Health & Support Anybody know anything about cytomel? Oct 29 2008

For me, cytomel is the best thing that has ever happened to me. It's worked WONDERS. (although it has not helped me lose weight--which I find very Odd. November will be one year I've been taking it).

Original Post by melbo18:

Hey all,

This is for all of you out there who deal with metabolic disorders... I was wondering what you all know about the drug cytomel?  Around the middle of March, I began seeing an endocrinologist about my hypothyroidism.  I have been on synthroid since I was eleven years old (I just turned 23, so for over half of my life), and I have always been heavy.  Recently, within the last couple of years, I also started dealing with bad scalp psoriasis and some depression, which I was told by my family doctor could be caused by my hypothyroidism.  I started seeing this endocrinologist, and he prescribed me some cytomel to take with my synthroid.  I'm taking 125 mcg of synthroid every day, plus now I'm taking half of a 25 mcg pill of cytomel every other day.  I don't know if that's a normal dosage of cytomel or not... but I want to know, if any of you out there are taking it, how does it affect you?

My weight has always been high since I was a little girl, thanks to my wonderful hypothyroid, which made it difficult for me to lose weight.  2 years ago, at 5'3" I weighed 230 pounds, but I was as happy as a clam.  Then some stuff happened, depression set in, and I began dabbling with what some people call an eating disorder.  The weight started to fly off... it was the only way that I had tried that ever worked for me.  I tried calorie restriction and exercise... none of it worked, I just couldn't get the weight to budge.  Anyways, to make a long story short, I'm still healing from some stuff, but in the meantime, I've been attempting just to be healthy, and forget about this last little bit of weight I have to lose.

I started taking the cytomel on March 18.  In the just over a month that I've been taking it, I have been eating on average 1650 calories per day, running 16-20 miles per week, as well as living a pretty busy life as a college student who is student teaching and attempting what some of my professors have called an impossible double major.  Many of my depressive symptoms have begun to clear up, I don't feel so hopeless and sad all the time.  I can wake up in the morning without feeling like I've been run over by a truck; I actually get up an hour before class starts feeling rested, instead of five minutes before class and feeling like a slug!  I feel like I've been binging on that many calories, but miraculously, I have been losing about a pound per week, sometimes more.  Last Saturday April 21, I weighed 147 lbs 10 ounces.  Today I weighed 144 pounds 13 ounces.  I am not sure how this is happening... I was NEVER able to do this on just the synthroid.  Is this the cytomel?  Is this what my body has been missing all of those years on synthroid when I couldn't get any weight to budge off my hips?

Ok... enough of me... I'm just kind of excited about this and I had to share.  If anybody has had any similar experiences, please share!

I'm assuming that's a Typo, but Cytomel works on your T3 (not T4). T4 is the agent that makes changes in the T3, and it's ultimately what you want to "correct" ...but just to make clear, Cytomel works on T3 levels.
Original Post by coffeetalk67:

I have been on both Cytomel and Synthroid for a couple of years now. Synthroid helps to keep your TSH level normal and Cytomel helps with the T4.  It is important that you take the Synthroid first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with no other meds and then take the Cytomel a little later.  It took a few months of taking both drugs for me to see a difference.  The important thing about these meds is to work with your doctor to figure out what levels your body functions best with.  For example a TSH can be 2.0 and still be considered normal but if mine is higher than .5 I gain weight, have the itchy skin, get really bitchy and sleep all the time, so I make the doctor tell me the actual blood levels and go with how my body is reacting to determine proper doses.  Luckily for me I have found a great family doctor and an excellent endocrinologist to follow my hypothyroid dysfunction.  I am glad it is working for you!

