Margaret, I do hike alone sometimes, if no one else wants to go.  But if I do, I stick to popular trails where I am sure to run into someone else.  Usually a group of us hike together.  I do want to try a solo overnight backpack trip next year.

Your soup sounds very nice.  Stay on track and the 7 pounds will be gone very soon because it is mostly water.  I saw some photos of the floods you are having -- very nasty :(

BEB, my right knee had a small injury almost 20 years ago. I had arthroscopic surgery at that time, which did help, but it has never bent as far as my left knee.  It has been okay up until I over-bent it in October by catching my toe in a rock as I was coming down a trail.

I think you should have your Dad and Maggie over.  Getting ready will keep you busy.  If you just change your outlook on it, you will enjoy it!  And you will be too busy to eat from boredom.  But don't spend more than you have to spend -- you don't have to do a fancy Christmas - they will understand.

Everyone, remember that you don't need to eat a lot this week.  All of the food is available year-round and you can have it any day of the year.  No need to eat it all on the same day Smile

Laura, yes, it is my right knee.  It has been weaker than my left for almost 20 years, since the arthoscopic surgery to clean it up, but never as bad as it currently is :(

Loven, strict calorie counting is the only thing that has ever worked for me.  Plus, increase the exercise.  Good luck and we are all pulling for you.  You can do it!

Chris, congrats on the loss!

I was down to a new low yesterday morning (146.6), but gained 2 pounds of water weight in 24 hours.

Bonnie, I hate crowds too!  That's why I do most of my shopping on-line.

BEB, I'm glad you enjoyed your day!  I hope you can meet some people to invite over when the weather doesn't allow outside activities.  As much as you like games, you could invite folks over to play a game of something -- do you play cards or board games?  I like cribbage and most board games, although I haven't played any in a long time.

Yes I hiked yesterday.   Only 7 miles or so, but much of it was up a very steep slope with no trail, following a creek drainage to the top of a mountain, with some boulder scrambling thrown in.  And then of course we had to come back down the same steep hill.  My knee was complaining on the downhill and not very happy when we got back to the cars, but another ibuprofen and ice helped quite a bit.  It is feeling okay today, just a bit stiff, but it is definitely happy to have a rest!  My appointment with the knee specialist is Dec 14. It is very noticeable that the muscles in my left quadricep are larger than the ones in my right.

Nancy, I hope your son gets squared away soon and can start contributing to the household.  I know what a worry that must be.

Margaret, do you have your eating back under control?   At least try smaller portions!  I have a working sheep dog calendar from Wales.  The Welsh word for November is Tachwedd.

Chris, geez, didn't DH ever hear of the 5 second rule?  Some people are just clean freaks -- I'm not one.   Your immune system is stronger if you don't pay too much attention to absolute cleanliness.  Heck, how dirty can the top of your foot be?  I hope you find some semi-gross habit DH has (all men have them) and give him a hard time about it.

BEB, I don't think anyone here is spreading germs in public.  The only thing mentioned was sneezing in one's own house.  No one here needs or wants a lecture about personal hygiene!

Shrimp have high cholesterol, not fish.  Anyway, the "experts" have changed their mind about eating cholesterol -- it's okay now.  Your body manufactures more of its own cholesterol than you will possibly get from food.  Eggs and shrimp are on the okay to eat list.  If CC is still givng shrimp and eggs a bad grade, they need to change their program to catch up with science.

I think if you stay away from processed foods and eat in moderation, you will be healthy. Shrimp, beef, pork - all okay in moderation as long as you also exercise and keep at a fairly healthy weight.  The latest I have been reading would indicate that the polyunsaturated oils are much less healthy for us than a moderate amount of saturated fat.  The food processing industry constantly has their hands in trying to convince us that what they want to sell us is healthy. If anyone is interested I'll find some links to info.

Hi girls!  I am still about the same weight but giving it a good try to see a new low soon.  I hiked on Sunday -- a short one for me ("only" 9.5 miles).  My knee wasn't perfect but it was better than on the last hike a few weeks ago.  My next step will be to go to an orthopedic sports doctor who was recommended to me.

