Friends - thank you for the lovely replies! You are so kind.

I agree - the first step is not being angry at myself or feeling guilty. That only makes us feel worse. I need to see this is a piece of the bigger picture and go after happiness in it's truest form.

Need to spend more time exercising and reading, and less time being angst-filled, stressing out, and drinking/socializing.

Now that summer is here, I plan to spend a lot of time outside. That should help.

Cheers,

H

I love them!

Crunchy little nuggets of branny-goodness.

Great on yogourt or cottage cheese, or mixed with another cereal.

I definitely need to do 6 lbs... actually 10, but I'm aiming for 4 or 5.

Currently averaging 125, and want to be 115. (I was 112 last year and felt amazing)

Breakfast: 1/2 pear, diced w/ 1/2 cup plain yogourt and 1/3 cup all bran buds

Snack: 3 pieces Ryvita crispbread w/ 2 tbsp almond butter

Lunch: Wrap and veggies/fruit (working lunch)

Snack: 1/2 grapefruit

Dinner: TBD, however likely soup and a salad.

Sorry! I'm silly!

I just realized I meant 20% of my diet from Protein.

What I've noticed is that my breakdown is simelar to

20 - 25% protein

15-20% fat

60% carbs

Is this good/bad/ugly?

I worry about the carbs being too high but realistically 75% of them are from veegtables...

Also, re breakfast... Usually I have one breakfast at 6, and my snack at 9-10 is usually a second breakfast. Would you still say I should have a bigger one at 6?

I was the happiest person in the world when I was 112 - 115 lbs. I was toned, fit, and felt great. My clothes fit perfectly, my face was trimmer... with the extra 10 lbs, I am no longer toned, I have a muffin top, and chipmunk cheeks.

I need to lose them not for my health, or for any other reason but to get my self esteem back :(

Simelar to clairelaines -

In a small glass dish place a chopped apple and 1/2 cup berries of your choice, add a tsp of cinnamon and 1/2 cup apple juice.

Top with rolled oats, and a bit more cinnamon or nutmeg.

Bake uptil crisp on top.

This is a GREAT way to make an apple-berry crisp for 2.

Wow ladies - thank you for ALL of the wonderful advice. It's a nice refresher to remind us all how easy it CAN be when we're determined.

My goals:

  • I'm aiming to tackle the gym 3 mornings a week (mon-wed-fri) at 5:30 (I'm a morning person) 30-40 mins cardio and either a circuit or bosu training.
  • Jillian Michaels 30-day shread video at least 4 days a week (off days) and any other days I can.
  • Pack a cooler lunch every day. Lots of veggies/protein for the day and a few whole grain carbs.
  • Eat fibre - lots!
  • Light suppers - soup & salad or protein and salad.
  • Stay away from crap food and experiment with vegetarian food.
  • Take the stairs/walks at lunch if possible.
  • Avoid coffee - white tea instead.

I want these 15 lbs gone by the end of March!

I'm in pretty near the same situation as Alexandra - 117 - 118 (5'3") and want to get down to 110. Perhaps we can all help eachother find our 'happy place' in the 110-119 range. I was 112 two months ago and I'm desperately trying to get back there.

The problem with these big holiday meals, in my opinion, isn't necessarily the sitting down for dinner part, it's the 'extras':

The nacho dip or appetizers while everyone sits around and socializes prior.

The 'gravy'

The alcohol - wine, beer, etc that is offered because someone is hosting

The dessert

What I tend to forget is that it's not actually rude to say no to these things. White meat roasted turkey is EXCELLENT for you. Lots of people do sweet potatoes for sides. Vegetables are always on the side. Be a great guest and bring a nice big spinach salad with fruit and light feta. Amaze everyone with your homemade balsamic vinaigrette. Enjoy your meal by piling it half full of veggies you love, 1/4 with some white breast meat, and throw a starchy carb into the mix for a 500 - 700 calorie meal, depending on how overboard you go.

If you're cooking, try:

A delicious soup as a starter (forget munchies!) - Try Cauliflower & Leek

Baked sweet potato and squash with earthy spices like nutmeg and ginger, as opposed to moms 'mashed with butter and sugar variety'.

Turkey breasts instead of the whole bird.

Forget gravy - top with a homemade cranberry sauce - if you want to avoid sugar, simmer cranberries 'straight up', blend in some sweet peaches, a bit of honey and garnish with some parsley or chives.

Blanched green and yellow beans with water chestnuts and carrots.

Salads - julienne the veggies and make it fancy-like.

and... if you must do dessert... just make sure it's sensible. Scour CC for any great dessert recipe, or grill / bake fruit and top with a granola crumble and some whipped topping, frozen lot-fat yogourt and a fruit coulis. Beautiful plated healthy desserts are received soooooooooo favourably just because of the presentation. Puts full-fat pumpkin pie to shame any day.