Yes, unfortunately I think WAY TOO MANY people fall into this trap. Almost like a learned helplessness. I surely did. I kept INSISTING to Dr's *something* must be wrong with me, and NONE would listen until I finally found the right one.
Actually, if you think about it. A job as a Dr. is just like any other job. A Dr. does not want to "create" more work for himself, so they are VERY UNLIKELY to use the good old scientific method they learned in school....Just like us, they have kids, chores, other stuff to do...so they'll always do the least amount of work possible. That's why I mention going to a younger Dr.  If you think about it. A Younger Dr. is fresh out of school, "eager", still has the skip in his step wanting to make an improvement on the world. He's more likely too keep up with current events, read trade publications, etc. This is all because he's not been "soured" by HMO's, Insurance, and all the other hassles that go with running a medical practice.   In my mind, I'd search out a young Dr. that's willing to TREAT you as an individual patient.
Original Post by prettyd33:

I think that is sooo true!  I have been through so many endos and most of them are old as hell!  I got this new one this past June, and when I described my symptoms, he didn't even hesitate to add cytomel.  I go back next month for a follow up and blood work...the only thing I was skeptical of was the fact that my Synthroid was cut back from .125 to only .88.  Is that standard?

Give it a few weeks, THEN tell your husband to come home and check on you dusting in your B-Day suit!!! :-)....
It took me about 3 solid weeks before it worked, but BOY OH BOY WHEN IT DID...you'll wonder how in the hell you survived in your "old self" it will be such a DRAMATIC improvement.....don't give up....
Original Post by laxwife:

I am so thrilled to hear this!

I am also hypo with no results on levoxyl.  Started taking 25mcg of cytomel yesterday (day 1) along with my .075 levoxyl.  Was secretly hoping for all of those "miracle reactions" that some people report immediately.

I even told  my husband to come home for lunch and perhaps he might find me prancing around the house in a french maid's outfit dusting everything in sight!

Ohhh, but sadly, that was not the case.  Day one on cytomel came and went with no change for me.  I remained my usual "Queen of Slugville" self, with as much energy as NYC during a blackout. Frown

Did I mention that I'm impatient??!

So here we go on day two of cytomel.  I have marked my calendar so that I can refer back and mark any significant changes, and how long it took to kick in (if it ever will).  I am going to give it 4 weeks at 25mcg/day along with my levoxyl to see if I notice any changes.  After that, I'm going to ask for a boost in my daily cytomel dosage...maybe 50mcg/day??

I should also mention that I am not your typical hypo thyroid patient, as I don't seem to have weight issues.  I am a happily married 42 year-old stay-home mother of three schoolage children.  6 feet tall, 145 lbs, very athletic and active.

Been hypo for the last 21 years.  My symptoms for the last 18 months include:

HAIRLOSS, constant fatigue (cannot emphasize that enough), constipation, memory loss, brain fog.  Did I mention memory loss?  I can't remember...

(joke!!)

Anyway, I hope to report my findings while on cytomel for anyone who might have an interest.  I do know that drugs work differently on all people.  Such is the diverse and complicated makeup of all of us!  Good luck to everyone.

I hope to start feeling better soon, as I am sitting here STILL in my jammies and slippers...sad but true...10:23 am.  Wow.  QUEEN OF SLUGVILLE!!!

Hey,

I'm only about 17 months late responding, however this is for others who might search forums for advice.

To put it bluntly, you CANNOT eat at Moe's if you are watching calories.

And, to answer your original question, black beans are better than pinto.

Here is the Nutrition Information for Moe's....(you'll be shocked).

This reply is about 7-months late, but wanted to post this link for others who might want to look for Nutrition Information on Moe's.

To put it bluntly, you CANNOT eat at Moe's if you are on a strict calorie diet (and want to stay on your diet).

750+ Calories

almost 50% of Daily Fat value in that one small burito

An example, a Joey Bag of donuts has almost 100% of your daily sodium value, in that ONE SMALL BURITO.

I was floored when I went to look for information.

(thank God I only ate 1/4 of my Burito last night).

I thought FOR SURE Chipolte would be worse, and it appears that Moe's is the worst violator..

I've never tried Hydroxycut, however I've had great results using

Ginko Biloba

Energy Now.

http://xtremeformulavitamins.com/catalog/prod uct_info.php?products_id=28

This stuff will turn your body into a blast furnace.

If you don't want to invest that much, you can find them by the pack at your local QT-Quick Trip (if they have them in your area). If you like them, it's cheaper to order them direct.

Only downside is that it might make you a bit hyper. And you'll sweat a lot just sitting there or with minimal exertion.

However, you WON'T have the Ephedra-like-side effects of feeling like you have spiders crawling on your head. *grin*

Hi Melkor,

The only comment I would have regarding Yoga, is that there is maximum benefit when it comes to stretching the muscle.  So, while not necessarily a tool for weight loss, it could be thought of as a tool to learn how to treat your body/muscles while participating in a  Weight Training regime.  (that some people fail to properly stretch before working out---thus Yoga can teach them this).

