Hi! Check out the website for Runners World. They have some great beginner programs. They start you off by walking for the first 8 days, thn move you right on up, nice and easy. Also Cool Runnings has something too (or at least they used to).

I think RW wil also have info on your shoes, but I hop they break in soon...

Foods Expiry Dates Mar 26 2008

I believe for dairy, it is recommended to consume up to 7 days after the expiration date, whether it has been opened or not. Once mine has reached the exp. date, I just use my nose to make sure it is ok. Once the 7 days are up, whether it smells good or not, I'm pitching it.

This is where my bf differs. He has a stomach made of steel and could probably drink curdled milk with no problem. I, on the other hand, had a stomach problem in 2nd grade thanks to bad water at Girl Scout camp, so I watch those dates like a hawk! I've even resorted to bringing some of my own food/milk to my bf's house, as I don't trust him when I ask about the juice "do you remember when you bought/opened this?"

Edit: Found this for NY State:  http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-york-city/ 241935-why-does-milk-have-earlier-expiration. html

The Lounge Chicken...should we not eat it at all? Mar 26 2008

We just had a nutritionist in our office yesterday for a "lunch n learn". The chicken topic came up. She advised the free-range, cage-free, whatever is just to attract people to buy their product. Supposedly, most of these places follow the federal minimum, which means to be free-range, the chickens have to be able to see the outside. In otherwords, they are still in a cage, they just have access to be in a cage outside too. I was surprised. Now, not all places are like this, but most likely, all of the large commercial producers will be.

If you are concerned about chicken, try using your local butcher shop. The chickens raised on the home farm are way more free-range or cage free than any commercial producer. These fresh eggs are spectactular and once you've had farm fresh eggs for awhile, you can taste a difference in the store-bought. Plus, you don't have to color them for Easter. Farm fresh already come in cool colors (white, brown, blue, green..)!  lol!

Foods Is it better not to drink water during a meal, or does it matter? Mar 26 2008

Original Post by dmartineau1:

The reason that I know for why "they" say that you are not supposed to drink water with meals is because of how the digestive system works. When you eat food your body produces acid to break down the food. Having water mixed in with the food makes it harder for the acid to break down the food, therefor, the body produce MORE acid. if you are always drinking water with your meals the body will think that it needs to produce more acid when it really doesn't. this can lead to acid reflux/heartburn.

I learned all of this in advanced anatomy so I'm pretty sure its correct? Hope it helps anyway

Very interesting! I've been on Zantac for a couple of years now for A/R. Do you remember if there was a recommended time frame to drink the water, i.e. wait 20 minutes after a meal, or have all you want before the meal, etc? Very interesting, thanks!

suz11137, thank you so much. I am relieved.. actually, I wanted to know my size after gaining 17-20 pounds during the past few months. I always keep track using this method. I try on different sizes and see the changes. It is really hard for me to determine from seeing myself in the mirror.

trnnbrn97, yes you are right. Mine were not petite. Hope to get there soon.:) I guess all the pant styles named Ann Taylor??

kaufmkk, thanks for such a great website. :)

Well, I thought petite meant short, so unless you plan to shrink in height....lol...but maybe I have that wrong. I'm not one to stay up on the latest terms when it comes to fashion. Regular dragged the floor on me, so I had to buy the petite.

They had several cuts, each having it's own name, i.e. "Julie", "Marisa", etc. So far Ann is my favorite:)

Um, well, here's what I came up with. I hope an expert can pipe in and advise if I'm on the right track to figuring this stuff out...lol. I figure the best way to learn is to try it, right?

BMR=1658

Daily Activity: you don't say above , but for sake of example, lets go with 1.3. (1.1=sedentary-desk duty, 1.2=light daily activity, 1.3=moderate daily activity-on the move all day, not sitting at a desk, 1.4=high physical activity-like manual labor)

1658 x's 1.3 = 2155 cals

2155 plus calories you burn that day during exercise, let's just say 200 cals=2355

To lose one pound would need negative 500 cals/day=1855/day or 12,985/week.

If you are keeping it below 12,985 calories for the week and you burn 200 cals a day w/exercise, you should see one pound weight loss/week in most cases.

Thoughts/corrections anyone?

I went to Ann Taylor in my lunch break. Tried on jeans size 8 and were perfect. I checked with the lady at the store if they were tight or anything and she said they look great and sexy. Isn't that weird?

I love Ann Taylor Loft. They carry just the right trendy clothes for me to wear to the office...not too business like, not too casual.

I have to say I'm concerned about your scale (or mine!). I just bought size 8's at A.T. Loft a couple of weeks ago and I weighed 140ish. The slacks I bought were a pant style named "Ann" (each style had its own name..).

It's my new favorite storeSmile

Edit: Ah! Wait...my 8's were Petite, so that could make sense! Thanks for the great website references above!

Fitness Running tips?! Mar 25 2008

I've started using the program recommended by Runner's World. After a good week of walking from 20-30 minutes, they start beginners off with the following:

Days 1-4, run 2 min, walk 4. do this sequence 5x's.

