| Pregnancy & Parenting | How to deal with morning sickness. | Feb 08 2008 20:08 (UTC) |

| Congrats on the pregnancy. I wish I had a decisive cure, but I don't. All I can say is that with all five if my pregnancies, I was sick for a good four months. Nothing worked and each one had it's own triggers for the sickness. It was so bad sometimes that I didn't think I would make it through it, however, I did, and I have five beautiful children. On another positive, I also had four miscarraiges, and only with one of them did I even have morning sickness, so I always looked at the sickness as a positive in knowing the baby was okay. I did eat anything I wanted. Sometimes it was something unhealthy, but if I got it down and kept it down I could often follow with something a little more nutrient dense. If I had a craving for bacon, I had it, and then tried to get down a banana or some grapes. A few times I really think my body was craving protien, so though I wouldn't think I could eat a steak, after I started, my body settled down and I actually could enjoy it. I learned to try and keep eating little amounts through the day and if I threw them up, I was hopeful that some of it was staying down. Lastly, I have a juicer, and I tried to juice nutritious carrot/veggie juices mixed with apple because they digest quickly. I watered them down so as not to shock my system and I drank them slowly. Adding a piece of ginger sometimes helped and sometimes didn't, but ginger is supposed to be good for calming the stomach. Good Luck | |||

I really like the Firm videos. I have been using them on and off for years. They are very controlled and effective for me. Lately I tried some Billy Blands and his band videos (Boot Camp). I sort of liked them at first because I really worked hard, but with a closer look, I realized that he gets to talking and forgets about the people working out around him LOL. He says we are going to do three sets of each exercise and then sometimes we end up doing five while his team is yelling and screaming. I know some of that is for effect, but for me, it was sheer pain. I then thought I would just do the three sets as recommmended and catch my breath with low impact while I wait for the next exercise. Sometimes I think I can only work my deltoids so many times though, but I am not an expert by any means. I got discouraged with it the other day because I really like a well planned work out video. I am thinking of trying some of his other videos and seeing if they are a little better organized. On the plus, the music is great. I can also say pretty confidently that the Carmen Electric videos were not worth my money and neither were the Belly Twin videos for belly dancing. I didn't break a sweat with either. I also do not like gyms. Part of that I think is that I have five children and getting out of the house can be troublesome. But also it's just the time factor. Working out of home eliminates the travel time and the need to have child care. Good luck and thanks for the post. |

| I felt this way this week too. Couple a difficult menstrual cycle with a high pressure schedule, I felt like I couldn't keep up my healthy ways. In fact, instead of one cheat day, I had three. But, thanks to this site, I am getting back on track today and lookin forward to it. It's hard to have a lifestyle change and not feel the pain now and then. But we try and get past it all, doing what you are doing in sharing your pain, adjusting our calories for that time of the month, etc. It's all good and we can all stick together and encourage each other. Good Luck. | |||

| Congratulations on your baby. I have five children and all through my pregnancies and afterwards I worked out. Sometimes, it didn't seem like I was working out, but I found ways to keep in shape. My favorite home work out routine is the Firm Videos. They have worked for me. I also posted exercises around the house, and when I went to that part of the house, I would do those exercises, i.e. near the tv, 25 crunches, in the kitchen on the cabinets, 25 round kicks....whatever I wanted to work on. When I would get up in the morning I would do 25 pushups. On really tired days after being up all night with a baby, I wouldn't do as much. I would take the baby for walks, crawl around on the floor with the baby, etc. Anything I could do to stay active. I never lost weight until at least the 4th month after I had the babies, but then it would come off pretty quickly. The trick is this, you have to find out what will work with you. I did all sorts of stuff. After the fifth child I was very determined so I joined a Karate class and got my black belt. I went almost every day and they didn't mind that I brought the baby. In fact, I signed all my kids up for it and my sons first word was a kia. He would do sit ups in his car seat, it was so hilarious. I think this site is great for keeping track of calories, but be aware that if you are nursing your calories will be different. Stay away from diet sweeteners and go natural as much as possible. Go for good fats and quality nutrient dense foods. Anyway, hope this isn't annoying. Good luck. | |||

| I like to drink too. To avoid the after effects, I drink a glass of water between each drink that I have. And, if I do get drunk, I drink a bunch of water before I go to sleep, put water by my bed at night, eat something sweet like a clementine and a piece of chocolate, take 800 mg of motrin and hope for the best. It usually works. Last night I drank too much and I did that and I had no trouble this morning. In the morning, if I do have a hangover my husband's cure is coke and bacon. LOL....it actually works, but it isn't good for a diet. | |||

| If it has any sort of artificial sweetener, I don't eat it. I think that stuff if pretty unhealthy, but if you like it and if it helps, go for it. | |||

First of all, Congratulations on your new baby. What a wonderful gift. I have had five babies, so I know how you feel. I can tell you how I managed to stay slim with each pregnancy. The biggest thing is this....You have to take care of yourself first, before taking care of anyone else. To do this you have to make some decisions about what you want and then get a plan on how to do it. I think having a baby is a fabulous, but you can easily lose yourself and that is not what should happen. If you are happy, fit, energetic, you set the example for your child and you will have a better quality of life. Take a shower every morning, put on your makeup if you wear it, read motivational material (whatever that is for you), get out of the house, remember that it is okay to put the baby down, to let the baby cry a few minutes while you take care of yourself, to ask for help when you need it, and to be a whole person. I am just a regular working mom, and not an expert in anyway, but if I can help you on this journey, I will. |
