Young Calorie Counters How do all you teens deal with overeating??? Nov 15 2009
23:54 (UTC)

I've dealt a lot with binge eating in my life. First of all... You're under 18, so you should definitely not be eating 1,750 to maintain... You probably burn 2,000 to maintain, so the lowest amount of calories you should eat per day is 1,500 if you're trying to lose. If you eat lower than that, you will destroy your metabolism so that when you begin to eat regularly again you will gain the weight back immediately. On a day when you binge, the worst thing you can do to yourself is restrict the next day. That's what I had problems with before... I would think I could only eat a tiny bit the next day so that I wouldn't feel bad about the previous day... That just led to an awful binge/starve/binge/starve cycle. You should eat normally. If you aren't hungry, don't eat! But if you are, you're young enough, and at a perfectly healthy weight where you really should not be super-focused on eating because it can honestly destroy a lot of fun and relationships in your life... Good luck :) Message me if you're having a rough day/feel like bingeing. I understand what you're going through. Keep your chin up!

This will make all of you feel better about yourselves... My mom came to visit me at college and she brough a pumpkin pie (my weakness around Thanksgiving) and told me I should share it with the girls in my dorm. I ended up watching NipTuck and eating the entire thing and throwing away the packaging and telling my mom I shared it when she asked where it was. HAHAHA I'm awful!!!!

I'm the same way. If I eat breakfast all I can think about all day is food and I end up eating a ridiculous amount of it. If I wait until around 10 I'll have something small and then have a big lunch and a smaller dinner, which keeps me in my calorie limits. I love breakfast, though, so it's annoying to feel like I can't eat it without wanting to eat everything in sight during the day!

Oh my gosh, I've been wanting to talk about this for a while. I've been with this guy recently who loves to eat meat, and I've been a vegetarian for a few years. I'm totally fine with him eating meat, I can't judge another person BUT when we eat a meal and he has a steak or burger or something and afterwards he wants to kiss me I cringe and I still can't find the balls to tell him why I never want to make out after he's chowed down a bloody burger. EWWW!!!!

I can totally relate! I've been really inconsistent with CC, so I'll log one or two foods per day and if I end up bingeing I just won't log any of it, and I'll deny the fact that I binged all day. My excuse has been "Oh, it's winter... sweatpants always fit!" or "I'll get around to it in the Spring"... yeah right. I need to get my butt back in shape because I've already gained 7 pounds in college and it's been two months! Ahh! I'm at 130 and was hoping to be down to 110 by x-mas but it looks like that's not going to happen, so I'm focusing on controlling my urges to binge, and eating foods like Amy's soups (Mmm!!!) lots of coffee/tea, and working more veggies into my diet. Also, I've not been working out at all... it's so much easier to curl up in sweats in my bed with some pumpkin pie and do homework. Ugh, I wish this was easier but we'll motivate each other! :)

Haha thanks! Saying it like that makes it sound so easy but actually being at a party and avoiding it is SO hard for me! I've noticed that when I binge it's almost always mindless... It's more of a "HELL YEAH let's run to the grocery store and buy a ton of ice cream and chocolate!!!" and then I gorge myself and it's only until I've already done the damage that I realize it did more harm than good and that I feel miserable. I'm not the type to weigh pros and cons before eating.. more like an EAT NOW CRY LATER type ;)

I think one of my big issues is that my fiends and family are very nosey and make annoying comments if I'm looking at the calories on something, etc. so it's hard to figure out how many calories I've eaten in a day because any sign of me watching my calories is a HUGE deal to them. Also, I've been around a lot of beer and chips, etc. this summer and that is really not helping my case. I just want to feel great about myself when I go off to college in August so I can meet people and be who I am without being all self-conscious.

Hey! The exact same thing happened to me :( Beer and graduation cake are what I blame it on ;) I'm 18 as well, going to school next year and I want to feel confident when I meet lots of new faces and most importantly I want to feel fun and fit this summer so I can go out and enjoy it as much as possible. I'm currently 128 pounds and 5'3". I was down to 119 in the winter/early spring and felt awesome but put on the weight as I started getting into party mode. I want to be 110 when I start school August 29th so I've got 18 pounds to lose 10.5 weeks... So if I do my math right I need to lose 1.5 to 2 pounds each week. LET'S DO IT!

I'm so in! Probably going to aim for 8 pounds (2 per week) this month because 10 is a lot for me. I'm 18, 5'3" and currently 127 pounds. If I'm 119 (or in the teens at all) by July I will be SO HAPPY! I need motivation BADLY. I just ate about half of my graduation cake and didn't count it because nobody saw me... haha oh boy I have a challenge ahead of me. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!

Hey ladies! I've been gone for 10 weeks and haven't used my computer at all so I'm back and ready to lose! I'm up to 125 again and want to lose 15-20 pounds this summer (August 29th is my goal date: first day of school!). Any tips for summer weight loss?? I feel like my life revolves around food in the summer (cookouts, icecream, coffee, etc. etc. etc.) How are all of you doing?? It's good to be back! Smile

This morning I weighed in at 126. I'm forcing myself to stay positive but I feel like curling over and giving up. 16 pounds to go until my 110 goal... (I'm still planning on 105 eventually but 110 is much more reasonable right now). Ugh, I hate that I was so close before... I was less than 10 pounds to go!!! This is driving me crazy... I'm going to try really hard to get to the gym a bunch this week and eating simple, healthy food. Thanks for the support, ladies... it means a lot Smile

veggie_love, what are you upping your cals to? Has your exercise increased?