Margie, sorry your hip nerve is still acting up.  I know it makes it a lot harder to exercise with the pain.  Sure hope they can find an answer.  But glad you are over the bronchitis!

Donna, I hope the restaurants around you have some good choices for you.  A lot of times, especially in the midwest, they don't cook in a healthy way, so everything is loaded with fat and calories.  That's why I avoid eating out.

Carol, hang in there and keep up the walking.  It is great to hear that you are moving!

I have gotten the same general advice to take it easy a couple of days before a race or long hike.  And I have done that for months and months.  No leg work on Thursday or Friday.  But now I realize that my legs were still fatigued on Saturday, almost every week.  I think the older we get, the more recovery time we need.  In fact for some of the hard hikes I do, I may need to recover all week and not do leg exercises at all!   Until my knee is back to normal I'll be taking it easy anyway - no squats or step ups.

BEB, I think I did not kick you hard enoughYell.  Donuts?  Yorkshire pudding?  Peach schnapps? You will never lose any weight eating that stuff!!  You need to plan out your calories like you used to, and STICK TO IT!!

I did a "short" hike yesterday (only 9.5 miles) along the upper Kern River.  The fall colors were lovely and the weather couldn't have been better.  I even felt good on the 2 steep uphill miles at the end of the hike.  I think taking it easy for 2 weeks was very good for me.  My legs felt very fresh and strong on the uphill -- I was faster uphill than two people who are usually always faster than me.  That must mean I have been doing too much during the week and my legs never fully recover.  My knee is a little irritated and swollen this morning, but nothing like it was two weeks ago, so I am encouraged by that.

Ohio, I don't know what told you that driving burns calories, but I'd rethink that if I were you!  Maybe if you are in the Indy 500 or something, but my GoWearFit says that I burn less calories driving than sleeping.  I usually burn .8 or 1 calorie per minute while driving.  That is NOT in addition to my base rate, that is TOTAL.  If you are trying to accurately track your calories in/out, lose those "driving" calories.  JMO.

Congratulations on your 13 pounds lost, Margaret!  I feel your disappointment about staying home.  I felt the same way when I skipped the hike last weekend.  But the good thing about mountains and the sea is that they will be there next weekend!

My son had a friend overnight for his birthday, and they ate giant cupcakes I bought at a cupcake shop across the street from the gym.  He got his new hockey skates as his present.  They were so expensive that I told him not to expect very much for Christmas.

I'd love to come see your area when I retire, BEB!  We can climb a mountain and enjoy nature.  I like kayaking and canoeing, but I'm not so keen on camping, boating and fishing, because they all involve a lot of sitting around.  The only sitting around I want to do is to type at the computer.

Welcome, Nancy.  I have knee issues too, although not to your extent.  For the past couple of weeks I have had to choose my exercises so as not to bend my knees.  I have been doing some moderate walking, though.  BEB is right, you can do effective exercises in a chair.  I think there may be a DVD about that - maybe google it.  Try to keep a positive attitude and do not avoid any exercise you can do -- that's my best advice.

Best to everyone!  Alice

Chris, that's a great tip about the tinsel.  I didn't know that!  So, you haven't told us your weigh-in results.

BEB, I thought your comment about the nude models in Bonnie's body sculpting class was a joke (and a funny one Laughing)   I didn't know you were serious.  That's too funny!

Helene, I have seen television programs about the great African migration.  Your description has made me want to see it in person.  Another item for my "retirement" list.  The most exotic thing I've seen lately is a dead badger on the side of the road.

I got some on my hands, Chris, and didn't feel anything.  I think they just don't like the whole procedure.  It is hard to get it on the skin and not just on the hair.  I take a lot of time to separate the hair and put a few drops here and there to try to get most of it onto the skin.  Plus, it is hard to get it up high enough where they can't lick it off.  Those cat necks are so flexible!   Our other 5 cats don't give us any problems.  Most of them purr while DH is holding them.  I put the same stuff on the dogs and they are fine with it also.

