Working your "core" - upper thighs, abs, lower & mid back - will help shape your still ample buttocks and hips by providing a stronger frame to hang the weight on that, in effect, re-proportions your figure. You stand up taller and straighter. This helps with the dreaded middle muffin top. You also exercise your bigger muscle groups which helps with metabolism.

It was a dark and stormy night.....

Hold that thought! The 3x/week gym time is working with my RL workout buddies. Very motivating even when it is freezing out, I still go becuase they are expecting me. I didn't weigh in last week because of travel and the normal monthly weight gain. I expect to see a decrease from 2 weeks ago when I weigh in this Friday.

I'm happy to see everyone and that people are still working towards our goals! Well done, folks!

This week: 240.0

The really good news is that I have reconnected with my old workout buddies from the gym and we have committed to going to the gym 3x/week for the next 6 weeks!!!!  Accountability is a wonderful thing. Now, I'll have to hike my bod to the gym as I have a regular date and I can't disappoint them.

The Lounge Grocery Shopping Anxeity... Feb 22 2008

Testify, sister!

My 30 minute shopping trip turned into a 2 hour nightmare when I first switched. Now that I am a smart shopper, with a menu plan and list, it only takes me about 45 minutes.  It's easier to bypass the bakery when you can tell yourself firmly that those cupcakes are NOT on the menu plan or grocery list so they'll just have to stay on the shelf.

As iheartsin said, when you stay to the outer walls of the store, there's not as much reading. Plus you will know which processed foods (bagged, frozen, boxed or canned) you wish and you will nip in and out of the aisles.

My favorite meal right now is a homemade chicken soup.

1 can chicken broth
1 cup slice carrots
1 small onion diced
1 cup chopped celery
garlic to taste
thyme (or other herb seasoning)

Saute all vegetables. Add broth and thyme. Simmer for 20 minutes until soft. Salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy.

You can add one small potato if you like starch or ladle over whole wheat dumplings. You can add a bit of steamed kale as well.

Yes, I think so.  YOu just have to be aware that there will be lots of ups and downs and not get depressed by the 'ups'.

Ditto. The hard thing is not to obsess/depress over your NORMAL weight fluctuations.

I suggest a different method of weighing rather than daily or weekly exclusively.

Weigh yourself every day at the same time. Morning is better after elimination, before you shower or eat. Do this without emotions! Record your weight every day. After 7 days, average the weights together. Record that number. Use the weekly average weight to measure your progress. No matter what the daily weights say as they bounce up and down, the weekly weight trend will show you a gradual, true weight loss. Keep it up and you will see a difference.

Why do it this way? Two reasons.

1) Scales normally have a +/- 3 pound range...so you can weigh yourself multiple times and potentially see a 6 pound swing!! Weighing daily and averaging weekly will take into account the variability of the scale.

2) Your body fluctuates in weight daily depending on water content, metabolism, exercise, food intake, elimination, etc. Weekly averages will take this into account.

So, after a few weeks, what you should see is a gradual weight decrease (hopefully!!) even if you are fluctuating up/down on a daily basis.

Foods Salsa Question Feb 21 2008

Hmm. I would guess because it is cooked/processed and loses much of its nutrition.

Why not make your own fresh salsa?

1 bunch cilantro
1 medium tomato
1 medium onion
1-2 jalepenos
1/2 lime

Chop all ingredients and mix in bowl. Add juice of 1/2 lime. Allow to meld. Enjoy!

If you prefer a "sauce," use a food processor to blend everything to the consistency of your choice.

Weight Loss Switching to water from diet sodas Feb 19 2008

Original Post by sugar_and_spice:

I pretty much only drink diet soda. How do I get un-addicted? I drink at least 4-5 a day and need one in the mornings to wake up. It also keeps me from eating to just have a diet coke and fill up, know what I mean?

If it will help my weight loss I may quit... Its just really hard. Any advice?

You have a double whammy of caffeine and sweetener. Depending on your tolerance, you may just start cutting down on the diet soda. You can substitute with water or maybe club soda with a lemon/lime/orange slice in it. Keep in mind you'll probably experience a "health crisis" (feel like the flu) when your body starts crying for more caffeine or sweetener. Other techniques are to always drink a glass of water before every meal - and perhaps every time you want a soda. If you really think you need caffeine, then substitute with some herbal teas. Many of the fruit teas have some natural sweet taste so you shouldn't need to add sweetener.

I managed to break the cycle of soda and now only consume water, herbal teas, fresh vegetable juices, and the occasional fresh fruit juice.

Good luck!

I'm "allergic" to fabric softener. It makes me itch. If I sleep on sheets, it makes my eyes itch and my nose run. I use fragrance free detergent - usually the arm & hammer brand.

Wondering if thats average because I will do Krogers specials....

On sale, I can usually get Kashi at $2.50 a box. Other cereals like raisin (hi)bran or the cascadian organic cereals I can get for $2.00. My grocery chain store of choice is Cubs or Krogers.

Does it work to do a partial raw food diet?  Or does your body start to rebel against cooked foods?  I have felt for a few years that my body would prefer a raw food diet, but I am not ready to make that plunge.

I suppose it depends on your definition of "work"?

I'm not 100% live food although I do make an effort. I eat locally. I juice high nutrient veggies. You can certainly add a fresh salad to every meal or start drinking fresh juice or cut down on packaged, processed foods.  I don't see how you can go wrong by adding raw, whole foods - especially veggies - into your diet.

