Being in the army doesn't make you an automatic killer. Women especially usually don't even end up in combat. And just because I don't think like you doesn't mean i'm disgusting and hypocritical. I didn't come on here for a fight so back the hell off. And it's in no way hypocritical, you don't know me or what I stand for, quit acting like you do. And for the record the jobs I was going to go for has nothing to do with killing.

If you're involved with the US military you are involved in murder, whether you're pulling the trigger or not. You're right. I don't know you or what you stand for, but I do know that the military kills people and so do you.

You people are so brainwashed it's disgusting.

Those are pretty harsh words for people who readily put their OWN lives on the line for S*** pay, only to defend YOUR right to spit all over them.  Take it from someone who signed up to defend YOUR SORRY A** against all enemies. I didn't sign up to kill anyone, nor did any of my friends.  We don't do what we do to become killers - we implement the policies that are formed by OUR (yes yours too) leaders.  DO NOT take it out on the common soldier who goes out and gets their ass kicked each and every day so you can lay comfortably in your cozy bed each night.

You are so blind its disgusting.

Take it from someone who is former ARMY. If you have to ask the question, you don't belong in the Army. I'm not being cruel or harsh, but, being a vegan in the military is nearly impossible -- not to mention the leather bots.

There is such a thing as starvation mode. When you eat too little and do too much at the gym, your body will take everything it gets for calories and throw them into fat.. Then it essentially "lives" on your muscles.  You're reversing everything.  On the days you workout hard you MUST consume more calories.

Now THAT is a tough one.  It really depends on what you're into.  There really is something for everyone here, but it also depends on when you're here.  Try this website it has everything you need to know about Seattle nightlife from the locals...

I actually LIVE in Seattle. So here's what you gotta do (In order of importance):

1. Pike Place Market - 1/2 day unless you REALLY love to shop, make sure you see the original starbuck

2. Take a drive - some of the very best parts of Seattle are outside the city suggestions: San Juan Islands, Olympic Peninsula, Snoqualmie Forrest (Snoqualmie falls)

3. Have a romantic dinner at Salty's on Alki (make reservations at opentable.com) after a walk on Alki beach (about a ten minute drive from downtown)

4. If you like airplanes (or husband does) go to the Museum of Flight - but I'm partial about this one... :)

Also, the best shopping is around Pike and 4th Street. You probably won't be able to do much whale watching during that time, not the best season.

Whole foods has a terrific reference for food nutrition. The link below is for veggies but they also have one for seafood and fruit.  You can scroll down and see which ones have the highest contents of whatever vitamin or mineral you're lacking.

One of my fav's are artichokes.  YUM!

I'm always hungrier then.  I live in Seattle and work within walking distance of Pike Place Market - there's a bakery there that makes these outrageous cookies there and if I don't have one during the 't.o.m.' all hell will break loose!

So the short answer is: yes, you are not alone.

I can't believe we're having this discussion again.

well, believe it. because that is another problem that I've encountered. people who choose to live by restrictive lifestyles and expect everyone else to automatically know all about it but aren't willing to put in the educational legwork.

while it is true that some people just "don't get it", at least there are some people out there (like the OP) who ARE trying to educate themselves, and no one should EVER be berated or put down for trying to expand their knowledge base.

if you eat a restricted diet and you don't want to discuss it with anyone, then when you go somewhere as a guest you should advise the host ahead of time DO NOT cook for me, and then just bring your own. that's what most of my vegetarian friends do anyway.

I have no problem with people asking questions. Thats fine, I'm glad that there are inquiring minds out there.  But how many times has this EXACT same question been asked in this forum alone.

Vegetarian what to bring to a potluck? May 05 2008

This is a personal/family favorite!!!

Black Bean Corn Salad
1 can Progresso brand black beans
4 ears of yellow corn - yellow shows up the best in the salad
1 or 2 red peppers
green onions, small bunch
cilantro small bunch
1 tsp Dijon or other mustard
3 tbsp olive oil
1.5 tbsp balsamic vinegar
Cumin - try 1 tsp at first

(1 can Progresso brand black beans - you can use any, Progresso is just
the one I like the best.  Rinse good and drain in a collander, salt
and pepper the beans really good after they drain well.)