Hi Sun,

Thanks for the reply.

I might have thrown you off a bit with the term "Pretzel"....essentially Mellow Mushroom "Pretzels" are bread sticks tied into a pretzel shape.

I like the Calorie counts for the links you provided, *grin*.. but I'm guessing a "bread stick" would have more calories, right?  I'm not sure.

Below is my full Weight Training work out.
Every work out session, I do 45-60 minutes cardio before weight training.
A "Brisk Walk" 3.4-3.7 m.p.h

I have a few questions on my Weight Training....

I WAS doing this full body each session. (stopped doing that).
Now I know I need to split upper and lower between days.

Here's the question.
When I work out, it's "somewhat" of a challenge on the last few reps on SOME of these sets.

However, I never "fail out" on any of my reps of my last sets.
Neither, am I sore after working out.
I think lacking soreness is a blessing, however I want to make sure that I'm actually WORKING the muscles.

I feel "challenged" when doing the work (but this might be more mental).

Should I up the weight a plate (20-lbs) to challenge myself
OR
Should I add another set to each, doing 4x12 on each? (same weight)

Also, I'm very concerned about my weakness on my

Hey Bodyscience....

Now I know how important it is to rest the muscle (actually, I already knew this but ignored it for December because I set such an aggressive goal for myself).

I made a Goal to lift 1,000,000-one million pounds for the month.
(that's my 2nd month back in the GYM. *grin*)
(I picked that number so I could come in "First Place" for my Age Group at the Gym).

Finished with 1,039,719-lbs in weight lifted. I came in 104% of my Goal!

Not sure if you've ever heard of "FitLInxx", but it's the computer system that monitors every Rep, Set and Station you work out on during a session. (it even measures performance, so you can't "cheat" and lift half way and count it). It makes you do full form before it adds it as a rep.

So, that 1,039,719--is Literal, no fudge factor. *big grin*.

Coincidentally, I slowed down during the holidays......

I took off 12/31 and 1/1 and 1/3.

So, I think I might have jumped the gun on my "complaint" with lack of weight loss..

I weighed myself on January 1 (for "end of December" results)
As of Jan 1. I was down to 225.5
(my peak in December was 235- beginning of December) and peak of 238 since I started working out in October.

So, I found that I've actually lost 12.5-lbs since I started working out...(9.5 in December). hich is the great news!!

The "bad news" is that I'm very competitive (especially against myself).

Coming in First Place does WONDERS for my attitude about working out and going to the GYM. (almost more than the actual weight loss).

I went to the GYM 21 times,

Average visit length of 174 minutes or 2 hours 54 minutes.
Total of 60 hours :55 minutes :35 seconds (they count *grin*) working out for the month!!

My ranks were:
1st Place— Weight Lifted, 30-39 year old Age Group
1st Place— Calories Burned, 30-39 year old Age Group

2nd Place—Calories Burned, against ALL Males
5th Place---Weight Lifted against ALL Males
as comparison
4th place Weight Lifted—1,055,450 lbs.
3rd place Weight Lifted—1,317,920 lbs.
2nd place Weight Lifted—2,059,145 lbs.
1st place Weight Lifted—2,606,865 lbs.

So, here's the "rub". I need to stay competitive AND be healthy to my body.
Can you look at my routine and offer advice as to what I could add/change to remain competitive AND work out healthy!!

Weight Loss When will the "extra" show? Jan 02 2008

P.S.

That's why it's a good idea to start a meal by eating lettuce (or other green, leafy vegetables)

They take up space in your stomach, make you feel full, and the entree you eat, you'll eat less and also feel full.

AND, the added bonus is the lettuce calories are burned up right away.

That's incorrect.....

You do not "gain weight" by EATING 3,500 calories.....

The 3,500 number is how much you need to BURN to burn off a pound of fat.

You gain weight by FAILING TO BURN OFF the Calories you take in.

(for example, some severly overweight people need 4,000 or more to "Maintain" weight). Body Builders in training can in take 4000-5000 calories a day during their peak work out sessions, because they are burning so many calories working out.

