Things that drive you crazy at the gym, and something embarrassing you did! |

Well I hate when you go to the gym and the trainers try to get your number or are talking to you while you work out. I asked a simple question about which exercise is more effective. That bamma didn't leave my side until I left the gym. I had to leave bcuz he was getting on my nerves. I stopped going to the gym bcuz of these men.
Well I'm one of those people who has there cell phones at the gym. Only bcuz I leave my 4 year old home with my 15 year old. Well I was talking on it(disciplining my 4 year old) while on the treadmill and next thing I know I missed a step and went flying off of it. I had to laugh at myself. I normally step off of it when on my cell phone. I think my son wrote on my wall or my tv and I was very upset at the time. |

Original Post by caramanna:
I purchased 'curvy' in gap in a size 4. It is so frustrating to buy clothes because I am an extreme hourglass. Currently 25 inch waist 40 hips (I don't know my measurements back then, but I was the same proportions). So yes, non-fat girls do buy 'curvy'.
I wish more companies had 'curvy'. I can't buy shorts at H and M because the waist sizes go up but not the hips or thighs. I end up only fitting into a size 31 (waist) on my thighs, but having such a huge gap at the waist that it's not wearable.
My BF loves my curves btw. Whenever he finds out I'm losing weight, he reiterates, "make sure you do your squats so you can keep your butt."
Carramanna I'm with you. I'm slim but I have curves. My waist is not as small as yours (29/30) but I have problems with shorts/pants that fit my 40 hips but the waist is too big. Try www.pzijeans.com they make jeans/shorts for women with large butts, wide hips and small waist. |

Though I wasn't as heavy in the stomach area but I did have a nice pouch. I did the treadmill for 20 minutes (using 8lbs weighs while on it), elliptical for 20; then leg lunges and crunches (I put a 10lb weight on my chest when doing this). I used the the lil 10lb weighs as well (what are they called again?). I did this 4x a week and then on Friday I did kickboxing for and hour. I lost my stomach. It took me 3 months. I changed my diet as well. Now I'm toning while in the process of gaining some of my weight back. I lost 8 lbs too many. |

Very ignorant statement, just because you don't think someone LOOKS in shape doesn't mean they don't know what they're talking about. Just look at professional bodybuilders who bulk for most of the year and only cut down a few months before competition season.
I've seen some fit-looking people who know absolutely nothing about proper diet and exercise. Don't judge based on looks alone.

Yes I'm a female! Now I don't want to look all beefy I just want to be toned but still soft.
Getting "all beefy" doesn't just happen overnight, let's say your currently at a 1 and someone who is "all beefy" is a 10, you'd have to go through 2, then 3, then 4...
If you only want to be a 4 or 5 lift like you're trying to get to 10 and just stop when you're at a 4 or 5.
If you want to increase muscle tone you need to lift heavy and focus on compound movements, if you don't move 2 major joints (knees, hips, shoulders, elbows) during a lift don't do it.
It would also probably be a good idea to find a professionally designed program, I hear the New Rules of Lifting for Women is excelent.
Edit to add: You can't gain any weight (muscle or otherwise) if you aren't eating above maintainance
Okay thanks! Yeah I know about the eating above maintainance. I'm already eating about 500 calories over because I am trying to gain.

Do all the workouts you see the big beefy guys doing but with much lower weight. Start low... concentrate on form... talk to people in the gym who are in good shape... I wouldn't ask advice from people who aren't in good shape because obviously they don't follow their own advice. Experiment with stuff at the gym and try to get a couple different workouts for each main muscle group (chest, legs, arms, back, shoulders, stomach). MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL: GO TO THE GYM!
I'm not using caps to be mean, just stressing that if you want to gain back 10 lbs or so, the only way to do it healthy is to replace it with muscle. If you just eat more, you'll just add back some of the fat you lost.
Yes, I'm going back to the gym. Thanx!