Cook the corn and cut off the cob, leaving a bunch of slices and
pieces, looks cool.

Chop the peppers into 1/4" pieces -  looks best.

Clean and cut the onions into 1/4" slices with some green tops included.

Chop cilantro in pieces.

Make the dressing, just taste it and add more Cumin after you put the
dressing on the salad.

Mix it all and add the dressing, add some more salt and pepper if it
need it. Best if made the day before.

udokier....not diggin' the sarcasm. Holistic care is everywhere and is a growing integral part of the medical community. You will be hearing more and more about it all the time!

How can it be integral when many of its claims and findings are not supported or accepted by mainstream medicine?

Just saying I would take a book by someone with a degree from Johns Hopkins a bit more seriously than someone with a degree in holistic nutrition.

Not to beat a dead horse.... BUT....  I would not trust "mainstream Medicine" any more than I trust holistic medicine. Especially given what most doctors actually know about nutrition.

And even though someone might be "educated" by the right people, or just because its certified by the FDA does not mean that its set in stone. That is why they say that doctors PRACTICE medicine.

OH and a little addition... I gave that book to my diabetic coworker (who used to have an abysmal diet) not only did she loose 8 pounds in the first two weeks, she is no longer diabetic.  There's hope!

Carie87, keep up the healthy lifestyle. Your body is going through an adjustment, it may take time.  I would recommend (depending on your size and height) that you eat a bit more.  If you eat too little and make a big diet change than your body will over react.  Just give it some time.

And one more thing: I became veggie about 1.5 years ago. I am exactly the same weight, but have lost my "chub" so I'm leaner and exponentially healthier.

One of the women that wrote the book actually has a Masters of Science degree in holistic nutrition.

The word "holisitic" casts some doubt on the value of the degree, IMO. What University gives out MS degrees in "Holostic Nutrition"? The Learning Annex?

I agree with carie87.

udokier: do YOU have a Masters? Have YOU published a widely- read book? Just curious.

Being a vegan myself, I found i felt better, my skin got better, and i lost A LOT of weight with out even trying. The down sides are the obvious need to look after your calcium and protein ect. sometimes you may find yourself eating too many carbs, but at least you're getting all of your recommended fruits and veggies! stores like whole-foods make it so easy to be vegan, and i have never found it too difficult (except when people are eating ice cream cake at parties. . . mmm).

BUT WAIT HERES THE BEST PART!

being a vegan minimizes your chances for colon cancer to almost NOTHING. (part of the reason I started, because my family has a history of colon cancer), and all and all, it feels so revitalizing!

GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks for pointing the colon cancer part out. I never knew that!  My grandmother died from colon cancer when she was 30.  Another great reason to be a veggie!

Vegetarian Good Backpacking Vegetarian meal idea? Apr 04 2008
20:35 (UTC)

I'm a big backpacker myself and I always struggle with **NUTRITIOUS** veggie backpacking meals.  I like to take bread peanut butter and honey along. Its a great after hike meal thats easy.

For breakfast: before you leave, combine 1/2 cup quick-cook oatmeal and combine with some flax and dried blueberries in a ziplock bag.  Its so easy to just dump in your pan and cook in the morning.

For dinner: I have also made this recipie and froze it in a plastic ziplock bowl. Take with you and by the time you get to your campsite it should be defrosted enough to warm on the stove...  http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipes/soup- stew/chili_tofu.html

Have a great hike!

2: I had no intention on becoming a vegan until I read the book.  Now I cant even look at any type of milk/cheese/yogurt before I start thinking about all the puss and crap that comes out of the cows udder when its sucked dry.  Not to mention the antibiotics and the hormones put in to combat the puss!  Disgusting!

A lot of Indian food is vegan, but beware the goat's cheese sometimes added. Whoever said Thai - good call. I really want to get the new Skinny Bitches cookbook - anyone read it yet?

