When my dad had to make weight (when he was in the military) he would only eat dinner and nothing else. |

That always happens for me when I start a new exercise routine. I'm usually up 3 pounds for a week or so, and I have to assume it's just water since I know I'm eating fewer calories than I'm burning. |

I've wondered about that, too. If I get up early I usually end up eating an extra mini-breakfast, so I've wondered if those calories balance out. (Not worried, just wondered.)

Mission does make "Carb balance" tortillas but I think basically they just added fiber to lower the "net" carbs. I'm not a low-carb-er but I just think they taste better. |

I did Level 2 for the first time yesterday afternoon. Wow! I was wiped. It was good, though. How I felt when I did Level 1 the first time. Level 1 had gotten to the point where it was still a good workout but not as hard as when I first started. Level two had me back to where I was breathing really hard and really feeling it. |

I put in just a teaspoon (about forty calories) and plenty of salt and I like it. |

That's the thing I think is so tricky about the popcorn labels. They list the servings based on unpopped kernels, but then they give you the calories in a cup, and most people would assume the one cup corresponds to one serving size but it doesn't. |

I think the ones that say 100 calorie bags are actually smaller than normal bags. If you have a scale, it couldn't hurt to weigh the popcorn from the bag and see how it compares to the CC stats for plain, air popped popcorn. |

Oh, also, just fyi some people will still take offense to the word flexitarian. Honestly, the labeling debates get so heated I just refer to myself as someone-who-tries-not-to-eat-much-meat. |

I post on vegetarian boards if what I have to say is pertinent. I would post, for example, my recipe for sweet potatoe chili (which is amazing and happens to be vegan) but obviously on the "what I had for lunch today" posts I wouldn't share if I had a hot dog. |

I don't call myself a "laid back vegetarian" but I think I eat similarly to what you have in mind. Basically, I don't buy meat at the store and I don't order it in restaurants. I do eat it if I go somewhere and there's not a reasonable option otherwise. So, this week I ate some chicken at a meeting where dinner was provided and the only veggie option was white rice (I had assumed there'd be a veggie option for the group or else I might have just eaten beforehand) and I know tonight I will be eating a buffalo burger since we are going to a friend's for dinner. In other catered situations, say a work event I went to this summer with hot dogs and burgers for lunch, I made a sandwich on a hamburger bun with the "fixins": cheese, lettuce, onions, and tomatoes. So, it's not that I eat meat at every event I go to, only if there's not really a good option otherwise. I could ask my friend tonight to make me a veggie burger, but since I'm not a vegetarian, I don't feel justified in asking other people to make special arrangements for me, if that makes sense. Am I a vegetarian? Absolutely not. Am I positively impacting my health, the environment, and the welfare of animals? I absolutely am. |

Yesterday: Breakfast - orowheat double fiber english muffin with brummel and brown spread Snack - carrots Lunch - carb-balance tortilla with reduced fat skippy chunky peanut butter (I'm not a carb counter, I just prefer the taste of these plus they have added fiber) Snack - jello sugar free dark chocolate pudding with about a dozen strawberries (omg so good!) Dinner - 1/3 of a cpk frozen thin crust margherita pizza, side salad with newman's own lighten up balsamic vinagrette Snack - white wine
That ended up being less than 1,100 calories, but I got to the end of the day and just wasn't hungry. Since I'd splurged on about 1,800 the day before and I'm going to a friend's house tonight for a barbecue, I figured it balances out. |

I did south beach a few years back, and after a few weeks I took a bit of a doughnut and did not like it. I had gotten so used to eating dense foods (meat, cheese, veggies, and whole grains) that even a piece of white bread tasted like cake to me, way too sweet and fluffy. |

Original Post by fidget84: I weigh myself every day, but I feel fine about it. I'm not waking the neighbors screaming or letting fluctuations "kill" me. I do it every day so if I happen to be bloated on a Monday, it doesn't throw off my perception of my progress. It's different for everyone. |

You really can't stress out about the day to day weights. I hopped on the scale this morning, and then, because I was curious, I got back on an hour later and I was down half a pound. I know I didn't burn an extra 1,700 calories for breakfast, so I'm not too worried. Just get back on your plan. Watch your calories and work out. |

I'm not suggesting that anyone eats the unpopped kernels. Here's an example from the box in my own cupboard: Serving Size 3 tablespoons (36g) unpopped Servings per container: About 5 1 cup popped: 30 calories
Nowhere does it say that 3 tablespoons will make 1 cup of popped corn, but most people would assume based on how it's presented on the box. |

| Foods | 100 calorie popcorn bags? But why... | Jul 18 2009 18:39 (UTC) |

Make sure you're looking at the popped amount and doing the math carefully. One cup of air popped pocorn, without any butter, oil, sugar, anything, is 30 calories. A normal size microwave bag (not 100 calories kind) will make about five cups, so 150 calories without any flavoring. Nutrition facts on microwave popcorn are notoriously confusing. I just pulled the box out of my pantry (safeway organic butter flavored) and it says a serving size is 3 tablespoons (36 g) unpopped and there are about 5 serving per container. It then lists calories, fat, etc for one cup popped, but nowhere does it say that the three tablespoons produces one cup of popped corn. It also lists calories for "Packaged" whatever that means. I'm guessing it's supposed to be for the whole bag, but I'm not sure I'm buying it. |

| Weight Loss | 5'8 ..........155 need to lose 15!!! Who's with me? | Jul 18 2009 18:20 (UTC) |

Same boat here. I'm 26, 5'8", and as of this morning I weigh 163 pounds. 150-155 is where I feel okay, 145 is where I feel super hot. :) I have been using Calorie Count for the past two weeks, and I have done the 30 day shred for the past 10 days, and I've lost one pound. I think the scale would have moved more if I wasn't doing so much exercising (I lose weight faster when I just cut calories, but I feel better when I exercise too) and, of course, I started my period yesterday, so all that combined makes one pound feel pretty sweet. |

A "better start" Thomas english muffin with a Morningstar fake sausage patty. (These are so good. I don't eat them as an alternative to sausage, I eat them because they're amazing.) 180 calories, 5 grams of fat, 27 grams of carbs, 9 grams of fiber, 16 grams of protein. Those high fiber english muffins keep you full. I had a sourdough one the other day with only one gram of fiber, and I was starving two hours later. On days when I'm feeling more ambitious, I add a fried egg to this sandwich, but I have a barbecue to go to tonight so I'm trying to keep the calories light until then. |

You know, there's virtue in eating vegetarian 90% of the time, or even half the time. Any time you cut out meat, you're making an impact on your health, the environment, and animal welfare. Personally, I try to avoid meat. I don't cook it at home, I don't order it in restaurants. The only times I have it are when someone else makes it for me. So, this week I had some chicken at a meeting where dinner was provided and there was no veggie option, and I'm going to have a burger tonight at a friend's barbecue. Anyways, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. I don't call myself a vegetarian (since clearly I'm not) but I'm happy with my diet. |

Make sure you read those labels carefully. The popped and unpopped numbers will be different, and a lot of times the number of servings per bag will be different so the math can be tricky. For a while I thought I had these bags of popcorn that were 100 calories in the whole bag, but I was doing the math wrong. |

| Vegetarian | Vegetarian chilli? | Jul 17 2009 20:18 (UTC) |

To make any of your chili more low calorie, just add more veggies. I always use black beans as a "base," but beans are denser and more caloric than veggies, so to "water it down" add chopped celery, bell peppers, anaheim pepper, onions, tomatoes, even finely copped broccoli and spinach. I also love diced sweet potato in my chili, and it's also ounce for ounce fewer calories than beans. |