I forgot to say - my son is 16 today! It is hard to pick a good card for a 16 y.o. boy.  He seemed to like it though.  I got him a fairly serious one that said I think he is awesome!  His present is new ice hockey skates.  I was not thrilled that he asked for them because they are VERY expensive!  In fact I told him he would not be getting anything large or expensive for Xmas because these skates cost enough for several gift-giving occasions!  He seems to have a sense of entitlement which I don't appreciate, and I told him so. He claims his skates from last year are falling apart, but I think he wants these skates to impress his teammates.

I was late getting home last night, first because I stopped and bought him a card after work, and then because there was a big accident at the entrance to the freeway which took 20 minutes to get past.  That screwed up my whole evening and I had no energy for cooking or anything else.  I have great intentions while I'm sitting here at work, but many times those intentions vanish when I arrive home.

Sam, good to hear from you!  I'm glad your dog is okay, but I couldn't find the post that told what was wrong.  Can you fill me in?

For me it is much better to have nothing tempting in the cupboard, especially things that are small.  It is one thing to eat something large, like a whole bagel or a piece of pie.  It is much easier to justify eating just one little chocolate candy, or other bite-sized treat.  But then I always go back for another and another.  Right now all that is in my cupboard that could be considered a snack is sunflower seeds.  They are too small to bother with just one, and too difficult to eat a handful because you have to shell each one.

We put Frontline on four of the cats this morning.  Two more to go.  We did the most difficult one first (Pepper).  He hates it with a vengance.  I think it is because you put the Frontline in the same area you give a shot and he remembers those shots at the vet.  But we got it done without suffering a bite, although he was making awful noises and swinging his head around to try to nail any human part he could.

Ready for your kick, BEB?  Here it comes -- KICK!!!  You have no excuse to keep stocking your house with tempting stuff.  Just don't buy it, then you can't eat it!

Margaret, I am impressed with your determination to keep your activity level high!  So many women gain some weight, then use that as an excuse for total laziness.  It is a vicious cycle - lack of activity leads to more weight gain, which leads to less activity, etc.  I feel that a way we can love ourselves more is through exercise and general movement.

Tonight we are supposed to put Frontline on the cats to keep away the fleas.  I don't know if I have quite enough energy left for this, but I'll try.

Bonnie, that is a huge number of vaccinations!!  No wonder you were tired.

Margaret, I have never done boxercize, although I notice some women at the gym working out with a big punching bag.  I just came in from digging out some dirt under a gate so it would close properly.  Ten minutes of swinging a pickaxe, then twenty more of digging and throwing dirt with the shovel.   I felt it in my shoulders, arms, back and abs!

Trying my best to keep busy and not eat much today because a friend is treating me to dinner at a fancy restaurant tonight.  So far I have eaten 1/2 English muffin and a protein shake with banana and frozen strawberries.

Sorry to hear you have the flu, Margie Frown  Hopefully it will be gone soon and you can start getting in more exercise.  It is hard to stay away from sick people when they won't stay away from you.

Donna, how was the hike?  I hope you got to enjoy some nice fall weather before the real cold sets in.

My hike last week was great, but come Monday my knee was not so great.  Very swollen and stiff, and more painful than it has been.  I have decided it is not getting enough chance to recover during the week because of all I do, and it is having symptoms of over-use.  So I didn't go to my spin class, and I only did exercises this week which did not make me bend my knees, except for some easy walking.  I am even skipping the hike today Frown  I'll see how it feels next week.  I am not taking ibuprofen any more, just icing it as needed.  I bring my ice pack to work now and ice my knee at my desk.  It is definitely getting better with the rest, but it just kills me to be less active!  I'm going to do a ton of yardwork today and see how many calories I can burn.

I keep losing and gaining the same 3 pounds, and I know that's better than gaining, but I am determined to see a new low soon.