With Indian food, you have to watch out. Just like any other country, it depends on what region its from.  I was in India last winter and some of the ladies there were trying to show me how to cook Indian food. They used ridiculous amounts of butter and milk in many of their recipes.  So much of it is vegetarian but not vegan.

Cheers!

I know its frustrating and seems more expensive.  But I like to think of it as an investment. You're investing in the health of your body.  You wouldn't buy a Porche and put regular unleaded in it - would you?  Well, you only get one body and one chance at life.  If you feed your body good foods now, then you will be way less likely to have health problems down the road.  I just went and had some blood work done and my doctor couldn't believe how perfect my health is.  Give your body some time to adjust - trust me - it will get much easier over time. Stick with it, because its worth it!

Vegetarian Worse hangovers since starting eating vegan...happen to you too??? Mar 24 2008
19:53 (UTC)

I concur with the supplement comment.  Hangovers are simply a lack of two things: water and vitamins/minerals.  When we drink alcohol our bodies need more water to offset the process that our kidneys and livers go through to get rid of the toxins.  So your body pulls water from everywhere it can after you drink lots which is why you get a raging headache.  So I generally end my evening of fun with a big glass of water and a multi vitamin and I'm always hangover free!  And if by the morning I'm still feeling a little less than 100% - I believe that propel fitness water is a hangover cure!

Cheers!

My dad used to love to get ice cream when I was a kid.  Once we went to cold stone after a move to get a scoop.  We both started enjoying our ice cream and about half way through he took mine away (mid lick) and threw it away.  His explanation was that "I didn't need it all".  But he kept eating his delightfully.

Seriously!? I was only like 5'6" and 160 lbs.   Now I'm at about 5'7" and 147lbs.

He also hid the sour creme from me when when the rest of the family got to eat it.

I always joked that he's lucky I'm not anorexic.

Vegetarian Tomato soup Jan 23 2008

My mama used to make this for me all the time and I LOVE IT. Its so easy to make too.

  • 3-6 Large Tomatoes (depending on how much you want to make)
  • 1/5 to 1 Large Onion
  • a handful of mushrooms (I prefer crimini)
  • some basil (however much or little you like)
  • A little butter or olive oil if you are Vegan.

There are two ways to do this. One involves chopping by hand and I do the other using a food processor. Here's how it goes:

Step 1: Chop the tomatoes into quarters, place in large pot and pour enough water so that the tomatoes are half covered. Simmer until soft. You dont want to use too much water or else the soup will be really runny whereas I like mine thicker.

Step 2: Chop onions and mushrooms and fry in butter/oil until soft - about 5 to 10 minutes.

Step 3: if you have a food processor or blender, combine all ingredients in blender (including the basil) and blend for a few seconds. For a little added flavor I like to put some more butter and a smidgen (about one tablespoon) of milk or creme in and some salt and pepper.

Step 3: if you dont have a food processor then just combine all the ingredients in the pot and simmer for just a little while longer. I would also make sure to chop your onions, mushrooms, and basil smaller at the beginning so they are more bite-sized on a spoon.

And thats that! I like to put mine in canning jars right after I make it so I can pack it in my work lunches during the week. Yum! Thanks mom!

Oh, and by the way, the whole process usually only takes me about 30 minutes. :)

Vegetarian Fish Eating "Vegetarians" Jan 14 2008

I'm with glindalupo.  It is so much easier to tell people that I am a vegetarian so that they don't look at my weird when I abstain from the main course at meals.

I became a pescetarian because I have chronic gall stones.  My body just does not like meat.  So instead of having my gall bladder removed, I thought it healthier and more natural to just change my diet.  I do not miss meat at all.  However, sometimes I need the supply of lean protein from fish.  Still, I only eat fish maybe twice per month.  I try to listen to my body and only eat it when I'm really craving it.

Still, as far as global awareness is concerned, we are picking our oceans dry of seafood and we still waste a lot of what we fish.  So I try to take that into account as well.
