| Weight Loss | Have you ever felt like you were the fattest person at the gym? | Dec 04 2008 04:15 (UTC) |

Lol, that's a great subject line. I think most of us can relate to that feeling. I always used to feel awkward about going to our campus gym, because there were so many young, fit folks there. I started working with the Phys Ed. professors though, and it didn't take me long to realize that they are just seriously excited to see me working and embracing fitness, which is after all, their life's work. It's affirming in that sense for them, and they do not spend time judging me negatively. It has really lowered my "gym inhibitions."

Don't know about collages, lol, but there are a few colleges, even in the beef-friendly state of Texas. UT-Austin and Austin College both come to mind. |

Well, it undoubtedly would make an impact in youth. That's the demographic we have most generally studied. The current schooling environments and a general lack of diverse stimulation are a hot topic at present. What's interesting about current research is that it is overturning these long-held notions that decay and decline of the brain is inevitable. We have folk saying like "use it or lose it," but we weren't so good at applying them in this area. |

Oops, and one more....recent MIT research by L. Tsai involving rats suggests that the long-debated brain shrinkage/memory loss with age in not an inevitability, but may be a by-product of reduced social stimulation as we age. A short (and incomplete, unfortunately) video on her work can be accessed here: |

Lol, I wish I could use that excuse for pregnancy. Unfortunately, two recent peer-reviewed articles came out demonstrating compelling support for increased brain functioning during and shortly following gestation. See this month's American Psyc Assn's Monitor on Psychology, "The Pregnant Brain." Also The Maternal Brain in Scientific American Mind reviews some studies done in this area. |

Well, I teach the psychology of sexuality, so I am no medical expert, but what I've gathered from medical colleagues is that there are a variety of causes, many basically of undefined etiology. Pre-menstrual bloating seems sometimes to be associated with the overproduction of certain hormones secreted by the adrenal glands in response to varying estrogen levels. Some women report that BC seems to exacerbate the problem, which makes sense because of their basic composition of (in most cases) synthetic hormones.

If it is that uncomfortable and you are on BC as well, talk to your doctor about this in general (to rule out other concerns) and also about swtching BC. Last word from my colleague at Planned Parenthood was that there are just over 60 different BC pills on the market, and each has different individual effects. Maybe you just need a little "tweak" in dosage/composition. |

Well, the days of toddler wisdom are far behind me, but the hits keep coming even with teens. I am serving as a guinea pig for a friend who is training as a personal coach, and she had me do an exercise where I ask roughly 9-10 people the following: What qualities do I bring into a room? My friends said things like intelligence, adventurous spirit, fun, etc. My 15yo son replies, "Ninja-skills, cookies, and the dog." |

Not sure where you live, but our local community college has a really nice gym, and the rates for non-students who live in our county are very inexpensive. I think it's around $30.00 per semester. Wayyy cheaper than your typical health club, and they have roughly the same equipment. |

I teach Human Sexuality at our local college (a perenial favorite course, I might add, lol). A good all around resource for parents (or teachers, or higher ed folks, etc) is SIECUS.org. They are a research institution devoted to sexuality issues. You can find information on age-appropriate resources, suggestions on opening up communication with kids, as well as a host of other educational tidbits that can always be useful for parents. |

I'm with Jewel. For me personally, I'd have to reconsider the relationship and would probably have to channel this one into friendship mode. Sex is just too integral to the intimacy I need, and at just a visceral physical level, it is not forfeitable. The straying with permission idea is just asking for trouble. Yes, there are very rare instances where couples work this out in the short term, but consider how challenging it might be to keep your emotions unntangled with your side partners. Check out anthropologist Helen Fisher's Why We Love: The Nature and Chemisty of Romantic Love. She has done interesting research on the biochemistry of attraction, obsession, love and rejection. When you have sex, you are not just risking psychological attachment, but there are neurochemical considerations as well. Good luck to you! |

| When I cook with olive oil, I measure it and count the entire amount, e.g, 1 tbsp extra virgin organic is 120 calories. Most of it is being absorbed into the food if I am stri frying or something like that, so I try not to "cheat" by counting on having some portion burn off. | |||

I teach at a college. (It does not improve as the students age.) ;) I run all day. Like "Lose40," this semester I have made a point to take care of myself by just forcing myself to take a few minutes. I keep Kashi bars, Starkist LunchTOGO, and soup in my desk for days when mornings are hectic getting my son to school and I forget to pack a lunch. (As mentioned, Luna bars are a great option as well.) I am making a point go to the break room and get away from my classroom and office for 20-30 minutes a day so that I can eat. It did require me to get myself a little more organized. (I tend to fly by the seat of my pants some days.) |

The mentally ill don't really trouble me, and people are always seeking some higher explanation for existence via religion. In the end, cults are just religions that only a fraction of folks believe in. (Christians hate hearing this, but Christianity began as a cult, just like the rest.) For me, the biggest problem with this is the hypocrisy behind his nearly incomprehensible words. You have to do something; you know you're the only one who can help; you're either in or you're out. What exactly has Cruise concretely done to make the world a better place? Maybe make a few movies that entertained for an hour or two? There's certainly value in that, but I demure on placing that on par with uniting cultures, if that were possible. |

Love the tagline. I have the shirt! I agree that moving from station to station is a good strategy for an attentional issue. Is it really attention though or motivation? I took my students to the gym for a talk on stress by our campus Phys Ed professor. He is actually a refreshing guy for PHED in that he says if you don't enjoy it, you're not going to do it. So focusing is good advice, but maybe you can reconsider your motivation. Are you doing this exercise to lose weight or because you're "supposed" to to be heathy? Extrinisic motivation like that rarely is effective in the long term. You want to find something you can enjoy. (As an aside, he warned to use music with caution, as he said you can get moving with the beat instead of the pace you need and overextend yourself very easily.) I only go to the gym when my workout buddies are there. Otherwise, it's no fun for me. Also, you never "get anywhere" at the gym. I much prefer to be outside and have a goal. I don't really exercise: I walk a couple of miles to the store for whatever errand I need to do. We work with scouts, and hiking and biking are part of that. The fact that you get somewhere appeals to me and holds my attention, as well as keeping me motivated. |

| What a good message to spot before putting coffee on this morning. Thanks for the suggestion! --With apophenia's caveat for me as well. After hearing my in-law (biochem prof) explain the composition and reactions with heat of aspartame, I decided I could afford 16 calories for the tsp of sugar. | |||

Yea for you! You are doing great in building your foundation for a healthy rest of your life. I chuckled at the comment about getting enough calories. I didn't think that it would be possible to live within the prescribed amount when I started on here a couple weeks ago, but it's SO true that you end up needing cals at the end of day when you are eating healthy foods! :) |

I use low plain yogurt for smoothies. Put 1/4 cup each of yogurt, milk and orange juice and 1/2 cup of frozen strawberries. Mmmm.... It is fairly high calorie, but dense and filling with a decent balance of nutrients. |
