Hi all! jfk61 I love the idea for a change in posting once we get within 200 miles! If people are unable to post daily, maybe we could chunk it? I imagine once we get that close, it will be a race to the finish with people running extra just to be the one break the line. Like a virtual race!! My goal for Aug. 1st is just to run. I spent almost all of last week in the hospital and am now totally off running wise. Forget the July challenge... I've logged somewhere around 26 miles this month so I'm not even close! Today I panted through 1.5 miles but overall spent 50 minutes on the treadmill, so I'm happy. And, is it possible to backlog 4 miles from Sun. the 19th? I forgot to post it before I went to the ER on Tuesday (I don't know what I was thinking...).

joyfulake -- we welcome the debates!!! I think many of us like the different viewpoints and often learn something in the process. So, debate away! ;-) That stinks about your timing chip!! But at the same time, way to go for doing a 5K! I agree, mid-week 5Ks -- well races of any kind -- are fun. Heck, even just evening ones. I love not having to wake up early or hope I use the bathroom before I leave the house. I also hate having to stop to untie my shoes post-race. Lately a few of the races I've done have used twist ties or similar which makes it easier post-race. I'm usually so exhausted that I rip the darn thing off pretty quickly (adrenaline I imagine). One race used a timing chip that was in the bib. It was pretty cool but I don't think as accurate (it felt like it added time AND it still started with the gun) AND I didn't get to keep the bib (I personally keep all the bibs and write my finish time on it). EDIT: PS -- I'm glad you liked the post. It was a nice summary of how I've been feeling lately in trying to regain ground post-14 day break & in preparation for a 10 mile run I signed up for pre-break. I've been trying really hard to remind myself that right now just running the 10 miler in Aug. will be a huge accomplishment. |

Jenka that totally stinks. Hang in there; you know what you are doing is the right thing to do. Maybe you should create a new July challenge that challenges you to keep the mileage down and crosstrain? Just throwing it out there. Congratulations to the Mileage Markers!!! Fitnessfreak --1000 MILES!!! Kscout you are moving fast!! Didn't you just join the site?! In order to celebrate my surprise day off (a therapist that I was scheduled to oversee called out sick) AND me not messing up which mileage calculation week was mine, I'm posting something to motivate everyone. Maybe I'll dig around for some other discussion worthy topics. How's that for a run-on sentence?? I've taken this from John "The Penguin" Bingham's website: Dear John: Letters to the Penguin. Can anyone tell he's one of my favorites? You can find this and other letters at: http://rodale.typepad.com/the_penguin/ July 10, 2008 Motivation to Keep Trying
Hi Jenny, Thanks for the great e-mail. You have identified one of the most difficult parts of becoming a runner. How do you enjoy the process if the outcome isn’t what you expect? Well, the good news is, you can. I finished last, or nearly last, in lots of races. One time, at a 10-K in Little Rock, Arkansas, by mile one I couldn’t see anyone in front of me. Luckily, another participant was kind enough to stay with me so that I wouldn’t get lost. It can be discouraging if you’re comparing yourself to everyone else out there. I don’t. I only compare the “me” that I am now with the “me” that I used to me. As I tell people, if you think I look bad running, you should have seen me drunk. I also remind myself that I am a work in progress. Even after nearly 17 years of running and walking I’m not what I want to be. Some goals I now realize that I’ll never achieve. Others, like completing a 50-K or 50-mile event, are still out there somewhere. So, line up proud. You’re out there. You’re giving it your best shot. You’re changing your life with your own two feet. And that is something to celebrate! Waddle on, |