Vitamins and protein supplements? |

Original Post by cali4niagurl777:
char's protein does seem low but then again everyone is different. I need to follow a 40/40/20 ratio and my carbs always match my protein, high protein does my body good, my back and butt are hard spots and all the protein helps.
I use protein shakes daily since I'm always so short on time, it's hard to cook a chicken breast or a hunk of fish and too much tuna can be bad for women. The protein shakes I HIGHLY recommend are Myoplex Lite or Original if you dont' mind the extra 150 cals (Delicious in chocolate cream). You will need a shaker bottle for these and they can get pricey, but they have about half of your daily mineral needs in one pouch.
For Ready To Drink shakes you can put in your purse or keep in your car, Muscle Milk Light are the greatest ever, as well as Myoplex RTD (a little more diluted, but still tasty).
Best tub powders are Pro-Nos (cookies and cream rocks) and good for a pre-workout shake, and try to find a casein based protein for before bed-time, mix with skim milk for a creamier texture.
I used to work at a GNC and their brand is CRAP, go third party on this stuff.
GNC stuff make me want to throw up.....just nasty. Okay..............thanx!!!!!

When should I weigh myself to see the change? |
Apr 29 2008 16:35 (UTC) |

Original Post by schmeester:
What works for me is to weigh myself every Friday morning at the same time ...after I use the bathroom, and in the nude. I have found that with daily or even bi daily weigh ins the water weight and other factors tend to make my weight flexuate within 5 pounds. Also, lean muscle weigh more than fat so if you are losing fat and gaining muscle the scale will not tell the difference. It can be great one day and then two days later I am up 5 pounds and then I feel like crap. I personally believe it is all about measurements and the way your clothes are fitting.
OK..Thanx!

Original Post by missmagill:
In the beginning of gaining, you should weigh every other day until you find out what causes you to gain. Then you should switch to a once-a-week weighing. Be sure to always weigh in the morning before eating or drinking, after going to the bathroom, and wearing the same clothes for accuracy. Your weight will fluctuate no matter what, but doing this will make the number as accurate as possible.
Best of luck with everything!:]
Thank You! I guess I need to buy a scale for the house. I weigh myself at the fitness center at my job.

You know what I went through this all in high school and even now. I'm 34 yrs old 5'7" and I weigh 143lbs. Women would all ways tell me I was too skinny and that I needed some meat on my bonds. They'd say, "Black women have curves"! It was this one girl who I thought was my friend but she'd ALWAYS ask me where I was hiding my jars. She was basically saying I was throwing up in jars and hiding them. I've never had a ED. This really use to get to me ladies and gave me a complex about my size 8. I had my son at 30 and the same "friend" would say, "you are not going to have that cute little shape after you have this baby." Yeah I got up to 210 lbs but after I had him I dropped to 160. I still looked good I just had a "video booty". Women still had negative remarks about that. I started going to the gym bcuz my doctor recommended it. I have high BP. Ladies I have 2 kids now and I'm back to my pre-pregnancy size- 143lbs. I have realized some women are evil and very jealous. The people who were telling me I was too skinny where fat women. They basically wished they could eat anything and stay slim. I still have an issue with being 143lbs but hell I'm alive and healthy. Sorry I was really venting! |

I agree that you should consult your doc., but sometimes a simple stool softener can do the trick. If you change your diet dramatically you can develope IBS (mostly temporary) and you just need a little kick-start to get it back on track. If you don't see a difference with the softeners after a few days (no more than three), definately call your MD.
Thanx! |

Are you recovering from starvation? If you are, this is a very normal and common thing. Your body has been through alot and is attempting to readjust...often doing weird things. You may eventually find yourself going multiple times a day! Anyway, talk to your doctor about it. They can prescribe something like merilax (fiber laxitive) to help get things going or send you to a GI specialist if the problem persists. I've had such a love/hate relationship with my tooshy over the past year it's insane.;] I'm pretty regular now, though, after plenty of help from my doctor.
I'm not recovering from starvation. I had a bad break up and couldn't eat as much. Then I had the flu.

I would say DON'T stop going to the gym. You don't want to gain the weight back in fat, your body will look better and more fit/attractive if you gain it in muscle and tone up. Eat a calorie surplus and hit the wieghts. Get lots of protein!
high cal foods - full fat yogurt, cottage cheese, nuts, cheese, peanut butter, almond butter
:)
Thanks....would u recommend protein shakes?

