Weight Loss MY HUSBAND'S LOVING THE ZONE DIET - and he's finally starting to lose! Jul 31 2009
22:05 (UTC)

Hi - I got an e-mail today in my private in-box at home asking me about the Zone diet.  I'd completely forgotten about this post - it's been so long ago.........

Yes, my husband has enjoyed great benefits and I see the other people who've commented have done an excellent job sharing their experiences which really adds to the information that others might also seek.

I think the thing that happens is partly due to the commitment to lose weight; you put out of your mind, anything that will sabotage that effort, and he said he just told himself he only 'liked' the foods recommended on this diet, and simply put the rest of the foods he used to eat, out of his thought-process.

Since that time, I've realize that we reallly should look at food as a source of energy and nutrition; to sustain life.  If we start looking at it as a pleasure-source without looking at that 'pleasure' and the damage it might do to our health, then we're making a mistake.

Too many people tend to 'celebrate life' with food and drink; a new promotion at work - some type of special day in their lives, etc., and of course with all the media advertising and restaurant fliers that end up in our mail box, I'm sure the temptation to suddenly go off the 'wagon', is out there and all around us.

There are a myriad of cooking shows that 'tempt us'.  We watch only those programs that stress frugal and healthy eating - balancing the diet.

I also think we have too many celebrities being paid to promote a certain diet program; I shy away from those ads, and I don't think I've ever seen the Zone diet on national television - if so, then I've missed those ads.

I think the amazing thing is when you eat the really right foods, you will feel that energy boost and your skin will glow as mine still does at the age of 67.  My husband is 74; his hair is thick; his skin supple and no signs of age spots, and his entire body shows the look of 'health'.

I quit coming because of the advertising.  It makes me sick to deal with the Splenda advertising; gets in the way of my posts and reading.

So, from now on - every 3 months I'll check in; it's all I can take with all the junk on the side-bars..........

Weight Gain Theme parks and weight gain - how to calculate?! Jul 31 2008
13:24 (UTC)
11

I've been taking my own lunches to theme parks since 1967, and I don' care what anyone thinks.  It's my body; I have to eat certain foods that aren't available at most public parks, and I'm not going to upset my system or ruin my day, by eating junk food.

Let your family eat what they want to (and can), and you can probably buy a drink that is good for you - then enjoy your own lunch.

Remind your friends/family, that Gloria Swanson and Greta Garbo (2 very well respected movie actresses of long ago), as well as Kathryn Hepburn (also highly regarded as an actress), ALL MADE IT PUBLIC, that they 'brown-bagged' it most of the time, because of their commitment to good food - keeping slender, and not putting their body through some type of 'torture' just to please their friends.  I remember 2 or 3 interviews (as well as having read their books), where they claimed they not only wanted to control calories and nutrition, but that they knew if they prepared it, it was free from germs and they wouldnt get sick from eating what someone else prepared commercially.

So, think of your body as being the most important - no matter where you go; fine restaurant or amusement park, you want to focus on your health and well-being.

As a piece of information:  Late April our family attended a wedding in the Grand Canyon area.  3 of us got food poisoning - missed the wedding; ended up in the emergency section of a Flagstaff hospital, and spent a lot of money to recover for the next 5 days, in a hotel room.  No one questioned the foods we ate; we all 'chowed down', and we paid the price for a careless cook or contaminated food.

When I feel hungry, I drink cold tomato juice and eat a couple pieces of celery.  It goes away for at least 4 hours; very low in calories.

I also make up cucumber and celery in the blender with apple juice (just enough to make it nice and thick).  Add a little celery seed; a tad bit of kosher salt, and it also holds me for about 4 hours (in fact I'm drinking some right now - actually not while I'm typing, but you get the idea).  Try this....

That's why they call it the TERRIBLE TWOS...but I never had any of it with my 5 children.

I know a few of my grand-kids got a bit un-ruly; it only takes a big hug; a kiss, and a time to calm them - try music and dancing with them...it winds them down.

After you dance, a bit of apple juice - take a photo of them; have them smile, and they just get going in such a sweet way again.