So many wonderful things happened over the weekend! Way to go everyone! Joyfulake, go you for choosing the hills and double yay for the pain management (wait, that didn't come out right -- but you know what I mean right?). kscout, wow!!! 14 miles!!! Fantastic! Manta, it sounds like you got great advice, so I'll stick with -- VANUATU! ;-) Wiliwigi -- welcome to the wonderful world of hills! We are happy to have you. And a general welcome to sordino!! Jenka, be careful. You are smart to rest. Do you plan on going to a doctor or waiting it out? Keep us updated. I'm glad to hear the plumbing issue has a band-aid until you can afford (financially and time wise) to fix it all. What a blech thing. Hope your time in Boston was fun! Skinny_kitty, congrats to your kids -- how wonderful to share this aspect of your life with them! I was thinking about you yesterday (and jfk) when a friend suggested triathalons due to her injury recovery. At one point in my life I was like, HELL NO but now, I'm hearing it and thinking, hmmm could I do that? But it will have to wait until after we move when I might have access to a pool. Whew, all that being said -- 3.5 miles today. (still on a treadmill... I'm seriously worried about this 10 miler that I ambitiously scheduled before Egypt) I'm having major motivation issues, even with the July challenge. I'm okay once I start running, but getting myself out there is tough sometimes. Any advice? |

Wow, I didn't think the post would stir the pot as much as it did. But I'm glad!!! joyfulake, you make good points, but I think (humbly) you are getting caught up in the semantics. What I took from the question and response was that, so many people do get caught up in the semantics. The terms are relative. The elite runners still "jog" on a day off or a light day. But their "jog" is still much faster than my "run." And I run and jog, it depends on my training goals for the day. Lately, after that brief hiatus, I've been doing much more "jogging," which is what I need. But I still run races and events. After all, it's not called a 5K jog/walk, it's called a 5K run/walk. And the sport isn't called Jogging, it's called Running. So, it doesn't matter who my audience is -- I'm a runner. I don't know how long you've been reading Runner's World, but the debate picked up quite a bit about a year ago, when the magazine ran an ad that distinguished runners and joggers. The ad made me (and many other readers) a little frustrated. In his column in the November 2007 issue, John Bingham wrote a fantastic response called, "I Am Not a Jogger." I put it in a journal entry on my profile. You can click on my picture to get the link or go to http://caloriecount.about.com/users/primadonn a98/202218.html. I was going to post it here, but it seemed kind of long. Although, I would love to here why everyone else calls themself a runner. Anyway! 3.55 miles yesterday. Like you, wrm2105, this humidity has me wilting, although your 91+ miles toward your goal is fantastic! I can't seem to get up early enough to beat it, and it's still too thick at night. Jenka, thank you sooo much for posting the June challenge results. What a fabulous addition to the thread! EDIT: Jenka, what happened to your plumbing?? Did it get worked out? I just briefly read the threads so I probably missed the one with the update. Tell me -- did you rob a bank?!! ;-) |

I'M BAAAAAACK!! Egypt was amazing. I was in absolute awe standing in front of buildings & items that were in existence before Christ. The school we worked at in Suez was uplifting and incredible. I did do a 1 mile run on a treadmill the first da there to beat the jetlag... and then, my running gear sat dormant. :-) ducklingerthank, have fun! I just saw you will be headed there soon. Have you been there before? Bring sunblock and bugspray. I'll post pictures as soon as my lazy butt uploads them from my camera. I'm doing my best to get caught up on posts, so bare with me. Congrats to all the June challenges accomplished!!! I missed my mileage by about 4 miles, which I was happy with. I came back more jetlagged than expected and bombarded by allergies. ACK. It's true that the heat without humidity is sooo much better than with it. Ok, miles... This week: I hope to get more miles in by tomorrow. My goal for July is 50 miles (yikes, I better get running). I lacked a lot of motivation after 14 days of not running, so my first run last week was AWFUL! I felt like I'd just put running shoes on for the first time... yikes. I may stick to a treadmill for a week or so until I get the umph and focus back. I would also like to share something from the June issue of Runner's World (I know I'm behind, but I'm trying to catch up on the issues I didn't read due to the trip). I hope it motivates everyone and reminds us of why we are here as we set July (or long-term) goals. (It's from the Ask Miles section:) Dear Miles, Jogging imples that you lack passion and commitment, that you're out there on the road in $130 running shoes simply for show, that you could take the sport or leave it (and often do leave it). Ask any runner, and he or she will tell you that we run with passion, we run to push our limits and to live healthier lives, we run races not because we think we'll win but to be members of a larger community. Most important, whether we clock six-minute or 12-minute miles, we don't jog -- we run. Amen! Happy running! |