Calories are NOT a measurement related to "weight gain"--it's a measurement tool of ENERGY to BURN off what you have taken in. Of course you will gain weight if you take in more calories than you burn....thus why we "count calories"...

Eating a Pound of Lettuce for lunch, you will gain ONE POUND of weight

HOWEVER, by the end of the day (or quicker) you will have burned off most of that weight you gained because it only takes about 50 calories to burn that off.

Your body will not have the time necessary to take and turn that into fat, because it's been burned up too quickly.

The Pound Hamburger takes 1600 calories, so unless you are burning 1600+ calories working out in one day (essentially impossible to do that daily), you are going to take that excess and turn it into fat.....because your food in-take never stops....everyday you're eating breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Thus, when couting calories, you basically want to burn 500 more calories a day than you take in, or 3,500 calories NET, that YOU BURNED OFF in a week and resulted in loosing a pound of weight.

Hey, for some reason, a lady was unable to post to this thread, but had a question for my statement....

----Original Message----

For some reason I can't post on the forum, so I'm sending my comment to you this way instead.

A lettuce calorie is better than a hamburger calorie? A calorie is a unit of energy. One calorie = one calorie regardless of source. Can you back up the claim that lettuce calories are "easier to burn"?

Chemically, releasing the calories from lettuce, meat, cardboard, or whatever else should be very similar, and equal in terms of energy.

-----My follow-up / Clarification------

You can only gain a pound of weight, by eating a pound of food

Whenever you eat, YOU GAIN WEIGHT according to the amount of weight the food weighs....

You are ADDING something to your Gut your body has to carry around.....

Calories are not a measurement tool to show "weight", calories are a measurement tool to show ENERGY NECESSARY TO BURN....and in all our cases, we want to "BURN" weight/fat.

It takes more ENERGY to burn off the pound of Hamburger Calories than it does the pound of Lettuce Calories....

When you gain weight, you gain by the VOLUME of food you intake vs. the amount you can burn off....whatever you cannot burn off, turns into stored fat.....

The Pound Hamburger is--...say 1600 Calories..(MCDonals 1/4 pound is 410 calories)...The Pound of Lettuce is only say....41 calories--(55g is 5 calories, 453g make up a pound)

It's EASIER to "Burn off" the Pound of Lettuce becuase the pound of lettuce is less calories.

The entire point is, when you eat (whatever it is)....you are putting on WEIGHT.

You eat a pound of Lettuce you gain a pound of weight.

You eat a pound  Hamburger you gain a pound of weight.

You're going to burn off the "pound of weight gain" from lettuce, in less than a day.  You going to burn off the "pound of weight gain" from a Hamburger in a week or more.

Think of it this way, say you Buy a Pound Hamburger, A Large French Fries, and a Large coke....take and put that food on a scale.....if that food weights 1.5 pounds....once you eat that, you are going to GAIN 1.5 pounds...(of course your body is at work burning off that food once you take it in)...

It's no different that if you held those in your hands (before you ate them), and stepped on the scale to weigh yourself.  If you're holding 1.5 pounds (in your hands or in your Gut), you have GAINED 1.5 pounds.

Same is true with Lettuce, you eat one pound, you GAIN one pound in weight..

However, it will burn off very very quickly......

ou can eat a pound of Lettuce or you can eat a Pound of Hamburger....either way, you are still going to GAIN a Pound in weight to your body.....

Where is counts, is how EASY it is to burn off the pound of lettuce vs the pound of hamburger.....

Weight Loss When will the "extra" show? Jan 02 2008

Every single time you put a spec of food in your mouth you “gain weight”......
Before I turn anyone into an anorexic or bulimic, READ THE REST!!!

You literally "gain weight-a pound" by eating a pound of food.

When you gain weight it's Literal, meaning it takes LITERALLY eating a pound of food to gain a pound.

(this is why, when you are dieting, you are told to NOT focus on your daily weight. It will fluctuate throughout the day and from day to day. What you want is a TREND LINE going down....which takes time).

The reason/fact we count calories is to measure how much ENERGY it takes to burn off that pound.

Did you ever have a Chemistry professor take a donought and catch it on fire to show you the difficulty in burning it? That's literally what your body is doing when it's burning calories.