Weight Loss thoughts on Weight Watchers vs. CC? May 17 2008

Original Post by j-snyder:

Advantages to CC:  It's free, it's slightly more accurate, and it promotes really knowing what you are doing.

Advantages to WW:  It's already all been figured out, so you don't have to spend as much time thinking about how it's working.  You can just mindfully follow their guidelines, and it works just as well.

It just depends on your personality type.  One of my best girlfriends is doing WW, and doing great.  But I'm controlling organized type personality, and she's not.  She wants it taken care of for her, and I want to do it all myself.  So she's willing to shell out a little money for their system, and I'm willing to do the work and use this free website :)  We both lose weight, we both win :)

I liked this post - so positive.  I've never had a weight problem; my husband does.  He's done both WW and CC - because he won't follow either of the guidelines and instructions, he doesn't achieve what he'd like to (and needs to).

So, free or not - eating right; sticking to the guidelines wherever you find them (and there are so many sites like this that are free), is KEY to anyone achieving their goals.

I also like the ZONE diet; I like the PRITIKIN diet - the PORTFOLIO diet, and the website called SPARK.  Each and every one of these that are all free (including one on the MAYO CLINIC WEBSITE) advocate sound eating and give you all the tools and 'clues' to success.........

I do agree that the personality has much to do with it; I'm a controlling person as well, which is why I've controlled my weight for 65 years, and still weigh what I did at 16 years old (my driver's license is my best guide - the weight never changes, only my age.....).

Since you're in no way 'fat', this link still might appeal to you because it discusses 'weight' - and some of the key influences in our lives, that contribute to weight (being over, under, or maintaining an ideal weight).

What's helpful is there is dialog - just turn your speaker up, and 'relax' while you are told about the social influences that (in part) have contributed to this trend toward excess weight which we all know is 'rampant' (according to all the documentaries and nightly news-casts we get in Las Vegas).

Not ever having to deal with a personal weight issue, but trying to help my husband adjust his weight (per his doctor's request), is what caused me to ever seek out the type of information that now causes me to keep more current on the causes of weight gain; the ill effects from it, and the methods people use to return to an ideal weight and healthy eating program.

Again, you're not one of those with a major weight problem; you're taking clear and positive steps to make certain your health is optimized, so you'll want this only as an FYI I'm sure.  http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1646997,00.html

Summer 'sums it up'....

The good thing is if you've got less than 10 pounds to lose, you're almost in that 'vanity-pound' class (unless you're super short; tiny-boned, etc.).

I notice the advertising at the bottom of the page talks about colon-cleansing; this is something quite different, and it can easily rid a person of several pounds because of the impacted fecal-matter.

There are numerous videos; some with well-known people, discussing the virtues of this cleansing process.  Usually it takes a few visits to really make a difference; normally no less than $300 per session, so more often people with other problems (such as constipation and frequent illness), spend that type of money.  Excessive use of medications can build up in the intestines; the writer doesn't mention if there's been any type of use, and this can also add 'weight gain' - you can 'Google' this, and find thousands of commentaries about just how much weight a person gains on certain prescription drugs.

One of the moderators here discussed gaining about 25# just on a certain medication - I believe it's in the archives somewhere, so one never knows just what more can be done to truly bring the weight down to where it reflects a clear elimination of 'fat only'......

http://www.thewolfeclinic.com/newsletter/news letter0205.html is probably one of the better links which is why I mentioned in my journal 2 months ago, why I've eaten 'raw' for about 40 of my 65 years.  It's one of the number of concepts that not only my 3 current doctors follow, but one of the doctor's that encouraged me in this direction in 1998.  I think it's an interesting and helpful read for this person who started this post.

Probably one of the better links on fasting, is http://www.herbdatanz.com/fasting.htm

Enjoy.

http://superchargeme.blip.tv/#382449 - good information for you first-off....

Next:  I've never been over-weight; going on 66 years old.

Next:  My own MEDICAL DOCTOR recommends a fast of up to 10 days; it cleanses the body; whether you lose actual 'fat' - or just all that 'bloat' and toxic build-up, you feel great!