Margaret, if you don't get a little sore from working out, you are not building muscle!  I will get sore about 24 hours after I work out, but not every time.  Don't be afraid of a wee bit of discomfort - you can handle it!!

Two things that always make me a little sore are a big session of working on abdominals, and side lunges, where you step to the side and touch the ground, then stand back up.  This is especially effective with weights in your hand.

We have an overcast sky, breezy, around 60 F, but no rain in the forecast.  A good day for working in the yard.

Welcome, Cynthia!  I have those Leslie Sansone tapes too.  I haven't used them in a while but they are good for days when there is no time to get outside.  As for holidays, we have stopped doing the huge quantities of food for dinner.  Turkey is great and so are veggies.   we skip the cranberry sauce (boy is it loaded with calories) and the dessert.  I think you can find a lot of info on healthy recipes for the holidays.  Halloween is my biggest challenge with all the chocolate candy floating around the office.

Margaret, the coasteering sounds like so much fun!!  I would love to try it.  I wonder if they have anything like that here by the Pacific Ocean.  Do you have a link to the outfit that guided you?  I have done sea kayaking twice and enjoyed it immensely.  In fact, your mention of it made me think that I could substitute kayaking for hiking if my knee takes a while to heal.  It would be more expensive, that's for sure, but it is a wonderful soul-satisfying experience.

BEB, I have to admit to not watching TBL because I wanted to watch "So You Think You Can Dance".  The dancers are SO talented and the judges seem a bit higher class than the ones on American Idol.

Chris, you accomplished a lot in New Orleans.  I'm sure what you did greatly affected the lives of many people.  A big smile for you!!

BEB, yes I am not happy with the prospect of missing a few hikes.  Actually, though, I may not mind missing the one on Saturday because they want to meet at 4:45, which would mean leaving my house at 3:15, which would mean getting up at 2:15 Surprised  That is kind of early, even for me.

I know the knee will get better because it already feels a little better today.  But just the pressure of driving the car into work irritated the inside of my knee next to the kneecap.  I iced it at my desk.

Cardio is a problem - usually I do spin class, or the elliptical, or the treadmill.  I am going to try gentle walking on my break and see how the knee does.  Last night I was walking around doing my chores and it felt almost normal.

Margaret, thanks for the encouragement - I will exercise all I can.  I'm frustrated because I will be losing strength and stamina in my legs, as well as cardio fitness.  Right now I am at a very high level and able to hike 15-20 miles up and down steep mountains, which I do every Saturday.  If I miss even a few hikes it will make me less fit and I'll be struggling again.

Glamgram, what is a typical workout at the gym for you?  What do you do and how much weight do you use?

I am also a mushroom lover but I only care for a few when they are raw.  Roasted or sauteed - yum!  Or on a cheese pizza.

I was once told that my maiden name of Tooker is Welsh but it doesn't sound like it to me.  Don't you have to be an Evans, Owens or a Jones to be Welsh? Wink.  My other connection is that the mother of Spot, my youngest Border Collie,  was imported from Wales, so he is half Welsh and half Scottish.

Hi everyone - a very nice day here.  If only they could all be like this.

BEB, I eat a different way yet.  I keep my knife in my left hand and my fork in the right.  I cut with the knife in the left hand.  No one ever taught me that - I just thought it made more sense and started doing it that way when I was a kid. To answer your question about my family, I have a son who will be 16 in a couple of weeks.  I have 3 stepkids (two girls one boy) who are grown.  My stepson has a daughter and one of my stepdaughters has a boy and a girl.

Welcome, Margaret.  How nice that you can walk at the beach!  Congratulations on the weight you have already lost.

I don't get any trick-or-treaters because I live so far out in the country and down a long driveway.  It's probably a good thing because I will have no residual temptation in the form of leftover candy.  And I would buy chocolate if I were buying for trick-or-treaters Wink.

Laura, your costume sounds adorable!  Everyone who does a costume needs to post a picture.

rtfern,  we would love to have you as a regular.  Post again soon! Don't be embarrassed to go to the gym.  Lots of obese people go, and they are admired for their effort at all the gyms I've been to.  No one looks down on them.

