 18 - so excited!  I'm not in size 18 pants yet, but it's definitely a start and I am so excited to wear the dress when I go on vacation in 2 weeks.

One thing I have noticed is that my energy levels have skyrocketed!  I only got 6.5 hours of sleep last night...  historically that would leave me completely debilitated, but I am awake and chipper, if just a tad bit sleepy-eyed.

And the most important thing of all - I am feeling *SO* much better about myself!  I bought a sexy piece of lingerie for the first time ever, and wore it confidently to the "ooohs" and "aahs" of my boyfriend.  (lol sorry for the TMI!).   I've worn skirts twice - something I hadn't done in 3 years.  And overall I just find more and more that I look in the mirror and am not depressed by what I see!

*sigh* I feel so ashamed and discouraged but I am forcing myself to come in here because I promised myself I was serious about my weight loss this time around.  I did report at all last week because I had gained back some of my weight and was too ashamed to come in and see it in writing.

I'm not sure what's going on really... like I've had a couple cheats, but nothing that was diet-shattering or over-the-top terrible.  My boyfriend keeps telling me that maybe it's just muscle increase because I've been working out pretty hard, but I doubt it cuz my weight has been yo-yo-ing.  I was 237.4 just yesterday, and I know I didn't eat enough to gain a lb in one day.

I just feel really discouraged.  I am fighting 2 impulses - to either starve myself to lose the weight again, or give up and gorge myself.  I know neither one is healthy and neither one will get me where I want to be.  It's just so depressing because I was so close to 10 lbs... and so excited about it... and then to start gaining back... It's so disappointing.

The Lounge Relationship advice - older men Feb 25 2008
16:59 (UTC)

Just a heads up - it can work.  But know there will very likely be many more problems than you would encounter with a man closer to your age.

I am 20.  My boyfriend is 25.  We've been together for almost a year and a half, and while we love each other, I will acknowledge that I fight with him more than I ever have with other boyfriends, lol.  When we fight, a lot of the time he calls me immature or a little spoiled girl... which drives me nuts because I think I'm pretty normal for a girl my age.  He just expects me to be at his level of independence... for example, he loses his patience a lot with my need to talk to my parents about things and get their approval.  He also doesn't understand why I am so close to my family still.  He doesn't get why I still go home on the train to see my doctor and dentist, and is mad that I am not ready to move off my campus yet.  But in the same respect, he also helps my mom cook on those weekends I go home and plays video games with my brother and helps me remember those doctor appointments... so I guess you have to weigh for yourself if the fights are balanced with the care and kindness he treats you with.

My dad's second wife was 16 years younger than him, and only 12 years older than me... lol man did my classmates give me **** for that some days, and you can bet it bugged my mom like crazy...   They truly loved each other, but in the end, they ended up not working out.  They were together for almost 8 years, but it wasn't enough.  My dad wanted a housewife to clean and cook and take care of his kids... She was young and just starting a career and not prepared to take care of children who were not her own.  It just couldn't work.

Give it a shot, maybe it won't matter for you guys.  Talk out the serious stuff like money, children, etc, and see if you're on the same page.

I'm not sure how red and aching means you're allergic... that s*#$ HURTS lol... of course your skin would get a little irritated.

I get my eyebrows waxed, and I don't have any problems.  I mean, it gets a little red afterwards and is a little sore for the first 15-20 min, but it's not an allergy.  You're ripping hairs out, lol, it's not gonna feel PLEASANT.

And I bleach my upper lip, because I don't want to have to go to a salon every week or two because it is getting fuzzy.  I use Nair.

I met my boyfriend through myspace classifieds.

It was my freshman year of college and after my first month, I was feeling lonely and wanted some companionship.  I had just broken up with my ex earlier that year and was feeling like it was time to move on and start a new relationship.  It probably didn't help that I am not incredibly outgoing and hadn't made a ton of friends yet at school.

Anyways, I posted a classified saying I was new to the Philadelphia area and just wanted a friend to hang out with, go to a concert or two with, and maybe have them show me around the city a bit since I didn't know the area too well.  I got a lot of replies... (some that were SUPER creepy... think guys my dad's age or sexual adventures)... and I added a few screen names to my buddy list and started to talk to 2-3 of the guys to see if any struck a connection.

