Hey guys, Well, I've got you all "beat" at 5'1 and 246lbs :'( I'm so glad to have found this post! Granted I'm much bigger than many of you, it's nice to see some "shorties" weighing at least a little closer to what I am. It makes me not feel quite as bad as when I see 6' men weighing less than I do :( Have a wonderful evening! |

It's pretty difficult to offend me, don't worry. My workout routines are fine and are producing results. I'm not the least bit concerned about them. I rarely do the same thing day to day and do plenty of strength training to produce results. I'm DEFINITELY not training for a marathon.. I'm just pretty comfortable running, oddly enough. Thanks for the encouragement! |

I don't take that as rudely, but would like to say that, just because you're fat, doesn't automatically mean that you eat poorly (and the converse: just because you're thin, doesn't mean you eat healthily). Some people have medical conditions and various reasons as to why weight loss is extremely difficult for them. Some people gain weight eating 1600 calories. Some people lose. It's not a set amount for everyone. I've been on this diet plan, or something very close to it, since October 2007. I significantly increased my exercise routine come January 2008 (New Year's Resolution that I stuck to this year!!) When I was younger, I was extremely active and quite fit. When I was about 9, I had a bad knee injury (came from a nasty karate injury combined with Osgood-Schlatters disease) and was bedbound/not able to get up and move for almost a year. I packed on a TON of weight at that time. Then, as I hit puberty, I packed on quite a bit more. This left me somewhere around 200lbs at 14. After my knee was healed and was stable, I got back into active things, but was never quite as active as before. 7 yeas later, at 21, I'm now at 240. To add things into the stupid weight-gain mix, I was diagnosed with an under active thyroid at 19. My entire immediate family is quite large, with my dad/sister and brother all being larger than I am. Of course I don't know exactly, I suspect that I have a substantial amount of muscle hiding underneath all my fat. People often guess me to be easily 50-60lbs lighter than I really am, I've got killer endurance (I can comfortably run a 6.5-7 minute mile without being winded at all, and often do 45 minute runs averaging 6-7mph and still come out fine), am fiercely strong, in terms of weight lifting numbers, etc. Not to mention, despite all my girth, I comfortably wear a size 16 pant and a L shirt (in Gap/ AE sizes, anyway). You can't "pinch an inch" anywhere off of my legs except for that stupid inner thigh area.. my belly and upper arms are where you can pinch "a foot". I'll start throwing some nuts in in the evenings.. since nut allergies can be extremely severe, we've been asked to not have any nut products at camp - no peanut butter, etc. I'm not a fan of milk, but make sure I drink atleast a cup a day for calcium purposes, and make my smoothies with it as well. I'm not saying that I NEVER indulge myself in unhealthy things (ie the high calorie stuff I like.. chips, cookies, etc) but it is a rarity: every 2 weeks, I MIGHT have A cookie, or A small bag of chips. I'm determined to lose all of this excess weight. The olive oil with bread is a good idea. I'll have to go get a loaf of Italian bread for it - somehow, dipping slices of wonder bread in oil doesn't sound appetizing LOL |

During the semester, I try to follow a similar diet to this, but often end up making a poor choice at some point, be it one of those fancy iced coffee things, a pastry, etc.. but it's something about being outside in the sun all day that ruins my appetite entirely. I LOVE soybeans, unfortunatly they're extremely difficult to find around here (I live in suburbia NY). I've only found them in one place.. in a Co-op near my university (6 hours away), and a 2-serving tray of them was close to $10.. Ouch. There are LOTS of higher calorie things that I really enjoy, but the higher calorie content (at least in the things I like: cookies, chips, etc) brings along an unhealthy factor. I could drink milkshakes all day and be content, but all that sugar from syrup additives, etc, is probably not worth it. I REALLY like avocado and think I'm going to be adding even MORE of it to the things I eat.. Yogurt is also a really good idea.. I don't know why I wasn't really coming up with these common-sense things, I guess it's just because I never really ate yogurt or nuts or things like that.
Thanks for your suggestions, everyone!! |

Thanks for your suggestions, everyone! Every now and then I'll throw a little extra PB into the day, but really only if I need a a little extra protein.. somehow the smell of it tends to make me nauseated when it's in 'regular form' - i'll toss some more into my smoothie though.. I don't eat beef at all, or any other meat or fish for that matter, aside from chicken. I've lately been cutting up a little avocado into every meal, which has added a bit more calories healthily, I just find myself not being the least bit hungry. Running and exercising usually makes me quite hungry, but add sitting in the sun to that mix and it almost entirely eliminates my appetite.

| Weight Gain | "Guys like girls with curves!" | Jun 25 2008 21:00 (UTC) |
|
I'm not saying that thin girls don't also purchase 'curvy' - just that I frequently see larger-sized women buying them, possibly because they're more generously cut in some areas and, perhaps, will allow someone who really should be wearing a 22 to purchase a 'curvy' 20 at Gap and feel good about themselves that they "finally fit into xxxxx brand" or could "finally shop at xxxx store.".. and since they may feel that those pants fit the best (i.e. the smallest size, whether they look/feel the best or not), they may bestow the label 'curvy' to themselves.
That's all I'm saying.. regarding both the "big girls calling themselves curvy instead of outright fat" (not a direct quote by anyone..) situation and the post from carmanna. |

I also should add that.. at my start weight of 253 (and being 5'1), I was very comfortable in a size 18, non-stretch jean from American Eagle. It really depends on where you store your fat, as well as how much of your body fat IS indeed fat and how much is muscle mass. |