Weight Loss nutrient breakdowns - a bit confused! (Need to find balance on 1200/day) Oct 09 2008

I would love to hear from someone in the nutrition field or someone who knows what is 'optimum' for weight loss. I'm one of those people who just need to break the cycle, make healthy eating a LIFESTYLE not a diet, and eat the right foods. I need to lose 5 - 10 lbs but I think it's very very possible given the right breakdowns and some self-control when it comes to restaurants/alcohol/partying.

Any more thoughts re: the IDEAL breakdown?

The things I believe to be true:

  • 30g fibre is good, try to stay away from processed forms though...
  • 50-25-25 or 50-30-20 carb-fat-protein ratio is good,
  • 1 - 2 tsp of flax oil a day is good to help with regularity,
  • vegetables are good - eat lots - esp dark ones w/ antioxidants
  • fruit is good in moderation,
  • lean lean lean protein is good,
  • complex carbs are good but should be restricted - mainly get carbs from veggies,

This is all I know, and I remain confused about what is ideal.

My hands down fave is Nutz over Chocolate, however I don't know whether I enjoy it more than any other 180 mini-meal... It is convenient though for when I do not have time to grab a lunch or before the gym if I know supper won't be until later... problem is, I love them so much, I could eat them al.lllll the time.

Absolutely!

Going vegetarian / vegan is something I've also been very seriously considering and I already have my Monday meal planned out which is a tofu & veggie dish.

I don't know if I can ever give up dairy completely, that's the only thing holding me back from veg vs. vegan.

Lets keep in touch! See if we can't get rid of this CRAP together ! ;)

Health & Support I wake up not feeling hungry. Should I still eat breakfast? Aug 28 2008

I agree about the breakfast thing. I am definitely not hungry this am (late dinner) but I see breakfast as a way of pushing out lunch and avoidance of snacking. If I didn't have something at 7-8am, I'd want something at 10 and it would be a donut or cookie with my coffee!

Original Post by lalabanana:

I would aim to eat something within an hour of waking. Make sure you get some protein, carbs and fibre if you can, as all of these will help you feel full for longer.

I should add, though, that starvation mode does not occur overnight, but what mdrat said about "breaking fast" is true.

Thanks to everyone who posted but who wasn't judgemental - you are all truly right in your comments that 'happiness' is often looked for in some kind of exerior idea of 'perfection', when indeed there is probably something else altogether fueling it.

I'm not sure what exactly it is that makes me so disatisfied but I will take steps to find out what it is. I know some is due in part to a low B12 deficiency I've had on-again, off-again for quite some time (I have recently invested in some supplements, so that should help get me on track) and there is no doubt some guilt going on in my head re: some decisions I've made in my past that every now and again creep up and haunt me. Coming to peace with those things, and taking better care of my health should inevitably help to some extent.

Also - to many points - exercise and fitness are both mood boosters AND probably what I need to LOVE my body. Was at the beach yesterday and husband pointed out that all of the girls I 'oogled' at were bigger than I was (sometimes 5 - 6 sizes bigger!!), however they were tanned and appeared more toned. Just goes to show how skewed body image is sometimes. I don't have the time, the complexion, or the disregard necessary for my skin that tanning requires, therefore toning up the good, hard, natural way is in order.

Thank you all for your overwhelming love and support.

- Canned tomatoes  (Although recently I've had a hate-on for them because I realized how much sodium were in the bloody things - need to find an alternate)

- Oatmeal - Bob's Red Mill is the best!

- Raw Almonds - when on sale I buy a big package!

- Couscous / Quinoa / Lentils / Chickpeas (dry)

- Black Beans / Chickpeas (canned)

- Cottage Cheese Cups (Fat Free - again, until I noticed the sodium - need to find the less salt variety - I'm bummed about it)

- Scallops, Shrimp, Haddock, Salmon and Talapia.

- Whole Wheat Pitas (great for pita pizzas or for sandwiches.

- Weight Watchers or Bodywise Bread, Bagels,  and Hamburger Buns

- Mushrooms, I buy HUGE packages - love em!

- Salsa, Fat Free Sour Cream, and Tzatziki - my favorite spreads!

Ah well... I keep searching.

Foods How in the world do you eat all those veggies?? Aug 20 2008

I made a great zucchini bake last night that left hubby and I scraping the dish.

Sliced up 2 large zucchinis and layered them in a baking dish with some onions and a half and half mixture of organic pasta sauce and diced tomatoes (think layering like lasagna), and topped with a bit of crumbled feta. Bake, uncovered about 20-30 minutes and you've got a very low cal (tomatos and zucchini!) dish to have as a side to lean protein. I served this with a 6oz portion of baked haddock for a 350-400 cal dinner.