Days 5-8, run 3 min, walk 3 min. do this sequence 5x's.

Days 9-12, run 5 min, walk 2.5 min. do this sequence 4x's....and so-on.

It goes on for a recommended 10 weeks which builds you up to 30 minutes of straight running. I love their website and use their Runner's log, which lists this whole program in it. (I bought the little log book, rather than logging online for sake of convenience.) I highly recommend this site and mag. as I'm also a beginner and they seem to always have something for me.

Nothing fancy. "Turn and burn" is just another fun term we use to call barrel racing. The 97 is the year my horse was born. Always thought it would make a cool vanity plate for my truck, but I'm too cheap.

Well...I'm about 3" shorter, will that work? lol..

I'm 5'3" and now 137. I've lost 9 lbs so far. Goal is 10 more pounds, which if reached, I get to buy myself a Zune:) The more I keep reading/learning, the more I wonder if my goal weight should be lower. I just remember being in super shape in my mid-20's and weighed 128 (I'm now 33), so I can't imagine getting lower than that. I had fit in size 3's and 5's and looked good, so I think I'll stick with my current goal for now.

I'm supposed to be studying for an Economics exam...lol. Instead I'm online with Seinfeld on the TV in the background. Time for bed though.

I didn't join it as I didn't want to spend the $4/week or whatever it is, but I did buy her red book and signed up for the free email newsletter. Her book is very good. It is a no frills, down to business, get to the bottom of the numbers crunching type book. She focuses on what your body type is and how you best burn (suggests I take in 50% carbs, 25% protein, 25% fats type of info...).

She gets into a lot of "weaknesses" and common pitfalls also. Her exercise routine/schedule at the back is a bit confusing, but she has a great glossery of different types of moves. I keep the book in my car and review before I head into the gym what I want to work on for the day.

Hope this helps some:)

My current favorite filling lunch is:

3 oz. chunk white chicken (or flake tuna, but I don't like tuna) on 2 slices of very thin whole wheat bread mixed with 1 tbsp. light miracle whip; 2 cups salad w/1 tbsp. light italian dressing. I toast the bread for more interesting texture.

It is easy to pack in the morning with some various tupperware containers; it prepares/packs easily and quickly.

Not sure if the Miracle Whip will work with the lactose intolerant, sorry:( I just re-read and saw that...

I'm definitely in. I'm a little new to CC, so this will be a great way to learn my way around the site too:)

I won free airline tickets last month and I was thinking about California (I'm from Ohio), so I have to see the beach and wear a swim suit in public. I've lost 9 lbs so far and my goal weight was 130. This 10 lb goal will put me at 127, but I know this is still on the mid side of my BMI, so I should be able to handle it just fine. I'm around 5'3-5'4. I haven't been in the 120's since my 20's...lol. I celebrate my 33rd b-day today.

I am on a free week-long trial for a local gym and went there today. Jogged for the first time since my 20's. Felt so good to be out again.

Thanks for the great idea and opportunity to join!

The Lounge Don't you hate it when..... Mar 22 2008

I hate it when I actually take the time to take my lunch hour and go to the workout room in the office. I swear I will rip that @#$! phone off the wall if I keep getting paged! Gosh forbid should I take a freaking lunch hour! I don't care if we need a phone in that room. If someone is having a heart attack on the treadmill, I know CPR!

I hate it that it is the second day of spring and we are expecting 8" of snow tonight:(

I hate it that my local radio station won't be broadcasting Bob & Tom in the Morning come April 1st. And I refuse to pay for satellite radio!

I hate it when I tell people a horse I have for sale is "green broke" and still needs training and then they ask me if he is safe for their eight year-old daughter who just started riding last summer...."hello? did I not just say he still needs training???" I have little patience for ignorant horse people.

I hate it that my 15 year old Australian Shepherd is not doing very well and I just know I am going to be forced to make a decsion for him pretty soon.  I REALLY REALLY HATE THIS. I pray God will take this into his hands soon. I've had to put down alot of old dogs in my lifetime, and don't need anymore life lessons on this subject. Please, take him so I don't have to make such a difficult decision for my bff. Cry

Weight Loss Feel like giving up Mar 22 2008

It will pass...don't give up! I was just reading about this in a book by Jillian Michaels. If you stick with the same calorie intake everyday, your metabolism will adapt to the new fixed reduction of calories. Once this happens, it slows down (obviously, not good). So you may be shooting for 1400 cals a day (for example), but instead of doing that, shoot for 9800 in seven days, i.e. 1300 one day, 1600 another, 1400 another, and so on. This way, your metabolism can't adapt to the new calorie reduction and the chances of hitting the plateau will be smaller.

Also, don't forget we will usually lose water weight at the beginning and then slow down, then the weight starts to go down again...think positive, you are doing well!

Great job on the nine pounds! I've lost seven so far and to be feeling a difference in my jeans is a motivator in itself. At least my "fat" jeans fit me now...lol.