Hopefully the test results will come back sooner than 3 weeks. Hang in there! Mmm, I love birthday dinners, Jenka!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you and wrm2105! I'm glad to hear Boston went well. Congrats to jfk for the amazing results!! WTG! Welcome back joyfulake!! I'll do free weights to get my arms/upper body, sit-ups/crunches for my abs (my inconsistently has proven to be my downfall as my abs are NOT the 6-pack shown by some women on the cover of Runner's World... sigh), and squats/leg bends for my legs. I spend less time there because I run, but I'll do squats every once in a while in the hopes that someday my thighs won't touch... if I dream it, I can achieve it -- isn't that how it goes? (in my dreams, I am a Kenyan...) June Challenge Update: I got the 5K PR, and I'm only 5-ish miles from the 30 total miles in June. I'm hoping to either do the miles while in Egypt or the 2 days of the month I have left when I come back. I feel like I've been very MIA recently. I'm blaming it on preparing for the trip to Egypt. Thanks to everyone who sent me advice either here or by PM! I'm really excited but a tad nervous. I'll be bringing my running shoes, but I won't post miles (if any!) until I get back. Mileage for this past week:

Original Post by shannymedic: Hang in there, shannymedic. I can't imagine losing 2 grandparents 2 days apart. Two weeks before my wedding my grandmother died, and I remembered reading an article about a man who ran every day -- even on days of funerals and births. I remembered the story in my head and thought, if I run, I'm sure I'll feel better. But I didn't. I couldn't. When I did start running again, I had quite a few runs with tears streaming down my face, but despite that it helped a lot to be by myself both to think about the past and the future and to focus on the now. It made me feel better ultimately, and I started running more. We all grieve in different ways, so you do what you have to do to get through it. When you're ready, running will be there waiting for you. |

What a week for me to be MIA! I just caught up on all the "stories" and wished I'd checked in more. Add me to the list of "brainiacs" in high school where the most warming up I did was on stage for drama or choir. Fast forward to college where I added beer and midnight pizza/cheesesteak runs and THEN started smoking. I enjoyed being "active," and after grad school, joined a gym and went regularly until I got sick (in a slightly unrelated illness -- another time, another story). Fast forward post surgery when I like most others never realized I was out of shape (due to enjoying being at the gym) until I hit 185 and none of my seasonal clothes fit. I was had gone through horrible GI problems and looked at myself in the mirror and just cried. Then, I kicked myself in the ass, educated myself on eating right and portion control, went back to the gym and started running. I still struggle with portion control and sweets, especially this time of the year when birthdays meet work overload/stress and end of the year parties. That being said, I just finished the LAZIEST week. The heat hit me hard; I wilted like a flower and refused to leave my air conditioned apartment. So, I ran an amazing 3.2 miles last week (ending yesterday). On a plus, I HIT ONE OF MY JUNE GOALS!! My 3.2 miles included the local Run the Monk 5K where I shattered my old PR of 29:41 and ran a fantastic 27:58! Tonight: 2.75 miles as I get back into the groove and enjoy that the heat wave ended. In other news, I'm updating the mileage tonight. Thanks for posting your miles, everyone! Check back later or tomorrow for updates! |

Hey, has anyone heard from minie13? Is she on vaca? jfk... if only my recent weight gain were a 5 lb. cell phone!! ;-) Skinny_kitty that totally sucks about your hip! I'm crossing my fingers that all works out well and you heal quickly!!! A quick, last minute decision to run tonight. I'm trying to guage myself for both my mileage and my 5K on Friday. I'm also trying to just run more as a stress outlet. Work is FINALLY winding down, so I'm feeling good! 2.0 for me in the end. |