The only problem with the above is the sodium in canned / processed tomato sauces. I'm going to make a ton of my own once local garden tomatoes get into season and freeze it. Also need to try to find a grocery store brand thats not too bad - even my pizza sauce is laden with it! Damn sodium.

Ugh - I'm driving myself mad with this. Just ate 1/4 tub of ice cream with friends and decided that that's IT. A new start tomorrow.

Tomorrow I will:

  • Go to my boot camp class and work my freakin' butt off.
  • Eat healthy - egg whites with spinach and mushrooms for breakfast, toast for a snack, veggie sandwich and a bit of soup for lunch, yogourt for a snack, and a healthy dinner.
  • Walk at lunch - just get out and DO SOMETHING. Clear my head so I don't eat a pile of chocolate in the afternoon.
  • Drink 10 glasses of water to get rid of this BLOAT. I'll put a post-it on my computer monitor with checkboxes to remind me.
  • Wake up early enough to feel and look beautiful going to work. Good hair gives me confidence.
  • Watch that sodium. Seriously. 1000mg a day should be do-able w/ the right choices.

Thursday - I'm getting a new outfit to work out in. It'll make me feel awesome and want to go.

How do you guys motivate yourself to 'carry on' once you feel you've disapointed yourself?

Weight Loss 5'2''ers what size are you? Aug 14 2008

I'm 5'2" (and a HALF) and am a size 1-2 usually @ 112lbs. Jeans are a 26-27 depending on the percentage of stretch / make / material. I'm a XS on top usually, or a S but my bum is naturally curvy.

A year or so ago I was 120 and a size 4.

A year before that I was 125 and a size 6.

I've always had to get every pair of pants I buy hemmed - I always factor $10 - 12 bucks into the price I pay!

Weight Loss What do YOU do to save those little extra calories? Aug 14 2008
11:18 (UTC)
16
  • Egg whites instead of eggs
  • Lemon juice in my water instead of other kinds of high-sugar juices
  • 'Vegetarian Day' 3 - 4 times a week. Portabello mushrooms, grilled as a substitute for beef or chicken in just about everything. It's my tofu! lol. Try em in quesadillas, wraps, enchidadas, on burgers instead of patties, etc.
  • Becel 0 calorie spray or NOTHING in pans for saute-ing. low-sodium chicken broth if I need to soften veggies.
  • Instead of a full serving of rice / grains - prepare 1/2 of what you usually would than bulk it up with diced zucchini, tomato, celery, mushrooms, etc to make a nice medley but cut way back on carbs. (and get more veggies!)
  • No Sugar Added fruit Jam or spread stirred into in oatmeal instead of sugar or molasses or instead of throwing in a whole fruit which I usually do. (nothing wrong with fruit, just have to stay under my cals so I'll save it for a snack on it's own.
  • A 1/2 a toasted whole wheat pita, broken up into chips, served with a 1/3 cup salsa or 2 tbsp tzatziki for dipping - great 100 cal alternative to a bag of chips or nachos.
  • Don't eat out as much - have friends in for dinner, so you can cook. Tomorrow night, friends are coming for spinach blueberry salad with stuffed tomatoes and baked chicken w/ mango salsa. Not bad, eh. It'll be a 400-cal meal for those who don't dip in to the bread basket.
Maintaining 5'2 in fluctuating between 116-118 Aug 12 2008
17:23 (UTC)
1

Hey guys - I just discouvered this thread as I'm realizing that pretty soon it is going to be time to maintain, not lose. I'm currently fluctuating between 112 - 115 and really dream of being 105 - 110. The problem is, at 5'3", I still look flabby and have dimple bum/thigh. Right now, I'm getting off of a week-long vacation where I did nothing and ate everything so I am closer to 115 and hate myself.

Like most of you, I'd be thrilled to be a toned, maintained, 110lbs.

I'm eating a pretty steady 1200 cals/day right now (20% fat/30% protein/50% carbs - mostly from vegetables - 2 - 3 servings of whole grains also), extra if I do intense exercise or hiking, etc. Haven't been doing much exercise, besides power walking, however I've just recently started boot camp (45 mins) for 3x/week and jogs on 3 other days with crunches... we'll see what that does.

Thinking about something like Hydroxycut or Ever Cleanse to try and shead the last few, but I already have ED-like behavior / thoughts and am afraid it might trigger something worse.

Any suggestions?

Fitness bootcamp Aug 12 2008
13:56 (UTC)

I'm doing a great one right now - 45 mins 3x/week. It's not as 'boot campy' as some I've read about but it's really great. Mainly consists of plyometrics, core exercises, agility, endurance exercises, etc.

I LOVE IT!

The one thing I can't help but comment on is the instructor. He's not really 'friendly' at all, which is weird, but he's great. I think by his not being a 'friend' that he gets better results out of us.
