I have given up regular beer, and hunt down the 64 calorie beer (MGD).   However, it only really helps if you drink less than 2 a day.

Fitness Treadmill running vs running outside Apr 01 2009

I find it much easier to run on a treadmill than in the neighborhood.    The treadmill must have more give to it than sidewalks or roads.  If you are running on pavement, I'm sure that is part of it.  I started out running in the neighborhood last spring & by summer the humidity was killing me.  Once I joined a gym I was able to really start working on my running goals; I really love knowing how fast I'm going, and how far I've gone.  I've never had shin splints, but my daughter used to get them periodically.

Good for you!  You were able to do it when you were younger, and it just took some time to reclaim it.  It really takes motivation, doesn't it?

Noelle,

Your comments are extremely well framed.  This scares the daylights out of me, too.  It's a constant battle, and if we don't get proactive we'll wake up one morning and find ourselves in 1980's Romania.  For my part, I am actively campaigning for local, state and federal candidates who are prochoice.

It also depends on the temperature of the water.  If you are not in a heated pool, the cold water (later on this year) will make it very bad.  My daughter used to get exercise-induced attacks when the pool got cold in October & November, so we switched to a heated pool.  She quit having the attacks.

I used to get exercise-induced attacks, too.  but I just completed my first 5K.  I didn't know if I could do it or not, but now I feel unstoppable.  It took me 8 months to go from 1/2 mile to 3.1 miles, but I am so much better now I don't ever want to stop running.

The tanning thing concerns me.  I grew up before sunscreen, and we simply fried if we spent too long in the sun.  I have friends of various ages who are fighting melanoma.  Before they were engaged in this battle, they sported magnificent tans (for decades.)  My dermatologist makes sure all of her patients know that the first 20 years she was in practice she averaged one case of melanoma per year.  In the last 10 years she saw over 900 cases.  Be careful with the tanning/vitamin D thing!

If you look at the salt content & the fat content, most prepared dinners deserve the D's & F's they've been given.  I was horrified when I realized that a pot pie is 2 servings at 550 calories/serving.  The best option is to make your own version, because you control what goes into the recipe.  There are some websites that give you "versions" of different restaurant and commercial foods.  When you look at the recipe, you'll see where you can dramatically improve the nutritional value.

Just because it says "lean, healthy, or organic" doesn't mean it is!

Original Post by spirochete:

Oh good Lord don't do this to yourself. You can't pick one body part and analyze it to death on its own. People with my thigh and hip measurements wear several sizes smaller than I do because I have the dreaded apple shape and nothing fits me right. I do mean several, not just like one size smaller.

You're not doing anything wrong other than obsessing over nothing, so don't do that to yourself.

I was wondering about that!  I'm not an apple, I'm not a pear.  I am in search of a waistline.  Last week some cc'ers were talking about having 22" thighs & fitting into a size 4...I sure couldn't fit into my teenagers' clothes.

Weight Loss Any low calorie high calcium foods out there???? Jul 09 2008

Skim milk seems to have more calcium for fewer calories than anything else I have found. I always have a gallon in the house. I buy half & half for my cats and use skim milk & lowfat, sugar-free creamer in my coffee.

The other possibility might be plain, unsweetened, low fat yogurt (which is also good for the bacteria).

Every calcium supplement I have tried (and that would be all of them) give me incredible gastrointestinal difficulties. So I just rely on dietary calcium & check it everyday when I do the nutrition analysis.

Pregnancy & Parenting Has anyone tried to lose weight before first pregnancy to prepare for baby weight gain? Jul 02 2008

If you are eating well now, as long as you don't have real problems, you should not gain an extreme amount of weight during your pregnancy.  My first pregnancy I gained well over 40 pounds.  When I was done nursing I had to go on a 1200 calorie a day diet for 6 months to lose the last 20 pounds.  By the time I did it, I had learned a whole new way of eating.  So, during the 2nd pregnancy I only gained 22 lbs.  By the time I stopped nursing daughter #2, half of it was gone.  So, why am I here?  (Oh, yes, I got distracted while chasing children and gained the weight back...)  I've just about reorganized my eating habits now.

If you haven't already discovered it, use the tool that gives the nutritional breakdown on your food log.   If you hit "analysis" and let your cursor hesitate over the date, it will tell you how you are doing on daily percentages in your diet.  Look at your % cholesterol and try to keep it below 50% of what it says you can have.  The lower you can keep it, the better.   Fatty meats, regular cheeses & eggs will shoot you over the 300 mg really fast.  While you are at it, look at the % for salt, calcium, iron, and sugars.  That will help you learn how to choose good foods and balance your diet.  Don't worry so much about the total fats or sugars (there are sneak sugars everywhere), and some of the fats (like the unsaturated ones you get from nuts) are really quite good for you.

Weight Loss Is increased bone density slowing my weight loss? May 31 2008
23:02 (UTC)

I would not expect to see an increase in bone density in just 3 months.  It takes a long time to show results.  My sister was incredibly pleased with herself when she managed to increase her bone density by 4% in a year.  In fact, it was a multi-year process; first they had to stop the bone loss (which took about a year) and then they were able to start redepositing. In addition to the drug therapies and diet modification, she added walking on a treadmill (an hour a day) with weights.  Five years into this, she looks like a million bucks; she peeled off 15 pounds, has amazing arms & legs, and is in the best shape she's been in since her college years.

I would agree that it is far more likely to be muscle mass than  bone mass.

Other people are doing superbly.  I have had to realize that every salty snack is paid for in water weight that takes me days to wipe out.  If you clean all junk food out of your diet and keep you calorie count down, you might be able to do it.  I'm now working on keeping it at 1300 per day, with at least a 500 calorie deficit.  We'll see if that works.

Losing weight when you're sick is easy, but it can put you in a tailspin and slow recovery.  This is supposed to be about healthy weight loss, so I'm not going there!

I've been trying to lose 18 pounds for the last 5 years.  I took off 5 lbs. in 4 months, only to gain  4.5 them back on Mother's Day weekend.  (I swear; it was two days with some tortilla chips and 1 lousy piece of cheesecake!)   Now I'm back on the wagon & have taken 3.5 back off.  (So, let's see...no chips of any type.  No salty snacks.  No CAKE of any type!)  sheesh!