And one of them did.  He was a senior at a nearby college, and had grown up in the suburbs.  He was into music, he was intelligent (I need a guy who I feel is just as smart if not smarter than me), and made me laugh.  I'm not usually one to trust meeting people from the Internet... but something just seemed right.  We talked on the phone a few times and then agreed to get dinner at a restaurant on campus that week.

I was so nervous that night but I needn't have been.  It went great.  We both decided we weren't too hungry and just took a long walk, giving each other tours of our respective campuses.  We finally built up an appetite and grabbed some chinese (it was delicious), and then settled on a bench outside and talked.  Everything I learned about him made me like him more and more.  He says he felt the same way.  And now, 1 year and 4 months later... we are still going strong and considering moving in together in the fall.

I always thought peanut butter was terrible for you, lol...

I agree with the post that recommended soup.  It's really the cheapest way to get a LOT of healthy, FILLING food.  I can get enough soup for  a week if I use a whole chicken... I use a little bit of orzo as well though, cuz I think having a rice or carb makes the whole thing much more filling.

And check all your local grocery stores flyers every week for the best sales... Do you have a bulk-store, like Costco or BJs or Sam's Club?  They can be great for buying large packs of stuff cheap.  My boyfriend and I buy meat there some times and freeze it... frozen burgers are a good option, too, and usually you can get a lot, cheap.

Well, the marvelous thing about counting calories is that there's pretty much nothing you *can't* eat, it's just about portion control and staying under your daily calories :-)   And on days you do a good work-out, you can allow yourself a couple hundred extras, too.

Haha my boyfriend teases me cuz I'm a nutrition label natzi now... I read the labels on EVERYTHING before I eat it.  I try to avoid things that are super high in fat or sodium (sodium makes you retain water), and try to get at least 5-7 grams of fiber a day (apples and pears are awesome for fiber - just make sure you eat the skin!).

I think you're crazy about the towel thing (lol I say that in the nice way!).  Even weighing like 70 lbs more than you, I don't care about stuff like that quite so much.. well, I mean, I care... but I don't let it affect my ability to enjoy myself.  My family vacations in the Outer Banks, NC, and I love it there because the beaches are really secluded and the few people that ARE there are mostly families, instead of hot little skinny girls in bikinis everywhere (*grrr* haha).

I dunno, I used to care a lot about how I looked... and I guess I still do at times, but I just don't feel like letting my weight get in the way of stuff I enjoy, like swimming and volleyball and sunbathing.  Plus I am losing weight every week and I am already feeling so much better, so I want to show my progress off :-)

Man.  Well for starters, I would love to be your weight right now, lol... I'm the same age and height as you, but I weigh 236... and I still wear bathing suits at the beach!  (Granted, it's with a t-shirt over 99% of the time, but hey, it's something, lol).

But sure, you can do it.  30 lbs in 4 months?  Sounds about right, although it leaves very little room for *cheating*.  Take it a day at a time, don't stress yourself about absolutely-no-leeway having to be that weight.  Cuz even if you only lose 10-20 lbs, it's still a big step towards your goal, right?

Eat lots of fiber, drink enough water, keep your balance of fruits and veggies as well as proteins and carbs.  Try to stay under 40 g of fat a day (Alli diet plan says 46, but I think that's high!).  Eat 5-6 small meals a day.  Personally, I think lean cuisines are great cuz everything is pre-portioned and pre-made, lol.

Here's my one little quick-recipe that is pretty tasty...  use a small (7-9 inch diameter) whole wheat pita, 1/2 cup of a low-cal, low-sodium sauce (Hunt's makes a really tasty spicy pizza sauce), and sprinkle some shredded cheese on top (I use a combo of a low-fat mozzarella and a fat-free mozzarella).  Top with any veggies you like on pizza and mmmm you have a healthy, portion-controlled pizza!

Do you mind if I ask what your daily diet looks like?

I do not have PCOS, but my doctor put me on metformin this year.  I have hypothyroidism and my insulin levels were going into a danger zone, so I was put on metformin to hopefully help prevent diabetes.

At first I absolutely thought I hated it.  I would refuse to take it some days because I was sick of having to s**t everywhere, lol (sorry for the TMI!).  There were times I was even late for work because I would miss my train because of a dire bathroom need that would come out of NOWHERE.

But I've learned now how to control it... it works like Alli, really.  You have to moderate the fat, grease, and sugar you put in your body.  The only times I ever have problems with that nasty metformin side effect is when I allow myself a *cheat* day and eat something that really isn't part of my diet (so I restrict those foods for the weekend).