The definition of a Calorie is
"A unit of energy defined as that amount of energy required to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius"

It is "more calories" (thus more engery required to raise the temperature of those calories and burn them off---in a Hamburger, vs. a Salad.

Put it this way.

You can choose to eat one of the following.

A One Pound Hamburger
OR
One Pound of Lettuce

Either way, you are still going to "GAIN" a Pound.

It's no different than if you picked up and held that in your hands while you weigh yourself, or it's in your Gut...either way it's still part of what you are weighing on the scale.

THIS IS WHY PORTION SIZE IS SO IMPORTANT!!!

Here is the point:
Whenever and Whatever you eat, you "gain weight".

HOWEVER, even when not exercising, a healthy body is burning calories.
This is called Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR); it is the number of calories you'd burn if you stayed in bed all day.
Go Here to find yours: http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calc ulator.htm

For example, a 5'5", 175, 27 year old Female has a BMR of 1531 Calories/day
She BURNS 1531 calories a day DOING NOTHING, ZERO.

In order to Lose weight, you have to burn more calories than you take in.

A Fat Loss Diet for this person is :1470 Calories/day (no exercise).

Let's say she decides to go on a MASSIVE Work Out Schedule
5 days week/Intense Exercise
Would need: 1899 Calories/day

Did you notice the caloric IN TAKE WENT UP!!! HOW CAN THIS BE? Because your body needs more fuel when working out.

Therefore, "WEIGHT LOSS" IS NOT JUST ABOUT CUTTING CALORIES!!!!

In addition to working out, you have to take into account your daily life style.

Do you sit behind a desk all day? OR, are you a Student who walks to class, walks from building to building between classes? Climbs the stairs to go to class, etc.

That's calorie burn, you have to add that to your exercise and take into consideration when determining your caloric IN TAKE needs.

If you cut back too much on the calories your body needs your body will go into "panic mode" and start storing away the small amount of food you bring in as "fat" (for future energy), because it realizes you are working out like crazy but not getting what you need so it wants to "save some" for the future.

Ever see the starving children in Ethiopia commercials...sometimes they have a "belly"...it's because of MALNUTRITION. The very little amount of food they are eating, their body is trying to "store" that for future use....because the body is in starvation mode........

Same thing applies if you are working out hard, but not bring in enough calories....your body thinks something is wrong and wants to conserve fat for future use...

"FAT", body fat, is NOT a "bad thing"...its EXCESS BODY FAT that is a bad thing.

THE KEY DIFFERENCE IS, that it's EASIER to BURN off one Calorie of Lettuce than it is one calorie of Hamburger.

It is more difficult to catch a Hamburger on fire and burn it out than it is lettuce.

It is when your body fails to use up/burn of that excess that it will TURN IT INTO FAT and STORE IT AWAY for later use. (because if you have not "burned it up" your body has nowhere else to put it).

THAT is why it is VITAL you heat your body up, to a SWEAT, while working out.
The "sweat" is your body's version of the fire-fighter trying to put out the fire (increase in body temp) that you are creating while trying to burn those food calories.

So, watch portion size.
Watch WHAT you eat (so you can burn it off easier)
and
Exercise...

And you WILL loose weight.

The Biggest Loser is WITHOUT A DOUBT THE BIGGEST FRAUD in "Reality T.V." (remember, "Reality T.V." IS NOT REAL).

Although I have not verified your statement, I believe it sounds correct....

They are on a 1500 calorie intake per day + their 4 hours per day training. *Not* a 500 calorie intake per day. I saw the form, it said, "1500."

For a Trainer to put someone who weighs 500 +lbs, on a 1,500 calorie a day diet ALONG WITH 4+ hours exercise is CRIMINAL!!

Someone who weighs 500+ lbs, doing “Vigorous” exercise, is probably burning 400-500 calories an hour (remember, more you weigh, more you burn---and more IN TAKE you also need).....so that person is burning 1200-1500 a day. THAT IS HORRENDOUSLY Unhealthy for an Obese person to do that much and have that little in-take of food.

That is a set up for complete and utter failure.

I saw the Larry King special, and already one of the Women is gaining weight back (you can see it in her face).