I did leg presses yesterday as suggested by my new doctor.  My glutes are sore today.  My belly feels less jiggly.  My knee doesn't hurt today, either.  Well, just as I typed that, it started to twinge.  With my loose ligaments, I have to remember to NOT cross my legs or even my ankles (hard to remember).  I need to keep my right leg on the floor or up on something so that the knee doesn't have any external twisting force on it.

Apples sound so good - I'm getting a "fall baking" urge.

Carol, I am impressed that you are losing even though you can't exercise right now.  If we would all eat like that, we would all be losing!  "Food" for thought Smile  I get upset when my body slows me down and my eating usually gets worse.  Something I need to work on in my head.

Margie, sorry about your nerve problems.  I hope the pills kick in soon.  Just do what you can do.  If you can do any stretches or upper body exercises that don't cause pain, then do them!  Anything is better than nothing.

Donna, how was the tofu pudding?

My knee is still bothering me but I think it is slowly getting better.  I went to a new doctor on Tuesday, and he said the ligaments in my right knee are loose.  That allows the knee to "shift" when I'm not careful, and that causes the cartilage to rub a little and get irritated, which is the cause of the swelling.  His suggestion was to do what I'm doing - ice, ibuprofen as needed, and continue to try to build my quad muscles. He suggested leg presses instead of leg extensions, which he said are hard on the kneecap. He also wrote me a prescription for a special kind of knee brace, but I have to find out if my ins will cover it - it's expensive.

I love the new doctor!!  He's a D.O. rather than M.D.  He spent a lot of time talking to me and has exactly the philosophy I was looking for. What a wonderful office he has!  They did bloodwork right there and also a knee xray.  He read the xray with me only 10 minutes after it was taken.  Everything was digital.  Two days later the office called and gave me my blood work results - everything normal, cholesterol a tad high at 208 but I should be able to bring it down with healthier eating and lose a few pounds.  My old doctor's office NEVER called with results, even if something was wrong.

Hiking on Saturday as usual.  I have been very good with my eating this week and I'm back down to 148.2.  Maybe I can break 147 next week.

Bonnie, I am hoping so badly that your sister will continue to improve. She has been through so much - I can't even imagine.

I have noticed fewer people here.  I can't help but think that a lot of people who disappear have fallen off the wagon when it comes to weightloss.  Not Helene, though - I don't know what happened to her.

If I don't get a chance to post at work, I usually can't do it at home because I run out of time.  I don't have all that much to say that's new, anyway.  I did go to a new doctor yesterday and really liked him.  His office seemed very modern.  They immediately did an xray of my knees and within 5 minutes the doctor came in and looked at it with me.  It was all digital, too, and he was able to zoom in on little things.  Really cool!  Bottom line, my ligaments are loose in  my right knee, which allows the knee to shift which irritates the cartilage which causes the swelling.  It will resolve to some extent over time.  He gave me a scrip for an expensive custom knee brace.  I'll have to check to see if my insurance covers it.  He also suggested Synvisc injection to help the rough cartilage issue if it doesn't improve enough.  The joint space in both knees looks good.  It showed my leg muscles on the xray, and it is very clear that my right quad is less developed than my left.  He suggested leg presses with the foot turned out to target the inner quad muscle, rather than leg extensions.

Bonnie, didn't your DH try synvisc?  Was the injection very painful?

It was cold and very windy yesterday.  I was going to do a little yard work when I got home, but the wind kept me indoors.  I had to go out anyway to feed animals and replace bungees on some of my tarp structures (the wind snaps any old worn-out ones), but I only went out reluctantly with a scarf wrapped around my head.  I've been in California too long and have lost my tolerance for winter weather!

I have done well with my eating all week.  It has been hard, though and I'm hungry right now but shouldn't eat more until lunch.

Sigh, it is SO easy to gain and SO hard to lose.  And that's the way people get so heavy - one pound at a time.  Yes, we all have to do our best and make the right choices.