Next:  Before man became a 'meat-eater', man was on a diet of 'very little' - water; herbs - 'plant-life'; whatever 'man' could muster up - fasting was a way of life aka 'starving'..........  Man survived; man over-eats - man is more often just lacking in WATER, than in food.......

We are primarily 'water' - we NEED water; we feel hungry when we are actually 'thirsty'...........

The food industry doesn't make much money on 'water' - or anything that is 'simple and pure' - so, we get told a bunch of different 'stories'.

The diet industry wants to make money - they tell us 'another story'.

The person with the 'soft diet' (as I've been on because I had 7 teeth extracted) is 'dead-on'....we simply don't need the types of foods we tend to eat in this day and age.  There's a difference between 'needing' and WANTING; we have many fine supplements that can allow us to minimize the 'solids' we take in (and then we end up taking colonics to get rid of the junk that builds up in the colon, etc.).

My doctor says 'death begins in the colon' - a soft diet; a periodic 'fast' (even in the Bible and other religious books, it demands fasting), minimizes that risk of getting disease; cancer - diabetes, heart problems, etc.

In the last 10 years, I've had 4 bouts with food poisoning - all from 'restaurants' - some pretty 'fancy'.  Each time, the doctor insisted I 'fast' - cleanse, and rest.........

When you start eating 'full-time', stay with raw foods (I do) - strive for at least 85% of the foods you eat, to be 'raw' - this means you end up with fruits and vegetables as the pyramid suggests is most desirable........

Nature provides; raw foods start out 'natural' and very 'raw' - that means we eat 'raw' (man didn't invent fire until many years after man was doing just fine on this planet).  I steam what I don't eat raw; I don't eat meat - fish once a week; cottage cheese and yogurt have natural bacteria that is HEALTHY for your body - the by-product of the 'cow' - perfect food from a creature that eats grasses and grains.....

It's all logical even if it's not all gourmet or 'vogue' - I think you'll do fine, and probably won't gain anything but a bit of water - water that is held to protect your tissues; organs, etc.

My doctor fasts 10 days a month; he's trim - bright-eyed; healthy, and full of energy; I know many who are - we all swear by this, and some of us are into our 80's.

Just clearing the notices of postings - all interesting; like visiting, but have to clear these notices of 'post reply', because my husband is trying to keep the 'inbox' freed-up.  I put a block on them, but they wind up in the deleted section; and with all the other mail that is blocked, now he's complaining I need to try to reduce that (and how....???).

Anyway - nice to read the latest about all of you - that lady with the 1200/1500/1700 is dead-on the money; when you've got a doctor handling things, you'll get a better handle on what you need to do.

These web-sites are great, but doctors are the ones that take care of you on an individual basis, and after my tests of years ago (thyroid problem), I could never have found out the entire answer, had I relied on anyone but my doctor.

You all have a great mom's day when it arrives; we're in the 90's - the Canyon is in the low 70's...loving it.  Now, I hope that removing the e-mail notification 'reply', will end that mail coming in.

After seeing 5 replies that look far superior to my great grandson's lunch menu, I can see clearly that any school could benefit from reading these entries, and reorganizing their menu program accordingly.

I always preferred to make a whole-wheat (now you can get 12-grain easily) bread sandwich; fresh tomato, avocado, sprouts - sunflower seeds (seeded of course) sprinkled on with sliced radishes, and a spread of cream cheese to hold the darned thing together.  If you eat meat, I'd pick a chicken breast that had been roasted or grilled.

I always took one cup of grapes; one cup of sliced carrots, one cup of celery, and an apple - all easy to fit into a nice tote, and all taste great.

I love fresh pineapple; would 'slice it as thin' as I could; put that as part of another sandwich (cream cheese spread is great with this); then a slice of chilled ham that I'd baked; adding some romaine lettuce and I liked a few sliced green olives mixed into the cream cheese spread for this one.