Also, the larger size clothing (ladies/womens sizes) has a larger gap between sizes. Check out the Old Navy.. Gap.. AE.. etc jeans size charts if you're curious. They won't paste nicely, and it's in a popup on the website.. Basically, over size 14, instead of each size being 1" different, they're 2".. which means that if you're wearing a larger size, it takes a greater loss/shrinkage to need to go down in size. |

I'll definitely give that a try.. thanks! The recipe I found on here said to replace ALL wet ingredients with 12oz Diet Coke. To be honest, I was expecting it to be GROSS.. but I have to say.. even the batter tasted damn good (haha whoa that makes me sound like a slob, eh?) |

I was actually under the impression that, with the "soda" cakes (personally I tried the Diet Coke cake), that was supposed to replace all liquids (eggs/oil/water).. I tried it a few times and it TASTED good, but the texture was still a little off from regular cake - it was VERY wet and heavy - not pleasantly moist - more soggy - sort of like it was undercooked, although it was in the oven for 20 minutes longer than it should have been and, by the knife test, it was cooked. |

This forum may be geared towards weight gainers, but certainly not the entire site.
I'm just saying.. realize that when you offend one group, the counter-comment will offend the others. You're never going to make anyone happy. If I were you, I'd pretend like I don't hear the comments from other people. Fat people get just as much criticism, perhaps more (based on image alone: Oh, so and so is fat, s/he must be lazy, not exercise and stuff their face full of junk food every day.) There are two sides to every coin.

Not to begin a fight.. but.. When (at least in the USA) all of the media being thrown at us gives the impression that size 0/2 is the only definition of beauty, how do you think it makes those of us that wear a 20/22.. or a 30/32.. feel? "We are happy, but aren't happy with our bodies, we are underweight, we have very low bmi's and to be healthy we need to gain to meet that..." could be changed exactly to "We are happy, but aren't happy with our bodies, we are OVERweight, we have very HIGH bmi's and to be healthy we need to LOSE to meet that." Much of your post can easily be applied to very thin AND very overweight people.
The bottom line is that by saying something, a group of people are always going to be upset by it. You can't please them all, eh? |

Coming from someone overweight here.. I do consider myself "curvy", not in an effort to feel better about being FAT, but because, despite being heavy, I have very similar measurements to one of my thin, but highly curvaceous friends. Not similar in actual numbers, but similar in proportion. I have a clear hourglass figure, even though what may be causing it IS, in fact, FAT. Also, it's not helpful to us that many of the popular stores (Old Navy, Gap, for example) have a style, Curvy, that tends to fit ladies of a larger size. While, yes, they make them in size 00/0, I've rarely seen a woman smaller than ~14/16 purchasing these "Curvy" cut jeans. I think that that could be part of the problem. |

Hey, Thanks for the tip. I'll try bumping it down and logging things separately. I guess I should have probably said that I don't log separate activities because I've read a bunch of places that the activity is taken into account in the burn meter, whether it's logged at sedentary or very active, that I just leave it at the moderate setting and leave it at that. I'm up on my feet chasing after kids all day (I'm a camp counselor, kids aged 4-12, for 8 hours.. outside on a huge playground/field) then come home to chase my sister's 2 1/2 year old twin girls for another 4 hours or so.. then a decent gym workout. I figured moderately active was a pretty decent setting.

Your lats are on your back and sides, basically running parallel with your triceps.. Resistance bands are just basically giant thick rubber bands that you can do various strengthening exercises with.
You may want to see a doctor -- I'm obviously not sure that what you have is the same as what I have, but if it indeed IS Instable Shoulder, it's not a HUGE deal |

I have a similar problem and have been to an orthopedist about it. He sent me for an MRI and found that I have Instable Shoulder Syndrome. It is partially from overuse, partially a loose joint issue and partially an imbalance of muscles. I was sent to physical therapy 3x a week for a month. What we had found was that my traps were excessively strong and my lats were much too weak to compensate, which resulted in pulling muscles and dislocating/popping/yucky sounds being produced every time I lifted something. When I turned my arms inward at my sides, my shoulders used to pop -- it never hurt and, when I was younger, I thought it was funny that I could "play songs" with them. I still every so often have this happen, but I found that strengthening my lats really helped to "rebalance" things. My PT had me use resistance bands and a few of the weight machines that build up that area. |

| Fitness | Feel the burn.... or not. | Jun 03 2008 20:52 (UTC) |

I rarely feel the post-workout soreness at all -- even the next day.
I increased my weights yesterday and did fewer reps, but am still finding that I don't feel anything. And I'm a little bit embarrassed (but also proud of myself) that I've maxed out the weight on almost all of the lower body and core machines -- the men look at me funny when I'm comfortably doing 315lbs on a leg press and barely breaking a sweat from it. Oyy.
Thanks for the idea, alstones. I guess I just didn't realize how much muscle I really DO have under all this stupid fat. At 15 years old (being about 4'10 and 100lbs at the time) I was bench pressing about 200lbs.. I've always been a little bit of a "monster" LOL |

I'll try increasing a little bit. I just feel like I should be feeling SOME sort of soreness, you know? I'm at the point that I don't think I could exert myself any more or for any longer, and my body gets pretty pissed off while I'm doing the exercises, but a minute after I stop, I feel normal again.
Man, seems like whoever made up that saying "No pain, no gain" lied. A lot. |

Have you thought about, instead of throwing them away, donating them to Goodwill/Salvation Army/another organization?
Mypersonal problem with the Salvation Army is that they turn around and sell the clothing I give to them. I take mine to a local church who GIVES them away to people that are in need. I think they might offer a tax write-off of some sort if there are enough clothes donated, but to be honest I'm just against giving them something, maybe getting a $2.50 write-off for it, but them selling it for $8-$10.. |