That is terrible about the day care center, Donna.  If Serisa reports them, I'm sure she will be kept anonymous.  The state is not allowed to say who complained.  My husband works in code enforcement.  People always try to find out who complained about them, but the inspectors are trained to never tell.  The state can just pull a surprise inspection.  I hope the teens are gone from there soon.

Hi Carol!  Glad you are back.  I always suspect when someone leaves that they are not losing weight, but I always hope it is not worse problems taking them away.  Try hot water with a lemon slice, almost like tea.

I haven't succumbed to Facebook although many people want me to get on there.  We only burn one calorie per minute (or less) while sitting at the computer and we need to remember that!  I burn more per minute sleeping than I do at the computer or while driving.

I am back to 150 because I have been eating in maintenance mode when I should be eating in a deficit mode.  Halloween candy is not helping!!!  I'm not buying any for home, though, so I will not have residual temptation.  This week, including Sunday, I have had a significant deficit so I should be seeing some lower numbers soon.

Margie, glad those 5 pounds are gone.  Is your blood pressure normal?  I know high blood pressure can give you headaches, and your blood pressure naturally goes up when you are exercising.  But as long as it is normal when you are resting, I think it is okay.

Donna, are you still exercising?  Are you losing yet?

Hi everyone!

Not such a great eating week so far, but I'm trying to do better today.  I haven't been all that bad, just not eating in deficit.  Halloween candy is everywhere.  Little stress-relief morsels -- at least that's how my body sees them.  I wish I could find real stress relief by going home and going to bed!

I've been trying hard to go to bed earlier and get more sleep, but things aren't going so well.  Last night DH was coughing and rolling around, then that darn cat Pepper was curled up near my head.  A few days ago Pepper chewed on my hair while I was sleeping and I have some shorter hairs near the back.  He has done that before.  Don't know the solution, cause I don't want to wear a hat or a helmet to bed. Undecided  I haven't even made a start on the guest room, so it might be back into the truck if things don't improve.  I have been tracking my sleep time according to my GoWearFit, and my average for last week was only a little over 5 hours per night.  Pretty dismal.

Laura, I can't say that I blame you or Bonnie or Ohio for not exercising in the morning.  I would have a problem with that too.

Kathy, glad you are enjoying your DVDs and getting sore muscles.  I always forget that I have some when I am home in the evening.  Gotta drag them out! I want to get a pilates DVD.

Bex, I'm not getting a flu shot.  I really believe that many people get sick from the shot.  Maybe not as sick as the full-blown flu, but sick nonetheless.

I don't know where BEB is either.  Hope she'll show up soon.

I must have gotten mixed up about who is who - is Nicole married to Brian or Rob?  What are all the relationships there?  Did Brian not know that Nicole was pregnant?  Otherwise, how could she hide the fact that she won't be having a baby?  I don't know how far along she was, but many many early pregnancies end in miscarriage for no particular reason.  Sometimes people find reasons to blame it on but it would have happened anyway.  Sometimes there is a genetic problem and it is nature's way of saying so.

I feel so sorry for Kyle, but didn't he have tendencies to act like Brian even before he moved there?  I thought that was a lot of why you were having so much trouble with him BEB.

BEB, here is Jillian's summary of TBL:

http://www.jillianmichaels.com/fitness-and-di et-tips/the-biggest-loser-season-8-episode-5

Chris, I hope the scale moves for you tomorrow - that scale can be SO frustrating when you are trying your best.

I ate maintenance level yesterday - I was trying for less but got too frazzled when I got home.  I was hungry but I had to do a bunch of outside chores before I could make my planned dinner (oriental chicken and veggies), so I kept eating snacks and THEN I ate my dinner too!

This morning our power went out at 6 am.  I was able to take a shower by Coleman lantern but I'm not very optimistic the power will be back on when I get home, because there are so many power problems with this storm.  Oh well, I've got the lantern and some books to read.  And I guess you don't need much light to exercise, right?