Congrats, jfk!!! It sounds like you did spectacular! And thank YOU shannymedic! I'm loving all these June challenges. This thread is really inspiring me to do better. All my recent traveling is definitely taking its toll on my stomach... meaning I have quite the nice spare tire. Blech! I'd love to make another June challenge be lose like 20 pounds, but realistically the traveling won't end until July so it'll be next month's goal. Anywho, add 2.9 for me tonight -- a last minute run after a very trying day but worth it none the less. |

6.0 miles tonight. I had the kind of run that left me really happy and excited to be running. It was a river trail run in Valley Forge National Park, and I decided to do a warm-up followed by 4 miles of increasing pace. I'm trying to find new ways to prepare for next week's 5K in the hopes that I will PR. This month's Runner's World has given me a few ideas, but today really made me feel good about next week. My pace was on; my breathing was on. It was a "Hell, yeah!" kind of run. BTW, jfk, I have heard the same thing about side stitches. Usually, I can pinpoint something -- ie. ate too much or am breathing wrong. Often it's the breathing wrong, and more often I'm breathing wrong b/c I'm running too fast... ha ha, maybe because I ate too much. ;-) Either way, I find it gets much better when I slow down, which doesn't help my attitude BUT does take away the side stitch. My June challenges to myself: Hold me to it, everyone! |

10.5 miles for me this week. Welcome shannymedic!! Congrats to lebrowne! That's a great job on your first half-mary!!! Way to go. Congrats to the others for also running this past weekend for the virtual race. I completely forgot all about it while I was away (sorry...). BUT on a positive note, wrm, you were absolutely right!! Due to a freak thing with my laptop, we could only get internet for about 24 hours (which bode well for my DH but I was in sessions all day). I didn't get your post until just now, but the concierge suggested the trail you mentioned. MAN! It was gorgeous! I loved running along Lake Michigan, and instead of running for any reason, I just ran and allowed myself to enjoy everything around me. It was fabulous. The closest thing I have here in Philly is Kelly Drive, but seriously, the Schulykyll River isn't nearly as clean as Lake Michigan. I will say I was no where near the 18 miles but I was pretty happy with the 5.6 I ended up with. I wanted to run again this morning before I left (well, run more in general), but I will say I was totally unprepared for the weather. I brought shorts and tanks... sigh, I never claimed to be a good planner. Well that's enough of Alicia's Travel Log. Hope everyone else enjoyed their weekends as much as I did! EDIT: Jenka - I love the idea of a June Challenge... maybe we should consider a group challenge? Maybe for everyone to shoot for 5 extra miles this month (about a mile per week?) OR run a race you wouldn't normally run? I added a 5K that my DH and I are going to run/walk. JFK -- 53K runners!? Holy cow! Smart to listen to your body. Side stitches are the worst! |

Jenka I was wondering how it was going with the in-laws!!! I thought of you often and hoped you were having a good time. kscout we have all been there. Sometimes if that happens to me, I'll give myself a minimum knowing that once I get started I can keep mentally challenging myself to pick it up and then it becomes fun! So, I may start by saying, all I have to do is run to Store X and back. Once I do that, I think, well I did it in 18 mins, I might as well run another 7 mins. Then, I may say to myself, that's nothing, shoot for a last loop around the park. Etc. Etc. Etc. But, don't worry, on those really crappy days, I run to the gym (a block), get on a stationary bike and then run the block back. I'm glad to hear your workout went great in the end! rk1 glad you're back. I was wondering where you had gone! Super job on the 10K!!! Also, I'm very jealous about going to Hawaii; kudos to you for running while on vaca! TO ANYONE LIVING IN CHICAGO!!! I will be in Chicago this weekend for a conference and need to know where I can run. I'm staying at the Hilton on South Michigan Ave. I'm sure the hotel has a fitness center, but I'd like to run outside when I can. Please let me know via thread or PM. THANKS!!! |

