LW: 170 TW: 165.5
While it looks like a big drop, last week was an estimate based on my average (which is always a little higher than my current weight). I've really been enjoyed eating a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables from our local farmer's market and farms recently. This has made eating healthy a lot more fun. I've also started getting out running (for the first time in a long time - for a lot of different reasons I've been hesitant to start this back up). Up to now I've mostly focuesed on changing my diet and nutritional habits and generally being more active. Now I'm going to try to start adding running back into the mix. As motivation, my brother (who is a runner) has asked me to join him on a 5k run next month. So we'll see how that goes. In other good news, when I started this whole thing back in the end of December I weighed 195 pounds (my most ever) and set a goal of getting to 165 (last time I weighed that was over 6 years ago). While hopeful, I was somewhat skeptical that it would actually happen (as I've tried and failed many times in the past). However, as of this weigh-in I'm within .5 pound of my original goal and the target for this labor day challenge. I hope to be celebrating officially reaching that goal next week. My aim is to lose another 5 -1 pound across the next challenge or two before finding a good maintenance spot in the mid-150's that I can stick to long term. Thanks to everyone for all of the motivation and encouragement.

I will be on the run all day today, but wanted to at least get my weigh-in posted. I'm a restricted diet for a week related to food allergy treatments. In short it amounts to a liquid diet. As such, I think my weight was a little artificially low this morning. So I think my average weight (from the CC chart) is probably more accurate. Last week: 171 This week: 170 (estimated) Challenge so far: 1 pound. |

Hey guys. I completely spaced out on posting last week. I've also been wandering from the diet a bit too much recently and have been feeling it in energy levels. I kicked myself in the butt over the weekend and am getting back on track. Today I'm at 171 -- back to where I started this latest challenge at.

Greetings, all. Missed the check in last week due to illness. Feeling much better now.
This week: 172 Two weeks ago: 171
Too many hamburgers and hotdogs over the 4th of July weekend, I guess. I'm back on the wagon now for the next challenge, though. Looking forward to 165 pounds by Labor Day. |

I'm in. Have gone from 195 to 171 during AFC and J4C. The LDC being a shorter period, I'm aiming for a minimum of 6 pounds to get down to 165 by labor day. I'm hoping to get to 155-160 by the end of the year for permanent maintenance. |

Last week: 172.0 This week: 171.0 J4C Total: 9.0 Since AFC start: 24.0 I was hoping to get a full 10 pounds in the J4C. Just missed that by a pound. However, I was plateaued for a good month and a half at the beginning. I'm on a good pace now, though, averaging a pound a week. So I'm optomistic that I'll get there just a week or two late. I started the AFC hoping to loose 30 pounds. While it has gone a little slower than expected, the process has been good because now I have had a whole six months of practicing good eating habits. It's been tremendous just to see the impact on my health and energy just by losing weight and improving diet. As a fun sidenote, I have a nine month old daughter whose weight gains (she's almost 20 pounds now) have somewhat mirrored my weight loss. It's a great reminder that every time I pick her up and she seems heavier that I've lost that much weight -- in fact, that I used to have to carry that much extra weight around with me all the time!
Up to this point I've mostly been focusing on diet. During this next challenge I'm also going to start working on excersize and activity more. The runnings on this board have been inspiring... I'm going to try to work on some 5k's in anticipation of running one leg in a company marathon this fall. Even though the posts are a bit slow right now, thanks to all for the encouragement, information, and motivation on this board. It's been a big motivator on the days where it would be a lot easier to just go get fast food. It's been long enough that it is easy to start to drift away, but let's get remotivated for this labor day challenges so we can go into the fall healthy and lighter.

Another good week this week. I've had a couple long days/late nights are work so this week's number may be a bit artificially low, but I have managed to keep the diet healthy as well.
Last week: 173.5 This week: 172.0 (down 1.5) J4C to date: down 8.0 Since January: down 23.0 |

The salt thing is something that really caught me unawares for a while. At least for me, it seemed to make a big difference in water retention.
So I suspect if you start metering out the salt more that you'll see a significant change. And once your body gets used to it, it doesn't take as much salt for something to taste salty. |

Did a bit better this week:
last week: 174.5 this week: 173.5 J4C to date: 6.5 January to date: 21.5
I'm really hoping to get to 170 by the end of J4C, but things aren't moving quite as fast as I would hope. |