Lettuce and tomato sandwiches are great; I pack the lettuce and tomato in one little zip bag, and put the sandwich 'together' before I eat it so it doesn't get soggy.  I like a thin layer of cream cheese; then sliced avocado - add the tomato and lettuce, and if you like bacon, you can make that up in 'batches' - freeze, and carry that in a baggy (separately); it defrosts by the time you're ready to eat it.  I never went without my grapes, apple, and veggies no matter what else I put in my lunch.

Containers of yogurt for dessert - even at room temperature, they're fine since yogurt is 'created' by taking milk and letting it stand in a warm place to start with.  I like to mix 1/4 cup of yogurt and 1/4 cup of cottage cheese together; a bit of fresh fruit mixed in - it's wonderful.

I know I have several web-sites; blogs, and other places where my profile is (like here) subject to a 'peek', so I always use something other than my own photo for privacy.

I should mention the pretty 'rock' that's painted like the flag - some small children in our complex did this as a tribute to some people serving in Iraq - I took several photos, and it was featured in our local newsletter.  If you've got something like this that you'd like to use, you can choose that for posting.

I believe your gallery can be set to be 'safe' from a search engine; even from others on this site, if you choose only to have your friends view your journals and profile.  I'm not 100% sure, but I think that's what I was told when I first joined.

Weight Loss how often do YOU eat? Mar 29 2008

I like eating two meals - 10:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.  A snack around 9:00 p.m.

I love lots of water; tomato and red grapefruit juice in between - probably 6 times a day.  This works best for me because I get so tired if I eat when I get up; seem to 'bog down' - my cold water and some juice gets me fired up.

Foods man snacks Mar 29 2008

My husband likes:  Grapes, Cold Chicken Breast, Cubes of Sharp Cheddar Cheese, Celery, Carrots, Wal-Mart's Hawaiian Snax (it consists of banana chips; pineapple, mango, nuts, and raisins).  He loves peanut butter and soda crackers, but limits himself on these to 5 crackers with a dab of peanut butter and plops a slice of banana on each one (this is about 1/4 of a banana sliced).

He often replaces the chicken breast (these are usually roasted), with slices of ham that I've baked.  If he eats too much of this, we call it a 'meal', and not a snack.

Weight Loss Cooking vegetables Mar 28 2008
23:43 (UTC)

I eat most of my vegetables raw since that's the focus of my diet (veggie and raw); however when I do cook them I either steam them or roast them with the meat/poultry my husband likes.  My husband wants his meat; at least I've kept him to poultry/fish, or pork-loin (rarely do we buy red meats any more).

I sleep better; have greater energy when I eat 90% vegetarian - my skin is always brighter as well.

I like to make deviled eggs, so I often put the eggs in my double-boiler or steamer unit; then vegetables go into the top section - gets 2 things done at once.

I also love those bags for steaming - you can rinse and re-use to save money and avoid putting them into the 'trash' too often.

When/if I boil any vegetable, I save the liquid - chill it and mix with my Vegetable Juice in the morning.  You can also save it and use it for part of your base for soups.

Foods Please can anyone help. How many calories are oven roasted potatoes? Mar 22 2008
    16:12 (UTC)
    2

If you roast the potatoes @ 450 - use PAM (the spray), you'll have very little adjustment to make for any 'fat or oil' absorption.

If you partially cover your potatoes during the roasting process (foil), you'll utilize a bit of 'steam' to cook/roast the potatoes, and this requires even LESS fat.

I use NO fat; roast the potatoes WHOLE - cover (partially) with foil, and put 1/4 of a cup of ginger ale in the bottom of the roasting pan to create moisture and impart a 'hint' of ginger flavor.  I sprinkle the 'taters' with basil and thyme - when they're done after about 60 minutes (depending on how many I roast at a time), I don't use any butter because they're just yummy.

I prefer using red potatoes; not removing the skins (skins have good nutrition).

I also microwave these same red potatoes; same seasoning - ginger ale, etc., but I only have to do them for about 5 minutes; 3 minutes - rotate and turn over the potatoes, and finish for 2 more minutes (I use about 5 when I do it this way - any more than that, might require too much time - could dry out the potatoes).  Diane