I'm trying to gain as well but my doctor told me to try and build muscle. I'm 34 years old and I weight 145lbs and I'm 5'7". My doctor said I was crazy because I'm a good size and I'm healthy. I had a baby 3 years ago and I went from 140 to 210 lbs. After the delivery I dropped to like 185lbs. It took me a year for the weight to shed without any exercise. I got down to 160lbs and I was loving it but I didn't like the "kangoroo pouch". So I decided to hit the gym last March but I lost like 15lbs. My stomach is flat but now I'm skinny. I want to gain atleast 8 lbs now. This website is great. Look for the post "New member trying to gain 33 pounds" under this forum. There are some great post replies that should help you to gain. Good Luck!!! |

Yeah, I hear you. I tried today looking for weight gain shakes at wal-mart and couldn't find as single thing to help gain weight. There were at least 2 aisles full weight loss drinks/shakes and pills. I think my best bet is just trying to get the most calorie-dense foods possible. Problem is, I hate potatoes, all forms of pasta and stuff like that so its really hard. Right now I'm just trying to eat a lot of red meat to get easy calories. Not the best way to go but at this point any weight gain could only serve to motivate me. Someone might have suggested this but I drink Ensure Plus. My doctor recommended it. I use to drink it back when I was in my early 20's. I was like 128 lbs, and 5'7". I'm trying to gain as well. My doctor also suggested I gain muscle also (I believe someone already suggested that as well.) |

Happy New Year all!!! Here's my story: I'm trying to gain about 8lbs because I lost too much weight. I starting hitting the gym 5 days a week in March 07. My cardio consisted of 20 minutes on the treadmill or the Elliptical then an extreme kickboxing class on Friday. I did other things like weight lifting, squats, crunches, sit ups, push ups, etc..... I really just wanted to tone and loose the little kangoroo pouch in my stomach. I lost that pouch but I went from 160 to like 145lbs. I want to aleast be 152lbs the most. I liked my thick thighs and hips. Now I'm trying to gain. I haven't been to the gym for 2 months due to back problems. I still haven't gained any freakin weight over the holidays either. I've maintained this weight. The doctor has allowed me back in the gym which I'll be starting next Monday (which is the day after my 34th b'day). I am 5'7" and want to be back in my size 10 clothing. Any suggestions!!!! What is your current size? What are your measurements? I am just asking because you say you want to go up to a "size 10 clothing" which is fine, but do you need to gain fat? Were you directed by your Dr. to gain weight? Is our body fat % too low. If not, why not try to build muscle? Muscle weighs more than fat, so if you build more muscle, you can still gain lbs, but they will be lean healthy lbs. Just an option to look at. I did not see anything in your file, so I don't know any details but according to "health status" this is the weight info they gave me based on your height According to your height of 5' 7" your ideal healthy weight is 143 pounds. Your recommended weight range is between 127 and 159 pounds. This was calculated using Hamwi formula, a simple formula commonly used by many clinicians. These are recommended weights. Talk with your doctor about what weight is best for you and before undertaking any new diet or exercise programs. http://www.healthstatus.com/calculators.html That is the link if you want to check out other health calculators. Of course it is all estimates, and everyone is different, if you don'd feel comfortable at your current weight and want to gain as long as it is a safe healthy range for your height and your doc says it is ok then great. Please, understand I am just trying to make you aware of your options, and not saying I think you shouldnt gain weight. I hope that makes sense? I love that saying "knowledge is power"! Good luck and take care. Oh yeah and Happy Birthday!! :+) Are you having a special birthday dinner?
I wear a size 8 and my measurements are 34-30-42. I just feel really small. LOL!!! My BMI is 22.5. Yeah I spoke with my doctor yesterday and he said the samething. I talked to my trainer and I am going back to the gym to build muscle. Thank You for everything!! I'm going to party with my girls and have a few drinks and of course I'm going to eat dinner. |