No change this week. Still hanging at 174.5. My waist measurement is down a bit, however, so I'm not too disappointed. This past week I've been experimenting with a diet that's mostly vegetables and fruits, with a lot less meat (I was already low on grains). Too soon to tell if it's making a difference, but I'm enjoying the produce! Definitely count me in for the labor day challenge - I'm going to need it. I lost 15 pounds for AFC, and will probably lose 8-10 for J4C. I'd like to drop another 10 at least. |

This week I hit 20 pounds lost since Jan 1 - a great feeling. I was starting to get a little frustrated with how slow things were going since April, but I appear to be loosing again. This 175 number may be a bit low as I think I'm a little dehydrated today, but should be able to solidify it for next week. |

Sorry for the late post - worked 20 hours yesterday. Fortunately, I seem to be loosing again (after plateauing, and then gaining last week).
Last week: 178.0 This week: 176.5 Week total: -1.5 Total J4C challenge: -3.5
Alex- the first 3-4 weeks were similar for me. Enjoy it while you can as things will slow down eventually. As for pasta - I hear you there. Your idea is good - find ways to make it a hassle to eat more like cooking smaller portions so you have to wait for a second batch to cook. Sometime I'll drink a large glass of water (or something high in fiber) 20-30 minutes before so I won't feel as hungry once the meal is served. Also, use smaller plates or bowls - sounds silly, but it doesn't take as much food to "fill" a plate so it psychologically feels like a bigger serving. It also forces you to pause to serve yourself another round, making it more obvious how much you're eating.
But it does take time to form new habits. I found for a long while (and still occasionally now, if I'm not paying attention) that I would continue to eat past the point where I was no longer hungry just because that's how much I usually ate - and it hadn't felt like I'd chewed enough yet. So being very deliberate in portion size for a while allows you to retrain your body on how "big" a proper meal is.

The standstill continues. I'm actually up .5 pound this week to 178. I've essentially been bouncing around between 177.5 and 180 since the start of J4C. That's after loosing 15 pounds during AFC. The bizarre thing is that even though my weight's up a bit this week, my waist/stomach measurements (which I also take each Wed.) are down 1/2 an inch. Since I'm focusing mostly on diet and not doing a lot of heavy workouts, I find it hard to believe that I've added enough weight in muscle mass to offset 1/2 inch of fat in weight. Anyone else experience anything like this?
Last week 177.5 This week 178 |

It seems to be slow going now. I lost 15 in 3 months of AFC. I've now lost only 2.5 in over a month of the J4C. Been working hard on diet these last weeks and even got out biking and walking with my daughter. All that for half a pound this week - a little frustrating. Anyway... AFC Start: 195 J4C start: 180 Last week: 178 This week: 177.5
I was hoping to hit 170 by memorial day, but that's looking less realistic now. |

Hey guys - I'm back from a great two weeks in Guatemala. Ate pretty well - a lot of fresh fruits and homemade food - not nearly as much processed food down there. Tended to be carb-heavier than I usually eat, though. The goods news is that I didn't gain anything (a big worry), but didn't lose much either. We'll call it consolidating gains. I'm looking forward to getting back on the normal diet and getting some exercise going on now that the weather is getting better in Ohio.
AFC Start: 180 3 weeks ago: 178.5 Today: 178 AFC so far: 2 pounds

Greetings. Thanks to all for the encouragement, and congratulations to all on the progress in AFC.
J4C Start: 180 Today: 178.5 J4C Lost: 1.5 Lost Since AFC beginning: 16.5 J4C Goal: 160-165 (15-20 pounds lost)
Off to a great start for J4C. I have to say, it's really nice to be seeing numbers beginning 17_ rather than 18_ or 19_. I'll be heading out of country to see family for the next two weeks. I won't have internet access, so I won't be able to check in, but will by trying to watch the food and exercise. They haven't seen me in about 3.5 months, so I'll be curious to see if they notice any difference. I'll check back in in two weeks.

Hey all,
I've been stuck at 180 all week since the last weigh in. Beats going up, I suppose. So...
AFC Start: 195 Last: 180 AFC End (J4C Start) : 180 Total AFC loss = 15 pounds ---> halfway to goal.
So my goal is at least 15 pounds for J4C. |

Good morning, gentlemen.
I'm happy to say I'm back on food for a week, after the juice fast I was on (for allergies, mentioned previously). I'd shown a lot of "weight loss" during that time -- starting at 189 and losing 11 pounds over 13 days. I knew a fair share of that would show back up, but didn't know how much I would have truly lost over that time period.
At the end of the fast last Wed. I was down to 177.5. After ramping back up to food over the past week I did a quick bounce as high as 183, and settle in today at 179.5. So it looks like over the last three weeks I lost a total of 9.5 pounds - not bad.
Today - 179.5 Last Week - 177.5 AFC Start - 195 Total AFC so far -15.5
So I'm now officially over half way. I'd love to end up down 20 (weight 175) by April 1, but not sure if that's going to happen. I'll get as close as I can. I'm definitely in for the J4C to finish out the 30-35 total I want to lose. |

