Foods Source for high protein, low fat? Jan 05 2008
17:48 (UTC)

Thanks for the ideas. Chicken and hard-boiled eggs didn't even occur to me, and I can eat both without condiments, etc. I'll look into the veg. option, too. I always thought those were higher in fat, so this is great news.

I'm having trouble searching forums for specific content... looking for high protein, low fat delivered a ridiculous number of matches, most of which had nothing to do with my question. Glad to know my question is a common one, though!

Sounds amazing. I love chicken or turkey with fruit - it's so physically and emotionally satisfying! Never thought of using apple butter, but apple butter with cream cheese and onion is strange and yet yummy, so I could see all those things going together very well in your sandwich. Thanks for sharing!

Here's one of my all-time favorites poultry/fruit combos:

carved white meat turkey (skinless), tart cherry all-fruit (or mash bings with a little hot water), FF cream cheese, sunflower seeds, sweet onion, green lettuce.

Last night was brutal. I was totally craving junk from dinner until bed. I'd like to say I overcame the challenge but I was a marshmellow and had some junk.  Baby steps...baby steps.  LOL

Junk from dinner? Like, leftovers? Um, why are you serving junk for dinner? :)

CW: 166 lbs
GW for Feb 3: 162 lbs
GW for March 3: 158 lbs

I'm also challenging myself to get on the treadmill for 30-45 minutes, six days a week. Not totally sure how the forum challenges work, but...

Hooray for reasonable, yet intimidating, goals!

I think it's the diet coke that is slowly killing me. I read some where that the aspartame messes with your body and your emotions but do I stop drinking it? NOPE! I'm even thinking of going to get one right now!  Not drinking it any more is one of my resolutions but I can't be expected to leave those last two precious cans in the fridge! They'll be lonely! They only have one purpose on this planet and I fully intend to see they live out their dreams! One of us has to! I think it's a good compromise to drink the last two diet cokes and not inhale the last 75 hershey kisses.  Darn you HERSHEY MAN!!

I remember that, to help me cut down on smoking (way back when), I bought gross, menthol cigarettes that I never would have smoked usually. They were so gross that I just couldn't stomach it as much. Instant cut-back.

So, what if you bought totally generic, icky diet cola and drank it warm? And if you usually drink it straight from the can, pour it into a glass. Or vice versa. Don't use a straw if you usually do, and vice versa. Etc. You'll still get the caffeine - you just won't LOVE it.

Then, once you slow your habit down, switch to D.Coke w/Splenda and force yourself to stick to a set daily schedule & ration? If you know you'll get your next one in just a few hours, you might not feel so obsessed about your next one!

Again, this advice was all inspired by my nicotine addiction solution. This strategy really worked for me when I needed to slow down a runaway habit!

+++++

Attagirl for the treadmill hour. I did 45 minutes of walking today on my treadmill for the first time in... at least a year. I think my sudden weight gain this summer has given me a very big kick in the derriere regarding my slowing metabolism. Can't expect to be a healthy thirtysomething without making some daily changes.

XO

I might not motivate you, but I might make you laugh!

You totally just made me laugh. Especially, from your profile, that it's okay with you if you happen to look hot during the process of getting healthier. Awesome attitude!

Nice to meet you! We share a few addictions there, including caffeine and the part about being super supportive of other people's real problems. I never even told most of my friends about the prednisolone causing my weight gain. It just sounded so whiney in my head.

I eat mindlessly for energy. Would love to get the exercise thing in motion, since it enhances energy. But it's a vicious circle, isn't it? Gotta have energy to exercise, gotta exercise to have energy. Ack!

Added you to my buddy list. Good luck!

It's just as easy to get obsessed with putting food in as it is to get obsessed with keeping food out. Either way, it's a psychological and behavioral compulsion. And either way, it's gotta be hell.

