I forgot to weigh in yesterday, but I weighed in today after I ate breakfast, ran for 30 minutes, drank 64oz of water, and was wearing my shoes, pants, and sweat-soaked t-shirt, and I came in at 182!  Which has to be better than the 181 I was at sans all those extra factors.  Anyone have a guess as to how much all that extra water weight/sweat/shoes/clothes might have been?  I've never had a good guess on that...

Weight Loss Any other tall people trying to lose weight? Apr 02 2008

Ugh.  I hear you all.

I'm 5'10 & 3/4" and at 181lbs, the most I have ever weighed in my life, and I hate it.  I absolutely cannot stand it.  I want to get to 150 or 155, but I just can't see how that's ever going to happen.  The last time I even remember being in the 150s was when I was in highschool.  I've been trying to lose the same 20-30lbs for about 2 years now, and it's just not happening.  No matter what I do it won't come off.  I'm hoping this CC thing will help, but so far I've broken my calorie allowance nearly every day.

Any other tall girls have advice on how to lose weight?  It really really just doesn't come off, no matter what I try.  I feel like this is my last ditch effort or else I'll just give up.  Seems like a lot of people are hovering around the 170s-190s looking to get to 150...

Young Calorie Counters not getting into the college of your choice? Mar 29 2008

amberrr,

I don't think there is a set "limit" to how many times you can apply, but admissions is looking to see a change in your academics, or progressive change otherwise, between each application. If you don't get in the first time around, the second time admissions will look to see how you've spent that year. Did you raise your GPA? Did you gain a leadership experience, ie internship, volunteer, etc? It is typically somewhat difficult to get into a school you were originally denied admissions to without making a significant change to your application.

peacecalilove,

Do you have other options besides UCSC and USF? Going into a school knowing you'll transfer might not be the greatest time. As for the work-study, it's not classified as "official" work-study, but after all the jobs are assigned to students who qualified for financial aid, often times schools will open up the left over jobs to students who didn't receive a large enough financial aid package. It's more of an "on-campus job", as opposed to work-study, but you still receive a paycheck, and you can put this money towards your tuition. If you have your heart set on a school but can't afford it, make an appointment with someone in the financial aid office to talk about options, such as on-campus, or nearby off-campus, jobs.

Weight Loss Vegan lifestyle Mar 29 2008

I've been vegan for a few years now, and I think the biggest misconception is that a food will be good for you just because it's vegan.  Vegan desserts are amazing but just as calorie-filled as the real thing, and there's absolutely fantastic vegan recipes that are probably loaded with calories!

When I first started going vegan I dropped about 10lbs right away because I had suddenly cut out high-calorie dairy, and hadn't learned how to make vegan cookies yet Wink.

However, a properly managed vegan diet is incredibly healthy.  How much weight, if any, you lose in that transition depends on what you eat now.  Either way, a healthy vegan diet will by no means hinder, and will probably help, your weight loss goals!

Even a $2,000 scholarship can make a little bit of a difference, but when it comes down to it, choose the school that fits you best regardless of money.  Money is difficult, but it tends to work itself out one way or another.  Have you looked into work-study options?  Even if you don't qualify for work-study as a form of official financial aid, many schools are able to find you a small job if you request it.

Young Calorie Counters Workout Music? Mar 29 2008

I will be perfectly honest and unload my deepest, darkest secret to you CC members.

I listen to the Hannah Montana 2 Soundtrack when I work out.

It's disgusting, I know, and I can't even listen to it when I'm not working out, but try it.  Although I am no longer a tween, or even a teen, for some odd reason "Nobody's Perfect" and "We Got the Party" have great beats for elliptical workouts.

Give it a try; just don't show your friends what's on your iPod...

Making decisions about colleges can be incredibly difficult, especially when you have your heart set on one for whatever reason (program, reputation, location, etc).

Did you apply to more than USF and Berkeley? Looking at how many colleges kids apply to these days, I'm going to assume you have multiple schools to choose from. Take a step back and forget about the rankings you had in your mind before you received acceptance letters. Let those all go, and only look at the schools you've been accepted to, not the ones you wish you could attend. Write down your priorities for a college. Do you want a specific major? Perhaps a pre-professional program (pre-med, pre-law)? A certain club, demographic, or political orientation? Then go back and see what schools best fit these priorities, and go from there. But remember, don't ignore the gut instincts and feelings you get being on campus! These are just as important as what's on your paper!

As for money:

Paying for college in America is hard for nearly everyone. It sucks. But luckily there's plenty of scholarships, work-study options, tuition reimbursement programs (ie if you work for certain volunteer programs after college, they'll help with your debt), and it's becoming more and more popular for businesses to assist their college new-hires with paying off loans! As for now, search the web for scholarships; you can get money for nearly anything if you look in the right places! The only thing I would not recommend is joining ROTC or other military programs as a way to pay for college. This is a serious commitment of your life, and is by no means on par with taking out loans or grants; these two options are not interchangeable. (ROTC is best for those who would go into the military regardless, and would like a college education prior to their service, not the other way around.)

And best of all, you can always transfer! I know that sounds semi-scary, but I did it, many of my friends have, as well as both my parents! It's difficult to make the right choice about college when you've never even been to college! Don't rely on this option as you pick a school, but if you arrive on campus and realize you have truly made the wrong choice for whatever reason (you can't afford the school, you change your major, etc), it can be done!

Sorry for the long, detailed, and probably boring response, but I know this time of the year puts a huge stress on high school Seniors. Best of luck with your college search, I'm sure you will be successful in time!

Fitness Stationary bike vs. normal bike Mar 27 2008

I'm no expert, but I would think a regular bike just because of the varying resistance levels, hills, and the upper body effort that you don't naturally find on a stationary (unless you're constantly pressing buttons while you ride Laughing).

Absolutely!  Thank you for all the advice!  I calculated my BMR and then multiplied it by 1.2 (for sedentary lifestyle, but once again, I'm working on that Laughing), which left me at 1922.4.  It also said though, that for fat loss, you should subtract 500, which puts me at 1422.  Searching the CC forums though, it seems to be that you shouldn't eat below 1500?

Vegetarian I did it!!! Mar 26 2008

I know it's frustrating because being a new vegetarian can be quite a challenge, but from a seasoned vegan, any "mock meat" or boxed products should really be avoided.  They're just as bad for your health as the real thing.  If you're short on time, there's plenty of quick-fix options that you can make without any special products (which will be cheaper too!).  Try a bean burrito (brown rice, beans, lettuce, tomato, etc, avoid the cheese), natural pb&j on rice cakes (to avoid the higher calories), salad with beans or tofu, or maybe whip up a quick smoothie.  If you're really, truly on the go 24-7 and don't have time, then grab some food bars at the grocery, but read the ingredients carefully!!!  If you can't pronounce it, don't eat it!  I recommend Organic Food Bars as a meal replacement if you truly must skip out on natural food.  Best of luck!  Hang in there!!

Weight Loss 3 week weight loss challenge?!??! Mar 26 2008

I found this thread too late!  I could really use a three week 10lbs motivator.  I'm 5'10", and unfortunately at my highest weight yet, 180lbs.  I was hoping to be down to 160 by the middle of May, and around 145 by the end of August.   Another 3 week challenge to April 15th?  Perhaps we can send in our lost weight instead of taxes...