Hey! I'm upping my cals to 1,600-1,800 because I was at 1,200 for a year (I lost 20 pounds total in the year) and all of a sudden couldn't budge the scale and when I asked why I found out my body was in starvation mode from eating too little.. I thought 1,200 was a fine amount for my age but found out it's only for 21's and up! Yikes!! So I've been working on upping my cals.. It's been really hard though because I'm not hungry but I know I have to do it to help my metabolism. Ugh. It's been a struggle just eating 1,500 (I have no idea how I'm going to make it to 1,800!) I know I won't lose a pound a week (I might not even lost at all!) this way but that's okay with me as long as I'm not hurting my body. Smile

P.S. 2nluv: Thanks girl! I have WAY too much time on my hands Tongue out

hey everyone!! just another 5'3" girl joining the force Smile

This morning I weighed in at 120lbs.. I've gained a little this week because I've been in the process of upping my cals. Looking to get down to 105 eventually.. I'm hoping for graduation/summer!!! But 110 sounds just fine to me right now because I'm trying to stay as healthy physically and mentally as I can.

Oh, and I'm 18! It's good to be with fellow shorties! Cool

5'3"

120lbs

18 years

Ultimate goal: 105lbs for summer (this year I'm trying to get EXCITED about being in a bikini rather than let bathing suits control my summer activities)

I'm not doing so great right now... I've been sick this week so mostly sitting in bed... unfortunately my stomach is not affected so I'm eating more than normal and hardly moving... I've gained a couple pounds this week.. I was hoping to not see 120 again but here it is... yuck.. well 15 pounds to go...

lets stick together and keep this group going strong!!! (even if you're 5'8" Tongue out )

Hey hun! Really, listen to what people are saying.. IT WORKS. I was eating 1200, too. I found myself tired a lot of the time.. and not as willing to go exercise.. Then I was told to bump up my calories to 1500 and I feel a TON better. Some say they gain a couple pounds at first and then the weight starts dropping but for me the weight dropped from the beginning of my increase. I was terrified to listen to people who said to up my calories because I thought I'd instantly gain a bunch of weight which I had worked my ass off to lose. But they were right, and I'm glad I listened because who knows the damage I was doing to my metabolism!!

Good lucK!!!

I have a long-term goal of 20 pounds, which would make me 106 pounds. Then I'd be done, maintain, and see how I felt (if I needed to gain a little or what). That's my summer '09 goal. So end of May. As of my current goal, I'm looking to make it to 110 by mid-March. 16 pounds! About 65 days... 9ish weeks...Think I can do it?!

good luck everyone! stay motivated!!! being happy when you look in the mirror is a whole lot better than a piece of cake is gonna make you Smile

May I join?? I just saw the forum and I could definitely use some motivation trying to lose the last five pounds. I'm currently 5'3", 18 years old, and 125 pounds. My goal is 120 by Christmas day. It's definitely possible, it's just a matter of staying strong because it's easy to get comfortable when you are so close and the worst would be to not make it once you get so close. I do eventually want to get down to 110 lbs. but not by any date really... just eventually.

Weight Loss Calorie Intake Suggestions Nov 15 2008

Hey! I'm 18, Female, 5'3" and I weigh 125 pounds. On days where I don't do ANYTHING I eat 1,200 (to lose one pound a week) and then on days when I work out, I figure the amount of calories burned into it. (i.e. if I burn 500 calories on the eliptical I eat 1,700 calories that day) So if each day you're burning 400-500 calories at the gym I would eat at least 1,800 calories/day (and that's only if you don't move around much at all during the day other than your gym time). 1,200 is way too low of a goal. You said you didn't feel that your gym efforts were paying off... I'm sure they will. It takes time for your body to build up muscle and the added weight is probably your body replacing fat with muscle. How do your clothes fit? That's the better test. Smile Hope I helped!

What would you prefer people say?  'Oh my goodness you look so fat and ugly!'?   For heaven's sake, they're just trying to say something nice.  Lighten up.

Haha NO! That would be so mean! But it's when they say it with the undertone of being annoyed that you look good when it bugs me. For example this girl (I would kill for her body) was looking me up and down one day and goes "Wow, you look really skinny this year. Did you lose like 50 pounds this summer?" I lost 3. haha I couldn't tell if she was trying to be nice or making some secretly mean fat joke! Tongue out

Health & Support How much? Oct 19 2008

I've found this to be pretty helpful:

To estimate how many calories you should consume in order to maintain your weight, you'll need to do a little math. By using a simple formula called the Harris-Benedict principle, you can assess your basal metabolic rate -- also known as your BMR.

Calculate Your BMR

Your BMR is the amount of energy your body needs to function. We use about 60% of the calories we consume each day for basic bodily functions such as breathing.

Other factors that influence your BMR are height, weight, age and sex.

Step one is to calculate your BMR with the following formula:

Women:
655 + (4.3 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)

Calculate Activity

Step two: In order to incorporate activity into your daily caloric needs, do the following calculation:

  • If you are sedentary : BMR x 20 percent
  •

  • If you are lightly active: BMR x 30 percent
  •

  • If you are moderately active (You exercise most days a week.): BMR x 40 percent

  • If you are very active (You exercise intensely on a daily basis or for prolonged periods.): BMR x 50 percent
  •

  • If you are extra active (You do hard labor or are in athletic training.): BMR x 60 percent
  •

Add this number to your BMR.

The result of this formula will be the number of calories you can eat every day and maintain your current weight.

Hope that helped!!
