Weight Loss How can I figure out the mental problem? (I'm not crazy though!!!) Jan 07 2008

Original Post by upbeatsweet:

i totally know what you mean. changing your mentality about food is at least half the battle. i used to think that every time i passed up on food, i was missing out on something wonderful. and i'd always feel bad about leaving food on my plate. here are some ways i've found to get around it:

 - sometimes, all you might want is a taste. so instead of eating an entire piece of cake (or a couple of cookies), just take a few bites and savour it. and say 'okay, now i know what it tastes like, it was delicious, and put it back'

 - eat off of smaller plates with smaller utensils! it's a neat little trick, but it works.

- start looking at healthy food with a shark's eye. now, whenever i see eggplant, i almost start salivating lol.

- distract yourself. if you know that you'll eat at home, go hang out with your friends, or shower, or read a book. sometimes, you just need to stop thinking about food.

- at restaurants, if you leave half your portion, you not only save on calories then, but you also save on the extra calories you would've had later for another meal (plus, you can have the same delicious meal twice). also, an awesome trick at restaurants is to split a meal, cheaper and lighter.

- just remember that you can always not eat. if you find yourself wandering towards the kitchen, ask yourself if maybe you're thirsty instead. a lot of times, we crave salty food when we're dehydrated or stressed.

- sometimes, i just chew gum because i want to chew on something!

it's soooo hard to reshape your ideas about food, but if i can do, you can too. it takes a lot of willpower, and you have to get to know yourself, but you have plenty of time to do it! you should always keep healthy snacks around to curb the cravings. and don't deny yourself too much, because that's what'll get ya.

and one more thing to remember: you don't HAVE to eat anything. it's okay to say no, and it gives you self-empowerment. when a friend offers you a bite, just politely refuse and see how that feels. the more you do it, the better you'll get at it. you can do it!

All that there is really, really good advice. Thanks! I'm trying so hard to change my mentality towards food - it's really, really hard and every time I think I'm making progress I just relapse and remember how much I love it. But all those things will help.

Wannabehot - Chop chop is right, it seems to me you know why you won't let yourself lose weight. Talk to a better shrink or someone else you trust about how you see yourself. Think about what it is you'd have to face if you were thin. :) I hope you work through it and become the person you want to be.

Weight Loss 2008 New Years Resolution(s)? Jan 03 2008

I don't usually make New Year's resolutions, but this year I have, and I really want to stick to them.

1) Get noticeably slimmer by July. Ideally, down to 140-150.

2) Not get discouraged if I don't see instant results, or if I fall off the wagon - persevere, dust myself off and climb back on again.

3) Make myself exercise much, much more. Go for a run at least every other day.

4) Get over my irrational fear and embarrassment of exercising in front of people. Someone's going to see me at some point, and I've got to stop being ashamed of trying to lose weight, despite my complete lack of fitness and disgusting thighs.

Indoctrinate it with some made-up religion, like the Order of the Slightly Dishevelled Doormice, and persuade it that in order to reach the Great Cheesy Ironing Board in the sky, it must throw itself under a truck.

Or, stick a note to it saying 'Star Trek is Rubbish' and throw it into the middle of a trekkie convention.

Weight Loss love food? then eat less!!! overeaters... Jan 03 2008

I love food, I really do, I think it's one of the best things in the world. When I used to overeat I never felt like I wasn't appreciating it - it was great, I loved it. But maybe I haven't been dieting for long enough, and one day I'll appreciate it even more.

What I'm trying to do now is tell myself to only eat things that are going to be really, really worth it. Like, if I'm mooching around looking for a snack, I ask myself: Is that going to be delicious? Or are you just eating it out of boredom, or habit? And usually, it's exactly that, and I either don't eat it, or if I'm actually hungry, take the extra time to make myself something that's really good. Well, I'm trying, anyway. :P

Anyway hi everyone, I'm new :)