I'm concerned because I saw one comment here from a young, underweight member with a stated problems with ED, feeling sorry for the subjects of the show because they were unable to control binging. When she hears us say, "gross," does that reinforce her feeling that gaining four pounds over the holiday means that her weight has "skyrocketed?"

Moreover...

Do we need to be careful what we say around 14-year-olds with eating disorders on this site? I think it's a fair question, since they are watching and participating in discussions had by adults who can have a sense of humor about food/weight/diets without exhibiting extreme behavior. If I joke, "I think all this holiday driving has made my right thigh thinner than my left," is that irresponsible to say around a child with BDD?

I'm new to the site, so please let me know if there is some kind of special message board culture in effect here. I understand that anyone can make up an identity and log on, and that there's no fool-proof way to deal with online problems... but addressing the particpation of a young girl with stated, obvious ED/BDD issues seems like a no brainer.

Moderators? Anyone?

New girl, similar boat: 33 with 31 lbs to go. Trip to Mexico coming up too fast for me to worry about it, but I am going to buy a modest bikini in my current size - no sense hiding when I'm in a different country. My white, dimply skin needs sun!

My end-point is in August, according to this site. Seems like a million years from now. Where's the all-American quick fix? :-)

I like the trip-as-reward idea. Do y'all have any other good self-reward ideas? Looking for something unique.

Happy new year!

I also just started yesterday and am looking for a few friends/motivators as well.  Like bluemag1, i found the website in Women's Health.

Bluemag1 - you and I seem to have similar body measurements and in our early 30's.  Hopefully we can help motivate each other!

Sounds good! And I'm sorry for your loss. So young!

Heart disease runs in my family, too. My father passed away too young - and he was fit and muscular his whole life! Being at a healthy weight should tip the odds a bit more in our favor. And being around for our children - and keeping up with our children! - is a great motivator during optimistic moments. :)

Wishing you a good year ahead. I added you to my friends list -- be sure to fill out the profile there so that you won't be a stranger!

Hi!

I too am a mom of young ones.  I am 30 and looking to lose 24 more pounds.  I am 5'5" and 160.5 now.  I gained two pounds over the holidays, but I am back at it.  I will add you as a friend.

Happy New Year!

What a thoughtful profile you have! I enjoyed browsing your interest list - we have some funny little things in common, i.e., professional musician in the family. Ditto on add-friend thing. Looking forward to reading your posts, etc. Happy New Year back to you!

I'm new too... and I just added someone to my friends list because her posts are interesting to me. Suddenly, I felt weird - like, what if it's rude to add a friend without actually making friends first? Too late now! I'm sure we'll all figure out the proper way to do things. In the meantime, no big whoop.
Motivation Anyone else 5'8? What's your goal weight? Jan 02 2008

135-140 goal, just under 5'8". I clocked in at 130 through my 20s. Medium-small frame, no noteworthy muscles! Now mid-30s and 166.

I was holding steady at 145 after my pregnancy (five years ago), but a summer illness required prednisolone and I gained about 20 lbs in two months.

Weight Loss Ekk! Help please! Didnt eat all day!! Jan 02 2008

On a very empty stomach, especially if I have a tummy ache, I always revert to the BRAT diet - bananas, rice, applesauce, toast - until eating normally sounds like a good idea. Something to try next time, maybe.

Foods Is there any way to make cottage cheese edible? Jan 02 2008

Oh yes - with peaches! Anyone else grow up in the 70s with canned, halved peaches filled with cottage cheese? Total childhood comfort food...

Now I'm wondering whether I could bake roast fresh peach halves with a little cinnamon and fill with cottage cheese. A grownup version!

Foods What Kind of milk do you drink Jan 01 2008
06:41 (UTC)

good question for me... i've always gotten skim or 1% from our local dairy farm, but my mom got me the "blood type diet" book and some other related book, and both say that as a type O with my kind of genetic history, etc., I should be drinking very small amounts of whole milk - and otherwise avoiding milk. I need to check with a living, breathing dietician about that...

should anyone over the age of 5 drink whole milk? : )