Recipes Spaghetti Squash! Feb 22 2008

Well first - when buying the spaghetti squash, its in the produce section with any of the other squash... mine was squished between eggplant and acorn squash lol.  You're supposed to buy ones with a paler yellow color too, brighter ones aren't as good or aren't ready yet or something (I forget the reasoning - I just remember my mom teaching me about it!)

I cook it by slicing it in half, cleaning out the seeds, and putting each half face down in a dish with a little bit of water and microwaving it 5 minutes at first and then in 2 min intervals, testing its consistency.  If you're eating it plain, I recommend sticking some butter in while it's hot and letting it melt.  I myself like it one of two ways...  buttered and mixed in with veggies and a little cheese, or with a meat sauce.  My boyfriend and I brown some ground turkey and then mix it in with a sauce (ones that are a little sweet with some basil work best IMO!).  That's my favorite way to eat it, but I know that not everyone likes the taste of squash in a marinara sauce.

Just Google "spaghetti squash recipes" and see what you can find.  There's a ton of different ones out there!

Hmm.  Well by my estimate, I'd say you're probably supposed to eat closer to 1500-1600 calories a day, since 1800 is working for me and I'm significantly heavier... But really, I would just take one of the sites (I recommend this one!), use the recommended calorie intake, and stick to it for 2 weeks.  See how your weight loss goes, and if you're losing, yay!   And if you're not losing - lower your calorie count.  Just play with it to see how it goes.

Just a few links I found.  My recommendation is to do your homework if you are planning to approach your endocrinologist, because there is a chance you will have to fight for your right to obtain an Armour prescription.  A lot of people have to go through family doctors or switch physicians.

http://thyroid.about.com/cs/thyroiddrugs/l/bl letter.htm  A woman's letter to her physician concerning synthroid and armour.  Apparently the physician refused to treat her if she took armour instead of synthroid.

http://thyroid.about.com/library/weekly/aa032 901a.htm   Some interesting facts about levothyroxine, including the fact that synthroid was never really approved by the FDA, but rather grandfathered in.

http://thyroid.about.com/od/isthatso/f/armour .htm  An interesting article that gives a bit about the history of armour and synthroid, and shows a price comparison of the two.

My $.02  :

I take synthroid, and have been on it for, oh, 6 or 7 years now.  When I first started taking it, I noticed a HUGE difference in my energy levels and was a lot better emotionally.  But over time it has stopped having as much of an effect on me... it wears off by like 7 or 8 oclock at night (I take it in the morning), and I still get bouts of depression.  I hate the side effects (super dry skin that is sometimes extremely painful, even with twice a day moisturizing).  Just last year my doctor finally raised my dose from 50 to 75, and when my levels still climbed up a bit after 6 months, she pushed it to 88 and I am just waiting for my next blood test to see how that is doing.

So I started doing research.  I've been reading a lot and it seems a really common thing for people to gradually have to increase their dosing of synthroid until it no longer works for them.  Now I'm not sure that this is a downside of the synthroid, or if it is simply like any other drug consumed steadily over time - your body adjusts to it and  is not as easily impacted by the doses that it once was.

Now, my feelings on the Armour vs Synthroid discussion.  Every article I've read about Armour raves about it.  People who are on it swear it is the best thing ever.  And maybe it is.  But I trust my doctor, and I find it hard to believe that synthroid is as bad as some people say if many, many doctors prescribe it first and foremost.

I, personally, will stick with synthroid for now.  If, when I visit my doctor in a few months, my levels are still up and she wants to raise my dose again, I will ask her opinion of Armour.  I would be willing to try it, but for now, my current prescription is synthroid.

Weight Loss does it matter how spaced out your calories are? Feb 19 2008
15:31 (UTC)

Is it bad?  Nah.  You're supposed to eat a good, healthy breakfast.  But I don't know what your calorie intake is - if it's 1200, then I'd say you could probably go a little lighter, but if it's 2000, that's probably just right.

But for weight loss purposes, it is really best to eat multiple small meals and not concentrate your calories into any meal, whether it be breakfast, lunch, or dinner.  I'd recommend splitting your breakfast in half, and eating the other half an hour or two later.  In the morning, I start with a piece or two of fruit and a cup of tea, and in an hour I eat something like a granola bar or a whole-wheat english muffin for some fiber.  Basically I eat every couple hours, because it keeps your metabolism rate high and burning at its best all day long.

mtucker/Melinda -

I should send you this spreadsheet my friend gave me... it's listed a few fast food places, and at each one, it lists low-cal, low-fat food choices  (she's on Alli, so we both kinda take tips for each other on food).

