| Weight Loss | Carbs are not the enemy!!! | Nov 25 2009 21:08 (UTC) |

Original Post by downdeep: downdeep, I've found a lot of very good information on CC that has helped me lose weight, and I resent you immplying that since I'm diabetic, the sound principals that work for other people on here will not work for me. That's not true. No two people are alike, but sound principals have a built in way to tweak them a bit, which is why we come on here every day & ask how "what do I do to fix XYZ. Those people who have put in their time and know what works are very good about giving that help. I think it's as irresponsible to tell people they must have a specific percentage of carbs, as it is to tell them they can only lose weight using one particular diet. When I followed the link you provided, I looked at Chapter 3 Weight Management. Maybe you should read it again and you will see that 60% carbs is the highest end of recommendation. I think maybe more are needed for more active people. Like football players told to increase their carbs to "bulk up" while training? Here's what I read in chapter 3. I highlited the part shown in bold. Chapter 3 Weight ManagementLifestyle change in diet and physical activity is the best first choice for weight loss. A reduction in 500 calories or more per day is commonly needed. When it comes to body weight control, it is calories that count—not the proportions of fat, carbohydrates, and protein in the diet. However, when individuals are losing weight, they should follow a diet that is within the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges (AMDR) for fat, carbohydrates, and protein, which are 20 to 35 percent of total calories, 45 to 65 percent of total calories, and 10 to 35 percent of total calories, respectively. Diets that provide very low or very high amounts of protein, carbohydrates, or fat are likely to provide low amounts of some nutrients and are not advisable for long-term use. Although these kinds of weight- loss diets have been shown to result in weight reduction, the maintenance of a reduced weight ultimately will depend on a change in lifestyle. Successful and sustainable weight loss and weight maintenance strategies require attention to both sides of the energy balance equation (i.e., caloric intake and energy expenditure). |

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. That was summer of 1986 & I was 14 lbs overweight. I started the Atkins diet that same weekend and stayed on it for the next 19 years. Atkins worked well for me until 2006 when I decided to quit smoking and promptly gained 60 lbs. Atkins never said cut out carbs, he said reduce them, then add them back slowly until you know how many you can tolerate and still lose, gain or maintain your weight. What he did say is cut out refined sugar & refined flour. He never said don't eat fruit or veggies, he said eat more of the ones that are have a low glycemic index, and less of the high glycemic ones. Marty Hartley, RD, Director of Nutrition for CC, addressed the Atkins diet in Ask Mary

I, too, look better at more than my "ideal" weight. I'm 5'8" & look like one of those people from the concentration camps at 148 lbs. My bones are long, and I think that has something to do with it, but I'm not sure what. I always need an extra 20 lbs., and more is not bad looking. Do people think you look sick at your lowest weight? |

My doctor says it's 4 things: muscle mass, bone density, metabolism, & estrogen. He says everyone can slow down these four things through proper diet, exercise, & medication, but the process of ageing goes on. On the same subject, I wonder if women on HRT can lose weight easier, since estrogen comes from body fat, and as you age, your body holds onto that fat harder to keep the estrogen it needs. |

A fruit basket as a hostess gift, and a few granola bars for your backpack/suitcase should fix that problem for 48 hours. Just be sure to have enough to share with everyone since there's nothing ruder than eating without offering to share. |

I really like fresh asparagus, but I LOVE canned asparagus. I rinse it while it's still in the can, which reduces the sodium by approximately 30%. For a side dish, nuke it in a small amount of water for 5 minutes & drizzle with a bit of ranch dressing. For cream of asparagus soup, use 1 can, cut it into 1/4 in. pieces, and simmer in 1 can of chicken broth for 15 minutes, add 1 cup heavy cream, and stir to combine. |

You did not say whether or not you've replaced the belief your parents tried to give you with another one or not, just that you do not share their belief. Lying to a terminally ill person in order to make their last days easier is an admirable thing to do, IMO. I say lie, and feel good that you made it easier for your mom to die in peace. |

absolutely yes I would, and for your daughter, the neighbor's daughter & a total stranger's daughter. In fact, I'd like them to start putting birth control in milk, and tell people who want to get pregnant to just stop drinking milk. |

Sounds to me like you need to find a baby sitter, get a job, and learn to be a grown up. If the boy friend doesn't learn to be a grown up too, you're gonna need that job, because single mothers usually always wind up caring for their children alone. Sue him for child support and let him visit the children without you being there. Problem solved. |

the key to saving money is advance planning, so you know how much you have to spend, what you're going to spend it on, and when you are going to spend it. Make up 7 menus for breakfast, 7 for lunch, & 7 for dinner. Include the number of snacks you need for 7 days. List every single ingredient you need to make those dishes, and buy only the items on the list. Save this to a food file, along with the recipes. Print out the list of ingredients, and mark off the ones you already have on hand, such as spices, condiments & any usable left-over foods. There is your shopping list. The next week, you can either make new menus or start all over with the same ones. You will have eaten those food combinations only 4 times a month, so no boredom. |

Original Post by karozel: karozel, since your daughter doesn't qualify for medicaid because she is able to work, the best answer for her may be to join in a clinical trial. They're going on all over the place right now, and they aren't income based. Here's a link to one listing that is recruiting right now, and there are many others : http://clinicaltrials.gov/search/open/conditi on=Degenerative+disc+disease If you can't find one here that interests her, do a google search and check out the ones currently recruiting. One place that may have an immediate answer for you is: Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center I don't have the name of a contact person there, but since you live in the area, you can find out easy enough when they are conducting clinical trials. |

There are many places to turn for health care , maybe if you tell us more about yourself, I could refer you to an agency that could help you obtain the help you need. |