Last week: 241

This week: 239.5

I didn't make my weekly challenge of getting to the gym 3x. I was just too frazzled. I keep thinking that I could really accelerate my weight loss if I could incorporate some exercise. I got my power juicer back out this weekend in order to make some high potency green drinks. Yesterday, I drank red/green kale and lemon juice (diluted with water) and carrot/apple/lemon/ginger juice. I am not using juicing to replace eating my raw veggies - just using it as a way to increase my veggie servings. I save the pulp and use it in soups, salads, or muffiins.

So my goal this week is to drink a green juice in the morning and get to the gym at least 3x this week!

Mmm, I'm a big proponent of the "live food" nutrition plan. Eating "raw" takes some getting used to but you can ease into it and decide how far to take it in your own life.

Foods pasta, potatoes, bread-where do they fit in a 1400 calorie diet, I'm starving without them! Feb 11 2008

Original Post by ckimber_67:

The title of this post says it all. I see people suggest whole wheat pasta and multi grain bread but how can I fit a 100 calorie slice of bread into a 1400 calorie diet? Whole wheat pasta is 360 calories for 1/2 cup!! Who eats 1/2 cup of pasta? If that's all I can have for dinner with some tomato sauce and a green salad and maybe some fruit for dessert then I am going to be one hungry girl! But then again, if I don't have either bread, potatoes or pasta I starve! What do you guys do about this?

CK, I am lo-carbing it as well. The one thing that really helps me get over the carb crave is adding more lean protein into my diet. It really helps with the hungries and lasts longer than with carbs. If you feel you must eat carbs - substitute the "bad" carbs with carb foods that have high fiber. The fiber will help moderate the absorption.

The other thing I recall is that sometimes the combination of food (protein, fat, carb) is just as important to satiety as the total calorie count. I'll try to find a reference about this.

I have two techniques that help me when out drinking with friends:

1) I order dark beer or a microbrew. I find it has more flavor. I sip and savor to extend the experience. I don't gulp or guzzle the "good stuff."

2) I order a bottle of beer rather than a draft pint or schooner (20+oz) and a small glass. Pour & sip works well for me to slow down my consumption.

Oh, I guess the third and fourth technique have already been mentioned by others: drink a glass of water in between every drink and eat healthy before going out to curb the cravings for and temptiations of bar food.

Motivation Discipline Feb 10 2008

Great advice from Bagga! Breathe, center, refocus!

I get the feeling from your post, redhawk, that you feel like you lack motivation. It seems that your activities aren't giving you satisfaction. One possible thing you could do is to set one simple goal like "I will go to the gym once this week". The human brain is hardwired to release the feel-good hormones when you accomplish something. After this positive reinforcement, you will be more likely to repeat the behavior. So, your next goal would be, "go to the gym 2x/week" and etc  until you reach that big goal of the routine you would like to be doing on a regular basis. Small steps pave the way for great changes.

Foods to much sugar? Feb 09 2008

Original Post by sunkissedbliss:

Ehh whatever. Most people are all "a calorie is a calorie" here but I guess you don't follow that way of thinking because if you did whether you ate good sugar or bad sugar wouldn't make a difference.

In most cases, it is a calorie count. However, depending on your metabolism, some people are "sensitive" to allergens (like gluten) or carbohydrates, etc. For example, some folks may lose weight eating 1500 calories composed of 75% carbohydrate. Some, who are sensitive to carbohydrates, will not lose but may actually gain. They would lose weight if they ate 1500 calories with only 25% carbohydrate. It'd be nice if there was one rule for all, but sadly this is not the case.

Fruits are filled with natural sugar.

So? Sugar is sugar. Can the body even tell the difference between natural sugar and processed sugar? I didn't think so. And also, fruit nowdays is modified to be bigger and sweeter than it occurred naturally in the past so it's not that much better in terms of sugar than processed stuff anyway. That being said, I love my fruit.

Actually, fructose in fruit is combined with fiber which reduces its impact on the body. "Sugar" added to foods is normally high fructose corn syrup (fructose + glucose) or sucrose which acts differently in the body - like being absorbed more readily, different effect on blood glucose, etc.  So, yes, there is a difference in what type of "sugar" you consume.

Ditto here. I typically go up 3 lbs before period and down 3-4 pounds afterwards. I never sweat about the up/down on the scale in the short term - my long term trend (over 6 weeks now) shows consistent weight loss of about 1.25 lbs/week.

i know that one way i was able to cut my calories was by eating much more protein and less carbs because if i eat carbs i'm hungry again very quickly and if i eat protein i'm full much longer
I, too, find that protein helps satiety.  I cut carbs (simple, refined) and have to add in lean protein in order to not experience the hunger.

Weight Loss BEER Feb 03 2008
03:25 (UTC)
A few drinks with your friends won't sabotage your diet unless you overinduldge or lose control of your eating.  I tend to drink light beer like it was water so when I go out with friends, I choose a flavorful dark beer. It has a lot of mouth-feel so I get a good sensation from it. It's also heavy, so I tend to sip instead of gulp. However, dark beer does have a lot more calories (like 200/pint) so I have to budget wisely.

Oh, another trick is to order a bottle and small glass. I tend to slow down a bit when I'm pouring and sipping rather than drawing from a pint or long-neck.