MacDonalds:  grilled chicken sandwich (420 cal), grilled snack wrap with ranch (270), almost all the salads are 300 or less with chicken, except the southwest, fruit n yogurt parfait (160), apple dippers (35) w/ caramel (70), reduced fat vanilla cone (150)...  stay away from the McFlurries (560) and the Triple Thick shakes (420+).

Chick Fil-A: Chicken Sandwich (410), Chargrilled Chicken Sandwich (270), the wraps are 410-480, fruit cup (50), Icedream (240).

Those are just the first 2 places and a small selection of the foods.  But if you find yourself frequenting fast food joints - go to their website and list out the foods and their nutrition info.  Plan for yourself ahead and stick to things that are under 500 cals and 15 grams of fat (or whatever, those are just my numbers lol).

Trust me, I know what it's like to be on the run.  I'm a full-time employee and student as well and it gets hectic.  It just takes more planning ahead.  I lay out all my food/meals for the day the night before and put them all in a bag in the fridge.  If I'm going out for lunch, I cut back on my "snack" foods and mostly pack fruits and veggies.  You just gotta find what works for you!

Foods Pizza sliced in squares Feb 14 2008

Original Post by cellophane_star:

Measure the square pizza diagonally. Let's say it's 8 inches across. Estimate the total calories of a 8 inch circular pizza. Since a square has covers more surface area than a circle of the same length across, I would estimate the square pizza to have additional pizza equal to one additional slice.

So if an 8 inch circular pizza has  slices at 200 cals each, it would have 1600 cals for the entire pizza. Therefore, a square pizza at 8 inches diagonally would have 1600 cals + 1 200 cal slice = 1800 cals.

Take the 1800 and measure how much of the square pizza you ate. If you ate 1/3 of the square, you would have consumed 600 cals.

Just an estimate!

Okay lol here's where I come off as a TOTAL geek ....

Actually, the total are of an 8" circle has more area than the 8" diagonal square... the circle would be ~ 50.27 square inches and the square would be 32 square inches.

So the square is about 64% of the calories of the circle...   so if the circle pizza is 1600 cals, then the square is 1024 calories (IF they are the same size).

But most square pizzas (IE Sicilian pizzas, as I said earlier) have a larger area and their diagonal line is longer than a typical pizza's diameter.  I'm not sure if you are talking about this or a frozen/party/Ellios type though.

lol okay I totally agree with a lot of the reasons here...  sorry for the repeats, but here's my list:

1) NO CHUB RUB

2) No more grocery paranoia

3) Want to fit on all rides at theme parks

4) I want to go sky diving and there's a 200 lb limit at the local place

5) I wanna suggest having an ice cream party without feeling like everyone is looking at me like "sure, the fatty wants ice cream..."

6) My elaboration on the chub rub - I wanna be able to go to the beach, swim in the ocean, and not have to worry about the nasty rash you get from your legs rubbing with salt and sand in between

7) I wanna be able to try some new stuff in the bedroom with my bf

8) I wanna go dancing at a club and not feel self-conscious

9) I do not wanna feel like every fat joke is directed at me

10) I don't want to have to turn side ways to go through a turnstyle

I'm suprised no one recommended spaghetti squash!

First, let me post a good recipe for it:  http://recipes.howstuffworks.com/spaghetti-sq uash-primavera-recipe.htm

Tons of food!  The recipe makes 2 servings, and each serving is 116 cals.

It's really easy to make, you can even do it in a microwave... just cut the squash in half, microwave it till it's tender, and then use a fork to pull the inside out.  It shreds like spaghetti.  Mix in a little butter, salt, maybe pepper, and add parmesan cheese and veggies!  mmmm!

Weight Loss Question I've Been Pondering for Years Feb 13 2008
20:11 (UTC)

Hmm well I know that carbohydrates turn to fat more quickly than protein... Also, foods with fiber are supposed to make your body work harder to burn them, plus they help keep you regular (which helps prevent water retention).  I've also heard people say how stuff like apples or salad are "negative" calories because they make your body burn more calories to process them than they put in you...

That's all I've got, lol.