Welcome startreadingandstopeating, phimegaphi, peacelovehominy, and ducklinger! We are happy to have you and the miles you run. Please don't forget that our weeks run from Wed. to Tues. You can post daily or weekly mileage here or PM the RATW userID. A blissful 5.3 miles for me tonight putting my weekly total to *drum roll* a low 7.8. But I needed the time off after Broad St. Tonight I'm trying something the running store employee suggested during non-training weeks -- instead of going out with a mileage goal in mind, I'm going out with a time goal. In other words, tonight my goal was to run for a minimum of 30 mins but no more than 60 mins. I took it very easy, so when I got to 30 mins, I thought, "Well, this is too much fun to stop." Then, when I hit 45 mins, I thought, "Geez, only 15 more minutes and I hit 60, so why stop?" 5.3 miles later I felt very relaxed. Exactly what I needed during end-of-the-school-year wrap-up. I think I'll stick to this strategy until I start training for the fall half-mary's. BTW, has anyone been to Egypt? I'm going this June for work and was hoping for some advice from fellow travelers. Thanks! PS -- The mileage will be updated tomorrow night -- I have to finish work stuff tonight and it'll give everyone a chance to post last minute miles.

I posted this on the Run Around the World Thread, too. I agree, it sounds like a regular, run-of-the-mill stitch. When it happens, go slower and walk if you need to. Please don't push through it. Listen to your body, and in the end your running will be better off. When I get them, I try putting that arm above my head, but really the only thing that ends up helping is running much slower. Also, when you run, go slower overall and don't push at the end. This will help you run for longer amounts of time and farther. When you want to work on going fast, pick a shorter distance than you usually run and run that just a tad faster than you would normally. I found this article for you on the Runners World website: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-380-384--246-0,00.htm l GOOD LUCK! |

2.5 for me tonight. ooo Jenka I was feeling your pain after Broad St and went out and bought new shoes today!! I went with the Brooks Trance again but the new Mizunos were nice (just bulky for the summer). What did you get? I LOVE new shoes, so I hope yours come in super fast. Until then, enjoy the break on the eliptical. matty_h I look forward to reading that article in Runners World. There was a glitch and my May issue just arrived. I lost my April issue (I think unless that never arrived either...) so I need to call and see if I can reorder one. It would be a smart alternative. I'm not sure I can afford it; I'd need to weigh the pros and cons. Thanks for pointing it out!!! thinthought I'm not sure if you want a response here or under the OP but it sounds like a regular, run-of-the-mill stitch. Go slower during your runs and don't push at the end, and see if that helps. Listen to your body, if you have to walk, you have to walk. |

Thanks wrm and jfk! I know you are both right, and I shouldn't be too hard on myself. I looked at my splits afterward and realized I did a classic primadonna and started off way too fast. There were other things that didn't go well that morning, but I'm kicking myself for running really dumb. Live and learn and then move on. 3.4 for me yesterday which puts my weekly total (ending 5/6) at 15.5. |

Congrats, wrm!! That was awesome -- you smashed your old record!! Broad Street today! Man, I felt like crap the entire time. I just couldn't get my breathing right. All in all, I did fine, so I'm trying to not be too hard on myself. It's just a big bummer to fall back as far as I did compared to last year and last week's awesome 5 miler. As I took periodic walk breaks, I kept hearing everyone on the boards who over the past few weeks have been saying, "Listen to your body!" So I did. I still finished with a strong sprint (yay!), but from about the mile 3 marker to the mile 9 marker, I just felt really off. My superstitious self blames it on the bib number (mentally, I prefer bib numbers that have some sort of mathematical relationship -- don't ask. It's weird, I know.). Ok, ok, enough. I still ran the 10 miles in 1:39:17 (chip time) and finished 11386 overall (out of 19,111), 4383 out of 9290 women. While I'm not too happy with it, I know it's a great job -- blah blah. SO ANYWAY, 10.1 miles for me with the warm-up/sprint to find my gear bus. Now I focus on the Fall Half-Mary's!!! |