Greetings, all. I'm checking in early today as I'll be out the next several days at a tradeshow. I'm just coming off my juice fast (for allergies) that I mentioned last week, so my weight loss will seem a bit high, but we'll see how much of that comes back in the next week as I begin eating again.
Today: 177.5 Last Week: 182.5 AFC Start: 195 AFC lost so far: 17.5
I'm hoping to make it to a solid 20+ lost by the end of AFC. Then take off a final 10-15 for the J4C. |

Well, I'm back. Sorry to miss the check-in last week. Combo of end of being sick and and crazy work. But I'm pretty well back on track now.
This week: 182.5 2 weeks ago: 188.5 Down 12.5 since start of AFC
This week's drop will look a little extreme because once a year I do a modified juice fast for 10+ days due to a number of food allergies (allergic to over 27 foods to one degree or another). It's nearly impossible for me to eat cleanly all the time, so this yearly fast helps clean out my system. During this time I tend to get a lot of apparent weight loss due to the reduced food intake, increased liquids, and lost water weight. I don't use it as a weight loss technique, but it just happened to fall during the timeframe of the AFC. By the way, I'm very glad to hear about the AFC extending into the J4C. I know having the accountability has really helped me, so it will be good to continue to have a group to check in with. And it's going to take me past April 1 to get to my target 30-35 pounds lost. |

Down a measly .5 pounds this week. I was really hoping to break 185 (my 10 pound lost mark). Bizarrely, I was probably better about diet this weekend than most weekends. Last week: 186 Here's hoping next week is more exciting.

Last week - 185.5 This week - 186 AFC start 195 1.5 lost this week AFC total - 9 pounds
All -in-all not a bad week, I was hoping for the magic 195 which would be a full 10 pounds down in the first month, but I'll take 9! After a big week or two at the beginning, I seem to be averaging 1.5 a week, so that would put me down 21 by April 1. However, I suspect I'm coming up on the difficult part. In the past when I've lost weight, I've usually plateaued somewhere between 180 and 195. So I'll be very relieved when I first hit the 170's. pinksalmon - call me dens, but can you explain how you recommend doing the cycle for the pushup/squat/situp challenge? Are you cycling through each of the 3 for 33 reps, or are you doing 33 pushups, then 33 situps, etc.? |

ez-wider, Sorry to hear about the work problems - that's never fun. Your reaction has tended to be my problem in that past when thinks got stressful. I wouldn't say I was trying to eat things to death, but in the grander scheme of things when it all came unhinged, watching calories seemed to be the least of my problems. I'd encourage you to hang in there. I've had to find during the AFC challenge that if I'm ticked about something that I just "salad" it out. It sounds silly, but crunching through a mountain of salad fixings is oddly gratifying. And I can can eat them until I'm blue (or green!) in the face without having any real impact on the diet. Just keep from tossing too much dressing or cheese on things.
I should note that I've never been a salad enthusiats in the past. But they're growing on me. |

Well - feeling better about this week than last week.
Today: 187.5 I'm looking forward to hitting the 10 pound mark, hopefully next week. It'll be nice to hit double digits.
Pinksalmon - you mentioned measuring your water%, fat%, etc. How are you doing that? Is it with one of those higher-end scales? What do you recommend? |

Still, I guess that averages about 2.6 pounds per week, so not too bad. |

Question for anyone who knows... I noticed on the chart from Wednesday that for some guys it showed not just weight loss but broken down into fat loss, etc. How are you figuring that out? Also, any tips on getting a consistent waist/spare tire measurement each week? I'm finding this can be quite variable. |

Hi guys, haven't been around much the last week to post. However, started at 195 on Dec. 30 and weighed in at 190 today. (I highly doubt that's all fat, but at least the numbers are headed in the right direction). Haven't really been ramping the activity up yet, but have been working on getting the diet dialed in first. I've been aiming for a "zone-ish" ratio of fat/protein/carbs and a minimum of 30 grams of dietary fiber a day. Also have stopped "liquid calories" (i.e. no calories in drinks). Currently averaging around 1600 calories a day. More later... |

So you can log your weight -- which allows you to do the following:
- Plot your weight curve
- Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
- Determine the projected target date (see under Overall in the figure above)