A 1,500 calorie a day diet for someone NORMAL weight is aggressive, (that's a 25% reduction in the suggested daily intake of 2000 calories). Aggressive for a near weight person, much less someone morbidly obese.

I ABSOLUTELY 100% GUARANTEE YOU OVER 90% OF THE CONTESTANTS PUT THE WEIGHT BACK ON IN 4 YEARS OR LESS.

It angers me to no end that over-weight people watch that Garbage and believe it will help them loose weight....

For example, the CRAP where the trainers are yelling at them and pushing them to work harder, as if they should match what she can do....CRAP......CRAP.........CRAP......

If you're that obese, you need a life-style change. You need a way to find enjoyment in working out. I don't care if all you can do is walk 2 miles a day at a slow pace, AS LONG AS YOU DO IT, and as long as you ENJOY IT (so that it becomes part of a LIFE-STYLE---like a HOBBY), then you will CONTINUE to do it, and inevitably the weight will come off as you exercise more and eat healthy.

Yes, exercise has to be vigorous to “count”. However, a 500+ lbs person is going to break a sweat walking 2-miles. As long as you “break a sweat” and increase your heart rate, you're burning calories.

I must admit, the finale' is fun to watch to see how different everyone looks and how happy they are, but I GUARANTEE YOU, the weight will come back for 90%+ of them.

Fitness Increase weights by how much? Jan 02 2008

I've asked one of my “Coaches” (I work out at the YMCA and the trainers are called “Coaches”). His advice to me was that your last set (I do 3x12 sets), that the last HALF of the LAST set should be pushed to exhaustion. So, you're last 2-3 reps should be a significant exertion of energy.

If you fail out anything below 6 reps, on last set, take the weight down a plate.
A set should be no lower than 8-reps and no more than 12/15 reps. (8's are for beginners).

Therefore an example work-out (on a Chest-Press machine), for me is
1x12—140lbs (just my personal style to start lower and move up—gets me over the mental block).
2x12—150lbs (where my last 4 in the third set are burning).

The ultimate point is that you want to work the muscle.
Listen to your body and be honest with yourself and you'll know if you are actually “challenging” the muscle.---by the way, you DON'T want to be “in pain” the next day.

I'm told that too many people over work when working out (thus burn themselves out).

You should leave the GYM WITH ENERGY!!

Yes, when done working out, you should feel ENERGIZED!!

If you feel like you need to take a long nap or need a long relaxation in the jacuzzi, you're overworking yourself and need to re-examine your routine.

Weight Loss Scales?! Dec 31 2007

I use a Tanita scale that also measures Body Fat %.

I have a much older model (that I got when they first came out about 10+ years ago).

I just checked one of the major Bedding and Bath supply stores, and they are selling them for $29.95, which is a very good deal.

I kind of agree with you. I did take off 3-days right around Christmas..(23,24,25)...and going back on the 26th, I felt like I had been gone for 3 YEARS...it was tough....so I'm nervous about slowing down....

However, what's Ironic, is I looked over my old reports....and I don't think I went 6-days in a row, more than 2x the entire 7-9 months I was going to the GYM....

I'm definitely going to slow down the intensity next month...

I agree with Bodyscience, you're still young. Your body is not done maturing yet.

In addition, you mentioned it's your first year in University.

We have a saying here in the U.S. called "The Freshman 15".

It means that MOST people gain about 15-lbs their first year of University.

DO NOT WORRY, it's NORMAL.....There's lot's of debate as to why this occurs, but it does occur.

Instead of concentrating on different body parts, concentrate on the whole.

Do you have a way to track your body fat percentage? For example, I have a weight scale that I can step on and it will tell me weight and body fat %.  It's a much better (and rewarding) number to track.

Those times when you work really hard, but the weight scale only changes a pound but the body fat % goes down, you actually "see" the % coming off.

Most of all, if you're exercising and eating properly, everything will fall into place..(maybe not in the place you FIRST want it to..but overall, it will all work out).

Also, make sure the work out you do is "enjoyable". If you like running, do that...don't let someone tell you what "should be doing"....continue with healthy life style, allow yourself a cheat ONCE here and there...and you'll be just fine...

How are thing going with school?  I suppose university in U.K. is not much different that the U.S.

Are the admission standards difficult?  Do you have to take any tests (like our S.A.T.) to enter University?
